Scout Network

Introducing the Scout Network for the 2020/21 FPL season

The Scout Network is a new initiative designed to highlight the great things going on in the Fantasy Football community.

The last few seasons have seen a boom in content creating, social media influencers and toolmakers within – so we want to help celebrate that.

The Scout Network is designed to highlight the very best voices from the community and share and develop the excellent platforms they have crafted.

It contains a variety of different people all adding something unique and different to the community. These creators all remain fully independent but they will be involved in various FFS activities throughout the season and there will be weekly articles looking at what the different members of the Network are doing.

There will be an article every week to shine the spotlight on a different member of the network as well as updates on everyone’s content.

The Network currently consists of:

Super Streamers

  • FPL BlackBox
  • FPL Family
  • Let’s Talk FPL

Spotlight on El Statto

El Statto is one of the Social Stars of the Scout Network. He has worked hard to gain a loyal Twitter following through the mini league competitions that he runs and during the break from football set up his Instagram page and his own website:

“I’ve been going to football matches for as long as I can remember, as a kid standing on a milk crate on the terraces to see over the grown ups. I remember Fantasy Football when it launched in football magazines and have been playing it ever since.

“I’ve been playing FPL since the 2006/07 season, although with nobody else I knew playing, my interest each season would often only last a few months. It all changed about five years ago when the company I was working for told me about their mini league. My competitive edge was sparked and since then I have managed three finishes of 20k or better.

“Having listened regularly to Mark, Joe and Granville on the Scoutcast, I heard about the #FPL Twitter community and decided to make a dedicated account to fuel my ever increasing obsession with the game.

“In the early days my Twitter account was mostly to gain access to more data that I could analyse and use to make informed FPL, rather than offering anything in particular back. As my involvement in the community grew so did my contributions and I started writing blog post for other FPL content creators. This sparked my desire to play a more active role in the FPL community.

“When the enforced break occurred earlier this year I used the gap in the season as an opportunity to learn how to do some editing and started to publish short videos. These would often focus on a particular player and their FPL appeal, spurring a growth in followings over on Twitter and also lead to me setting up my Instagram page (@FPL_elstatto) which is the perfect platform for the graphic video content I make.

“I also decided I needed a better way to service my increasingly popular mini leagues. I have been running Twitterliga and Survivor for many seasons and every year the number of participants continues to grow – as such I felt it was time to find a platform to run those leagues from properly as opposed to simply tweeting about them.

“A week ago I launched https://jumpersforgoalposts.info  Originally I planned to only use the website to run mini league updates, but it has developed since its original conception.

“The website will continue to be about the mini league but will also be a platform for other projects including blogging articles from me as well as from some other members of the community as well as key projects and tools to aid FPL decision making. There are also some fun projects such as the FPL community predictions for the season – let’s see how many of the content creators made accurate predictions for the year!

“Pre-season is the time when everyone tinkers and brings players in because they’ve just scored in a friendly. I wanted to design myself a planner just for pre-season that focused on the first 10 games, and in particular the first five.

“A few hours later I had myself a spreadsheet taking into account fixture difficulty, the blank games and comparing my selected squad against the overall gameweek difficulty. Originally this tool was intended to help my own FPL planning for the new 2020/21 season, but I decided to share it on the website and within an afternoon it had over one thousand downloads. The response has been incredible! You can download your own copy here https://jumpersforgoalposts.info/pre-season-planner/

“This season is set to be a really exciting one with the continuation of projects set in motion last season as well as the new website, blog articles and tool making as well as now being part of the Scout Network.”

Keep an eye on the Scout Network and the weekly update articles for more on what El Statto and the rest of the network partners are up to this season.

Well, Southampton will score more than Fulham for sure.
Mitro will be involved in 40% + of Fulham goals. Adams?
Mitro will not be roatated. Adams?
At this point - I would choose Mitro but Adams is great prospect and can outscore Mitro - but will he?
No one can give you answer to this question.
We can't see future - just go with your logic - or gut feeling 🙂

The password to edit the cells is mentioned on the webpage just above the download button. It is fpl

The reason for the password is to prevent you accidentally changing the cells with formulas in and stopping the file from working.

5-2-3 is an insanely ugly looking formation, damn. I want to switch Armstrong out for Digne in my 4-3-3 but can't bring myself to. Maybe if I imagine it as a discount 3-4-3 it'll help. Worst scoring formation according to value too!

