Aubameyang outperforms Salah in early audition for Gameweek 1 FPL captaincy

Arsenal 1-1 Liverpool

Arsenal won on penalties

  • Goals: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12.0m) | Takumi Minamino (£6.5m)
  • Assists: Bukayo Saka (£5.5m)

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12.0m) furthered his case for a Blank Gameweek 1 captaincy as he starred in Arsenal’s Community Shield final win.

The recently converted Fantasy Premier League midfielder scored an excellent first-half goal as his movement and pace caused all sorts of problems for Liverpool in the opening period at Wembley.

Stationed on the left-hand side of the front-three in Mikel Arteta’s 3-4-3 formation, Aubameyang exploited the space behind right-back Neco Williams (£4.0m) in the 12th minute to get his goal. With the defender standing off him too much, he was able to cut inside on his right foot and curl an effort behind Alisson (£6.0m).

“Big games, big moments, big players. (Aubameyang) responded really well to that kind of pressure. We are close (to a new contract for him).” – Mikel Arteta

The £12.0m man faces Fulham on the opening weekend of the Premier League season and Saturday’s performance is sure to only further increase the interest in handing him the FPL captain’s armband.

Such a decision could arguably be made easier by what Fantasy managers saw of Liverpool attackers in the Community Shield final.

With Leeds coming to Anfield in Gameweek 1, Jurgen Klopp’s men had also been the subject of armband attention, especially Mohamed Salah (£12.0m) – but he was certainly not at the races at Wembley Stadium.

The Egyptian put in a rather anonymous display, certainly a far cry from the shot-heavy shifts we saw at the back-end of Project Restart.

Meanwhile, Sadio Mané (£12.0m) spurned one of Liverpool’s best chances of the game, a poor touch giving him the wrong angle to beat Emiliano Martínez (£4.5m) from close range.

What makes Arsenal’s performance more encouraging, and Liverpool’s less so, is the disparity between the two clubs when it came to preparation.

It was the Gunners who came into the Community Shield final with less pre-season game-time under their belt, with some players managing just one training session before the game. Despite that fact, they shot out of the traps and, for the majority of the first hour, were the most alert in both boxes.

By contrast, Liverpool have already played two pre-season matches but took until the introduction of Takumi Minamino (£6.5m) to offer any real insight going forward.

“David (Luiz) had only trained one day just before the final. He was able to play 90 minutes. Thank you to the players.” – Mikel Arteta

A key factor in Liverpool’s struggles at Wembley was the increasingly organised shape and discipline on offer at Arteta’s Arsenal.

Although Minamino did find a way through in the second half, for the most part, the Gunners’ back-three did an excellent job of containing Liverpool and dealing with Andrew Robertson‘s (£7.0m) relentless crossing.

Staffed by Kieran Tierney (£5.5m), David Luiz (£5.5m) and Rob Holding (£4.5m), the Arsenal backline did an excellent job of crowding out Salah and Mané, beating them to virtually every ball. That certainly bodes well for their defensive prospects in 2020/21, especially with Fulham and West Ham up first.

“A lot of teams play in this formation and in the final third you want to be fresh. You want to force it sometimes. We didn’t have our rhythm so we couldn’t create the chances we wanted.” – Jurgen Klopp

“(I was pleased with) the courage of the team. How aggressive we were without the ball, how well we made the decisions to break the pressure of Liverpool and cause them some issues in the backline.” – Mikel Arteta

However, there is still some uncertainty on how exactly to cover Arsenal’s defence this season with none of the £4.5m options particularly nailed-on just yet.

Holding was a key man against Liverpool but William Saliba (£4.5m), a player from whom much is expected, was on the bench at Wembley.

As for the goalkeeper situation, Arteta stopped short of declaring Martínez the first-choice during his pre-match media commitments.

The Spaniard missed Arsenal’s first pre-season friendly due to quarantine from recent travelling, which is why Bernd Leno (£5.0m) and Matt Macey shared minutes at Stadium MK.

However, Arteta seemed to suggest that the main reason Martínez came straight back into the side was that he helped Arsenal qualify for the Community Shield in the first place, having played in the FA Cup final earlier in the summer. Fantasy managers will have to hope one more pre-season friendly can be squeezed in between now and Blank Gameweek 1 to give us more information on the subject.

