International Football

Which FPL players are on international duty ahead of Gameweek 1?

Fantasy managers are faced with the unusual situation of an international break taking place immediately before the start of the 2020/21 Premier League season.

A week of international fixtures got underway in midweek, with many key top-flight players in action for their nations and missing out on pre-season preparations with their clubs as a consequence.

The positive news is that only those representing European countries will be away from their clubs, as UEFA tries to play catch-up with the Nations League.

The likes of Mohamed Salah (£12.0m), Sadio Mane (£12.0m), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12.0m), Son Heung-min (£9.0m) and Raul Jimenez (£8.5m) will be staying put, then, while those European players who are on international duty at least won’t have to endure an arduous trek back from further afield given that all Nations League matches will take place on the continent.

This article gives a club-by-club rundown on which assets will be away from their sides during this period, also detailing the dates in which these players will be competing for their respective countries.

    McCarthy, (4.0)
    TAA, Robbo, Doc, Vinagre, (Ferguson)
    Auba, Son, Barnes, Soucek, (Bissouma)
    Werner, Mitro, (Martial)

    0.5 ITB

How's this no salah squad? Plan to captain Auba for the first 2 anyway so maybe it's ok to go without.

The advantage of Salah + Auba is that you have choices to downgrade either for KDB and/or Bruno..but good squad nonetheless.

Not a fan. There’s so many moves you’re priced out of. Downgrade Doherty or Robbo and upgrade a mid.

Can anyone tell me where this so-called change of wording in the rules by FPL is, saying something about cash leagues being banned or something?

      12. Players (and Players on behalf of others and organisations) can establish mini-leagues in accordance with the Game Rules. The Premier League does not permit Players charging for entry to mini-leagues they have created, strongly encourages Players not to join such leagues and cannot be held responsible for their management or any loss suffered through Players’ involvement in such leagues. The Premier League reserves the right to suspend and delete Registrations of Players that charge entry to mini-leagues they have created.

Defense looks shaky, otherwise a good team. Not sure about double Saints forward.

Maybe downgrade Adams to 4.5 and spread the cash in defense.

4.5 forward, Dier/Davies, Egan looks better than Adam, Justin, Mitchell.

Liverpool play Arsenal and Chelsea in first 3. Trent will defo get Attacking returns but there is a doubt about the cs.
Digne and Tierney give you both attacking potential as well as cs with good fixtures.
TAA definitely better though attacking wise. But will see.

    ITB: 0
    Formation: 343
    GK: McCarthy, (Nyland)
Def: TAA, Vinagre, Justin, (Mitchell, Branthwaite)
Mid: Salah, Auba, Son, Ziyech, (Gordon)
    Fwd: Werner, Mitrovic, Adams

Not sure Gordon will now get the game time with all of Evertons new signings

Also tempted by Brewster if he goes out on loan as it would be a good enabler

GW1: I originally had Greenwood benched for GW1 but thinking of taking a punt on Ziyech. This would be my GW1 transfer

GW2: Maybe bring in a Burnley defender

Can't believe Messi refused to come. I had my 14M MID spot waiting for him
    🙁

Kinda relieved though, playing my second season and I want to test out and improve my captaincy skills, set-and-forget wouldn't work with that.

To make this post of relevance, why are people employing the WC2 strategy? Seems like insanity to me, you have 1 week to judge players, you run the risk of transfers occuring for your players during GW3, GW4, and you're throwing away the most powerful chip in the game which could prove extremely vital in case of another outbreak. Not like Manchester players are particularly difficult to get anyways, nor do they have easy fixtures like after the lockdown. Auba -> KDB, bench a United player, transfer another in for your placeholder and you'll have the assets you want so badly.

Are majority following that strategy? I thought those who are using BB in GW1/2 are using WC to reallocate the cash and get Manchester assets before price changes.

Because planning for it in later stage is a pain, especially when all it does is produce 10-15 extra points.

      It's a bad idea.

They are not thinking clearly because we have never opened with bgw before (at least not since I started playing) and they dont know what to do with it.

In my only top 10k season I got off to a decent start and played wc around gw 8. Since then I have been more aggressive and played my wildcard early and it has always hurt me. It can work of course but it hasn't for me and I dont think that's just bad luck (luck comes into it).

I believe information is key to the first wildcard, probably more this season than any other. The most aggressive I would be comfortable with is gw 4. Should probably wait for transfer window to shut as the landscape could change significantly with transfer window open till October.

Having said that if I get off to a bad start and I have no mancs in my team. The shiny wildcard button will glow ever brighter, taunting me into another mistake.