I've had a few drafts that allow 5-2-3. It does make sense with current pricing. Presumably the '2' are premiums that are ripe for "Upside Chasing", ha ha!

Without a 4.5/5 striker likely to get reasonably reliable pitchtime avoiding 3 up front seems impossible

Over the long term, absolutely. In the short term? I'd disagree, looking at fixtures and the options available to us.

        I agree.
        Most points are in midfield.
Unfortunately - in midfield we can't afford.
        Therefore, must be balance...

Yep flexibility is key imo. But then it's not too hard to adjust with say 2 premiums in midfield with one 8.0-9.5 and midfielder and still get the points potential. Just not a fan of 5-2-3

            I wouldn't cal 523 or 532 balanced lol 🙂
I'm on 442 at the moment, but that can change anytime 😉

442 is good, especially with so many options at 4.5 in defence and 5.5-6.0 in midfield.

I'm conventional so keeping with 343 atm 😉 GL!

Actually, I find talk of fixed formations somewhat passe. Yes, in the past 3-4-3 was optimal, then there was more emphasis on defence etc etc, but this season is a time of coronavirus and condensed schedules. I think we're going to see much more rotation and players being rested if not quarantined.

As a consequence, I'd advise having a fully active bench - at least ensuring the 3 outfield sub players are active. If you have 13 active outfield players in your squad, it makes sense to rotate them according to f&f. So I'm likely to use pretty much ALL the formations available over the season.

Agree, it's important to be flexible with the fixtures and players available. 5-4-1 could be the best formation for 8 GWs, then 3-5-2 for the next 12. A "one size fits all" approach never works in FPL, as we discussed when talking about FPL's pricing with midfielders and forwards.

Yes, although I'd hesitate over 4-5-1.
With one up top, are the other 2 strikers 4.5 fodder? If so, you run that risk of your main guy being rested and no replacement. If your 2 other strikers are active, they've really got to be 6m+ assets, too expensive to bench.

I currently have 5 active defenders including a pair of 4.5s, my 5th midf is Bissouma at 4.5 - which isn't quite satisfactory but I can live with it. My concern is my 3rd striker - I have 2 decent ones and a 4.5. I'm praying Brewster gets a move; otherwise I'm going to have to make sacrifices elsewhere.

That was a random example, I wouldn't dream of playing 4-5-1 lol. I'm not as bothered with 3 subs as you are, but that could change if the current situation continues.

4-5-1 is the worst, image if one of your attackers get severely injured and another one get a RC and in the same GW..

Okay Andy i know you hate the "if" word 😀

I'm starting with 3-4-3 as I think it gives me the most flexibility, despite the more options we got from premium midfielders now compared to premium strikers, but like the guy above me said, can change anytime.

Yep thanks for the advice on bench - it is always important especially with the uncertainties nowadays.

How much pitch time do people see the potential bargains of Foden and Greenwood getting? Irregular appearances effectively forces a fairly pricey benchplayer.

Greenwood nailed on every week unless Sancho joins, Foden is really difficult to determine for me as a City fan. More likely he'll play in midfield but KDB has one slot, and him, Bernardo, and Gundogan are competing for the other. The minutes may not be out wide either due to Torres' arrival. Going for the wait and see for Foden, Greenwood is great but Sancho links are still there and United grow closer to coughing up 120M every day so I wouldn't be going for him early.

    4. Kambo
      • 6 Years
      3 years, 6 months ago

Not worth the risk to jump on until proven with consistent minutes and games. Greenwood more nailed at this point for me as I don't think United will be changing formation, whereas City will rotate their more defensive central midfielders in tougher fixtures so KDB can play advanced.

MESSI arrival to FPL Universe could impact many FPL Drafts:
    1) Should we keep EXTRA 1M to accommodate Messi? 13M reasonable for him?
    2) If he joins FPL, will he play as a FWD or MID?

Obviously, this all is still up in the air but as a Messi fan it is so fascinating for me.

I hope the Messi situation clears soon, can't fix my head on any strategies or drafts :/

    1. Flair
      • 3 Years

Just have a plan for him if he joins, he should be no more than a 14M MID. He is very unlikely to join before GW1, even GW2 with the absolute shitshow going on in Barcelona so wasting your time on his arrival is just that, a waste of time.

      1. Game of Throw_ins

Yeah agree that even if he joins, mostly his gametime starts from GW3. Also wildcard can be an option if my FPL team get get disrupted a lot.

