Az and Mark discuss mistakes from 2019/20 in first FPL BlackBox podcast

The first episode of the relaunched FPL BlackBox podcast was beamed live on YouTube last night, with our very own Az and Mark diving straight into the self-reflection.

The pair pull no punches as they discuss their mistakes from 2019/20, be it transfer strategies that failed to pay off or early-season gambles that were – in hindsight – always doomed to flop.

The thorny issue of team value gets a mention as debate rages over whether early transfers are a good thing, especially with the potential threat of COVID-related postponements disrupting short-term plans.

Taking a longer view, Az and Mark also consider what’s been holding them back in the last few seasons and how they can improve going forward.

There’s a first look at the duo’s Fantasy Premier League drafts for the new season, with the curveball picks of Matheus Pereira (£6.0m) and Eddie Nketiah (£6.0m) raising an eyebrow.

The YouTube and podcast links are below.

About the Podcast

The FPL BlackBox podcast is part of our Scout Network.

Each week, Az and Mark will look back on their decisions to reflect on what’s going right – and what’s going wrong.

The co-hosts will be analysing the mistakes they have made throughout the season, with the hope of learning from their errors to become better Fantasy Premier League managers.

There will also be assessments of other elite managers’ performances along the way, along with the usual chat on transfers and captains.

Head over to the FPL BlackBox YouTube page to subscribe now and, while you’re at it, why not do the same with the Fantasy Football Scout channel.

Perhaps it is nothing, but Greenwood being given the No.11 shirt suggests he is in the starting XI?

Ah, the good old days when no one had a dedicated shirt number and you played exactly in the position the number related to!

I'd imagine it's more likely something to do with his birthday (01.10.01) but it's obviously just a guess.

A man who is being overlooked, until tomorrows International game.

    Harry Kane vs

    Everton - 9 goals in 10
    Southampton - 9 goals, 4 assists in 12
    Newcastle - 5 goals in 9
Man Utd - 2 goals and an assist in 12
West Ham - 9 goals and an assist in 12
    Burnley - 8 goals, 2 assists in 9
    Brighton - 4 goals in 6
    WBA - 7 goals in 7

Kane is a goalscorer, no doubt.

But will Mourinho's team feed him enough to score the goals? If Kane was at Man City, Man Utd, Liverpool or Chelsea he would get over 25 goals a season if he stayed fit. Look at his PL goalscoring record:

      14/15: 21
      15/16: 25
      16/17: 29
      17/18: 30
      18/19: 17
      19/20: 18

I accept he played fewer games in 18/19 and 19/20, but the rate is nowhere near that he was scoring at in prior years.

He is now up against arguably players of a similar calibre who play in more free-scoring teams and are priced cheaper in Martial and Werner.

Martial scored 10 in his last 19 (all comps) Granted he got a few more assists than Kane. But, Martial post lockdown is as good as Martial get IMO, Kane underachieved.

Same happened last year, same fixture, same gw. Spurs lost and didn't score. Many took hits to bring Kane in: nothing's a sure thing here.

What are you talking about? He's given Barcelona and football fans memories that will last a lifetime. He's rightly called out the President for not having a plan and just plugging holes. Do you think their transfer activity has been thought through over the last 3 seasons?

Made a lot of noise like a spoiled brat after Barca got spanked 8-2. Not happy with president not happy with manager(s)....
In the end he is staying and all he achieved is damage to his & clubs reputation.

Real men sort serious issues behind closed doors and more importanly follow their words with actions.

He scored 34 goals and provided 24 assists in 48 games. The best in Europe. I'd call that backing up his words. The club have damaged their own reputation (and Messis) with their incompetence under the current regime.

He wanted to leave. But his family doesn't want to leave Barcelona and he also doesn't want to take 'HIS' club to court. I'd say thats an admirable man.

He notified the club of his intention to leave at the beginning of the season privately and is still choosing to stay, rather than engage in a court battle with the club he loves. You are either misinformed or just plain have it in for the guy.

See there is a hot topic about the gambling discussion, but it's closed to comment.

