Scout Reports

How will Donny van de Beek fit into the United midfield and what is his FPL appeal?

One of the biggest deals of the summer transfer window so far saw Donny van de Beek move from Ajax to Manchester United for a reported £35m fee plus add-ons.

The versatile midfielder, 23, signed a five-year contract and could be poised to make his debut in Gameweek 2, when Crystal Palace visit Old Trafford.

Priced up at £7.0m by Fantasy Premier League, the fact he’s cheaper than all of United’s current first-choice attacking players makes him interesting, but what exactly will van de Beek bring to the Red Devils and where does he fit in?

In this new Scout Report, we’ll attempt to answer those questions, and assess his credentials ahead of the new campaign.

History and Statistics

“Dennis [Bergkamp] started talking enthusiastically about a talent in his youth team. It was a boy who reminded Dennis of himself at that age. That was the signal for me to keep an eye on that guy. That was Donny.”
Frank de Boer, Ajax manager 2010-2016

Dutch midfielder van de Beek may only be 23 years old but he arrives at Old Trafford with a wealth of experience playing at the top level.

A product of the famed Ajax academy, van de Beek made his debut back in 2015 during a Europa League match against Celtic, before establishing himself the following season, when he made 29 first-team appearances in all competitions.

A senior international debut followed in 2017, while a further 35 matches aided his development.

However, it was the 2018/19 campaign when van de Beek truly announced himself on the European stage, as a young and exciting Ajax side reached the Champions League semi-finals beating Real Madrid and Juventus on the way.

The Dutchman was a key member of the team, along with the likes of Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong, and despite falling short, caught the imagination of football fans around the world.

“Van de Beek. Nobody talks much about him, but he has a dynamic in the game, he gets behind Tadic, he arrives, he works, he scores goals. Logically, I love De Jong and De Ligt. But the example of the operation of this Ajax is Van de Beek.” – Mauricio Pochettino, speaking ahead of Tottenham’s Champions League semi-final second-leg against Ajax in 2019

More success followed domestically, as Ajax won the Eredivisie and KNVB Cup, while van de Beek’s performances were rewarded with a place on the 30-man shortlist for the Ballon d’Or, and a spot in the Netherlands squad that reached the 2019 Nations League final.

I like B but think you may have to switch Taylor to a 4.5 defender who’s playing in GW1 unless your certain Mitchell starts.

Only issue I'd have with B is it's hard to upgrade an under performing 6m striker particularly if their price drops. Leaves you a bit limited unless you're planning an early wildcard.

Quite like the idea of benching a United or Burnley defender in gw1 then benching Soucek for tough fixtures.

I suppose Ings could be Werner if he really wanted Chelsea coverage but either Ings/Werner or Martial are good in that spot.
Personally Son > Pulisic in gw 3 looks good for this team.

    McCarthy (Button)
TAA / Robbo / Tierney / Dier (Mitchell)
Auba / Son / Soucek / Pereira (Bruno)
    Werner / Mitro (Davis)

I don’t want to change my structure, so if Soucek is confirmed as missing GW1, should I...

    A) Change him for another 5mil mid and use an FT to get him back in.

    B) Roll with it...?

I’ve looked at all of that, but I want Soucek as my bench player so I can switch to a 3-5-2 at certain times.

He’s the perfect fit for my team and the way I want to play, so going that route is not ideal.

It's true it's tough, but conversely the damage of having the wrong big hitter should be lessened as they can't all be heavily owned. And by virtue of being big hitters, it's likely than multiple will haul in any one week.

Pick your faves, be patient, and enjoy!

Wondering if Pereira is worth finding .5 for over Armstrong... probably, but I'll have to see them sign better strikers than Austin and Robson-Kanu, nostalgic as they are. Tailsman for an offensive WBA team under Bilic, who I remember did very well with Payet at West Ham. First 9 fixtures are decent too, they could do a Norwich before falling apart. Though apparently their form fell off towards the end of 19/20 so maybe that's a worry?

    1. The Wanton Trader
      • 6 Years

The way I’m looking at it is, if it doesn’t work out I’ll just swap him for an Armstrong, ASM or the like, if they’re performing better.
As you say though, he is their main man with some good early fixtures and the teams that are starting with likes of the aforementioned, will find it harder to bring Pereira in.

I just don't find any value in west brom's attacks, average strikers while yesterday they played really bad in the friendly. However, their defence is pretty solid so a lot of teams' matches against them having a difficulty of 2 would be quite dangerous.

