The key underlying statistics I consider when picking my new FPL squad

I think I’ve written about enough subjective theories and opinion until now. What I’m doing with this article is I spent some time in the Premium Members Area and I thought I’d give you some relevant handpicked stats that are simple yet relevant.

As this article uses Opta data so extensively, only those with a valid Fantasy Football Scout subscription can access it in full.

Without wasting any more time, let’s dive in.

Who are the best and worst defences?

All of this data is but a snippet of the notes I take whenever I spend time in the Premium Members Area. Hopefully you found this information helpful as you prepare your team for the new season.

Don't know why but I feel Sterling to be the FPL king this season with 20+ goals and 15+ assists (If Messi doesn't come)

Could be gold. With aguero not getting younger and fitness issues feel pep may look to sterling more now. Not sure Jesus is totally trusted by pep

Pep loves Jesus ( because of his pressing, and being technically adept)

Err no he didn't! He was on fire post lockdown. 11 goals in all comps I think. Including a hatrick and a double in prem.

He got 9 gols in 10 prem games post lockdown. That is red hot, on the boil.

I've gone Rodak - his save stats are exceptional and I think Fulham will play a low block to encourage long shots due to slight lack of pace in defence.

It's a gamble but I think could end up with a lot of save points an bonus when they get a Clean Sheet.

Rodak is a fabulous keeper, but (i) Fulham will concede bucket loads and (ii) there are rumours of Fulham looking to get in another keeper (I have no idea why they would, but it seems to be a thing)

Yes I have seen the Gazzaniga rumours but I think it may be due to Bettinelli wanting to move for to become first choice somewhere.

Under Parker, Fulham's defence has changed and there were a lot of 1-0 shut outs last season. The last time they came up they were winning a lot games 3-1, 4-2 etc. Also there's Virgil van Mike at CB this time round...

It is a gamble but I'm going to see how it goes until I wildcard.

Don't like 1 up front unless Brewster gets a loan.
Doc is a season keeper if you have him.

    TAA, Saliba, Vinagre, Davies, (Johnson)

    Salah, Auba, Alli, Soucek, 4.5

Best Spurs' defensive cover other than Doherty?

    A) Ben Davies
    B) Dier
    C) Lloris

Davies edges it on the comparison tool between A & B, but is Dier more nailed? Does Davies have any competition for his place?

    Any input greatly appreciated.

Both equally nailed I'd say - Davies competion is young Ryan who is a great attacking player but wasn't even a good full back in the Championship - guess he'll play in Europa.

Need to sacrifice something here I think. Davies > 4.5 and then a 4.0 > Vinagre should give you a solid 4-4-2 for the first week.

Also takes away your GW4 transfer so less likely to take a hit

I plan on moving Brewster to Davis if he's not sent on loan by the GW1 deadline. I don't want him taking up a LIV slot in my team, as it might cause problems later. A 4.5 fwd is just benchfodder anyway 🙂

Getting more and more settled without Werner in the draft to start the season.

To be clear, I don't think he's a bad pick. I think he'll be very good in fact and may be bringing him in as early as GW3, but I think starting with him is not preferred and here's why:

    1. Super high ownership in GW1.
This means that going up in price is very difficult. Last year, Sterling and Salah were good examples. Both of them scored double digits in GW1 and didn't go up right away.

    2. Liverpool in GW2.
If Werner does not score in GW1, which is quite likely against an improved Brighton defense with Veltman and White, or he gets taken off early or whatever, he then is looking at a GW2 vs Liverpool while Martial has CPL. I imagine a lot of managers will rework their plans of doing Salah or Son > Fernandes and instead look to do Werner > Martial instead which means his ownership could melt very fast. His high ownership will protect him for a while but two blanks against Brighton and Liverpool and he's going down. Not to mention it's one of the hardest fixtures on the calendar and he'll be expected to blank.

