Scout Reports

How will Donny van de Beek fit into the United midfield and what is his FPL appeal?

One of the biggest deals of the summer transfer window so far saw Donny van de Beek move from Ajax to Manchester United for a reported £35m fee plus add-ons.

The versatile midfielder, 23, signed a five-year contract and could be poised to make his debut in Gameweek 2, when Crystal Palace visit Old Trafford.

Priced up at £7.0m by Fantasy Premier League, the fact he’s cheaper than all of United’s current first-choice attacking players makes him interesting, but what exactly will van de Beek bring to the Red Devils and where does he fit in?

In this new Scout Report, we’ll attempt to answer those questions, and assess his credentials ahead of the new campaign.

History and Statistics

“Dennis [Bergkamp] started talking enthusiastically about a talent in his youth team. It was a boy who reminded Dennis of himself at that age. That was the signal for me to keep an eye on that guy. That was Donny.”
Frank de Boer, Ajax manager 2010-2016

Dutch midfielder van de Beek may only be 23 years old but he arrives at Old Trafford with a wealth of experience playing at the top level.

A product of the famed Ajax academy, van de Beek made his debut back in 2015 during a Europa League match against Celtic, before establishing himself the following season, when he made 29 first-team appearances in all competitions.

A senior international debut followed in 2017, while a further 35 matches aided his development.

However, it was the 2018/19 campaign when van de Beek truly announced himself on the European stage, as a young and exciting Ajax side reached the Champions League semi-finals beating Real Madrid and Juventus on the way.

The Dutchman was a key member of the team, along with the likes of Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong, and despite falling short, caught the imagination of football fans around the world.

“Van de Beek. Nobody talks much about him, but he has a dynamic in the game, he gets behind Tadic, he arrives, he works, he scores goals. Logically, I love De Jong and De Ligt. But the example of the operation of this Ajax is Van de Beek.” – Mauricio Pochettino, speaking ahead of Tottenham’s Champions League semi-final second-leg against Ajax in 2019

More success followed domestically, as Ajax won the Eredivisie and KNVB Cup, while van de Beek’s performances were rewarded with a place on the 30-man shortlist for the Ballon d’Or, and a spot in the Netherlands squad that reached the 2019 Nations League final.

How does this approach look, providing everyone is fit:

    4.5 - 4.0
    Digne - Vinagre - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.0
    Auba - Fernandes - Ziyech - Bowen - 4.5
    Werner - Ayew - Adams

    Bowen to KdB immediately.
Planning to run with three premium mids until I see who is leading the City line more often, or if Mahrez is getting decent game time. Ta!

I like it. The most important question is whether you like it, I mean truly like it. Those punts start off slow, you’re faced with red arrows and (some of) the template players have started well...

Do you hold your nerve or get trigger happy with hits and/or a WC?

He’s not a nostalgia pick. Son when Kane plays stays wide. Means his attacking returns will be inconsistent. Alli plays more behind Kane. When Kane drops deep it’s Alli who overlaps him meaning he is an increased chance of scoring. Son overperforms his stats all the time whereas alli is on point with his

If he “over performs his stats all the time” do they not just become his stats?

If you want Alli I’m not gonna stop you but Son is clearly a better option based on the last 2 season’s performances. Alli is anything but consistent.

Given Henderson injury and Wijnaldum rumoured departure, he probably starts GW1.

Good team on paper. Have a think about going without one of the premium forwards as if they bang you will have to waste two transfers to go up to them. Antonio probably a transfer waiting to happen really. Great shout for gameweek 1 but very bad fixtures after that. What’s your plan for United and city assets. Just because they will rise in price very quickly

Ye Antonio may not survive, but hes got a lovely GW1, then perhaps I could transfer for Mitro in GW2 who has nice GW2 and 3 fixtures. (Leeds AVL). I may drop auba for KdB in GW3, and look at UTD from 4.

    Rate my team...any feedback?

    Mccarthy(martin)
    Justin,Davies,TAA,Vinagre,Justin
    Ziyech,Son,Auba,Salah,Armstrong
    Werner(Davis,Brewester)

Decided to do something different....will change son to bruno in gw2 and auba to kdb in gw3. My thinking here is that I believe that this season points will lie heavily in the midfield. It does mean I have a weak bench but i dont really care that much because I believe the players I have will definitely start.thoughts??

Shouldn’t we all have two playing keepers then? I’ve seen people posting about this but also planning to play one 4.5 keeper

I normally rotate 2 but the upside of a keeper starting is a low ceiling so I wouldn’t be too upset if McCarthy wasn’t playing.

I guess we can’t predict uncertainty but I’m just not a fan of your striker slots

Some poster was losing his mind earlier when many said Mane was a better player than Salah. I think Mane more likely for bonus better finisher. But Salah's body language has been all wrong - after restart and preseason lazy shoulders slumped.

Personally no lfc at all for me, But I would pick Mane if I was going Liverpool.

Yeah Salah is the fear pick as we all know when he turns it on he’s the highest points ceiling in the league. Salah at home, mane away is a good rule where possible. Penalties makes a big difference too

I’m still new but surely it isn’t this simple, there’s always the question of whether the alternative (4.5) can cover some/all of the points ?

4.5 striker gives you zero returns likely this year but a 4.5 def might score 70% of the points your 6m would and play most weeks

Would mean playing 4/4/2, personally think they’ll be at least 1 good option at 6-6.5 emerge hopefully so having mitro will let you get to them and keep 2 higher priced forwards as well, Werner and ings for me

I should have clarified in my question, if 6mil striker then bench fodder defender / if 6mil striker bench fodder striker.