I am also thinking if such a structured team, So pardon me for guessing about yours, but is it downgrading a Vardy/Werner to Ings/Jimenez or even Ings/Jimenez to Antonio/Mitro & THEN Salah/Auba/10-11M to Messi ?

        1. Andy_Social
          • 11 Years
          3 years, 6 months ago

It would involve downgrading a midfielder and striker, but I don't want to be specific. It depends on circumstances, and it depends on whether I'd even want Messi.

Nearly everyone is assuming he's a no-brainer, perma-captain benefit. I'm not so sure. I definitely wouldn't get him for his first available game anyway.

Consider - he won't be match fit as he won't train with Barce. He won't have had time to develop an understanding with his team mates. I can foresee Messi playing a cute pass to a team mate who doesn't read it. In losing possession the oppo will spot the gaping gap Messi leaves behind him and a counter is on. This could happen multiple times.

Pep need time with the squad on the training ground. At about the time Messi would arrive, near to the close of the transfer window, he'll lose the entire squad to a second international break - Messi could be one of a tiny group left behind.
So I can see millions tearing up their squads taking masses of hits to get him in, being disillusioned, taking more hits and WCs, then I waltz in with Messi's price down half a million, and he's starting to gel with the first team..

Thanks for the detailed reply Andy. Some solid logical points there. If the transfer takes place as late as you anticipated above then surely it makes more sense to wait and watch for first 3-4 GWs atleast and anyways WC is there if someone has to tear apart whole team based on Messi pricing and eye test of all other players meanwhile.

If you're going to have Soucek in your team, might as well play him GW1.

That being said, Arsenal has been crap at defending aerials/set pieces forever, so Mitrovic could actually be dangerous GW1 - if he can get decent service.

A has two newcomers to their respective teams. Slightly unknown quantities with some uncertainties in both cases (Jose/new to PL)

B has 2 proven assets ! You know what you're going to get from them.

A has better fixtures though. And the money is more top heavy which is good. Having 7m stocked in Robbo can be bad if you need to use the money up top. Whereas Doc is a bit cheaper.

If going for a cheaper player I'd rather get basement & invest up the pitch.

Robbo is looking so fired up since restart. He's playing like a man possessed (except after the PL win which we should discount as he must be drunk)

And I'd take Jimenez over Werner anyday. Brighton Liverpool aren't good fixtures.

Jimenez loves teams who play with space in behind & play from the back (SHU City)

Are we at all worried about possible rotation with Tsimikas? I can definitely see Robbo benched some games for him. Seems too good of a player to bench sit the whole season...

                  Nope.
Robbo is by far best LB. The new LB will play Cup games at best to start. Klopp gengenpress ain't that easy to learn. Ask Naby !
Way i see it, if going short term: Robbo (attacking points spread over the season)
If long term: VVD + 0.5 nicks it

I think with this season being so truncated, rotation is going to be essential for all teams, especially those going for 4 trophies. This is why Chelsea, Arsenal, United are stuffing their squads full. Robbo will sit out a few games, as will TAA. I'm prepared to take that on the chin like I do with Pep-tation.

Depends if you have other transfers in mind, or 2Ft for GW3. There's not enough info to make a proper decision. If you have no other transfer plans at all, playing Ings over Mitchell is clearly preferable.

I honestly don't think it's crazy. I just consider it like you have a player who has a minor niggle but is guaranteed to be back in GW2.

Last year I benched Mane for a week after he got injured and it worked out very well. I don't see why people have such an issue with it. If MUN didn't have such good fixtures I wouldn't do it.

Think about if the reverse were true. Pool blank GW 1 and they have CPL bha in GW2. Are people going to all have 0 Pool players or preplan those transfers?

Everton are very solid under Ancelotti and have revamped their midfield, don't let post-restart beach form fool you. Arsenal have been well organised under Arteta too, as shown by the FA Cup Semi-Final and Community Shield. Both poor games for attacking teams and you can expect Chelsea to improve after signing a world class CB in Thiago Silva, a new LB in Chillwell and returning Kante to the CDM role. Terrible run of games for any team.

            1. pingissimus

So post restart counts for Arsenal but not Everton?

The Community Shield counts for more than Premier League games? Battered in cup semi final of course and got away with poor finishing

Everton wretched defensive run started well before lockdown

Lampard has yet to organise a defence anywhere.,His Derby side was leaky just in the way Chelsea have been - letting in loads of goals because they are poorly organised. Kante will make some difference.