    3. Two great fixtures to observe
These two fixtures are really nice to observe Chelsea and how they play against a mid-table side and vs a top side and where Werner might fit in. Maybe he doesn't start upfront against Brighton and then does against Liverpool. Maybe we see him do better against top sides and playing more for the team against Brighton. I think the chances of getting seriously hurt in the first two games without him are much much lower than the information you stand to gain and because his price will be fairly protected from rises (and falls I guess) you should be able to make a decision in GW3 if you plan well and save some FTs.

I love the logic, but as soon as I take him out, I just get a bit nervous as to where to go - I think having him and then considering Martial is an option to consider.

I remember when the fixtures were released, you said CHE

I do think they have good fixtures. However, Werner's ownership slightly changes things and Liverpool in GW2 presents a nicer opportunity to wait and see rather than rush in head first.

      2. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years

I'd removed him but got him back after reading this article by LR. I've got a ridiculous front 3 of Werner, Vardy and Martial. I expect one to flop but dunno which yet. After GW3 Auba to KDB, I'll have had enough time to do a 2FT to lose tghe floppy striker and a temporary midf for an emerging top midfielder and an emerging cheap striker.

Points 1 and 2 relate to his value changing which I don't think really matters if he's going to be a season keeper which I see him being.

Not having him does give the option of having a very balanced team though.

Are you starting with Ziyech either?

No Ziyech. Injury risk, and again, point 3 is the most relevant. It is perfect for wait and see.

I also have a really clean way with my current team to get two Chelsea. Roll a FT in GW2 and then in GW3:

        Auba + Mitrovic/Adams > Werner + Pulisic

Valid points if your set-up allows it. I think most will be scrambling for manchester players GWs 2-4 so if he does start off on a flyer you'll need a tremendous amount of patience or succumb to an early hit.

I dont agree. Season keeper for me because I anticipate his total score to be well worth 9.5. Happy to take the odd price fall because i wont be selling him. Your get chelsea in for gw3 plan is my get city in for gw 3 plan so I dont want to be putting chelsea transfers in when I have no city players yet.

      Salah to Fernandes gw2
      Auba to kdb gw 3

Do not want to be thinking schucks I have no chelsea or city in gw 3 and I am already behind because Werner hot off to a flyer against Brighton and pool

I think his minutes will be managed and he might spend some time wider to accommodate Abraham and Giroud getting some minutes. I think that rotation will be huge this year once European fixtures get underway and I am factoring in rotation risks into my team planning.

Because of his price, he's not that hard to get in if he hits the ground running, so I'm happy to monitor.

For just 0.5 you can go from someone who's never kicked a Premier League ball to the current golden boot holder. I don't have any strong feelings about Werner, but it's food for thought.

I think it depends if you feel confortable booking transfers upfront (gw2 son->rashford, gw3 salah/auba->kdb/sterling, gw4 x->chelsea player for example)
Basically with this tactic you are bound to either wc gw5 or take some hits to get in form players alongside the planned transfers you made in preseason.

If you want to save your wc for later and are hit-averse, then starting with timo and man utd mid gives you just one premade transfer planned (auba->kdb most common) and provides you with more flexibility for early season transfers.

Both tactics are valid in my opinion it just depends which you prefer.
I am going without any CHE and MAN UTD players and instead am going with Son, Alli and Vardy all of whom have great price points for switching to other assets once I get to see which ones I like the most (Vardy-> Wener/Aguero, Son-> Rashford, Alli->Greenwood/Pulisic/Ziyech/Havertz)

My main argument against this is planning in potential transfers for anything other than Manchester players over the opening gameweeks. I don't want players in my starting squad who are a rotation risk, I just want to be able to transfer my more expesnive players from about gamweek 3 onwards, and it will probably be to bring in the likes of KDB, Sterling, Martial, Bruno or rashford.

If anything, having Werner allows flexibility to move on to Martial by GW3

      1. I don't like factoring in ownership as an issue
      2. you can shift him to martial in week two if you want, but more likely he is brought in for week 3
      3. Agreed, but a great opening fixture, great from week 3, and we are all getting united and city assets in weeks 2 and 3, so really to have another one to deal with on top seems crazy.

