The Fantasy Football Scout captain poll is one of the safest bets when it comes to selecting the best candidate for your armband each week – but it is not the absolute best.

After some extensive research, I have discovered that honour falls to the Rate My Team tool, which has outperformed the captain poll over the last three seasons and is the single best predictor of immediate captaincy points.

This article analyses how successful various captaincy selection criteria have been over that time, comparing captaincy poll winners, highest RMT scores, and various individual and team statistics against actual points scored.

Perhaps fixtures are better than form if you know where to look. Player and team attacking stats produce mixed results, with all but one statistic consistently underperforming the three-season dataset averageAnd with player big chances being the most unreliable of all the categories studies.

Meanwhile, targeting opposition stats seems to be a more reliable strategy. The single most successful stat to target seems to be opposition shots in the box conceded

DISCLAIMER: I am no statistician. There may well be gaps in my approach, and by picking the single best player to represent a particular statistic in a particular week, I have produced a solid but not massive dataset from which to draw conclusions. Any of the criteria discussed, and the results and conclusions drawn, have the possibility to revert towards some sort of mean as more data becomes available in the future. With all this said, I hope that the data, and my conclusions, are interesting, and I will continue to collect data in the future to try to improve the dataset and produce even more reliable results.

As this article uses extensive levels of Opta data, only those with a valid Fantasy Football Scout Membership can access it in full.

THE BACKGROUND

Vote in the FPL Gameweek 30 captain poll

A couple of months ago I decided to run the numbers for the Fantasy Football Scout captaincy poll winners, each week for the season to see how many points the winners got and whether it would have been worth taking a hit for them every week.

But that got me thinking too: are the results of the captaincy poll the best predictive indicators of Gameweek performance in terms of points gained? Are there other statistics which work better? Player stats? Team stats? xG/xGI? Opposition defensive stats?

Is there really “one stat to rule them all” when it comes to predicting the best attacking score in a given Gameweek? Taking three seasons’ worth of data, I decided to find out.

THE METHOD

Taking a combination of captaincy articles and members’ data stats, I decided to identify the ‘best’ single player in every Gameweek between 2017/18 and 2019/20 to represent each of a variety of different predictive categories:

  • popularity (winning the captaincy vote)
  • FFS RMT algorithm
  • a range of player attacking stats
  • team attacking stats
  • opposition defensive stats

In order to mirror the format of David‘s captaincy articles, the dataset used was ‘last four matches’ for player stats. Because I had to reconstruct a lot of the data from the Premium Members Area, which was often not captured in the older captaincy articles, I had to use last four Gameweeks for team stats. This does create a slight imbalance when it comes to the weeks following Blank and Double Gameweeks but I decided that it didn’t make much difference.

Looking at the data, the good and bad teams tended to be top and bottom of their various statistical categories for many weeks on the trot, smoothing out any slight variations. A few spot-checks revealed only the most minor of differences, with little or nothing to affect player/team rankings.

While Scout’s captaincy picks inevitably take home/away fixtures into account, my statistical approach did not consider this factor. This is because the captain articles earlier in each season were unable to make this distinction (with small sample sizes).

Comparing home and away data is particularly relevant to opposition defensive stats and in future, I will collect this information. I will, in due course, probably do back through the data as far as I can and populate these fields for past seasons.

However, as we will see, despite a possible bias towards the captaincy poll in the dataset, particularly at the expense of opposition defensive metrics, the results suggest that we ought to target defensive stats even without taking home/away into account.

To make the results fair, to model what could realistically have been predicted without hindsight, I decided to limit the list of players to those above a certain popularity threshold. This meant limiting my selections to those players who made it into the top 10 in the captaincy poll in any given Gameweek. There are big scores from the most differential of differentials on occasion, but it cannot realistically have been expected that any serious player would have trusted them with the armband, so these less popular players were excluded from the picks. As it happens, this does not matter much for two reasons:

  1. The attacking stats tend to be dominated by premium picks
  2. Ranks 7-10 in the captaincy picks tend to scrape the barrel somewhat anyway, usually getting down to the 1% range.

