Sky Sports

The best goalkeepers and defenders for Sky Sports Fantasy Football

With less than a week to go, the time is now to decide on which defenders will and will not make your Sky Sports Fantasy Football backline.

Goalkeepers and defenders are an integral part of any team, but they have become increasingly important in the art of Fantasy Football, and even more so in Sky Sports Fantasy Football.

Rewinding to the 2018/19 campaign, I reported that there were five defenders among the top 10 point-scorers in the game, but fast forward to last season, and there were four goalkeepers and defenders combined who achieved the same feat, those being Dean Henderson and the Liverpool trio of Andrew Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk.

There are some potential bargains, and there are some which will come out of the woodwork, but two, or three of these five defensive players should be at the heart of your consideration when building your starting XI.

John Egan – £7.2m

Claiming an impressive 146 Fantasy Football points in his debut season in the Premier League, John Egan was value-for-money during Sheffield United’s successful campaign. Even with an increased price tag of £7.2m, he comes in as one of the cheapest assets in defence who started the majority of games last season.

This is reflected in his selection percentage, which currently stands at 11.75%. The price caters to accommodate those bigger players in defence, but at one of the value or budget picks, you will not go too far wrong with Egan, a solid defender who kept 13 clean sheets last term, scoring twice and picking up two man-of-the-match awards too.

Virgil van Dijk – £10.9m

Liverpool's FPL defenders struggle as Arteta hands out Arsenal goalkeeper clues

For the second season in succession, Virgil van Dijk recorded the most points out of any of the defenders, and of any player in Sky Sports Fantasy Football, despite racking up 31 points less (268) than he did in 2018/19 (299). This does still equate to 7.1 points per game, a fitting average for the most expensive defender, his price inflating to £10.9m for the new season.

It does not seem to have put many off, with van Dijk making it into 32.37 per cent of Fantasy Football teams. With 15 clean sheets, five goals, and hitting tier two passing bonus points (70+) on 21 occasions last season, it seems that even £10.9m is not beyond the extreme to have the Dutch skipper in your side.

With just four games to navigate before the Overhaul (unlimited transfers within the £100m budget for a set period of time), van Dijk looks a good route to get your season off and running emphatically, starting with new boys Leeds on Saturday, despite Chelsea and Arsenal following afterwards.

Nick Pope – £6.7m

The Burnley stopper registered a whopping 215 Fantasy points last season, just three behind Dean Henderson, who topped the charts. Nick Pope kept 15 clean sheets, just the one behind Ederson who claimed the Golden Glove. He has since earned an England call-up off the back of his solid performances between the sticks.

Burnley’s ever-resolute defence only let in 50 goals last campaign, and this level of consistency is expected to continue next year. After a tough trip to Leicester on the opening day, Burnley face Southampton and Newcastle before the international break.

Pope tallied tier one bonus points (three or more saves) on 15 occasions and tier two (five or more saves) six times, so even when clean sheets may be hard to come by, there will still be averages coming in from your number one.

Trent Alexander-Arnold – £10.6m

Trent Alexander-Arnold finished fourth in the Sky Sports Fantasy Football charts last campaign with 245 points. He made double figures with assists for the second consecutive season, ending on 13 from that department. Trent cruised his way to the Young Player of the Year award, and is set for another enjoyable term in the red of Liverpool.

Perhaps it is the fact that the English full back comes into the game £0.3m cheaper than his teammate Virgil van Dijk is the reason behind a higher selection percentage, which stands at 37.07 per cent. Will Alexander-Arnold make it into your starting XI for the opening day?

Kieran Tierney – £8.1m

We really started to see the best of Kieran Tierney towards the back end of last season, and the Scotsman played his part in Arsenal’s FA Cup final success. With a pre-season under his belt, he should be fit and raring to go ahead of the new campaign.

His statistics may not look the most promising, but his ability to get down the flanks and right to the byline before delivering inch-perfect crosses should account for an upturn in assists from defence. As well as this, Arsenal’s defence should (should) be a bit more solid and sturdy with William Saliba coming back from his loan spell and the introduction of Gabriel, so clean sheet points could be easier to come by.

Only a short period of time awaits until the first match of the season, with Fulham hosting Arsenal at Craven Cottage.

Change and amend your team, and who knows, you could land yourself the £50,000 jackpot!

He's a wait and see, plenty of ability, age a striker usually peaks, cheap as chips.

