How does Kai Havertz compare with Chelsea’s other FPL attacking assets?

Chelsea have continued their spending spree this summer with the acquisition of one of the most coveted young talents in Europe, Kai Havertz.

The attacking midfielder has signed a five-year deal with the Blues, following in the footsteps of Timo Werner (£9.5m) in moving to west London from the Bundesliga.

Arguably the club’s biggest statement since the signing of Eden Hazard from Lille, the German has been priced up at £8.5m – in a similar bracket to Christian Pulisic (£8.5m) and Hakim Ziyech (£8.0m) – by Fantasy Premier League and has the potential to be a real bargain.

Anyone who dabbled in Fantasy Bundesliga this summer would have been excited by what they saw – including some ‘out of position’ run-outs up front – so we’ll assess his FPL credentials in the article below.

Born in Aachen, Germany in June 1999, Havertz started out in amateur football at just four years of age for Alemannia Mariadorf where his grandfather, Richard, was club chairman. His father was a policeman and mother a lawyer so discipline was something that was impressed upon him at a young age.

It was his grandfather who encouraged him in his younger days, spending time with the youngster knocking down gnomes in the garden with his left foot. Richard’s passing when Havertz was just 10 led the German to join his first professional club, Alemannia Aachen.

He only spent a year with his hometown club, with a hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen in an 8-3 loss impressing them enough to make them sign the youngster. He was highly sought after by clubs across the country, including Borussia Monchengladbach and Koln, but Leverkusen pulled out all the stops to sign the exciting prospect.

He notched seven goals and two assists over 23 appearances in his first season in the U17-Bundesliga West but the next season was where he really shone.

After scoring 18 goals, he was awarded the silver Fritz Walter Medal in the 2015/16 season after being named the second-best German under-17s player; two years later he won the gold in the under-19s category.

In October 2016, at 17 years and 126 days of age, he became the youngest debutant in Bayer Leverkusen’s history and later became their youngest scorer with a strike against Wolfsburg in April.

He went on to become the youngest ever player in the Bundesliga to register 50 appearances. Coincidentally, the previous holder of that record was his new Chelsea teammate, Timo Werner. Havertz was also the youngest ever captain of Leverkusen.

After seven goals and 13 assists in his first two seasons, 2018/19 saw him become a household name in Germany with 17 goals from midfield, becoming the first teenager to hit that total in a Bundesliga season.

Nine of Havertz’s 17 goals gave Leverkusen a 1-0 lead and no player in the Bundesliga opened the scoring more frequently that season. Manager Peter Bosz’s attacking philosophy gave him a platform to flourish and he featured in every single game that campaign.

He took three penalties that season, posting an xG of 13.1 and a non-penalty xG of 10.9; this would indicate that he is a good finisher.

“I guess reading the game has always been one of my strengths. A certain composure on the ball and the ability to make the right choices quickly.” – Kai Havertz

Havertz started off the 2019/20 season by becoming the second-youngest player in Bundesliga history to score 25 goals with a strike against Paderborn on the opening day. He went on to register 12 goals and six assists that campaign with an xG of 9.1. Only one of these was a penalty, which meant his non-penalty xG was 8.3. Again, he outperformed his xG significantly and even upped his xA to 6.2.

Over his last three seasons, his non-penalty xG+xA per 90 numbers have been on the rise every year and he averages an expected goal involvement every other game over that period.

“If you can always be one or two steps ahead of your opponent, you can already win the game, and I think that’s just the player he is.” – Leon Bailey, Havertz’s teammate.

Comparison v other Chelsea assets

Ziyech18.252.220.834.80.070.21
Havertz42.4584143.10.190.44

Unlike Ziyech, Havertz is not a volume shooter who takes a lot of speculative shots from outside the box: his minutes/shot is the lowest in the comparison.

However, a large percentage of the youngster’s efforts are on target (43%), compared to the Moroccan (34.8%). In fact, his goals per shot (0.19) is almost triple that of Ziyech’s (0.07).

What’s even more impressive is that Havertz scores with nearly half of his shots on target (44%) whereas Ziyech is closer to 20%. He even bests Werner, who has goals/shot of 0.18 and goals/shot on target of 0.38.

In terms of creativity, only Ziyech (20.8) created chances more frequently than Havertz (41) last season.

The Prospects

Havertz spent most of the 2019/20 season deployed as a no. 10, also featuring on the right flank and at centre-forward at times. Given that Ziyech’s preferred position is on the right wing and Pulisic has been effective on the left, Lampard is expected to use the German behind his compatriot Werner.

Werner is a very different striker compared to Olivier Giroud (£7.0m) and Tammy Abraham (£7.5m). As we saw briefly in the Brighton friendly, he works a lot more off the ball, similar to Roberto Firmino (£9.5m).

Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£6.0m), who was playing as a no. 10, found himself in the box very often as a result of the German’s link-up play and the 4-3-3 that Lampard prefers shaped up into a 4-2-2-2 in transition. Given Havertz’ goal-scoring instincts, the prospects are mouth-watering, to say the least.

Chelsea were second only to Manchester City for expected goals last season, so creating chances was not a problem and by adding an ice-cold finisher like Havertz to their ranks, the Blues’ goal output should go up significantly this season.

With Havertz having had zero minutes with Chelsea in pre-season due to international involvement with Germany, it is perhaps unlikely that Lampard throws him into the fray straight away against Brighton, with a cameo appearance most likely. His minutes should improve as the weeks go on and he settles in, however.

In terms of injury, he has a good overall fitness record with only the muscle tear he suffered in November 2019 causing him to miss more than 15 days out with injury. He has been unavailable for just six games over the past three seasons due to injury or illness.

God has grown tired of everyone’s pleas for help and therefore created…THE BIBLE

On Day 1 God wanted to sort out his formation. He did not want people to say his team was “Bottom heavy” or “Light up top” so he created PERFECT BALANCE:

Def: Premium – Mid – Budget
Mid: Premium – Mid – Budget
Fwd: Premium – Mid – Budget

God had instantly filled 9 out of his 10 starting outfield positions while also reducing his formation options to either 4-3-3 or 3-4-3.

To narrow this further he turned to his bench, whom he did not care for much, and cried “Thou shalt be minimal for the betterment of others”. And so, with defenders starting at £4m and midfields at £4.5m, a 3-4-3 was created along with a final uncategorised midfield.

On Day 2 God had questions, “What was a premium defender? or a budget forward?”. God liked Joe’s idea of ‘price points’ but did not like the name and so he created PRICE RANGES:

    Def: P (£7.5m - £6.5m) M (£6m - £5m) Bud (£4.5m) Ben (£4.0m)

    Mid: P (£12m - £10.5m) M (£10m - £6.5m) Bud (£6 - £5m) Ben (£4.5m)

    Fwd: P (£10.5m - £9m) M (£8.5m - £6.5m) Bud (£6m - £5m) Ben (£4.5m)

God also decided he wanted £4.5m and £4.0m GKs for he was wise.

On Day 3 God had more questions, “Which mid-range midfielder or budget forward do I want”. He wanted players who had the easiest GWs so he used Skonto Rigga’s article to identify teams with FAVORABLE FIXTURES:

    Tottenham, Wolves, Fulham, Everton, Southampton

On Day 4 God had a PLAN. He liked Lateriser’s Upside Chasing strategy and therefore wanted to prioritise premium > premium transfers, switching based on who had the best fixtures in the short term (2 GWs). If his premium players were already optimal then he could then look at mid > mid transfers and then finally budget > budget transfers. This approach therefore meant that his budget players needed to have favourable fixtures over a longer period than his mid players as they potentially would be in his team for longer. This would be the same for mids vs premiums.

On Day 5 God began COMPILING HIS TEAM. He started with premium players. Based on the first 2 GWs Arsenal and Tottenham came out on top so God picked AUBAMEYANG AND KANE. For his premium defender he picked TAA as only Liverpool were in that price range.

For his mid-range and budget players God had already identified the teams with the best opening 6 GWs on Day 3. He therefore picked DOHERTY, TRAORE AND INGS as his mid-ranges and VINAGRE, ARMSTRONG AND MITROVIC as his budgets

God was never going to change his GKs so picked the £4.5m GK he thought would get the most points over the season. This was RYAN with NYLAND as backup.

God had already mentioned on Day 1 that he would go minimal for his bench so picked MITCHELL, FERGUSON AND GORDAN

This just left him with his 1 final uncategorised midfield and with £12m left he bought SALAH.

On Day 6 God looked at Future Transfers. Per his plan on Day 4 he wanted to focus on premium players. The teams with players in the premium ranges were Arsenal, Chelsea, Leicester, Liverpool, Man City, Man Utd and Tottenham. With 2xMids and 1xFwd, God decided to list the top 3 of these teams for each week based on easiest fixture difficulty:

    wk1 wk2 wk3 wk4
    Liv Mun Mcy Mcy
    Ars Ars Che Che
    Tot Tot Tot Lei

God’s opening transfers would therefore be GW 2 (Salah to Fernandes), GW 3 (Aubameyang to Havertz). He stopped there as the beginning of the season always had the most uncertainly.

