Can we trust Spurs’ FPL defenders with appealing fixtures this season?

Fantasy Premier League managers are considering Spurs defenders ahead of the new season… but can they be trusted? That’s what I am here to find out.

When the 2020/21 fixtures were released there was a sudden spike in managers interested in the Spurs backline. These sorts of options have not been particularly popular in recent seasons, but some of them may well have come into the new campaign at just the right prices.

With a similar group of players to Jose Mourinho’s squad, Spurs kept 13 clean sheets in 2018/19, conceding 38 goals, the fifth-best in the league.

Before that, they finished fourth overall for clean sheets and letting in just 36 goals in 2017/18.

And few managers will forget the 2016/17 campaign when Spurs ended up joint-top for clean sheets with Manchester United (17) as they let in only 26 goals across the season.

If they can rediscover this sort of form with their appealing fixtures at the start of 2020/21, we could find some exciting value options in defence.

But the question is… can they deliver on that kind schedule? To find out, I looked at some of the underlying numbers from last season.

Very happy with my team now:

    McCarthy
    TAA,Dier,Saiss,KWP
    Salah,Auba,ASM,Armstrong
    Werner,Mitrovic

    Fabri, Ferguson, Davis, Fernandes

Fernandes can slot in after gw1 blank

Could also do Dier to a 4.5 and then upgrade Ferguson to a 4.5

Probably due to Bruno on the bench. GW2 midfield will be Salah Auba Bruno ASM/Armstrong

Makes sense. I'm of the mind to not bench any premium initially and sell Auba/Mane/whoever after 1 or 2 for Bruno / City mid

yeah that’s my thinking. Palace game is perfect for Bruno, and he’s very well priced this season. Current template means most players won’t be able to get in Bruno for the second gw unless they get a hit or use wc

He's 33 but he played more than 75 minutes per game last year and had 30+ goals and 25+ assists. Don't think he'll be rotated nearly as much as we've seen Sterling or Mahrez been in the past

No 'of course' about it. If FPL Towers are smart, they'll price him just out of reach of good FPL players, leaving the knee-jerkers to buy him and destroy their team balance.

What price would be the "sweet spot" where he's borderline in that case?

            • 11 Years

            In my opinion, possibly 15m.
If he's priced, as some suggest, around 13m, every man and his dog will own and captain him, for an EO of 200%. It would spoil the game. At 16m the knee-jerkers and casuals will have him along with a squad of 4.5s. But at 15m maybe 25% of the better players will try to build a half-decent squad around him, with the majority taking a calculated risk in avoiding him.

What % at 14m which would equal the max a player has been in FPL?
Wouldn't that be a better price? Maybe add 0.5 to be annoying?
Also, he would miss GW1 so it's at less 1 transfer in most cases as few would probably bench in GW1.

                3 years, 7 months ago

He shouldn't be equal to the previous max as he's better than any previous players. 14.5 - yeah, that could be the spot.

Fair enough, could argue his best has happened.
Scary to think his 2.5m better than anyone but if on penalties, he could be another Bruno.

He will be on penalties and the left footed free kicks and corners. It would not be surprising if he's the top goalscorer AND top assister in the league.

Really not a big fan of some of the purported transfers making the rounds. Doherty to Spurs would ruin a good thing I think, not to mention take Aurier out of the equation who has the potential to be a fantastic FPL asset this season. Messi to Manchester City would destroy the game, and I hate Manchester City anyway so really don't want that to happen.

Just woke up, late to the party as usual. This article on Spurs' defence raving about Aurier - (a) Spuds are looking to get rid, and (b) Doherty appears to be on the way.

Doherty is a tad too expensive for me, but possibly is a boost to Kane. It should put Davies up to the top of the agenda.

    C) Bruno
    D) Martial

For me, Rashford lost his edge a little bit towards the end of the season, so I'd put him currently 4th. If you're talking rank in terms of final points total, Bruno is your man, but if you are thinking in terms of value for money, it's Greenwood first for me, then Bruno, Martial and Rashford.

    Genuine question.

    Salah/Armstrong vs Fernandez/Ings ?

Auba, KDB, Bruno, Werner, Son all have fixtures to captain them.

        Sorry, I meant Son/Ings vs Armstrong/ Salah

        So it is :

        ASM Auba Bruno Son
        Ings Mitrovic Werner

        Vs

        ASM Auba Bruno Salah Armstrong
        Mitrovic Werner

So I feel that Son/ Ings will outscore Salah/Armstrong
Auba will become KDB week 3.

The question is the lack of Salah captain option.
But looking at the fixtures I think there are plenty of outside outside Salah.

Given this I was questioning why have Salah ? Is it crazy ?

Rodrigo to Leeds! What price though?

£6m or under straight in my team.
£6.5m maybe but will probably try it, Leeds create an awful lot of chances the only drawback being Bamford on those.
    £7m + wait and see

From what I've read, he's another non-scoring striker to complement Bamford. I'd expect he'll come in at 6.0, not more than Mitrovic who has far better form.

Going to stick to the 451 this year and see how it goes. Obviously not what I will start with and a complete fodder bench won’t work but any thoughts on something like this.

    Ryan

    TAA VVD Doherty Laporte

    Salah Sterling Greenwood Foden ASM

    Werner

    Fodder bench

Downside for me would be 2x 4.5 forwards on bench. Neither will play and if Werner is rotated, you have a big gap. Plus neither could be Brewster (if loaned out), as you have 3 Liverpool already. I'd prefer to downgrade VVD and Laporte (he could be rotated) and get a second playing forward.