                • 3 Years

Everton had nothing to play for, Arsenal did. Plus Ancelotti has signed Allan, a top defensive midfielder, and is going to be adding Doucoure to the mix. Add to the fact that Carlo's pretty solid at organizing a defense and I wouldn't back United to score more than 1, maybe 2 against them.

Arteta beat Wolves, City, Liverpool (twice), Chelsea, you don't do that without knowing how to organize a defense. As a City fan they well deserved that win, xG doesn't tell the story at all.

Chelsea aren't great, agree, but they've added Thiago Silva, Kante at CDM, Chillwell and that goes a long way no matter how naive Lampard is.

It’s not about wins though is it? It’s about keeping clean sheets - you say yourself they could easily concede 2 to United - I’d have that a decent fixture

Chelsea are a completely unknown quantity with as many as 6 new starters - Lampard is the one consistent thing there and as you say he’s naive.

Everton may be a bit better this time but hardly a fixture to run away from

Put all this together and not wanting any United now is OTT no 😀

The amount of goals conceded in those matches? 0, 0, 1, 1, 1. Not quite leaky at the back is it?

Doesn't mean you can ignore the excellent defensive signings, chief among them Thiago Silva, a player who can transform any defense with his class.

Everton will be a lot better this time, definitely a fixture to run away from. Ancelotti knows what he's doing.

It's a dreadful run of fixtures and I'm confident I'll be proved right, but agree to disagree 🙂

Looking over the entire season is a poor way to consider defensive ability in this context, considering Emery's horrible tactics and the improvements in personnel Arsenal are making - Partey, Saliba, Gabriel - and the improved defensive ability Arteta has showed.

I meant the games Arteta won with Arsenal that I listed - City, Chelsea in FA Cup, Wolves in the league, Liverpool in the league and the CS.

Now you’re making transfers that haven’t even happened 😀

Under Arteta Arsenal still conceded plenty. He looks to be a promising manager but you’re arguing on the basis of cup games - an Arsenal specialty after all - and deciding to ignore League form unless it suits you

No axe to grind here I’m simply amused by the inconsistency of your arguments. Carlo is a good defensive manager so that’s critical. Frank is a poor one so we can ignore that. Everton were poor post lockdown (and before) but who cares? Arsenal looked a bit better during that time so that’s all important 😀

Gabirel has happened, just not announced. Partey is close but agree that including him is wrong.

It's not being inconsistent, I'm looking at how it is realistically especially with transfers. Looking at last season is always useful but you're ignoring the changes in personnel and how they impact the team which is what I'm very confused about. When did I say to ignore Lampard's naivety? All I said was the upgrades in the team will improve their defense and last seasons numbers aren't the best predictor of this season, especially looking at their underlying xGA. Which is perfectly reasonable.

Everton's were unleashing midfields involving Davies and Siggurdson, now they've added Allan and soon Doucoure...

Arsenal were a lot better under Arteta and that's only going to continue, they may not have been perfect but the serious progress displayed - as shown by the matches I listed - will only continue.

I'm tired of this discussion and I'm very confident I'll be proved right, let's see what happens. Good luck!

You probably benched mane because it saved you a transfer. In this case, it's the start of a new season so many other viable options to move around with that sum of money rather than benching 10.5.

Seen you've been slated for that move, just pulling the leg here 😉

And doesn't it save a transfer? I know I want him starting GW2. So it saves me a transfer and unlike in the Mane situation I can handpick a team to cover his absence. What's even better is that I know for a fact he'll be back in GW2. That wasn't an assurance I had with Mane and I still kept him anyway.

It's Bruno placeholder vs Justin +4points.

I don't see a good Bruno placeholder that I wouldn't want to just hold onto anyway. And the problem with both Bruno placeholders (Son and Salah) is that it floats 1.5m. That's money I can be using to balance the team.

So it comes down to... Which of the 3 players do I value more? Salah, Bruno or Son. And I have chosen Bruno and Son...

Dani Ceballos will go on loan for another season to Arsenal. [Jose Luis Sanchez]

Extremely reliable for Madrid, consider it done. Great for Arsenal, adds much-needed creativity and was excellent after the restart. Better for Auba, the whole attack in general.

Willian played wide for Chelsea but Arteta says he want's him central. Ceballos can play deeper but he seems better suited in the Ozil role where he's far more creative than Willian. If Ceballos is nailed, it makes Willian somewhat peripheral.