On Day 7, Today, Sunday, God ended his work and he rested. He thanked everyone mentioned above for the work they had previously done and hoped his children would use these resources more often to make their own decisions. He reminded people that this was a snapshot of his team and was subject to change based on new transfers, injuries, Covid testing etc, however any amendments would still follow his fundamental principles he laid out in Days 1-4. God left never to be heard from again but with the hope that anyone still reading would consider his work going forwards. Amen.

Yeah. Built for options though, if Barnes OR Kane sh1ts the bed and looks rotten it's just a -4 to go Kane to Jiminez and Barnes to Bruno

Seems unlikely Kane, son and Barnes will all backfire

Not bothered about value as Barnes will either hit the ground running or be Bruno by within 5 games

        I marginally prefer

        wba BUR mci WHU AVL

        over

and just think odds of Barnes points in that spell are higher, a fair bit higher

You think my premium midfield, budget forwards strat isn't great and I think your premium forwards, budget mid one is bad 😛

But in all seriousness, I do think your midfield needs help. Bissouma + Stephens is dire.

Double SHU defense is really not advised. I think they're very overpriced. 4.5m there's good value. Downgrade Baldock and Egan and you can get at least one of Bissouma and Stephens upgraded.

I've picked the team as carefully as possible so as to eradicate all known risks of rotation/dropping, Barnes aside

Let's be honest, who has a much stronger bench than mine will end up being, which will be two rubbish mids who play. Strongest bench anyone will likely have is a 4.5 defender or a 5m midfielder if they're willing to bench money

And we all know there's every chance that a better player will emerge that fills one of those three bench positions

          Disagree.

If you have Soucek as 5th mid and some budget forwards, you can get a strong enough bench.

I'd rather have a bench that is like Soucek, Justin, Mitchell vs Stephens, Bissouma, KWP for instance with equal cost.

Basically the quality of my 1st sub is the more important factor.

Well you need it. You have Vinagre, Justin, Soucek, Mitchell and Wickham

Your midfield is killing your squad. Of course you're worried about your bench. You'll be using it

I like the structure and price points, similar to mine, I also have Barnes and no salah.

Don’t like a double SHU def though, as a lot of their clean sheets were due to some unbelievable performances from Henderson.
      Baldock to Tierney IMO.

      Best of luck!

Cheers. I'm going to go with the certainty of SHU players starting. We are only one or two clean sheets (tough against wolves of course) away from the entire community revisiting them and registering that 140 points for a nailed 5-5.5 is very good value. That's something I have much more faith in than hit and hopes like 4.5m Def's or ASM and soucek, who need to step up a great rather than maintain

Finding it very hard to decide on which Chelsea players to pick.

Reece James in defence could be great if he nails down his place at least for the easier games. Very attacking and I can see Chelsea tightening up at the back a bit this year.

In midfield I'd like to have Havertz but I can see him being eased into the team like Pulisic was last year.

Ziyech is also an option but coming from the Dutch league to the EPL can be a big step up although he has been good in Europe.

    Pulisic - injured

Werner looks good but 9.5m is a lot to spend on a forward who I'd rarely captain given the premium options in midfield.

Chelsea players are potentially underpriced. Who are you picking and why?

If you know you’re going to wildcard early then just wait and see how the lineups go. Think they will be a little like Man City with heaps of rotation and frustration especially with champions league starting so quickly

    2. Phil's Stamps

Starting with Werner as he's the focal point of a very attacking team and his price makes him easy to switch to others if not performing. The other's are a wait and see for me, and the mids are at awkward price points for the squad I want to start with.

Werner is a very different striker compared to Olivier Giroud and Tammy Abraham . As we saw briefly in the Brighton friendly, he works a lot more off the ball, similar to Roberto Firmino.

While he may be more similar to Firmino than those 2, they're still not the same player. Think he's quite versatile, can carry out that role too but also has a proven record of scoring.

Can't put an exact price, but I guess it is something like:
      Gk: 8.5
      Def: Trent and around 20m
      Mid: about 45m
      Fwd: about 20m
Spread the remainder where you think best.

Evening folks, I've got an exciting one for you....Any thoughts on Jonjoe Kenny?

Seems to be playing and returning in pre season. I seem to recall Coleman being in and out of the team at the end of the season so thinking its possible that Carlo isn't too keen on him.

He is club captain. Think it’s his to lose but he’s not the player he was before his leg break.
I’d hold off and see who EVERTON buy.
As it stands I’d say Coleman 75% nailed. Kenny 25%

If Kenny goes then Coleman will only be nailed if we fail to bring anyone in.
Just a note, Holgate can be used at rb too but is likely to be first choice cb.

How would you upgrade these jokers with 2 mil?
    (Currently playing 5-3-2)

Should I go with the obvious Mitro and Souchek and play 4-3-3? (Been trying to avoid Mitro at all costs. Ayew?).
