How to play Football Index and a guide to the match day and media dividends

Sponsored by Football Index

Fantasy Football Scout are joining forces with Football Index in the upcoming season.

If you’re new to Football Index, think of it as a revolutionary betting platform that works a bit like a virtual stock market.

Similar to player prices in Fantasy Premier League, the aim is to bet on the future value of the players when the price is low and then sell on when the value is high.

Now imagine you could do that sort of thing and have the opportunity to profit from FPL skills.

Well you can. It’s what happens at Football Index (FI) and Fantasy Football Scout will be dipping its toe into FI’s waters for the season.

Or, more accurately, I will. With a very modest £20 budget to work with, I’ll attempt to play the market, turn a profit and, most importantly of all, have some fun while I’m doing it.

Along the way, Scout will provide some tips on who to buy and sell while I no doubt ignore all that expertise and go for an ill-advised punt that lasts about as long as Martin Kelly’s England career.

GET STARTED WITH FOOTBALL INDEX HERE

So how do you play the game?

Put simply, you place your bet and buy shares in individual players and make/lose money based on the changing value of those shares.

Values change due to a number of factors, but like ‘real’ stock exchange shares, the key reason is popularity. The more people buy into a player, the greater his price, and vice versa. The trick, as ever, is to buy before values go up, and sell before they go down.

There are, however, many other ways to win on FI – dividends.

Many of these dividends give FI more of a Fantasy Football feel because they are based on the players’ on-pitch performance.

FI has just overhauled its dividend pay-outs and it’s not controversial to say that they are extremely generous, with a number of 100% increases in certain areas.

Dividends are awarded to owners of players who excel for their side, with bigger pay-outs for stand-out performances on major match days (10+ fixtures across Europe’s top five leagues/the Champions/Europa League and the European Championships). There are also awards for players who make it into FI’s team of the month.

All those dividends rely on the sort of match day data that drives any decent fantasy game these days, as well as the bonus point system in FPL. So a goal will earn a player 45 points as part of their dividend ranking, a red card -30 and so on. Defenders earn clean sheet points, while keepers also enjoy a raft of exclusive ways to make their mark.

One other dividend is different. And daily.

The media dividend is paid out to the player with the most mentions across a range of major media sources every single day.

Seen through the prism of the last few days, it demonstrates how Football Index works on a fundamental level.

Take the example of Lionel Messi. Talk of the pint-sized legend leaving Barca once and for all and this news has dominated the media recently, resulting in a massive jump in his price.

These things change, obviously, but the last time I checked it would cost you seven quid for a single Messi share – two pounds more than before he hit the fax machine, which is a huge rise in relation to his overall value.

And for those of you who can only think in these terms when talking about Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo is currently at just over three pounds.

Compare that to Harry Maguire. Despite being all over the media, FI‘s dividend doesn’t take bad publicity into account. It’s not a measure of infamy.

But the fallout of his recent press coverage – the Paddington Hard Stare from Southgate, being dropped from the England squad etc – has clearly spooked some owners into selling their shares in him.

The bottom line – not all news is good news with FI‘s media dividend, but it’s a daily way for a chance to win.

There’s even a set of in-play dividends to win from, with FI paying out on individual actions (goals, assists, clean sheets etc) by players for the first 30 days that you own them.

Like all the best games, the rules are fairly straightforward, but the nuances start to pile up as you become more familiar with how things can play out.

I, no doubt, will pick up on some of these nuances, and get burned by others, as I wend my merry way through a season of Football Index trading.

I hope you’ll join me for the ride.

And in the meantime, all the rules and regs can be found on FI’s excellent Academy Page here.

As an Everton I've got that all too familiar feeling of pre-season optimism today. Doucoure is a great signing. Not quite sure how it all fits together but those three signings are really solid. Think we'll be a lot tougher in the middle this season. Richarlison is looking like the player to own as a result IMO.

Not for me - think Richarlison is the one to really gain from these signings (Especially Doco). There's a danger DCL'll be the makeway in sub choices. Risk is he'll be the one moved on around 59 mins unless he's having a banger. Definitely a form/confidence player. That said - he'll get the chances...

        Back 4 in 4321 or 433 (perhaps...)

