How to play Football Index and a guide to the match day and media dividends

Sponsored by Football Index

Fantasy Football Scout are joining forces with Football Index in the upcoming season.

If you’re new to Football Index, think of it as a revolutionary betting platform that works a bit like a virtual stock market.

Similar to player prices in Fantasy Premier League, the aim is to bet on the future value of the players when the price is low and then sell on when the value is high.

Now imagine you could do that sort of thing and have the opportunity to profit from FPL skills.

Well you can. It’s what happens at Football Index (FI) and Fantasy Football Scout will be dipping its toe into FI’s waters for the season.

Or, more accurately, I will. With a very modest £20 budget to work with, I’ll attempt to play the market, turn a profit and, most importantly of all, have some fun while I’m doing it.

Along the way, Scout will provide some tips on who to buy and sell while I no doubt ignore all that expertise and go for an ill-advised punt that lasts about as long as Martin Kelly’s England career.

GET STARTED WITH FOOTBALL INDEX HERE

So how do you play the game?

Put simply, you place your bet and buy shares in individual players and make/lose money based on the changing value of those shares.

Values change due to a number of factors, but like ‘real’ stock exchange shares, the key reason is popularity. The more people buy into a player, the greater his price, and vice versa. The trick, as ever, is to buy before values go up, and sell before they go down.

There are, however, many other ways to win on FI – dividends.

Many of these dividends give FI more of a Fantasy Football feel because they are based on the players’ on-pitch performance.

FI has just overhauled its dividend pay-outs and it’s not controversial to say that they are extremely generous, with a number of 100% increases in certain areas.

Dividends are awarded to owners of players who excel for their side, with bigger pay-outs for stand-out performances on major match days (10+ fixtures across Europe’s top five leagues/the Champions/Europa League and the European Championships). There are also awards for players who make it into FI’s team of the month.

All those dividends rely on the sort of match day data that drives any decent fantasy game these days, as well as the bonus point system in FPL. So a goal will earn a player 45 points as part of their dividend ranking, a red card -30 and so on. Defenders earn clean sheet points, while keepers also enjoy a raft of exclusive ways to make their mark.

One other dividend is different. And daily.

The media dividend is paid out to the player with the most mentions across a range of major media sources every single day.

Seen through the prism of the last few days, it demonstrates how Football Index works on a fundamental level.

Take the example of Lionel Messi. Talk of the pint-sized legend leaving Barca once and for all and this news has dominated the media recently, resulting in a massive jump in his price.

These things change, obviously, but the last time I checked it would cost you seven quid for a single Messi share – two pounds more than before he hit the fax machine, which is a huge rise in relation to his overall value.

And for those of you who can only think in these terms when talking about Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo is currently at just over three pounds.

Compare that to Harry Maguire. Despite being all over the media, FI‘s dividend doesn’t take bad publicity into account. It’s not a measure of infamy.

But the fallout of his recent press coverage – the Paddington Hard Stare from Southgate, being dropped from the England squad etc – has clearly spooked some owners into selling their shares in him.

The bottom line – not all news is good news with FI‘s media dividend, but it’s a daily way for a chance to win.

There’s even a set of in-play dividends to win from, with FI paying out on individual actions (goals, assists, clean sheets etc) by players for the first 30 days that you own them.

Like all the best games, the rules are fairly straightforward, but the nuances start to pile up as you become more familiar with how things can play out.

I, no doubt, will pick up on some of these nuances, and get burned by others, as I wend my merry way through a season of Football Index trading.

I hope you’ll join me for the ride.

And in the meantime, all the rules and regs can be found on FI’s excellent Academy Page here.

Settled on this - Antonio 1 week punt before switching to Martial

    Thoughts?

Why're people doubling up at the back with Southampton getting KWP and McCarthy? Their fixtures are good and I know defenders at 4.5m are hard to come by especially given the GW1 blank (Burnley) but I don't think they warrant a double up

Set for gw2 by benching Bruno. Monitoring presser for Soucek/Rodriguez news. Egan on the sidelines for gw2 & 3 nice fixtures and cover incase one of my 1st 11 don't start.

I like the idea of saving myself that transfer. If I don't bench him I tie myself into a gw2 utd purchase.

    How's this team?

Vinagre still a worry. DCL suddenly seems a decent pick with jrod addition. Double chelsea is definitely going to be excellent at some point.

I like it. But there are definitely question marks on the defense. I dont like to tie myself into defender changes if I can help it and Justin and vinagre look like transfers waiting to happen.