      Gotta love this game

Agree. A lot of "How do we get in Manchester assets" and less "Should we get in Manchester assets?". Of course both are great but United have a run of Everton-Chelsea-Spurs-Arsenal in the first 7, trying to jump on triple or even double attack seems premature

Their are doubts over his minutes, will have to see again as we move close to deadline.

Bissouma is likely to play all games.

Other then that, I think its well balanced and planned transfers are Greenwood in for Alli potentially depending on performance, Aubameyang out for KDB and Adams out for Wood/DCL

Got like 19 or 22 points in a game last season lol... I think after Vardy he's a good buy (I'd go for him over Maddison, Barnes gets forward a lot more)

      He's cheap.
At a price point people can't find anyone else. To accomodate Werner & Ings/Jimenez you need a cheap Midfielder.

Basically it's a compromise. He can be a good asset though.

      I'm in for Vardy !

Why not? If you only ever consider the template players everybody else gets, it's a pretty dull way to play the game and unlikely to get you very far. Barnes is a good pick, at a good price, with good fixtures. 16 goal involvements in 2000 minutes and he "underperformed". New season, change of formation to a back 4 again should see him starting, and he takes up very advanced positions, gets in the box, shoots, is underrated for creativity (more assists than Maddison over the past two seasons in far less minutes). Oh and he's even explosive, with a 19-pointer last season demonstrating that on his day the big haul is possible. For 7m.

        Agree with almost most part.
        "Underperformed" is a bad argument though. He's a sh.t finisher !
        No second ways to that.

I remember a game last season when Vardy created Freaking 3 big chances for him and he still missed.

I love Vardy though. In my team for starting fixtures

That's fair, but what I mean is that if the term can be used for others it can also be used for him. More to the point, he did not "over perform", so his rate of returns doesn't appear to be unsustainable like a Greenwood or Armstrong (his over performance based on underlying stats was massive!). His output doesn't appear to be a trap, in other words. I would expect to live up to his price tag or better.

People will also sorts of reasons to hate on a player that's outside the mainstream thinking, but Barnes is one of the standouts in his price bracket in terms of upside.

Tough season, 170k in the end. It was one of those where all the 50-50s you can't control just don't work out (Aguero captain for the 8-0 when everyone got the Sterling blank to KDB (VC) for 34 points; Mane (TC) fail; took a -12 hit (and got a green arrow) to prepare for the Blank GW that was then scrapped; didn't have a 2nd Wildcard to fall back on post restart; and on and on really).

Mistakes were made, bad luck was had, and to me there will always be an asterisk next to last season. But plenty to learn from as well. Looking forward to the new season big time!

Haha, I accept that. Not sure that 42k, 25k, 290, and 170k makes for a poor record personally. Nor does it mean one can't offer strong opinions on the strategic side of the game. There's only so much you can actually control in terms of results, I'm more concerned about the decision-making process.

It amuses that "upside chasing" is now all the rage, given it's almost exactly the strategy I was using and proposing during that season. Didn't have the fancy name though.

Oh absolutely - I wasn’t having a go! I’m kind of raising an eyebrow at upside chasing as well - it’s been around for donkeys years, but it’s not for the faint hearted & I wouldn’t put myself through it personally

Selling Sterling who has spurs away for Auba who has West Brom home, Sterling braces, Auba blanks... Selling Mané who has Leicester away for KDB who has Villa home... Mané braces, KDB blanks etc, etc

That’s the way the FPL Gods work sometimes 🙂

All good mate. Yeah it's not so much that I disagree with upside chasing, because it's very close to how I play the game, but I find it odd how it's being treated as some kind of revolutionary strategy. I literally wrote two community articles about it here in 18/19. Still, as a content creator and marketer myself, I am impressed with the branding in general.

Yeah, to me this is why the season has a large asterisk next to it. Even the usual variance was blown wide open but so many unprecedented factors. It wasn't the game as we know it, and depending how and when you played certain chips etc or started planning for blank and double gameweeks that never eventuated, in the end a few hundred points either way could be put down to an abnormally high element of pure chance.

We didn't have great seasons, but of all the seasons to get punished I can live with it being that one. It was frankly quite weird.

I feel your pain, the true list of everything that went wrong for me is hilarious/devastating, and if you finished 1 million I can only imagine your list is even more impressive! Onwards and upwards.