“I have two fantastic keepers. I think Emi (Martínez) finished the season really strong. He was our goalkeeper in the FA Cup and he deserves to play this final.” – Mikel Arteta

The stock of Liverpool defenders appears to be travelling in the opposite direction. As already mentioned, in the first half especially, Arsenal looked much more dangerous when pressing forward, exploiting space behind the Reds’ backline.

It was not far from a first-choice defence either, only Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) missing from the usual suspects, but Liverpool still gave up plenty of chances early on.

Williams offered Aubameyang too much room in the first half, Joe Gomez (£5.5m) gave the ball away a little too often and even Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) struggled to keep up with some of the mistakes going on around him.

While this Liverpool defence has not become porous overnight, there are still enough troubling signs that Fantasy managers may think twice about investing in a double-up, especially with Alexander-Arnold left out of the Community Shield as a fitness precaution (although he is due to report for England duty on Monday).

Those on the lookout for cheaper attacking options in the Arsenal ranks will have seen more to like about Bukayo Saka (£5.5m) than Eddie Nketiah (£6.0m). The versatile midfielder was a key man for getting Arsenal moving in their counter-attacks during the first half, playing an excellent cross-field assist for Aubameyang’s goal and twice setting up Nketiah.

The former Leeds loanee has been exploiting the absence of Alexandre Lacazette (£8.5m) this week starting both of Arsenal’s pre-season games so far. With the Frenchman heavily rumoured with an exit, there is a chance that Nketiah could lock in the centre-forward’s role but his performance on Saturday was not quite at the level that will entice Fantasy managers.

Nketiah’s approach play was nice and he was certainly willing to receive the ball but the chances that came his way were not executed well enough.

Arsenal XI (3-4-3): Martínez; Tierney (Kolasinac 83′), Holding, D Luiz; Maitland-Niles, Xhaka, Elneny, Bellerín (Cédric 58′); Aubameyang, Nketiah (Nelson 82′), Saka (Willock 82′).

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Robertson, van Dijk, Gomez, N Williams (Minamino 59′); Wijnaldum (Brewster 90+2′), Milner (Keïta 59′), Fabinho; Mané, Firmino (C Jones 83′), Salah.

I'm thinking I might take the risk on Nketiah. Two great fixtures. Good placeholder for an emerging forward if he blanks. I get an Arsenal double for the great fixtures and a sharp sword.

    McCarthy Steer
    TAA Dier Vinagre Justin Johnson
    Auba Fernandes Ziyech Son Soucek

I can get Mahrez easily by switching from Son if need be. If I need Sterling it's trickier, but I'll likely WC if I need two City players that don't include Foden.

Unless Ziyech's injury rules him out I would definitely say stick with him on today's showing, as he is almost certainly first-choice and playing in a more attacking system. Alli is more liable to be changed with either Moura or Lo Celso and will be playing in a far more solidly functional Mourinho team this time around.

I was thinking that. Quick switch to Adams/Mitro (I know you have him but would get rid, upgrade to 8.5 and downgrade Son)

Nice side. Nyland more likely to play than Steer & Mitchell than Johnson

Nketiah & Saka both looking like good placeholders.

Just need to see how Willian & Pepe affect their starting spots. Hopefully we some more info from remaining friendlies if there are any.

Will Eddie start with Pepe and Willian waiting in the wings? The money spent on them means they won't be bench fodder.

I had a very similar draft but realised that the weak defence was an achilles heel. Johnson won’t start often, both Justin & Vinagre are likely to be replaced in their systems by incoming purchases by Rodgers & Nuno respectively. If you’re confident on Eddy starting then it may help to downgrade Mitrovic to bench fodder & upgrading the defensive options mentioned. I’ve had Dier for weeks but looking at the friendly line ups I got the impression Mourinho hasn’t quite decided on the CB partnership yet so Bavies seems a safer bet....

Love the midfield, very similar to my options although I’ve started leaning towards taking out Son as I think Spurs could take a while to get going.

I disagree with some of your assessment there Boleynwin dier will 100% be a lock in mourinhos team the guy loves him. There’s the odd press conference where he talks a lot about dier. Johnson is his bench fodder nothing more, he’s not planning to start Johnson. Vinagre likely w safe pick for first few months as they will likely have to solve Doherty issue first if he is sold. Justin is a huge risk but safe for first few weeks.

