Scout Network

Introducing the Scout Network for the 2020/21 FPL season

The Scout Network is a new initiative designed to highlight the great things going on in the Fantasy Football community.

The last few seasons have seen a boom in content creating, social media influencers and toolmakers within – so we want to help celebrate that.

The Scout Network is designed to highlight the very best voices from the community and share and develop the excellent platforms they have crafted.

It contains a variety of different people all adding something unique and different to the community. These creators all remain fully independent but they will be involved in various FFS activities throughout the season and there will be weekly articles looking at what the different members of the Network are doing.

There will be an article every week to shine the spotlight on a different member of the network as well as updates on everyone’s content.

The Network currently consists of:

Super Streamers

  • FPL BlackBox
  • FPL Family

Spotlight on El Statto

El Statto is one of the Social Stars of the Scout Network. He has worked hard to gain a loyal Twitter following through the mini league competitions that he runs and during the break from football set up his Instagram page and his own website:

“I’ve been going to football matches for as long as I can remember, as a kid standing on a milk crate on the terraces to see over the grown ups. I remember Fantasy Football when it launched in football magazines and have been playing it ever since.

“I’ve been playing FPL since the 2006/07 season, although with nobody else I knew playing, my interest each season would often only last a few months. It all changed about five years ago when the company I was working for told me about their mini league. My competitive edge was sparked and since then I have managed three finishes of 20k or better.

“Having listened regularly to Mark, Joe and Granville on the Scoutcast, I heard about the #FPL Twitter community and decided to make a dedicated account to fuel my ever increasing obsession with the game.

“In the early days my Twitter account was mostly to gain access to more data that I could analyse and use to make informed FPL, rather than offering anything in particular back. As my involvement in the community grew so did my contributions and I started writing blog post for other FPL content creators. This sparked my desire to play a more active role in the FPL community.

“When the enforced break occurred earlier this year I used the gap in the season as an opportunity to learn how to do some editing and started to publish short videos. These would often focus on a particular player and their FPL appeal, spurring a growth in followings over on Twitter and also lead to me setting up my Instagram page (@FPL_elstatto) which is the perfect platform for the graphic video content I make.

“I also decided I needed a better way to service my increasingly popular mini leagues. I have been running Twitterliga and Survivor for many seasons and every year the number of participants continues to grow – as such I felt it was time to find a platform to run those leagues from properly as opposed to simply tweeting about them.

“A week ago I launched https://jumpersforgoalposts.info  Originally I planned to only use the website to run mini league updates, but it has developed since its original conception.

“The website will continue to be about the mini league but will also be a platform for other projects including blogging articles from me as well as from some other members of the community as well as key projects and tools to aid FPL decision making. There are also some fun projects such as the FPL community predictions for the season – let’s see how many of the content creators made accurate predictions for the year!

“Pre-season is the time when everyone tinkers and brings players in because they’ve just scored in a friendly. I wanted to design myself a planner just for pre-season that focused on the first 10 games, and in particular the first five.

“A few hours later I had myself a spreadsheet taking into account fixture difficulty, the blank games and comparing my selected squad against the overall gameweek difficulty. Originally this tool was intended to help my own FPL planning for the new 2020/21 season, but I decided to share it on the website and within an afternoon it had over one thousand downloads. The response has been incredible! You can download your own copy here https://jumpersforgoalposts.info/pre-season-planner/

“This season is set to be a really exciting one with the continuation of projects set in motion last season as well as the new website, blog articles and tool making as well as now being part of the Scout Network.”

Keep an eye on the Scout Network and the weekly update articles for more on what El Statto and the rest of the network partners are up to this season.

    Thoughts on this 5-3-2 please:

    McCarthy
    Trent, Doherty, Maitland-Niles*, Vinagre, Justin
    Salah, Aubameyang, Foden*
    Kane, Werner

    I'll monitor whether Foden and Maitland-Niles will start or not.

      Pretty decent. Obviously AMN and Foden are gambles, but it would be boring if we all had the same team! Nice range of captain options for the first few weeks too.

    Are there any midfielders that look likey to leave? I have an early draft in my draft league. Anticipating Havertz or maybe even Messi to come in at a later date. Only way I can pick them up is if one of my mids leaves the league.

        Would make the most sense with Pereira coming back eventually, but Taglifico and others have also been linked. Could be that Tag+Pereira are the preferred first choices when fit with Castagne as a *very* useful utility player, but we'll see.

        You're almost certainly right, would just be a shock to see Leicester play a wrong-footed fullback.