My criteria for selection were as follows:

  • Captaincy poll – This was self-selecting
  • RMT – The same applies
  • Player attacking stats – The player who topped the attacking stats in each category. If that player didn’t make the top 10 in the captain poll I would move onto the next player and so on. If none of the captain contenders were in the top 10 for a given stat I would leave it blank. Being, for example, the 15th best player for touches in the box is hardly comparable with being the best player for shots in the box, and I didn’t want to skew or dilute the data. The categories are: player touches in the boxplayer shotsplayer shots in the boxplayer shots on targetplayer big chancesplayer xG, player xGI.
  • Team attacking stats – The player ranked highest in the captaincy poll whose team topped various attacking stats. The categories are: team shotsteam shots in the boxteam shots on targetteam big chancesteam xG.
  • Opposition defending stats – the player ranked highest in the captaincy poll whose opponent had the worst stats in each of the following categories: opposition shots in the box concededopposition big chances concededopposition xGC. When the captaincy poll started using opposition shots on target conceded I started adding it as well (past two seasons).

As there are only 19 possible opponents a player could face, I decided to limit the ‘worst’ teams to the worst five in each category. Expanding further would push opponents into mid-table range, and this could actually be quite respectable, so I didn’t want to skew the data by stretching this too far. Again, if no teams in the bottom five for each of these categories had a match-up against a top-10 captaincy candidate I left this datapoint blank.

Other things to note:

Blank / Double Gameweeks

I did not collect data for these. This is mainly because captaincy polls recognise players with two fixtures, and will tend to zero in on one or two top picks, whereas stats would not necessarily favour Double Gameweek players, skewing the numbers towards captains who play twice.

Blank Gameweeks limit the pool of players available to the point where, potentially, the averages are brought down, possible unevenly.

There was more than enough data over three seasons to be able to pull out hundreds of data points without factoring Double and Blank Gameweeks in.

I am aware that these altered rounds cause slight problems when we take subsequent player and team stats which look back over the last four matches. As stated above, I saw enough in the stats to suggest that players/teams tended to top their categories for many weeks in a row, and so discounted this as a serious concern.

Players tied on a certain stat

I always went for the player with the highest captaincy poll rating as a tie-breaker.

Note that I also made no weighting distinctions between players, in that a runaway leader in any of the categories are treated the same as narrow winners. I will try to think of a way of weighting those categories in the future to see how accurate they are at predicting points.

When I had finished I had something which looked like this (this screenshot is an arbitrary portion of the spreadsheet):

Best players by position:

This will be the rout of the week. Forget Arsenal or Liverpool, Saints will walk over Palace in this game

      In two minds here

Previous answer was that the Palace defence is the same personnel that held Spurs extremely comfortably to 1-1 at end of season. Kouyate is an international CB and Mitchell not really a downgrade on PvA when it comes to defence,

The wrinkle is McCarthy possibly out in midfield. Centre midfield is key to Palace defence and no MCCarthy or Kouyate there and Luka absent apparently is a worry.

Wouldn't go there. Selhurst is a goal graveyard typically, RH knows how to set up a defence and Palace against non top 8 sides almost invariably do well defensively

Palace were consistently dire against top 6 away last season. Played way too passively and just asked teams to roll attack after attack out. United away (early on) was just about the only success story.

Preseason signs so far are that a more progressive approach is on the cards. If Eze features Palace may revert to 2018/19 model where quick breaks on the counter feature highly on the game plan.

But can't see Palace conceding fewer than 2 in any scenario really. It's more a question of how many will go in at the other end.

So much of it felt like poor methodology, not surprisingly the winner was something that could only be accessed in the members area.

Sorry you feel that way, TL. It will be clearer in the future as I will be able to link back to my methodology in a separate article and present just the data.

Re the RMT coming out on top - It seems as if you are suggesting that point of the article was to find in favour of members' area stats, is that it? There are easier (and less time-consuming) ways to try to curry favour with the FFS site owners TBH.

Well written article. A lot of work also included. Thank You. RMT-tool winning Captain poll was a small surprise for me. I believe the biggest reason for that is fear of high ownership. Psychological thing, that losing 20 pts feels worse than winning 20 pts. Or perhaps someone like Aubameyang is doing well in RMT but people vote Salah since he is in their team?

Thanks, that means a lot. I am sure it could have been shorter with a full edit but at the same time I wanted to explain everything I was doing so that the method was transparent 🙂

Completely agree. RMT is dispassionate and ignores ownership. If you go against the captain poll/ownership and are burnt you might never do it again, but if you consistently target another method I think you could have great success.

I spend Four seasons analysing various captain methods in real time, including the RMT feature and the polls etc. It was all published on my now deceased website.

That was from 2014 to 2018 and at that time we found no method to beat just picking from the top of the poll. It may well be that RMT has improved since then, and that the polls are less accurate.