I think he has the potential to explode still, he spent all match spamming good through balls and shots. Two players hit the post after one of his passes, before the sideways lay off and worldy from csncelo

I've seen Saka's name starting to pop up a little. Interestingly, he's in a much higher price bracket in the very similar Fan Team game than he is in the FPL (22 pricier midfielders in the former game compared to 70 in the latter). So the question is basically this, is he possibly underpriced on FPL? If so he'd be a gem at 5.5m because after all who really wants ASM in their team? I've never considered him myself but I'm definitely no FF expert.

I'm sure if he was nailed, he would be part of template but unfortunately he probably won't be nailed as long as Willian, Pepe, Lacazette, Nkeitiah exist.

Wingback is an option but Tierney...

I’m on ASM for that troublesome 5.5m mid spot and I don’t like it. I don’t like any of the options at that price so will either find a way to upgrade or downgrade to a 4.5m and get a decent defender.

If there’s only a few target the strikers. Less premium players there.

        Morning,

I know there hasn't been much talk of city players due to the blank and fixtures. If there has been any talk its been about Auba to raz or kdb. But the been no mention of Mahrez. Arguably if he gets some kind of regular minutes could be dynamite.

        Any mahrez love?

Just pick a 4.5 that is not highly owned so that when people move away from Brewster, you don’t get stuck with a 4.4. Also Brewster takes up a Liverpool slot so I wouldn’t go there

I want an Everton player in my team badly, that fixture run and these great signings - on paper - look very appealing. Holgate at 5M would have been excellent but is now injured, DCL at 7M is great but already rocking 3 premium forwards. Hopefully Rodriguez, by a miracle, comes priced at 7.5M so I can downgrade Ziyech and upgrade Armstrong!

Their squads pricing just isn’t appealing. If Gordon was a bonafide starter he would be my fifth midfielder.
          Doc > digne
Mitro > DCL at 1m cheaper
Richalison could be left wing again And should of had a price drop

I love their fixtures and think they’ll surprise but can’t see the options yet

Just watched the Liverpool highlights, I don't think they will stick with this formation but if they do Minamino will benefit more than anyone. Salah didn't play well but could have easily had 2 assists and was whiskers away from a couple of tap ins so not too worried yet about his performance, more about the formation and how it would work vs a premier League team

I wouldn't be surprised if Mount did start the first match and Havertz slowly eased in. If we knew a) how much Havertz cost and b) whether he starts GW1 then that would very helpful ..... but I don't think Frank will be so accommodating as to tell us about the latter.

100% blinded, just becasue you spend 70+ mill on a player in pre season with a week to go before the 1st match, doesnt mean hes going to be in the starting line up ASAP.

Ser Davos made a great point yesterday about Giroud and Abraham, theyre going to get game time too. Plus Werner could be deployed out wide and having 1 of the other strikers go up top.
Its a great team, dont get me wrong i think we all know the starting 11, but theres bound to be at least some rotation

Pretty much, keeps them fresh, makes them fight for a place. More i think about that the more i think i may need a good sub and not just rely on Soucek. maybe even 2

He will be my pick if I have another spot for 4.5. Start at left back or sometines even as a left winger. High risk than Ayling but high reward

How much is Ryan Fraser expected to be, 6 or 6.5m? Newcastle could be fun to watch with him, Saint-Maximum and Joelinton up front.

ASM moves to the right? Fraser on the left and Almiron central behind a striker.

                      No love for Kane?

Post restart, Kane have 7 goals only Antonio and Sterling have more 8 and 9.

Thats sustainable because he have 9 big chances. The other two attackers have more. Ings at fourth only have 6 big chances.

Look at the fixtures guys. Kane in my team. Son and Alli stats was poor.

I have had Kane in my team since the game relaunched. I think most are ignoring because of structure and future transfer moves in GW2/3 (City and United)

For City spot, Kane can be Aguero. Aguero stat per 90 mins is amazing

Nailed on in my team for the first 9, those fixtures are fantastic and I wouldn't be surprised to see him with 10 goals in 10- matches. Mourinho always starts well in his second season and there should be a few thrashings to be handed out, I expect Kane to benefit now that he's playing higher up the pitch with Lo Celso and Alli freed up to support him.

Was in and out of my team, heard Lo celso got injured yesterday so that would put me off if he's not playing. Made them tick under Mourinho wherever he played

He looked half dead after an hour against Iceland. It's a shame he's such a slow starter as the fixtures are good and a straight swap to Kun is very appealing.