Debating on what I think about 5m mids, had planned Soucek but a bit worried now and he was only for GW1 to cover the blank.

A - Davies (double up with Doherty) and 4.5 mid or 1st sub
B - 5m mid and have Taylor for GW2 onwards

Tempted by a def of TAA, Doherty, Davies, Saiss for set and forget for 7/8 GWs

True, I guess it also comes down to if I want to risk the double up or have Burnley defence and and then Doherty. I'm never too keen on double ups at the back but those fixtures seem too good plus the Mou effect

I have Mitchel now that Vinagre is too big a risk. That set and forget defence is looking good now I look at it though!

It all comes down to what I do with my main striker. If I got Ings to Martial I can save the 0.5 from having Werner.

Doubt Mitchell is good for more than one or two weeks. On my set up I’m trying to rationalise Ings to Rich - who has marginally better fixtures. Other options are TAA to Robbo or Son to Alli!!

What's your team? I'd say go with the last one. I've got Alli in.

May have been biased from watching All or Nothing but I think if he's fit he does well. Especially since he's central all the time and not at risk of being stuck wide.

    England team is fascinating.

Last game they played with two inverted fullbacks, and two AMs (City 17/18 style); but this game it looks like they're going for two overlapping fullbacks and a more reserved midfield 3 (Liverpool style). It means they'll be creating from out wide, rather than trying to force it through a congested centre like the Iceland game. Should be much more effective.

      - I personally don't fancy double Southampton defense from the get go
      - I think finding the extra cash for Alli-> Son will be worth it
      - Werner + Havertz is too much considering bha and LIV in the opening fixtures. Combined with the fitness of Puli and ZIyech and the expected time Havertz needs to adapt I think Werner is enough from the start.
      - I would personally rather have JWP/Pereira and 4.5 forward than Adams + 4.5 midfielder.

Love the Havertz pick! There's risk with Havertz but at 8.5M but is quaility and there's options to replace if he backfires. I don't think there are obvious weaknesses and the bench is good. The main 2 I'd be concerned with are Davies and Saiss, because Spurs have Europa and the clean sheets might be hard to find. Saiss is more under threat from Marcal. I'd maybe look at changing both to Tierney and KWP (even with the Saints double up risk - which could be solved by switching to Ryan).

If you're sure that Salah + Antonio will be worth the -4 and a total one week punt, this might work.

I think Antonio won't score though and Salah could easily blank too. So I'd rather play more cautiously.

Agreed, and football index is nothing like the stock market. It's a scam as you can't sell players without making a loss as the spread is ridiculous. Stay away would be my advice. I've been there a year an can't escape without taking big hits on instant sells.

You know in theory the template is rubbish, because one week you could be out the template and a week later you could be template because things have changed.

By things I mean your players become more common due to form, injuries etc.

Trent winning YPOTY has jumped him right up in the media rankings on FI which will bring in some nice dividends for me tomorrow.

My most expensive players are 10.5 million, reckon for the first 9/10 gws Kane, Bruno and Werner will rotate well for the armband

Most days I’ll be behind the couch but you get a more balanced team without the big guns

It's interesting how there may be an opportunity to have multiple captain picks at 10.5m and under. Martial and Wener at 9-9.5m can be great captain picks as well. Gonna be a wild season.

More choices this season , it’s great rather than the usual captain Salah

Ohhh, I see that James Rodriguez has been added at £7.5M. Is he likely to be a gw1 starter?

If so, what do you think regarding these options:

    a) KWP + Alli
    b) Egan / Saiss + Rodriguez

    If b) which defender??

He's likely to start in GW1 I think. If he doesn't, he'll come on as a sub.

I'm not getting him. I have DCL who I'm hoping he'll assist.

I think it's safer to start with Son who is nailed and proven. Also 0.5 more so easy downgrade if Havertz looks better

Guys....why is Hendo without chance in your national team? I understand that Pickford is #1, but....some minutes will do

All settled with a solid defence (5 all long term players) & the big hitters I want to start with. Looking solid?

My only other question is McCarthy or Ryan? As I have KWP!

    McCarthy
    TAA, Davies, Egan, KWP
    Salah, Auba, Havertz, ASM
    Werner, Ings
    (4.0, Bissouma, C.Taylor, 4.5)

Currently looking at something almost identical at TGW back - Egan or Saiss?

Still tying myself in knots over front 2 and 3rd mid. Double Chelsea not for me from the off but suspect I’ll end up with one.