    McCarthy

I like the front 3, particularly having Martial on the bench, but I think it only works if you lose Trent.

I'd have Saka over both Barnes and Pereira, but I'll caveat that by saying I haven't seen much of Pereira.

Can you see Mourinho changing tactics? Doherty seems a more defensive minded Aurier role.

Mourinho quite likes Lamela centrally, then consider Alli too and I don't see where Son fits in. He'd have to play Sessegnon on the left which is unlikely, regularly.

Totally agree but he performed well at the end of last season and he was inches away from more returns in the gws from the restart

It comes down to it being son + the benefits elsewhere vs salah

I think with the fixtures son can match salah but the 3mil will definitely result in additional points gained

Regarding the Firmino debate on the previous page, a key point: Firmino's xG Delta was -4.96 last season, by far the worst in this Liverpool side. Second worst had -0.84.

In fact it was the second worst of all PL strikers, just behind McGoldrick.

In other words it had nothing to do with his super-special role in the team because he was still getting the opportunities to do better. He just underperformed, simple as that. As is evident from the fact that in previous seasons he was getting more goals in that same role.

The idea that his job isn't to be a proper striker or score goals has taken such hold that a clear drop in his goalscoring standards seems to get shrugged off.

I've thought for a while that his finishing is worse than usual because of the amount of energy he expends running. Sometimes I'll see him track all the way back to the halfway line, then run all the way back to the edge of the area to hit a shot first time that either has no power and is easy to save or wide. No footballer is capable of that.

What did 727 fans think of the Arsenal vs Liverpool match today?

Warning in advance: please take the following with a pinch of salt, it’s not meant to be any form of ‘concrete’ analysis with which to base your decisions off, but simply an overview of the general sentiment of the match around three players from a fan’s perspective (and does not deserve to be ‘hulked’!)

To do this, I pulled together every comment from the respective match threads on the Arsenal, Liverpool and r/soccer Reddit pages (yes, I had some time on my hands). I looked at three players which I’m sure we’ve all considered at one point - Salah, Mané and Aubameyang.

I only looked at comments containing their names (for Aubameyang this was “Auba” since this is often abbreviated), so any comments such as “SAAALAAAH” or “Mo” were obviously excluded. I also didn’t count replies where the comments referred to player(s) as ‘he’ or ‘they’ for example.

The comments are grouped into three categories - favourable (F), unfavourable (U) and neutral (N). Any comments in the favourable or unfavourable categories were done so based on the player’s actual footballing performance, rather than any other factors. For example, comments about Salah’s new haircut or Mané’s hairline were considered ’neutral’, regardless of opinion. Comments about Tierney putting Salah in a Tesco bag would have been considered unfavourable for the Liverpool forward - you get the idea. And yes, technically one person could have made more than one comment, they were all counted.

I know this might not add up to much in the form of ‘useful’ insight, but I found it interesting. I know there were always going to be more comments for Aubameyang because he scored, and keep in mind this is just one game and shouldn’t be taken too seriously. This is mainly for those who missed the game to understand the fans reaction. If it is useful, I might write something more automated for future match threads (although might have some problems detecting sarcasm - I’ll cross that bridge at a later stage).

Here are the results (Favourable (F), Unfavourable (U) and Neutral (N)):

    Arsenal Match Thread
    - Salah: 2 (F: 7%), 24 (U: 86%), 2 (N: 7%)
    - Mané: 3 (F: 7%), 33 (U: 79%), 6 (N: 14%)
    - Aubemeyang: 152 (F: 71%), 6 (U: 3%), 55 (N: 26%)

    Liverpool Match Thread
    - Salah: 12 (F: 18%), 28 (U: 43%), 25 (N: 38%)
    - Mané: 14 (F: 12%), 77 (U: 68%), 22 (N: 19%)
    - Aubemeyang: 37 (F: 56%), 2 (U: 3%), 27 (N: 41%)

    “Neutral” Match Thread
    - Salah: 12 (F: 25%), 17 (U: 35%), 19 (N: 40%)
    - Mané: 6 (F: 10%), 34 (U: 55%), 22 (N: 35%)
    - Aubemeyang: 52 (F: 58%), 1 (U: 1%!), 37 (N: 41%)