      Part of it is people justifying leaving him out, he's heavily involved in everything we do, he said that Ole told him to stop making so many forward runs so he doesn't tire himself out which just shows how much he wants to get involved at every possible opportunity.

    Little help here please! Any reasoning behind answers would also be good.

    A) Robertson, Armstrong/ASM

    B) Vinagre, Alli

    Currently on A as I think Robertson hitting 200 is likely a given and the 5.5 area in midfield looks to be an ok price point.

    However, B is tempting.....

      Too early to tell. A starting Vinagre would be a great option but don't like Alli.Personally if fit Ziyeck looks the real deal in what will be a very attacking side.
      Robertson looked like a left winger in the Community Shield but clean sheets may be a problem for Pool early doors.
      Armstrong/ASM are budget options that are priced that way for a reason. Armstrong the better of the 2 imo as in a more attack minded side.
      I would go for Ziyeck and Vinagre if no further Wolves defensive signing at LB.,

      Just been looking at Liverpool over the last stretch - the defence was really poor.

      No team in the PL conceded more than them in the last 12 games of the season. That run goes back to before lockdown and there was precious little rotation. You need to go back all the way to January to see interesting defensive form.

      I'm as interested as anyone in Liverpool defence but waiting to see form first. The opening fixtures are indifferent at best really and there's a major fixture turn in 9.

        Maybe run with double LIV def on wildcard.

    I created my draft from looking at value based on last seasons points. It's not perfect but it's some indication.
    In previous seasons this wouldn't normally get me a team anywhere near 100m but this season it did.
    So theoretically, my draft offers the most points per million (for last years players) – though I did have to make some tweaks when the fixtures came out.

    I've seen a lot of teams with a 5.0m or 5.5m starting in midfield, including a few managers with high finishes.

    To me from my value driven point of view, I kept thinking surely a Egan or Tarkowski would get more points than the 5.0 or 5.5m midfielder.

    I looked at a few figures for 5.0m players:
    Top 5.0 Mid = 105 points, top 5.0 Def = 133 points;
    Average top five 5.0 Mid = 100 points, average top five 5.0 Def = 123.6 points;
    Average top ten 5.0 Mid = 91.8 points, average top ten 5.0 Def = 104.4 points.

    Likewise for 5.5m players:
    Top 5.5 Mid = 118 points, top 5.5 Def = 143 points;
    Average top five 5.5 Mid = 111.8 points, average top five 5.5 Def = 136.4 points;
    Average top ten 5.5 Mid = 95.7 points, average top ten 5.5 Def = 117.2.

    So why aren't people dropping the 4th midfielder and upgrading a 4.5m defender to 5.0 or 5.5m?

    There seems to be a strong bias towards 3-4-3 and 3-5-2 from previous seasons, but maybe there is more of a shift towards defenders these last seasons? 4-3-3 seems almost controversial!
    I'm thinking that maybe only high end midfielders are worth getting, and because they are expensive we are practically limited to 3 at that expense. Then the value players for completing the team are then defenders.

    I seem to be in a minority with this this though.
    So, my question is: Where am I going wrong? 🙂

    1. George Sillett

        Before the fixtures, the team using value (with a bit of fiddling) would have been:
        Pope;
        TAA, Van Dijk, Doherty, Egan;
        De Bruyne, Rashford, Grealish;
        Ings, Jiminez, Mitrovic.

      "So why aren't people dropping the 4th midfielder and upgrading a 4.5m defender to 5.0 or 5.5m?"

      we sort of are, but we're dropping the forwards instead. I'm seeing lots of 5-4-1 and 4-5-1 teams. There's jusy not a lot of value in the forwards right not (a Brewster loan will change all of that)

      I'm currently looking at 4-5-1 or 4-4-2

      This sounds good but you should factor-in how attacking funds work v 'dead' funds in defence. It's a rather wonderful process and very dynamic. These monies sweep along and are very hard to pinpoint unless you track each move & yield properly and nobody ever does.

      Your analysis is correct but it's fair to say that:

      A. Owning a Midfielder is always more exciting
      B. Midfielders usually have a higher ceiling
      C. Form has more impact on Midfielder's points so if you spot that a 5.5mid hits form you can do really well

      It’s about flexibility at the start though ... you are not choosing a team for the whole game at the start ... start of the season is when many low priced gems emerge ... lundstram, pukki, Chilwell, Mount etc last year for eg. and you want flexibility to go for it

      Much easier to do Auba+ASM -> Bruno+Foden for eg .. than to downgrade defenders to get the extra 1mio

      My favourite is 4-4-2 to start ... 1 benched player in each slot gives maximum flexibility

      One thing to also consider is that comparing a 5.0m midfielder with a 5.0 defender might not be the best comparison.

