How I’ll try to keep pace with the new smart thinkers in FPL this season

When I returned to Fantasy Football in 2006, a statistics fetish and the quest for one-upmanship over my rival Granville inspired this website and underpinned some high ranks in Fantasy Premier League. I got myself a flying start, an early advantage.

Almost fifteen years later, the pitch has been levelled.

I have to admit, when Fantasy Football Scout became my universe, I buried my head and shut out the social media powered community that grew up around me. I built walls and obsessed about protecting what I had, forgoing likes and subscribers to keep my roof intact.

Now free of those concerns, I was shocked when I reared my head to look around. Both the depth and breadth of the FPL community is extraordinary, the amount of information and data being shared openly overwhelming.

Eight million managers make a high rank that more difficult to achieve, but the explosion of new voices spraying knowledge and opinion far and wide raises the bar with each passing season.

Metrics

Back in the day, I was among a few hundred who wandered trance-like down supermarket isles deliberating a four-point hit. Now there are thousands extending loo breaks to unfeasible lengths of time while they compare Sadio Mané (£12.0m) and Mohamed Salah (£12.0m) for touches in the box. Like myself all those years ago, they have spreadsheets, irritated partners and an insatiable drive to succeed: a triple threat.

I need to raise and change my game if I’m to remain in their company.

Too long in the tooth and arrogant to be told the latest do’s and don’ts or ten tips for success, I know the mechanics of the game and how to bend them to my advantage. To really improve, I need to look hard at myself, analyse my methods and learn from mistakes.

I’ve always hurried away from FPL failure. I’m almost ashamed that dismal Gameweeks spark family tension in garden centres, so why would I ever dwell on every error? I bury mistakes to maintain an equilibrium. Forget that bad transfer, move on, greet the next deadline as a liquor to quickly drown my sorrows.

That changes now. I should see my mistakes as an opportunity to learn more about how I play, to identify my favourite error traps and the bias at play when I run my eye over Match of the Day highlights or Goals Imminent tables.

Thanks to an almost catastrophic campaign in 2019/20, I have plenty to pick apart. I’ve learned to enjoy looking back and attempting to fathom my thought process behind each bad decision. But that’s just a post mortem; I need to attack this new season with this same analytical mindset.

I have to be more inquisitive as each Gameweek rolls by, question and challenge each decision I make and develop methods that reveal a clear choice that I’m happy to take, not just one I’ve convinced myself is correct by brute-forcing fuzzy numbers and rose-tinted eye tests.

You might have noticed that psychology is a popular buzzword right now, an emerging theme in the community that can be conveniently tucked away in a bulging box file labelled “overthinking”.

But I’m convinced that something is afoot. When Magnus Carlsen, the world’s finest Chess player, hits the FPL top 100, we need to stop in our tracks and consider that there could be a new breed among us.

I reckon your average Grandmaster spends more time pondering King to G7, rather than King to centre forward. So I might have the edge on Magnus when it comes to thinking time, I may even have more knowledge and data at my disposal.

But does Magnus employ a logical method to his decisions and keep bias and emotion in check? Does he indulge in bouts of introspection and analysis of his judgement calls? Does he read all those psychology threads on Twitter with a knowing smile?

He’s the best chess player in the world. He does all the above and has a team of advisors doing it for him while he sleeps.

These days everyone can get a glut of knowledge, information and data in their timeline with relative ease. But to work out how best to process it, how you learn to separate luck from skill and focus on improving the input, not dwell on the output, that might just be the new marginal gain. A fresh route to success.

After last season, I’ll give anything a go.

Magnus must be petrified.

Best players by position:

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Anyone getting TAA and Robertson right from the start? It seems that there are only four tricky fixtures for Liverpool during the first 16 gameweeks....

I've chosen to go without any L'pool defenders. In fact I don't own a defender priced higher than 5.5. It's a risk, but nothing ventured, nothing gained.

      Yeah.

I see both of them scoring way more than any other £7-7.5m player in the game, in any position - and more than most £9m+ players too. I think I'd rather take a punt on a 5.0m midfielder and have Robbo than £7m player like Mount and a "Burnley" defender.

Mitrovic in many teams...Robertson might get 60+ more points than him during the season?

this is my thinking too, i'm very keen on pool double defence, maybe even triple at some point, but just want to see how things go in the first few weeks and have some flexibility to switch around my attack, easy enough, to downgrade an attacker and bring in Robbo once we see where the value picks are

I've been strongly intrigued by his strength and vision on Fifa last year, so I went to YouTube in search for some more info and I've found the prospect of an absolute phenomenon. My only concern is the role: he's perfect for playing as a Central Attacking Midfielder (i.e. behind a lone striker in a 4-3-1-2) so I hope Palace will play him that way. Should he settle rapidly, point will flow, I hope and think.

