Scout Reports

How will Donny van de Beek fit into the United midfield and what is his FPL appeal?

One of the biggest deals of the summer transfer window so far saw Donny van de Beek move from Ajax to Manchester United for a reported £35m fee plus add-ons.

The versatile midfielder, 23, signed a five-year contract and could be poised to make his debut in Gameweek 2, when Crystal Palace visit Old Trafford.

Priced up at £7.0m by Fantasy Premier League, the fact he’s cheaper than all of United’s current first-choice attacking players makes him interesting, but what exactly will van de Beek bring to the Red Devils and where does he fit in?

In this new Scout Report, we’ll attempt to answer those questions, and assess his credentials ahead of the new campaign.

History and Statistics

“Dennis [Bergkamp] started talking enthusiastically about a talent in his youth team. It was a boy who reminded Dennis of himself at that age. That was the signal for me to keep an eye on that guy. That was Donny.”
Frank de Boer, Ajax manager 2010-2016

Dutch midfielder van de Beek may only be 23 years old but he arrives at Old Trafford with a wealth of experience playing at the top level.

A product of the famed Ajax academy, van de Beek made his debut back in 2015 during a Europa League match against Celtic, before establishing himself the following season, when he made 29 first-team appearances in all competitions.

A senior international debut followed in 2017, while a further 35 matches aided his development.

However, it was the 2018/19 campaign when van de Beek truly announced himself on the European stage, as a young and exciting Ajax side reached the Champions League semi-finals beating Real Madrid and Juventus on the way.

The Dutchman was a key member of the team, along with the likes of Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong, and despite falling short, caught the imagination of football fans around the world.

“Van de Beek. Nobody talks much about him, but he has a dynamic in the game, he gets behind Tadic, he arrives, he works, he scores goals. Logically, I love De Jong and De Ligt. But the example of the operation of this Ajax is Van de Beek.” – Mauricio Pochettino, speaking ahead of Tottenham’s Champions League semi-final second-leg against Ajax in 2019

More success followed domestically, as Ajax won the Eredivisie and KNVB Cup, while van de Beek’s performances were rewarded with a place on the 30-man shortlist for the Ballon d’Or, and a spot in the Netherlands squad that reached the 2019 Nations League final.

Why are so many going for the Southampton goalie? Last time I checked they let in 60 goals last season. What am I missing?

Context. Look at how many we conceded after the Leicester debacle. Look at our away performances. Look at how we’ve played since lockdown. He’s the best of the best 4.5 playing keepers. Doesn’t get tonnes of save points but will get some clean sheets with relatively kind fixtures

Riding and dying with Mat Ryan in net this season. Points return for price in recent seasons is top notch though, and you have to think the Brighton defense will be improved.

Mitro nailed, after GW1 Fulham have a nice run of fixtures.

On pens/talisman, performed well last time in the prem

Alli can become Son, Armstrong could become someone like barnes, lots of options.

Decent plan. You think Ings will be so easy to drop?

I was considering starting with Martial benched in a strong 3 up top (Werner, Ings, Martial) just with a weaker defence (TAA, 5.0, 4.5, 4.5, 4.0)

It could def work. But it is also more risky if those fullbacks don’t deliver the attacking returns you expect. Higher chance of getting the points from the equivalent mids and having value defence I think but may be wrong

There's a bit too much meh in attack for me, but like the defence. Look at taking Vinegre as your final defender though. He covers for poor fixtures for Ars and Spurs nicely in GW3 4 5 and 7

For comparison, my draft du jour is
        McCarthy, gimp
        TAA, Robbo, Dier, Gabriel, Vin
        Auba*, Havertz**, Alli, Gimp, gimp
        Firmino***, Werner, Adams

        * becomes KDB
        ** assume 8.5

I think I'm more confident backing KDB early on with those tougher fixtures where he's been found to play higher up the pitch. I think somewhere like GW13-20 is where I will look to Sterling

Love to have both Sterling and KDB and currently not really interested with Bruno.

If I want MUN, i'll pick Martial first and then Greenwood. Triple up with Rashford if he's on fire or AWB when they're showing a good def

By removing Salah, you'll have a stronger back and front. He's out of form anyway and first three not an easy game to score for LIV. I'll take a chance with double LIV def

I'll drop him for Robbo and reinforce GK with Lloris, have backup fund to replace Vinagre when he's not nailed

Mitro Adams I think is poor combo, if you want 3 strikers, Ings Ayew should be better, but I suggest 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 with WernIngs the obvious pick.

Only my 3rd draft since the game opened. Trying to pace myself 😉

What do you think of this option that brings in Martial from the start?