Many knowledgable managers no longer hang around on scout and are on twitter, in private groups etc, so may not participate in the poll.

When I was referring to dodgy methodology I was referring to you leaving out certain events like when a player scored zero, or was sent off etc. Added to the difficulty of working backwards rather than in real time it makes it a little more unreliable.

Did not mean to offend anyone, ws just giving my opinion

Thoughts on this ? I’m taking a slightly different approach for the first 3 Gameweeks - there after I will draft in city, United players and TAA using my wildcard, Liverpool’s defense hasn’t looked itself lately and I’m banking on them conceding a goal in at least ⅔ of the opening games - I may be wrong! But this is how I line up - positive criticism and advice is appreciated.

Hmmmm I’m thinking the same, but This is just for the first 3 Gameweeks - after that I plan to wildcard cause of United’s favourable fixtures - plus a double gameweek will be expected for city, United so that could be a plan

Ayew over Nketiah I believe for probable minutes and recent record too for that matter.

I'd be tempted to try and squeeze Gomez in over Saiss. Getting slightly dubious about Wolves defence with personnel change. Maybe the centre will hold and the wingbacks are irrelevant for cs

Aurier got 1 goals, 7 assists vs Doherty who got 4 goals, 8 assists.

I think he could well be worth it. Doherty will play more and is creating for better finishers in Kane, Son and Alli.

Only issue is he won’t be getting into central positions as much and therefore his shot count will be lowered - assist potential is still great though but it’ll be a 4 at the back rather than a 3 so won’t be as much of a wingback getting forward

Jose does like his RB to bomb forward though and he's clearly chosen to buy Doherty for that reason

                    Not the case.

Mourinho teams have often had a ridiculously aggressive RB. Ivanovic and Maicon come to mind. He plays 3 at the back in the attacking phase with the LB (Davies) tucking in to the back 3 and the RB high and wide.

Doherty being high and wide is the worry though. His attacking threat as it stands comes from being in the box more than any other defender. Wide is bad.

Aurier's stats were decent, he just had poor execution. I think Mou has bought Doherty with the intent of having him be extremely attacking. I think having defenders that basically act as mids (e.g. Trent) is a very good way of using your budget, and I think Doh could act as that for Spurs this year

No Soton expert, but I think if how he performed after lockdown is repeated well worth 5.5. Apparently he had some niggles that limited his minutes a bit, but hopefully over those now.

His record is pretty great, but does Ole even know what he is supposed to be doing with him or is he just a gift from Ed as we aren't getting anybody else?

I’d be surprised if he starts GW2, unlikely to immediately displace Pog, Bruno or Matic
                Definitely a wait and see
Price maybe around 7.5 or 8.0?

You say "displace Matic". In reality both Fred and McTominay had more starts & minutes in the PL this season than Matic and Fred was starting over him again at the end of the season in their final EL games.

Getting in ahead of Matic won't be that difficult.

I'm slowly losing my nerve on the bench Fernandes plan. Not because it's bad plan but because I don't know if Man Utd are worth investing in. Their fixtures are only okay. And then with Rashford niggles, lack of pre-season and International duty for Bruno and Martial, I'm half expecting GW 2 to roll up only to find out Martial or Bruno have COVID19 and are not allowed to play.

There are so many variables. If everyone was fit according to plan I would stick with the Bruno bench plan but it's looking less and less secure. I'm away on holiday from Thursday - Tuesday and will do my best to get some FF detox in before the last minute cram (going to have 4 FanTeam drafts) ahead of deadline.

We will see. I have two teams now. MUN plan and no MUN plan. Will see if things change when I get back and friendly results are digested etc.

I think the power of Mane as a differential in GW1 over playing a fodder then having strong captains for GW2 and GW3 offsets this. By GW2 I will have a full playing bench too. It's the only way I can see to deal with this frankly horrendous fixture curve ball that we could all do without!

FanTeam dude. Whoever said that it was an unfair advantage to have multiple teams in the game has no idea how freaking hard it is to manage multiple teams. 4 is probably going to be very hard for me to actively manage. There are guys that have like 20+ teams. I genuinely think I can beat them for highest single placement purely because I can devote more time to each one of my teams. Marathon not a sprint.

So, the moral of the story is: don't have planned transfers on a WC, which effectively what GW1 is.
I thought after so many years, you'd have grasped that one by now 😉

Not sure he's talking about planned transfers, but benching an asset with no game GW1.