    *Overall Fan Reaction*
    - Salah: 26 (F: 18%), 69 (U: 49%), 46 (N: 33%)
    - Mané: 23 (F: 11%), 144 (U: 66%), 50 (N: 23%)
    - Aubemeyang: 241 (F: 65%), 9 (U: 2%), 119 (N: 32%)

    Summary:
    - As expected due to his spectacular goal, Aubemeyang drew the majority of the attention and favourable comments at 65% overall.
    - Fans seemed to blame Mané the most with 66% unfavourable comments, mainly due to wasted chances, diving and one or two reckless tackles.
    - Salah received the lowest share of the overall reactions of which 49% were unfavourable, with several commenting on his presence not being particularly notable throughout large parts of the match. You can take this as a negative as well, or a sign of defensive improvement from Arsenal and Arteta.
    - Interestingly, Arsenal fans seemed to blame Salah and find more faults in his performance (86%) compared to Mané (79%) in the other two match threads.
    - On all sides, there was plenty of mutual respect for Aubameyang and his importance to the Arsenal team, however in fairness he was up against a relatively young (19) and inexperienced right back in Neco Williams who I’m sure will learn from this.

And that’s all - hope you found it ‘somewhat’ useful!

Very interesting thanks, although imho Mane definitely had a more positive presence in the game than Salah and the Liverpool team seemed to recognise this and were passing the ball more his way.

Definitely - I only kept it to three categories, but as many of the negative comments about Mané were about his missed opportunities, you could also take this as a 'positive' over Salah because at least he was more involved as you mention.

Martial. He just looks more likely to score and is a genuinely explosive captain pick at home.

Martial, because his record was much better post-restart. Rashy off pens and Martial is playing up top. You also (somehow) save £0.5m

      Rashford
I think generally they are close in performance and goals in general, and last season Martial won
The midfield/striker switch though pushes it Back to Rashford imo

Rashford is playing as a mid so might have a slight advantage for a similar contribution but the 0.5 difference probably does swing it to Martial.

Both great picks - leaning towards (but still not certain) Martial for structural reasons more than anything else in having an expensive-ish striker on board

      Also allows Greenwood alongside Bruno

Martial is also an absolute joy to watch - when he’s on it he’s like Theirry Henry - but to be fair Rashford does a pretty good CR7 impression on his day too so not much between them

Might yet go with Rashford, Martial AND Bruno tbh

      Werner & Vardy

Vardy has great first 2 fixtures, if he fails - easy switch to Jimenez in GW3

I’m sure it’s been covered already but Messi.......
What would you want him priced at to make FPL more interesting?
I’d say 15-16 mil would mean big thinking for the rest of the team
Anything lower then it’s a no-brainer straight in perma captain for all

    FPL would be boring

      Covered to death.

I think 14m is the perfect price. Less and he'll be too good to ignore. Any more and I will avoid.

If he costs 14.5m+, that means he's 3m+ more than KdB. There's no way that's the case.

      1. Flaming Flamingo
        • 7 Years
        3 years, 7 months ago

I think he justifies the extra 3 million. He'd take pens off KDB and offers similar (if not more) creativity, with significantly more goal threat from open play.

        1. Camzy
          • Fantasy Football Scout Member
          • 13 Years

I don't think he takes pens off KdB. Messi has never ever been this big leader or have this big ego on the pitch. He's just an amazing player and will know his own penalty record isn't that good.

          1. Flaming Flamingo
            • 7 Years
            3 years, 7 months ago

Messi has taken 127 pens in his career, KDB has taken 7. Messi usually takes the majority of pens but shares a few with teammates, I'd imagine that'd be the case with City too. Especially since they haven't had a consistent taker in the last few seasons.

            1. Camzy
              • Fantasy Football Scout Member
              • 13 Years

Difference is he's coming into a new club. Very few players come in and immediately get put on penalties when there's a good taker, especially someone who's vice captain as KdB is. No way of knowing for sure, but we will see if Messi comes..

I did say 13m before. But I changed my mind. I think 14m could still be fair. Even 15 if there are clear bargains like last season where you could have run Foden and Greenwood and built an extremely good side with just 95m.