    McCarthy
    TAA, Dier/ Egan, Justin, Mitchell
    Salah, Auba, ASM, Soucek
    Werner, Ings
    (Steer) (Martial, Taylor, Bissouma)

Alternative is to do something like Warby above

I would personally go easier up top and improve Mitch/Justin.. How about Ings to Adams to free up 2.5m?

Hmmm but I love my Ings pick!

If I do downgrade him, it would be Mitro and I guess I’d do this to have a more nailed team:

        McCarthy
        TAA, Doherty, Saiss, Lascelles
        Salah, Auba, JWP, Soucek
        Werner, Mitro
        (Steer) (Martial, Taylor, Bissouma)

That’s great, if you are really worried about Ings, just put him in for Martial and make the move GW2..

What are your thoughts on Reece James??

I do kinda like my alternative above now!

Only reservation with your suggestion to have Ings as a placeholder for Martial is what if Ingsy explodes in GW1? Makes the move much harder then!

Don't bring Martial in now but consider for FT or taking a hit in GW2. You'll want a guarantee that he's fit to play comes GW2 otherwise you're wasting 9M

Get Son in as he's in form and I'm betting he's gonna have a goal/assist so it could be a 10+ pt swing for you

Everyone seems to be going for Werner (myself included). Is anyone worried that he may share game time with Abraham and Giroud?

Giroud was playing brilliantly at the end of last season and Lampard loves Abraham. I expect Werner to start but I can still see Lampard wanting to give Giroud and Abraham plenty of game time so it could be that Werner plays 60 odd minutes a lot of weeks. Also Werner hasn’t had much of a preseason at Chelsea and is away with Germany now for a week so could potentially start on the bench against Brighton next week.

Debating switching him to Kane who we can be sure will always play 90 minutes no matter how bad he’s playing.

But isn’t that worrying enough as it is, the fact that you may be spending £9.5m on a striker, who is new to the league, and may be shifted out to the left?

Tammy is a good talent but he needs more experience to gain the starting spot. Last season, he's wasting lots of chances so perhaps now he'll play more in the cup and sub for Werner.

Giroud, is an experienced player and always handy in the last 20 minutes of each game so I think Werner is very safe and probably subbed off around 70-80 min when Chelsea needs Giroud's magic to flip a game

Objective is to balance a rise in team value while getting the most points.
    What do you think?

    GK: McCarthy
    DEF: Alexander-Arnold, Doherty, Robertson
    MID: Foden, Ward-Prowse, Barnes, Greenwood
    FWD: Werner, Vardy, Kane
BENCH: Ryan, Walker-Peters, Vinagre, C. Jones

Done a different draft of squad- going bigger at back. Interested in views on this ? ( Soucek to 4.5 if out week 1 and Ziyech to Alli if not fit )- Got Bruno week 2. No Salah but He is not looking too great and would not be captaining first few weeks anyway.

    Patricio
    TAA Doherty Robertson KWP
    Aubameyang(C) Ziyech Armstrong Soucek
    Werner Mitrovic

    Button Lamptey Brewster Bruno

    McCarthy (Nyland)
    Justin TAA KWP (Kenny, Ferguson)
    Salah Auba Son Berge (Burke)
    Ings Werner Rodrigo

Think I'm getting pretty close to the team I'll run with, but guess Berge & Rodrigo as starters most weeks make this too punty. Any ideas?

    1. -RAKEY-

I wouldn't be too confident in Rodrigo to start at least for a few GWs. Bielsa love to make sure his players know the system inside and out. Kenny could be good, but wouldn't be confident of starts. Ferguson is injured, Burke is out of favour. Would I'd swap your bench players for other options personally, and Rodrigo with Bamford/Mitrovic.

      1. ZTF
        • 9 Years

Cheers. I’m undecided on Rodrigo - his underlying data isn’t great but with the price paid I’d expect him to start and with the volume of chances Leeds create, I’d expect him to score a few.

On the others you mentioned - Ferguson over Mitchell is because I think he stays in the side longer and I only really want palace defence from gw5 onwards. Burke is with the hope that his supposed transfer to Sheff U going through. Very low risk pick anyway

    Quick RMT:
Finally settled on this I think.
Current plans are the obivous Aubameyang -> De Bruyne for GW3. Also, thinking Vardy -> Werner at the same time, depending on how first 2 GWs play out. Happy with the 3 way rotation of Vinagre/KWP/Lindelof, playing 2 every weeks gives me some very friendly fixtures. What guys do you think?

    Ramsdale - Peacock-Farrell
    Alexander-Arnold - Doherty - Vinagre - Walker-Peters - Lindelof
    Salah - Aubameyang - Son - Armstrong - Bissouma
    Vardy - Mitrovic - Brewster