Knowing Camzy, he definitely has transfers planned lol.
WCing or setting up a GW1 team should certainly not involve benching anyone over 4.5m. You're handing points over in the hope that you maybe gain them back in future multiple GWs. It's a horribly restrictive way to play and has no guarantee of success. Neither does attacking the early GWs either of course but I'd much prefer to have a go rather than sit on my hands.

Lol - fair enough, you've more experience with the guy than I have!

I don't think it's as clear cut as that myself - I'm certainly not benching anyone with no game GW1 but that's because there's nobody that I'm going to lose my mind over and feel like I absolutely HAVE to have GW2. If people are 100% planning a transfer for a certain player GW2 come what may, mathematically I don't think benching the player you want for 1 gameweek works out bad if you have a reasonable bench replacement - depends what style of player you are. Don't think there's much in it points expectation wise....

For me though it's start with the best team you can, re-evaluate as you go. Feel like you're the same.

I can see money in Bruno plan as Salah seems not so hot in friendlies.

In a nutshell I'm asking myself can VVD "cover" Salah points in GW 1 ??
Keeping Bruno on bench so that can try N save FT in GW 2 where everyone will go crazy with hits/WC's

Don't doubt your plan because of possible covid. Part of the upside of this plan is you preserve your WC for when covid screws things up and just use transfers to get multiple City and United assets.

People that are already planning a early WC are the ones taking a gamble, you're being 'conservative' now so you can be reap the rewards later. I'm benching at least one Utd and City, maybe even gambling on an entire gw1 blank bench. I could get triple City/United for a double without spending more than -4 probably. I'm just hoping i make LMS gw1 and i'll be good for quite a while.

The double won't be until much later. GW14 at the earliest by which time my team will be completely unrecognizable.

I'm just trying to justify having Doherty really. Without CSs to supplement his attacking returns then 6m seems too much of a stretch.

Depends how you look at it - certainly worth 0.5 over Toby A and Lloris and probably 1 million over Dier and Davies who ahve not much attacking threat and get plenty of cards too.

Basically the squad is fully bought into his philosophy, willing to leave everything on the pitch for him which leads to improved performances and better results. That intense devotion falls in the third year and Jose rarely makes it better, causing an implosion

Maybe that could be the MUN plan. Buy like 4 Pulisics to dribble around the outside of the box and get penalties for Bruno to score.

                                  Thoughts on this team?

                                  McCarthy
                                  TAA Doherty Justin
                                  Salah(C) Auba Alli Saka Soucek
                                  Werner Ings

                                  Nyland; Mitchell, Vinagre, Brewster

Only problem is, no United players until GW3.

Someone like me doesn't deserve such a well written article, as I usually just scroll down to the conclusion. Thanks for the effort, I've read half of it, and will ration the other half slowly over the coming week!

Who has the patience for 4k+ words these days? Really glad you found it helpful. As I have said in a few of my replies, future articles will be more succinct as I will link to the method in this article and share just the updated results.

Personally I've always been choosing my captain based on the Anytime Goalscorer Odds, would have been interesting how it compared, but I guess you need to have been collecting that data every week before putting it into this write-up so I understand why it hasn't been considered.

I think I'm going to add RMT to my consideration along with the AGS odds from now on, going to continue to ignore the captains poll, your analysis has reinforced my feeling that it is subject to bias.

You really can't go wrong with the captaincy poll, but if you deviate, deviate hard XD - stick to your guns and let the numbers average out. You could well end up a few dozen points ahead of your rivals after several weeks by targetting a different metric.

Nice balance. Similar to mine, didn't think about saka though, was worried about Willian and Pepe both being too much of a threat to him

Will Donny van der beek be nailed? There's suggestions he'll play instead of Matic, but for Ajac he was predominantly CM rather than too defensive, hence the decent attacking returns....

I've been enjoying some West Ham highlights from the restart period. It's bizarre that Soucek's main weakness appears to be as a defensive midfielder 🙂

                                    😀

The new Lund - he’ll lose his place because he’s only so so at what he’s supposed to do.

Worryingly he’s the one permanent feature in any set up I try

With those fixtures?! Rather just save 0.5m, no?

Take a peek at his career scoring record. Yes it’s another league altogether but he’s no 5.0 player. Add in that he’s a set piece specialist and poor fixtures mean less - doesn’t need possession and open play to return.

Its about time we stop explaining this stuff to everyone 😀

Granted their is no guarantee of success, but at only 5m, its worth a shot. Can always get rid...