        Coleman / Holgate / Keane / Digne
        Doucoure / Gomez / Allan
        Richarlison / James
        DCL

I'd have thought Doucoure will be sided with Richarlison at first.

There's a history there with Watford connection. Makes sense to play him either central right in pair or further right with Richarlison ahead of him in two banks of 3. Everton have a history of pairing up wingers, attackers and playmakers. Baines with Pienaar is good recent example.

Can't decide on this. Any thoughts appreciated:

    a) Soucek and Martial, ready for GW2.
    b) C. Wilson and a 7.5 mid.

Second option gives me a more balanced team but then difficult to get on utd and city assets in GW2 onwards. Do think Martial is gonna be a good pick though...

I don't like double Liverpool defense right now, although I expect it to improve as the season goes on.

Doherty isn't absolutely nailed to start ATM but offers a greater attacking threat and a way into a Spurs' defense which seems to be getting more solid under Mourinho.

      1. Hiroku

"Don't like double Liverpool defense" when one of those defenders is VVD, is what I mean. TAA and Robertson get so many assists I see them as midfielders with extra clean sheet points, at which point Liverpool's potentialyl poor defensive form isn't that much of a problem.

I was initially thinking of getting zaha from GW3. Bats would save a bit of money and I like him. Shame hodgson is the manager, but their front 4 is very exciting this season

Would seem it's been agreed pretty much - loan to buy for 20 mill and wages partly covered is the talk. Chelsea get a deal as they don't lose him for free next time.

Good relations between Palace and Chelsea - last time was the first season for ages we didn't take one on loan. This also explains why Gallagher didn't happen despite medical.

Cody is as nailed as it gets, but Wolves defense looks a bit suspect to me this season having lost both WBs.
Dier is looking like a reliable starter and offers a bigger threat from set pieces.

Think Ayling might do well. KWP deserves a mention if talking attacking potential. Looked really handy end of last season.

Taylor only pick for fairly regular CS

    Mccarthy (Peacock)
    TAA, Doherty, Justin (Ayling, Mitchell)

Looking like my best draft so far... Getting Everton in, is my only worry. Thoughts?

I've seen enough pre seasons to know that when Everton look tempting, just to wait and see how they look. Digne was the last straw

    Picking DCL was beyond that

I can live with one failed pick, as long as they start and drop in price. DCL and Richa as good mid-price options as the alternatives

    Changed half my team
    Vinagre - doubt

Greenwood - benched as punishment v Palace at least - likely??
After that only Brighton and Newcastle see like good fixtures

Justin - don't trust Leicester defence plus is a transfer waiting to happen in a few weeks

    Decided to go:

    McCarthy - (Nyland)
    Davies-Doherty-KWP (Ferguson-Mitchell)
    Son-JWP-Aubameyang - Saka (Bissouma)
    Jiminez-Werner-Vardy

3m in the bank to: either with saved transfer or -4
transfer out - Aubameyang and Saka
transfer in - Pulisic and one of Mane/Salah/Sterling/KDB
Don't have to worry about price rises.
Saka a risk but ASM does not convince even if Saka is only super sub v Fulham and West Ham could get more points

Don't think Liverpool will do well gw1-3 so I am avoiding.

Why not upgrade Saka to Havertz, Ziyech(if fit) or even Alli from the get go

Fair point. But I had earmarked Pulisic as the fella to get. Was unsure on Havertz/Ziyech fitness and where they would play.

I see Pulli being the one to have too may be eased back in though, You can switch Havertz to Pulli same way you want to do Saka to Pulli though?

Saka ceiling not as high as those i mentioned imo

You have me thinking now. I think just like Arsenal's two fixtures and if Saka does start happy days.
Whereas with Chelsea I feel I have Werner but another Chelsea would mean poor fixture gw2 v Liverpool.

Chelsea deffo have the attacking ability to score vs Liverpool, don't remember the last time liverpool kept a CS. I reckon thats going to be high scoring game. Saka only really has assist potential and who knows he might not even start both games

Another valid point, considering I do not rate the Liverpool defence to get them in for 1st three at least.
Plus Chelsea have nice fixtures after Liverpool.
Only doubt I have now will Havertz start? A Chelsea fan on this site said he could be gradually phased into the side like Pulisic.