          1. Guba
            • 8 Years
            3 years, 7 months ago

Yeah that's fair enough of course. They'll have to find that sweet spot, I agree that 14 or 14.5 would be a good price in my opinion.

Palace's team was struggling for creativity last year, which seemed to have a knock-on effect on Zaha and they haven't really strengthened. Ayew or Zaha could be a bold differential if you've seen a better all-round team to back them up.

Actually I like unconventional picks and I respect wanting to steer clear of Salah on today's showing and recent form. Personally tripling up on potential clean sheets would be too much and I would probably remove VVD to spread the risk slightly.

    RMT please.

    McCarthy - Steer
    KWP - Manquillo - Vinagre - Douglas - Taylor
    Barnes - Soucek - Aubameyang - Salah - Son
    Kane - Werner - Brewster

I know defense is weak but i am hoping Liverpool defense wont be on the same level as past season. Was thinking Kane > Aguero GW2 and then probably Greenwood or someone else from Man UTD in GW3 depending on the performances.

I think Lamptey is being severely overlooked. No competition for that RWB position now Montoya has left. If people are considering Ryan at 4.5 I can't see why Lamptey is much more of a risk for the same price.

from GW2 onwards, team 2 is better, but I would personally still have Alli over Ziyech, and monitor how the latter does.

Can any Arsenal fans confirm on whether Martinez is a viable GK option, or is Leno soon due to return and take his place?

I wouldn’t be so sure about that. I genuinely think arteta is unsure of who will start. His post match comments make it clear that Martínez played today as he was in fa cup final. But arteta will be thinking if they did well against Liverpool then they can do well against any team. I think arteta has a tough decision Martínez also younger

i expect Leno will start very soon , if not gw1 then gw2/gw3, also think Martinez should be given his shot in goal, he's earnt his chance and i feel happier with our defence with him in goal, the outfield defenders seem more confident with Martinez there, Leno's not bad but Martinez has impressed me in his few games that he's had

    Werner, Pulisic or Ziyech?

Werner, Ziyech and Pulisic in that order, but there's probably not much between the latter two (aside from their current injury status).

Werner will be on the receiving end of a lot of midfield creativity and should be the focal point for a Chelsea side looking for another Champions League spot (or higher). A lot of what Pulisic and Ziyech create will go through him, although that's not to say the latter two won't score (and assist) their fair share.

If you already have decent forward options and could find better use of the 1.5m elsewhere, then see where that takes you but Timo gets my vote.

I wanna say Ziyech purely on price and risk factor.

      I’d prefer Pulisic to Ziyech.
      Scorer v Assister.

Plus Pulisic has had a season in the Premiership to get up to speed.
Both good options and feel both are probably underpriced by 0.5m
Werner in my team. All that talent to be serving him.

Double United on the bench in this draft

    McCarthy
    TAA Davies Dier Vinagre KWP
    Salah Auba Saka/5.5 Soucek
    Werner

    (Steer Martial Greenwood 4.5str)

Not great for GW1 obviously. Thoughts?

You've actually managed to get a reasonable GW1 team, even with those two on the bench. Could work out OK.

Not hugely keen on double So'ton and Spurs defs.. eggs, basket and all that!

Plus you'll need definite starters for GW1, without anyone on the bench, which rules out Saka for me.

My thinking around the double ups are kind of if I have one of them, it means I believe in it so why not get another one? If it looks like good value.. but I totally heat ya!

5.5 the only ones I like as a certain(?!) starter for GW1 is Armstrong.

        Tyvm!

Doing bit of forward planning on pricing - how does team below for week 1 and possible week 2/3 plans look? (If Ziyech fit will have enough for him over Greenwood week 1)

Gameweek 2 -option of Ings/Werner to Martial or Salah to Bruno
Gameweek 3 -Aubameyang or Salah to Sterling/KDB

    McCarthy
    TAA Justin Vinagre
    Salah Aubameyang Armstrong Soucek
    Werner Ings Mitrovic

    Steer Mitchell Taylor Greenwood

Mourinho is renowned for 'parking the bus' and 'second season syndrome'. With this is mind, would playing a Spurs defender each week be a legitimate long-term tactic?

I intend to do this for the first 10 weeks or so with their comparatively favorable fixtures.