It's an absolutely dreadful association. The conversation in the main article seems to have naturally gravitated towards individual responsibility. Easy to dismiss that, isn't it. What gets missed is the appalling impact on football as a sport that exists for and is built by the fans. As megarich and questionable companies get a foothold (now a stranglehold) they use their power to influence just about everything in the game, including what people can or can't talk about. Gambling's long association with sports does not make it an appropriate partnership. Gambling companies do not care about individual health, they do not care about communities, they do not care about football and it's connection to the community at all. All they care about is ones and zeroes shuttling back and forward and their wet dream is empty stadiums with no troublesome fans, with games on TV/online at whatever time suits their bottom line. Eventually football will exist only to meet the needs of its 'sponsors' like appaling programming that exists only to bookend advertisements. What a marvelous business decision.

Gamble if you wish but these companies are parasites with no regard for the game we love

I think he could. He is who I am most concerned about not owning from wk1. Can't shoehorn him in with my planned moves.

Newcastle United are close to signing Rogerio from Sassuolo, according to reliable journalist and transfer expert, Gianluca Di Marzio.

The 22-year-old Brazilian left-back is one step away from becoming a Newcastle player, with a deal in the region of €14m close to being done.

Dropped salah for a more balanced team.

    Ryan (button)
TAA - Tierney - Robbo (vinagre, douglas)
Auba - soucek - Armstrong (foden, pulisic)
    Dcl - werner (martial)

        Whats not to like?

With salah all that differs is

        Pulisic > salah
        Martial > fodder

I get your reasoning but Salah is arguably the best player in the game and I'm personally of the opinion that you're spreading your money around too much. Maybe your other players will compensate for it but I prefer having two heavy hitters in midfield like Salah and Sterling. You'll have to make several moves if you want to bring in another heavy hitter... so yeah... not for me but if you're happy with it go for it.

8bdont disagree with what your saying, a valid point. Wildcard is there if it does go tits up.

Salah has been in my draft from the start, but he's also in everyone else's. Fancied something a bit different

As an experiment, ask yourself which of your players could get 25 points per million over the course of the season.

I think Pulisic will do well this season, as will Martial. Ill struggle to get in either if salah is knocking around.

Yeah, I thought about bringing in one of either Mane or Auba, but I noticed just 12m player messes up the dynamic of the whole team, so I decided to go with both TAA & Robbo to kind of cover for Mane and William/Saka to cover for Auba. Fingers crossed they both start.

I would rather pay more for a subscription than be bombarded with promotions for a company that solely exists to feather the nest of Denise Coates, who took £323 million in dividends last year (that’s 8 Joelintons).

I’m a long time subscriber but I’m really disappointed FFS. I’m here to play FPL, not to gamble.

Then don't gamble? A lot of people getting their knickers in a twist about this affiliation but we're all mature enough to make our own decisions.

Well I’m not going to gamble. But someone else might. And someone else might become addicted, something that starts maybe when they get a free 10 quid bet from an article on this site.

The thing is Bet365 is associating with FFS because it sees fantasy players as a profitable market. It feels like letting the fox into the hen house.

        1. Fork handles
          • 5 Years

I get it. But I'd imagine the vast majority of people who gamble don't develop a problem. They enjoy it as a hobby and a bit of fun and remain totally in control.

I don't have an issue with it myself so just thought I'd offer an alternative opinion. I can't imagine they're going to be publishing articles with tips that they expect to lose in order to take a cut of people's losses - obviously that I would take issue with. Not doing this link with bet365 for fear of people becoming addicted is like not giving someone paracetamol for fear of people getting hooked on painkillers. It's incredibly unlikely.

This is much bigger than whether someone gambles. This is about a questionable and exploding industry whose bottom line is linked to every facet of the game gaining huge power over the game itself.

Its not as simple as that. The issue is about the expectations we have of a community that is supportive of one another. Many have spoken how fpl has helped wean them off addictive gambling. I do not expect to be bombarded with advertising or enticement to gamble when checking the season ticker. There also appears to be a question of double standards whilst saying they promote mental health awareness.

The possibility of picking a quality mid with Bruno, Pulisic, Sterling/KDB, Greenwood and JWP with Werner and Ings/ Jiminez upfront but only at loss of not picking Salah and Auba after an early wildcard?

Defence will be McCarthy, TAA, Reece James, Vinagre.
