Can we trust Spurs’ FPL defenders with appealing fixtures this season?

Fantasy Premier League managers are considering Spurs defenders ahead of the new season… but can they be trusted? That’s what I am here to find out.

When the 2020/21 fixtures were released there was a sudden spike in managers interested in the Spurs backline. These sorts of options have not been particularly popular in recent seasons, but some of them may well have come into the new campaign at just the right prices.

With a similar group of players to Jose Mourinho’s squad, Spurs kept 13 clean sheets in 2018/19, conceding 38 goals, the fifth-best in the league.

Before that, they finished fourth overall for clean sheets and letting in just 36 goals in 2017/18.

And few managers will forget the 2016/17 campaign when Spurs ended up joint-top for clean sheets with Manchester United (17) as they let in only 26 goals across the season.

If they can rediscover this sort of form with their appealing fixtures at the start of 2020/21, we could find some exciting value options in defence.

But the question is… can they deliver on that kind schedule? To find out, I looked at some of the underlying numbers from last season.

Surely Wolves won’t sell Doherty for £12m way too cheap considering Chilwell went for £60m

Doherty is a better full back and is a lot less injury prone. Being older doesn’t warrant being 5x cheaper.

Wildcarding GW2 and have not decided if I'm gonna play BB GW1 or not.
But this is what my non-bb team looks like at the moment.

    McCarthy
    TAA Davies AMN(if Wolves)
    Salah Son Ziyech Keita
    Kane Werner Antonio

Playing the BB in GW1 is no different to playing the BB at the restart after 3 months off due to covid & most people who played it smashed that week.

Not doing it myself but how is it different? People had no issues doing it then with unlimited transfers and no certainty of line ups, it was also a SGW.

Absolutely correct. The only difference now is all BB GW1 teams I have seen don't have a good enough bench I think to justify the BB this time around.

People loaded benches with AVL/SHU/Saka who all had DGWs and were cheap enablers for it.

Thats not how I remember it, I remember loads of people creating a team just for the restart & then wildcarding a fresh team for the run it, I remember it well because I had no wildcard and felt screwed.

Either way, same principle, most (including me) had their best weeks of the season after a 3 month break with no form or patterns to pick a team on.

Key differences between GW30 last season and GW1 this season

              1) GW30 was a DGW
              2) There were no ‘real life’ club transfers made between GW30 and the previous GW
              3) People wildcarding out of it only had to plan for 8GWs, not 15

So they should have chased 33 points difference with same young inexperienced squad they had last year? Of course they attack the title this year with as much signings as they can, only small clubs like Arsenal, Tottenham and Manu are satisfied with top 4 (or europa league places in case of ARS and TOT)

Messi to City would also make all their other assets (that play) way more appealing with the additional assist potential

Right side will be with KDB + Messi so a lot of space for Sterling run-ins

I wouldn't have a wide mid from a Mourinho side; he gives them too much defensive responsibility.

I'm a big fan of Moura, so it's not him, just Mourinho. I'd squeeze out another 0.5m for Greenwood and bench, or try JWP seeing as you don't have Ings.

Anyone think Liverpool have lost a certain something since becoming champions?

It's probably acknowledged in sports psychology that the hunger to win contributes X percentage of effort / motivation, and after winning the Champions League and Premier League, there is bound to be a small drop off.

That front 3 were on it, every game, for the past couple of seasons. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a drop off without a few new faces at Anfield.

    1. Nightcrawler
      • 4 Years

They need a new top quality player in the front 3 just to freshen it up. Fergie was the master ot this. Remember them signing berbatov when they already had tevez rooney ronaldo etc after winning the double in 08

There's a reason so few teams are PL champions three times a row and that's that it takes enormous effort to sustain form for that long.

That's effectively what Liverpool will be trying to do this season as they were effectively operating at that level in the 18/19 season too. They were just trumped by a frankly outstanding run from City, that left that Pool side as almost certainly the best team not to win the league in a given season.

With that in mind, as well as the emotional toll of the first title in so long under these bizarre circumstances, I would also expect a drop off this season. It would be remarkable if there wasn't one.

      1. Twisted Saltergater
        • 14 Years

yep, this. Sums up my thoughts perfectly. People forget that 18/19 season, where their points total was enough to win the league in any other season.

Mind you they did win the league very comfortably this year, so even with a drop off in form they would still likely be strong contenders. I just think that at minimum it will be a much tighter field this year.

It pains me to say it - but I don’t think it would be in the natures of some of the core senior personalities in that group (The likes of Klopp, Henderson, Van Dijk, Wijnaldum, Allison, Firmino, Mané etc) to sit back on their laurels & I’m sure the right tone & standards are being set

Salah will probably still obsessively compulsively chase goalscoring records, and TAA/Robbo don’t really strike me as the good time Charlie types either (albeit Robbo must almost certainly have been over the legal alcohol limit for the city match)

Gomez probably similar - young players who surely have a desire for more medals

I could still see them losing out though - City with Laporte fit are a different beast - and if they add a Koulibaly type alongside him I think they’d take the league back - but Pool probably still good for minimum 85-90+ points again which isn’t easily done

A major Injury would be their biggest risk rather than complacency I think - particularly to VVD

They couldn’t cope with his abscence in the same way as City tried to cope without Laporte

This is where Klopp has to step up further, Fergie used to do it all the time, make tweaks to the team when they are on top to keep them moving.

Keita needs to get a run now instead of Wijnaldum, Brewster (if he stays) needs to compete with Firmino, minor tweaks but enough to keep things fresh otherwise like you say, they could get a little stale.

One player who have I haven't heard mentioned much is Bernardo Silva. It's clear Pep doesn't quite trust Foden in the CAM role yet, so either Pep will tweak his midfield slightly to have two number 6's - such as Rodri and Gundogan - or he'll allow Bilva to replace Dilva.

Same price as Greenwood, he's a cert for me in GW3 if tactically, Pep keeps the 4123.

Much less. I fundamentally don't believe a fullback in a Mourinho side will ever be given the attacking license that Doc has at Wolves. It isn't just about him being attacking, it's about *how* he is allowed to attack.

And the defensive cover; doc can get in the box with wolves because he has two lines covering him back wide; won’t be that way with spurs; the CBs are going to have loads of space to cover and his speed tracking back is going to be an issue for counters. Not even interested if he gets the move. Not sure how spurs expect him to fit into a side that requires so much of their fbs defensively

Aurier wasn’t popping up in the box much at all, he was as swinging crosses in from deeper wide positions, which is clearly not doc’s game. He is the perfect player for the system at wolves

Initially I thought much less, but given spurs fixtures and the licence they gave Aurier... I'm tempted to say those who doubled on vinagre and Doherty could just leave him in. Might work... If not downgrade to whoever seems good in gw8ish.