    McCarthy
    TAA | VVD | 4.5
    Salah | Auba | ASM | Soucek | Son
    Kane | Antonio

    4.0 | Johnson | Mitchell | Wickham

Then WC for GW2 to get rid of WHU players, buy Manchester guys etc. Thoughts?

Think you need Ferguson in there too for the requisite palace triple up 🙂

Joking apart if you're benching 4.0 as second bench you may as well go Ferguson as Mitchell is likely good for weeks 1-2 whereas Ferguson may come good around when Palace hit top of ticket from 5/6 on

I'd save 0.5 off Vvd in practice to go Doherty. Double WH would bother me

Has anyone seen any analysis or commentary on Captaincy rotations. I've seen plenty of chat on defensive rotations, but very little on captaincy.

For example, a Liverpool and Man City rotation (Salah/KDB) only has 11 out of 16 games at home which includes them playing each other. This makes me feel as though Man City / Man Utd rotation makes more sense, albeit that there's question marks over whether Fernandes is as reliable as Salah.

Otherwise, I'm also considering KDB (home) and Sterling (away) rotation...

Rotating captains at home has worked well for me in the past, Bruno/ city asset doesn't look amazing with the fixtures on paper though. I'm planning for first 3/4 weeks then will see where I'm at then.
      Wk 1 Salah/Auba
      Wk 2 Auba
      Wk 3 Bruno/KDB
      Wk 4 Salah

Not yet - but Palace are top of ticker not too far in and there's an interesting attack with 4 good mid budget options.

Good chance Fraser will be on board early next week. Then there's the possibility that Palace will finally buy a striker. If not buying then Bats on loan must be possible to give this front 4 before Zaha head off - the continent is my best guess.

Thoughts on Alli as a punt? Seems to be doing ok preseason and Spurs have nice fixtures to begin with. Don't want to double Chelsea right away so not interested in Ziyech.

    Hello,

How does this look?. Not completely sold on Tierney.

    McCarthy
    Taa-Dier-Vinagre-Tierney
    Salah-Auba-JWP-Soucek
    Kane-Werner

    4m-ASM-Mitchell-Davis

On that set up I'd be tempted by AWB benched week 1 ahead of Tierney.

I'm finally happy with my team, what do you think of it? (0.0 ITB)

    McCarthy - Nyland
    TAA - Doherty - Egan - KWP - Vinagre
    Salah - Auba - Son - Ziyech - ASM
    Ings - Brewster - Davis

    Thanks in advance.

Think I've found the perfect set up, have 1.5 ITB and Taylor on the bench for Burnley's excellent fixtures?

    TAA Doherty Egan Vinagre
    Salah Auba Son Soucek
    Werner Mitrovic
    Steer Brewster Anguissa Taylor

    A) Bench Greenwood and play Justin.
    B) Punt on some 7-7.5 mid and then worry about ManU and ManC later.

Doesn't make a difference but interesting nontheless. To me it means Newcastle are more likely to bring back the 5-4-1, in which case any ASM owners should be tripping over themselves to kick him out

Whats your thoughts on TAA and Robertson in the same team? Means theyre both set and leave, even though early fixtures arent great, they could always pop up with an assist
Im currently running TAA with Davies and Doherty, but thinking TAA with Robertson and dropping Davies down to a 4.5 seems alot better?

    Basically, A- TAA Roberton and a 4.5
    or
B - TAA, Doherty and Davies?

Appreciate your help, as im stuck

I like the double up but not from the start. Cheap defender can match robbo and trent over first 3 or 4 weeks as they have to play chelsea and arsenal. After that I am looking at the double up for sure, then rotate 2 cheap lads

Can't go wrong with that approach. Their is always WC to solve the problem if it's not working.

Has it been confirmed that Amazon Prime will be showing the December 28th fixtures rather than the Boxing Day matches this year ?

The link below suggests that they were will broadcasting the mid-December midweek set of fixtures (that includes West Ham v Palace) and the 28th of December which includes Southampton v West Ham

In defence, I can see benefits of each of these but which would you choose and why?

    1. Double Liv defence (TAA + Robbo) and laugh as the points roll in.
    2. Play it cool. TAA and a bunch of 4.5m + a 4.0m for good measure.
    3. All 4.5m's (possibly even one 4.0m) and use the cash for the all important mids/strikers.

I'm guessing that their GW1 fixture has been moved back to accommodate preseason friendless, it definitely isn't to give their players a 30 rest between season because they are on international duty next week.

I started with TAA Robbo last season and stayed patient for 15 gameweeks, it was a very bad decision and contributed strongly to my worst finish in six years. I would advise against starting with the double up especially with those fixtures.

True, but to add further context, nothing changed when Alisson returned. The clean sheets started when Gomez began to start.

I'm aware. Just saying. The wisest thing to do would be to assess their defence in tonight's game (I know it's not much, but it's what we've got)