I’m almost tempted to give him a crack of the whip for the first 5 GW’s

He’s a player that always looked high potential in the FPL sense on the eye test - noticeably greedy & not an obvious team player for the most part

I think that actually started to hurt Vardy a bit towards the end of the season, as a Vardy owner I distinctly remember several occasions where Vardy had tap ins if Barnes had passed instead of shot... and a couple of times he wasted cast iron Vardy assists... Rodgers is bound to have been pointing this out in video analysis behind the scenes surely

But he is young & does looks one of those hungry for goals type players & is quick & strong & still a fair bit of improving to do at his age

Thinks nothing of going 5-6 games without returns either mind you - but that’s the bracket you’re shopping in at 7.0

I much prefer a player like Barnes where the potential for goal involvement is high (even though poor finishing or vision might lead to frustration at times) over a steady type of player on set pieces etc. At least with Barnes when you get him on a hot streak you've got a great differential, that's my type of player in the price bracket. But I did have him for the 19-pointer, so probably biased. 3.7 points per match despite the poor run post restart with lots of cameos - better than the likes of DCL and Maupay, and equal to Mount.

I had Barnes last season too. His 19-pointer was the last Monday night football before the lockdown. Then I got attached to him emotionally and saved him after the restart only to get 59th min or so...
We need to see if he can find a starting spot imo.
In that bracket I am looking at Hudson-Odoi for the first few gw’s.

Had a good season at 21yo, now with a full season under his belt playing as a regular starter with confidence from his manager, he could be great at 7.0. Great stats too, gets forward a lot. Finishing is a problem but that will be better this season, development is quick at that age.

Actually not decided on Ryan vs McCarthy. At one point i had KWP over Jusin and therefore Ryan has stayed between the post. Anything that suggests Soton will be good defensively? I think McCarthy is a bettergoalkeeper but not sure on which team is better. Still also thinking we should have two playing goalkeepers for possible quaranteen protocol surprise posponements.

One of the reasons Sheffield Utd did well defensively was Henderson. Not sure Ramsdale is even a good goalkeeper, i'd just go two 4.5 if i was you. Alli is a nice punt, bench?

Bournemouth player of the season ... not quite as good as Henderson maybe, but OK.

Im seeing a sudden amount of teams with Alli over Son, surprised by this, any reason?

People think Son is going to be pushed wide

Alli will play in the hole in place of La Celso and he has created the maximum big chances since the project restart ahead of the likes of Kevin Debruyne , Salah and he is one ofn Mourinho Favourites

Also seldom mentioned, not loads between them stat wise when both starting - son still on top however and perhaps worth the extra 1m

If I knew that Alli was 100% nailed (as some believe) then I’d have him - but not sure if mou will start with lo celso instead

Fiddling the attacking set up . What would you go for?

    A)
    KDB Mane Alli Saka (Stephens)
    Martial Werner (Brewster)

    B) Mane/KDB Alli Greenwood/Barnes
    Werner Martial Jimenez

    Thank you!

Would be nice with some more feedback.

It is basically a 442 or 433, with KDB and Saka versus Jimenez and Greenwood

      What would you do?

Don’t know what to make of Man City’s fixture run GW2-GW9

5 away (wol, lee, whm, shu, tot)
    3 home (LEI, ARS, LIV)

There isn’t a single game there they can’t win, but does it look ripe for 3 & 4 goal wins? Champs league before GW6, 7, 9 too

Whereas GW10 onwards sees BUR, FUL, WBA, NEW in a 6 game stretch, closely followed by BHA, CPL, wba, SHU in a 4 game block

Hence my GW10 WC plan, Liverpool have a similar fixture swing then too. KDB the main asset that I like for this run, most fixure proof player in the game. Don't see the point in any others unless I see that Aguero is likely to start Leicester, West Ham, Leeds so I can slap the (C) on him and enjoy my 30 points.

Aguero is definitely someone who’s started to shuffle forwards in my thoughts over the last few days

Leaning towards starting with Vardy & Werner so the team can handle Aguero’s 10.5 with less surgery

When he’s fit he just shouldn’t be that cheap - it’s a silly price & one we probably should try to at least be *ready* to take advantage of if & when he does return

They can beat any team 6-0 so I wouldn’t worry about the fixtures with them

I don't really bother looking at fixtures for Man City and Liverpool.

Yeah it doesn't look good does it. With so many premium mids and fwds this year I think you could probably get away with no city up to GW10 but one of KDB / Sterling is probably the right balance I'd say

I Would definitely look at some of those fixtures as a problem. Not going to double or triple up on them till GW10. Will get KDB for sure though

Has anyone found a good 3 way rotation for 4.5 defenders? Play 2 bench 1 each week

Vinagre, KWP, Lamptey/Veltman should be a good one.