      For a 5.0m midfielder, you are effectively spending 0.5m above the minimum 4.5m price. For a 5.0 defender, you are effectively spending 1.0m above the minimum 4.0m price.

      Using your numbers above, 5.5 mids against 5.0 defenders is a slightly more even comparison, altough defenders still edge it out slightly by around 10 points per season.

      FOMO is a huge factor imo, alongside captaincy. I'd be really interested in running a heavily premium defensive team alongside my real one though as a little experiment. Here are some other considerations though.

      1) Psychologically I imagine people much prefer goals. How often do you get that horrible "2, 2, 1" score from your defenders and think "not again"? But when my star 12m midfielder (keeping in mind that investing the 7.5 million saved in rocking with a 4.5 into defence is the difference between two 4.0 fodders and TAA+Robbo, with cash to spare!!) blanks, I'm much more lenient.

      2) Fun! This one is quite self explanatory.

      3) Captaincy/Boom potential- also rather self explanatory.

      4) Consistency across seasons. We know Salah is overwhelmingly likely to score 200+ again. Outside of triple Liverpool def, the returns of defenders are much more difficult to track year-to-year. Doherty? New club and potentially role. Sheffield? Potential second season syndrome.

      Difficult to say for sure though, but a valid strategy if you can find emerging value quickly and (relatively) cheaply. Once the value mid(s)/forward(s) arrive, a setup of 'premium' defenders, set in stone (or at least mostly) value M+F, and a rotating buffet banquet of heavy hitting M+F is very tempting. Easier said than done.

        Yes, basically we know there is going to be one or two of last year's Danny Ings (5.5-6.0 mids or forwards who get 180+ points). Last year, it was actually very difficult to distinguish Ings from all the players who briefly looked like the real deal but then tailed off. For example, as late as the time of lockdown, it was still looking very possible that DCL might finish with more points than Ings for the same price.

        Nonetheless, the majority managers have traditionally either: enjoyed the PROCESS of trying to find this player; or were afraid of the potential harm to their rank if they did not bother trying. In addition, hopping on bandwagons can often seem satisfying due to raising team value even if it fails to generate the most points.

      I would have gone big at back if there was a nice block of at least four fixtures - at a push 3 for the pricey defenders.
      But I just did not see the value given fixtures

      I ended up with:

      McCarthy ♦ (Nyland)
      ♦Justin♦Vinagre♦KWP♦Doherty♦ (Targett)
      Son♦JWP♦Aubameyang♦(Gordon - Greenwood)
      Jiminez♦Werner♦Kane

      Basically I have gone almost completely against your logic. Gut says those forwards will do well, given thier past performance and fixtures. And I like the midfield can't see it changing until gw3
      Who am I leaving out pool defence - don't like thier fixtures. And Salah is sluggish.

      Gw4 is where I think big on defence will work in other words liverpool because what other pricey defence is worthwhile?

      This game is all about adaptability in my opinion

      Think everyone is slightly overreacting to their recent fixtures. They had the least goals conceded in the PL last season and they have exactly the same players this term. I can easily dismiss the back end of last season after winning the title.

      Good team- easier to get Martial in for Ings in week 2
      ( Son to Ziyech, Alli or a benched Greenwood to have funds ) and Aubameyang to KDB week 3. If you want Bruno week 2 Salah only feasible option in this set up as you will want Aubameyang for Fulham game. Son to Bruno week 2
      means you need 1.5 m from somewhere.

        Cheers, finding this 1.5 is the issue I’m having, would rather have Bruno out of the United options at least to begin with - high ownership and easy to downgrade to Rash, Greenwood or Martial

      Have Greenwood benched.
      Changed my mind on KDB - prefer Pulisic in for Aubameyang gw3 allows me to get TAA gw4 (no pool until gw4 for me)

      Few will be making that Pulisic move as he wont start gw1 - Chelsea nice fixtures gw 3 and gw4.

    Might have finally cracked my back line issues by working out fixture pairings for the first 7/8 weeks (which has saved me a nice extra 0.5). Here's what I've got

    McCarthy-Ryan
    TAA - Egan - Coady - Vinagre - Justin
    Auba - Salah - Son - ASM - Armstrong
    Werner - Mitro - (Davis)

    0.5 ITB

    Where should I be putting the 0.5 (or should I save it in the bank; planning on getting Son to Bruno by week 3 so that bit of cash may help!)