I think he has the potential to be another fernandes, I'm not waiting, plus
      - Kane - no ta, got son
      - Aguero - no go area week 1
      - Vardy - no ta
      - Jesus - no go area week 1
      - Martial - no go araa week 1 (or bench)
      - Jimi - no ta, wolves not free scoring, fixtures not great
      - Ings - massively overperformed last year, prefer Jimi at that price

DCL, Wood, Antonio - DCL maybe but sometimes he doesn't even look like a footballer
So bascially we are left with
      - Werner
      - Mitrovic

I don't see the argument for going without him, but it does depend on your team structure.

Those thinking of Bruno, what are your moves?

    A) Get him now and bench
    B) Being a placeholder now, who??
    C) Downgrading from Auba/Salah/Mane, Who??

A and starting Soucek instead. Don't want to use transfer on Bruno in GW2, would rather have it handy for Martial or anyone exploding in GW1.

      A.

I don't like/can't be sure of any placeholder. There is no really obvious pick. If say Son/Spurs had WBA then I think I'd be more inclined to take the risk. But Everton at home is not a cakewalk with their new midfield. Pepe is unreliable, and Ziyech is unproven and also away from home. There is no obvious placeholder top pick.

C is an option. But you're not gonna downgrade Auba before WHU. Planning to do Salah > Fernandes in GW2 floats 1.5m and will be very tough to do if he hauls as he's expected to against Leeds.

Therefore A is the most logical option to me if Fernandes is a priority. The other option I quite like is D which is don't bother with Bruno and plan to be without him.

If I want any asset from United, Bruno would be my first pick

            Alonso and Cancelo is fair.

Hey everyone, I've been reading article but staying away from the comments so far this year, so here is my first attempt at a draft, any comments appreciated.

    Pope (Button)
    Trent, vinagre, Dallas, (Branthwaite, Johnson)
    Aubameyang, Son, Debruyne, Klich, Souchek
    Vardy, Ings, Davis

    0.0 in the bank.
at the moment im not sure how to navigate week 1 blank. early wildcard, maybe, early mini wildcard, probably.....
I really want pope set and forget, and I really want debruyne, but do I want to book in 2 transfers straight away? ugh... thoughts please!

Really don't recommend Pope set and forget especially because he misses GW1.

If you want a set and forget until you wildcard, McCarthy will do fine. Or if you're really insistent, you can get Lloris at 5.5m.

Don't play with blank players in GW1, they're all still in doubt in GW2 because of this Covid problem, no one is 100% sure fit especially with Traore, Pogba, etc now contracted virus.

Best is to start with fully fitted players for GW1 and then take a hit if necessary, or maybe Ings > Martial is a good bet cause Martial is good at home, Bruno or Greenwood can wait later

For me, Pope becomes Lloris, too much Leeds to gamble early. Vardy becomes Werner and KDB can turn into Havertz or Willian

      Good luck

Wasn’t even considering benching a Man U player, but tbh looks ok like this

    McCarthy
    Robbo - Doherty - Dier - KWP
    Alli - Auba - Soucek
    Ings - Werner - Mitrovic
    (Ryan, Bruno, Lamptey, Bissouma)

So the plan is Bruno starts GW2 ofc for Soucek. I also rotate McCarthy and KWP with Ryan and Lamptey. Nice to keep Alli also, sadly had to ditch Kane to facilitate this and the defence but got to compromise somewhere I guess

Double Spurs defense is pretty bold. I don't want to do that because I have a sneaking suspicion that I might want to double on their attack. Will take two weeks to decide which double is better.

I quite like mitro as a pick, out of all mids and forwards six and under, he is the only one I feel I can start every week (for the time being). Soucek might be ok but such horrible fixtures, ASM? I don’t trust Newcastle tbh.
Tricky price point really, defenders are more appealing then the mids.