Not really, Ceballos has been playing that deep lying playmaker role under Arteta so they could play together. He isn't much of a #10. The lineup looks like:

            Laca
            Auba - Willian - Pepe/Saka
Ceballos - Xhaka (Partey if signed)
            Tierney - Gabriel - Saliba/Luiz - Bellerin

I'm sure Ceballos will play, the other players will be fitted in around him.

        1. Andy_Social
          • 11 Years
          3 years, 6 months ago

MY view? Ha! My view is that FPL Towers have played a cute little trick on us, luring the great majority. Not consciously, but because the big points have been in midfield lately, they've bumped up the premium midfield prices and reduced defence and attack. People haven't really thought this through, see. They're still going heavy in midfield and neglecting back and front.

For me, the best value continues to be in defence, and I've got a trio of premium defenders as season-keepers. mine are TAA, Robbo and Doherty, all with significant attacking potential. I've got a pair of 4.5s that I think will see significant gametime - they're not intended as bench-patsies (one is Taylor, the other could be Vingre, Saiba - currently Lascelles).

Then, 2 big midfielders and 2 big strikers seems a decent balance, and plenty from which to select captains. I'll probably hang onto KDB for the season, but the other three I have in mind to try 'upside chasing'! So neither of my playing strikers (I have a 4.5 corpse on the bench) are intended to be season-keepers, but having 2 on the go (given their reasonable prices) along with 2 big midfielders seems the best strategy to me.

GW1 starts with KDB on the bench, Auba as captain, and a front 2 of Kane and Nketiah (or another 6m).

GW3 2FT will possibly be Auba+6m > Martial and Chelsea midf (Pulisic or Ziyech - or Harvetz). But that's not set in stone - over GW1-2 Kane could flop, as could Alli (who may be a placeholder for Greenwood, or maybe not).

I'm keeping options open, not fully expecting to get the exact squad I want until GW5 at latest.

I expect 4 blanks in the away matches, so that's not a problem. Arsenal and Sheffield United are decent defensively and I wouldn't captain him over other candidates, but that's more subjective. West Ham (C) is hat-trick material but Leicester are more tricky and United play West Brom that week so that's another captaincy opportunity ignored. So, imo you would be fine without him.

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years

Yes, the key question to ask yourself is, 'How many would i want to CAPTAIN him for?' Answer - one, maybe two. Not enough to get or hang onto him. If you play 'upside chasing' you could get him for the fixture you want to captain him for, then get rid the next GW.

If he can step it up to the next level, then he could be an absolute bargain.

Which is preferable (assuming you already have another premium captaincy option)?

    A) Salah + 4.5m forward (to be benched, replaced by Vinagre) +0.5m

    B) Ziyech + Martial

I think I am sticking to this Salah-less team

    McCarthy
    TAA Robbo Tierney Egan /Vinagre
    Auba Bruno Son Armstrong /Soucek
    Werner Mitro Davies

    - Cant find any good placeholders for Bruno in GW1, so he will be benched
    - 2 FTs in GW3 - Auba to KDB and AWB or Ake for Tierney (Arsenals fixtures turn difficult here)
    - Captaincy between KDB, Bruno and Werner
    - Occasional switch from KDB to Salah and back when required

Your thoughts please...any better defensive combo than Tierny and Egan? like a DIgne/Doherty and 4.5??

Fairly template overall, should do ok - Liverpool haven't looked as sound defensively during preseason, but I know you're not necessarily relying on CSs there. Most will be doing Auba to KDB in GW2-3, so that's a fairly straightforward one.

I'd give it a 6.5/10 overall, but definitely not bad!

    Chelsea Home Games during Restart
    Matches: 4
    Goals: 8
    Goals Conceded: 1
    Clean Sheets: 3

    Chelsea Away Games During Restart
    Matches: 5
    Goals: 9
    Goals Conceded: 14
    Clean Sheets: 0

    Make up your mind, Frank!

The possession based, offensive system clearly works a treat at home when the opponent is boxed in but gets found out away when teams are more offensively-inclined and find the gaps in the system on the counter. Interested to see how Lampard deals with this, I'm sure he knows the importance of defensive strength considering the managers he worked under. Silva, Chillwell, Kante at CDM should provide the quality he needs, now he has to make it work. If he doesn't, I'm sure Allegri will figure it out in 20/21!

Not bad, fairly template - I'd keep an eye on Brewster's loan situation, if anything comes of it. A couple of solid premium captaincy options in there too.

6.7/10 overall from me, looks good!