That 70% would definitely help a few weeks but assuming you're directly comparing the 6mil budget striker to the budget defender

Hi again FPL mates want your opinion in 2 different things:

    B)Jamie Vardy

Would like to hear you and discuss:

    1. SouthCoastSaint
      • 12 Years
      3 years, 6 months ago

      A) Robbo, Trent and VVD all capable of attacking returns if they concede if you’re doubling up. Don’t get the Gomez picks

      B) stumped as to why so few have vardy. Maddison makes a difference if he’s not fit but he’s in my team at the moment and can easily move to martial week 2 if he flops

Is it worth to spent this amount of money to double up Liverpool Def? Because there is also Doherty, a great pick playing for a great defensive team.

Aurier is still at spurs and their fixture list is congested. Could easily be rotation which makes me want dier and 1.0 elsewhere

Everyone is frustrated with Aurier on spurs. Mou even tried to play Gedsin Fernandes at RB in recent friendlies before the international break. I'm sure Doherty will clinch his spot as Mou doesn't likes to rotate specially now that Spurs play in UEL

    2. Wrong Captain Choice - Ag i…

      a) not until gw4
      b) If you cannot afford Kane would get Vardy Leicester need goals - to win games - backline in bits

      1. Shark Team
        • 6 Years
        3 years, 6 months ago

I think they will surely get an Anfield cs whether it's in the gw 1 or versus Arsenal (or both!)
I also think that Vardy is a better option than Kane because he is the only target man of Leicester while Son Alli can also score some goals for Spurs and I don't think that at least in the first 5-6 gws Spurs will score many many more goals than Leicester.

Well I have gone no liverpool at all and treble spurs,
Leicester look kinda iffy. I wouldnt be surprised if they got dragged in a relegation fight - concede a lot of goals. Justin is in my team purely on fixtures and I do not see an alternative.

      A) I expect Liverpool to again not start with a lot of cleansheets then improve over the course of the seas on as last time as they find consistency and playing regularly. I would start with 1 defender Max then see how they progress before thinking about investing in another.

      B) Always been a decent option, every season he finds a run of 7-10 games where he scores regular then fizzles off a bit as compared to other strikers. Key is when to buy and when to sell, usually coincides with good fixtures.

      1. SouthCoastSaint
        • 12 Years

Mad how consistent he has been last 4 seasons then compare his ownership to the unproven Werner

I guess there is excitement about a new signing. If you look at the support behind the striker, you'd say Timo has players with more flair perhaps behind him to finish as compared to Vardy. But then again the Leicester setup is consistent and you know what you're getting.

I guess it's about how you see the game, Timo probably the more exciting option, Vardy the mature option maybe.

I understand how Timo is unproven in premier league but I'm getting strong vibes, I'm in love myself lol. A German hard working striker is a big deal lol

A more top heavy team which understandably hits on your midfield. It's your choice totally fine. Only thing I'd say is it's gameweek 1 and id rather make a transfer or two to get players from city united in rather than have 7-8 mil on my bench. That's just my thinking

              Currently myself on this

              McCarthy 4.0
              Taa kwp vinagre Justin 4.0
              Salah Son auba soucek 4.5
              Werner Ings mitro

Feel free to shoot holes but it's a template here for now it seems lol. I know Justin and soucek main areas of concern but I'm focused on first gameweek for now and expect them to start

I’m waiting and seeing for Liverpool clean sheets, TAA is obviously straight in, but I’m going for an early Salah and Mané double up so watching for Robbo/VVD. I think any other Liverpool player is probably a waste of a slot.

Vardy’s problem appears to be that he’s 0.5 less than Kane and 0.5 more than Werner. Most people can argue themselves into finding the 0.5 or losing the 0.5. Think he’s a great option and with great fixtures.

Problem with Werner is that he’s an immediate price fall if he blanks vs Brighton as people will move him on for Aguero/ Jesus/ martial. Vardy has the protection of a good home fixture even if he blanks

    Allison // DDG

Happy to do Salah > Bruno GW2 given fixtures and Auba > KDB when the time comes…

Also can do Son > Greenwood if needs be

Like the Barnes pick, hope he starts most games he’s very selfish which is great for FPL

Yeh if he gets good minutes he could do very well.

Been stuck between Adams or Mitro for a while, as a saints fan, any insight as to how Adams might do?

Was fantastic post lockdown. Struggled with confidence early on. May be dropped for Long in tougher away games. Huge potential. Very strong and has a great finish on him. That said, I think I’ll be going Mitro due to talisman status and pens

            Thanks mate, insightful.

Speaks volumes that you still looking to go with Mitro, think it might be the safe bet, after Arsenal, Fulham have a nice run of fixtures

The 5.5 of choice...until he blanks for a few and someone else scores.

Talismanic in a poor team. See also Mitrovic and Grealish

    Liking this for now?

    McCarthy
    Trent, Doherty, Vinagre, Mitchell
    Auba C, Salah, Saka, Son
    Vardy, Mitro

    Nyland, Stephens, Brewster/Davis, C Taylor

    1.5 bank for upgades.

      How nailed is Mitchell?

Prefer Werner to Vardy as well, although not much in it

Looks fine in pre season played most of the games - more of a concern is Wolves moves in transfer market for Vinagre. But plenty of 4.5s to choose from?

Yeh this new signing might throw a spanner in the works for Vinagre unfortunately, tempted to switch him to KWP as I think ill be opting for Ramsdale over McCarthy as a route into the SHU def.