Cheers. I am not total against a 352. Of those 2 Laporte would the one to go, but for 6.0 you are getting a player who got about 180 in his only full season. Screams value to me.
I am probably prepared to run the risk of 10 players starting, this is one thing that makes Jiménez a better option in this formation but then I would want Pulisic.

The decision of go for Ryan or McCarthy?
Ryan looks the option to set and forget based on history of the last 2-3 seasons. McCarthy definitely has better fixtures to start but I think I will go Ryan and the set and forget option.
Any good reason to change to McCarthy. Will White start for Brighton and if so does he make them better?

Both are not reliable options tbh, they are unlikely to keep many CSs because of the way they play. Investing extra 0.5 in that position will likely result in much more points.

If going for one of them, McCarthy will probably be better as I feel Ryan save points went down last year.

I’d say that .5 is better ITB if you can’t spend it than Ryan->Dubravka (the only 5.0 that I find tempting)

Personal preference I guess, I would even pay 1.5 extra to avoid consistent supply of 1-2pts which is what Ryan/McCarthy are capable of.

For me that position is more of a rank changer than getting Werner over Martial or Antonio over Mitrovic or Rashford over Son with that 0.5

I was a Ryan owner for almost 25 or so GWs and it was almost same as playing with 10 men.

I’d just argue that none of CPL, NEW, BRI or SOU should be considered defensive rocks so why spend .5 more for maybe 8pts gain (the difference last year between Ryan and Dubravka).

Of course maybe this year will be different but right now I’m looking for whatever .5 I can find to help afford the better attacking players I want to bring in early in the season.

If you think only 8-10pts gain will be made, then it's fine to not spend extra 0.5

In my opinion, Palace and Newcastle are still pretty good home teams. Correct me if I'm wrong but Newcastle was 4-5th in terms of CS kept at home, Palace was also close. Over a period of 10-12 GWs, I expect them to outscore likes of Ryan by at least 20-30pts.

Even if we ignore Palace/Newcastle for a moment, I'm surprised not many are looking at Ramsdale for "long term" as they say. I guess budget is pretty tight...

Ramsdale is intriguing but I think most, including me, feel that Henderson was the glue of that defense.

I do think Dubravka *could* hit around 160pts, but at this point, I don’t see NEW making major gains from last season.

I do think budget IS the prevailing factor in all this tho.

All those points was scored in first 8 GWs, after that he kept something like 1 CS over next 15 and probably scored more than 2pts in 2-3 games at best.

      McCarthy better pick for me

Southampton finished last season way better than they started it defensively - not simply a post restart phenomenon. They are considerably better than Brighton all round. One will be likely top ten material and the other a relegation dodger.

Interesting to see what happens to White. Very much doubt Potter will be reliable with him and also dubious that he would perform in the sane way when playing in a Potter and Bielsa side.

The more I think about Doherty to Spurs the less likely I am to get him. Decent player but the Wolves' tactics make him look better than he is. Not a great crosser but his excellence is in off the ball movement however how effective will that be in a back 4? In a way it could be useful for Wolves - low fee aside - as his effectiveness was clearly diminished when Traore played at RW. Even with the Spurs asymmetric system his numbers will surely decrease and it's unlikely he'll be worth it for 6.

I still want at least 3 players from both teams defenses, Dier/Doherty/AMN/Wolves RWB/Vinagre all under consideration. Both defenses will be elite this year.

    1. Andy_Social
      • 11 Years

I'm thinking of the implications of Doherty at Spurs. He'll be less attacking, making 6m for a Mou defender too much. However, Aurier's problem is he can't defend, so Spurs ought to be stronger defensively. This makes me interested in Davies at 5m. With Wolves' defence weakened and Spurs' strengthened, he comes into play for me. Dier is same price, so is the equation is Dier - nailed, baps v Davies potential occasional assists.

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years
        3 years, 7 months ago

Actually, thinking it through further, I don't think Mou would buy Doh for his attacking qualities and stop him using them. More likely is a lop-sided set-up where Doh is encouraged to play high with a DM dropping into his space, while on the left flank Son dominates that side with Davies staying further back.

        1. Flair
          • 3 Years

Yes, that tactical system looks spot on. Hojbjerg as the right sided DM in a 4-2-3-1 to cover Doherty's advances forward sounds like the strategy that will be employed.

Aurier was pretty advance, wasn't he? 6m for a Spurs defender could be too much but I guess his attacking returns won't drop much, may even improve.

Wonder how this will impact Traore's gametime, would be nice if he gets nailed again.

Thinking very much the same - but cautious about Doh value now on week 1 budget. 5.5 yes 6.0 probably not

Traore was in my little list anyway and this could make him more interesting. Also Doherty consistently crushed Jonny and he was more than just the creation of the Wolves system.

Wow, nice stuff. Dier RCB, Winks left DM, Hojbjerg right DM, Ndombele/Alli interchangeable. Makes more sense now why Mourinho is going for him, this system essentially becomes the 3-4-3 in attack, a lot like Wolves. Food for thought...

            • 11 Years
            3 years, 7 months ago

It is. I think rather than starting with a Spuds defender, I'll watch GW1 carefully. Doh could be a great asset. If they go Back 4 it could be Davies; a
Back 3 would make Davies rotatable and no improvement on Dier who would be more nailed so long as he doesn't screw up.

Spurs will play a back 4 of Davies-Dier-Alderweireld-Doherty in a 4-2-3-1 when defending, both Davies and Dier are nailed. This is a diagram of how the system will look in attack, a 3-4-3 with the left back tucking in and the right back moving forward.

I think this needs a cheap striker spot and a 2nd premium mid spot with immediate effect. Keep it simple for now, no need to take too many risks from the get-go.