    * Plan is to use Willian for gw1 and then swap gw2 to Rashford.
Main concerns addressed with this team is lack of captain options but I don't think it's going to be too much of a problem with Salah, Son and Rashford, although I'd love to have Hernandez instead but don't see how I can do that (Could Doherty -> Davies..).

    Thanks!

Maybe, but I think the point distribution from the alternatives will make up for it.

Didn't have Auba for the majority of Arsenal's nice fixture run last season and managed a top 3k spot despite it.

How much planning do you do for the season and do you find it beneficial?
I always create a spreadsheet of fixtures with team attack and defence ratings, projected player scores etc.
Basically my own version of RMT so that I can play around with rotating different players, planning transfers and ensuring that I have a good captain option each week.

2018/19 I used my spreadsheet and plans to consider my options each week, it always meant I was thinking about the long term impact of each transfer and I could use fixtures to predict improvements in player returns. I used it all season and had my best finish so far.

2019/20 I was ranked 2.9 million after the first 4 weeks, gave up on my plans and transferred in all the players who were doing well and rising in price.I had just started a new job which was taking up a lot of my time so I made a lot of transfers without proper consideration. What really upset me was at Christmas I added up all the player points my plan and discovered I would have been top 10k (I was about 300k at the time).

This year I think planning will be more important than ever. Teams that were in transition now contain real options and there are so many premium players that many will be chasing their tails transferring in last week's 15 point striker.

Back to the original question: How much planning do you do for the season and do you find it beneficial?

quite a lot - mainly on lineups to find undervalued players by way of circumstances/injuries, not too many of them this year (players like Vinagre, as a now bad example)

I usually make a fairly punty team early on, with cheap defenders but covering the best captaincy options and then WC early - but last season I kidded myself that I didn't need to wildcard because Cantwell and Moura started well and I had Pukki locked up early, didn't go well. This time it's TAA Robbo Boly Mane Auba, nice and safe - save the WC

Haha, nah, but I do relentlessly scan the ticker and individual players fixtures with my own evaluation of them - everything in the forecast has to be short & mid term benefit - long term couldn’t care less about!

And then it’s form, what I did last year that I hadn’t in a long time was hunt for new early form (No consideration to player status or how they look paper) with great fixtures

Definitely for premium players, I tend to look more long term at the cheap players because I don't want to waste a transfer on them. I'm using most of my transfers on my premium striker slot if all goes to plan.
If you email me I'll send a copy tomorrow.
You can tell me how wrong my points predictions are.

Don't make spreadsheets or anything but i have a plan of attack in my head going into new seasons.

In saying that i never had a great start in any of the 15 seasons i've played fpl so i can't exactly say this approach is best.
I try to leave my options open and give myself a little wiggle room to change gears if/when the need arises as a general rule of thumb.

Fingers crossed this will be the season that i come charging out of the blocks but usually i am the kinda manager that has to feel my way into the game as it progresses.

So, having tried every combination under the sun & found a few I like...this is the one that keeps things simple for me. No idea if itll even work though, but i think it suits my style of play.

    GW1 4-4-2 (AWB on bench)
GW2 onwards mostly 5-3-2 (Soucek on bench)

I'm focusing all of my transfers on optimising the captaincy on the fixtures/form of the premium mids & minimising the amount of decisions i have to make, as i generally get pretty frustrated. The way i see it.....the mid priced options are the hardest pieces of the puzzle to fit in as you always need to make two subs to upgrade or downgrade them. Premiums where it matters up top, the rest of the ££££ in defence.

    McCarthey
    TAA Robbo Azpi Doherty AWB
    Auba Salah JWP Soucek Stephens
    Werner Mitrovic 4.5

I would like 0.5 in the pocket though. Any ideas where i could skim that? I need nailed defenders with a penchant for BAPS / Assists or Goals. Maybe AWB for James / Bertrand / Coleman?

I hear you. I tried it last year & posted my worst ever score. But I panicked & couldnt settle on a squad. I think 5 at the back alone wont win anything, but im hoping to couple it with an aggressive strategy of transferring the premium mids / strikers in and out & optimising their output on captaincy. Keeps it simpler for me....but its certainly risky!

I like it overall but I'd want a Wolves defender rather than Azpi.
If it looks like Vinagre is staying he would be great value and frees up £1.5m.
Throw in Robertson to Van Dijk and you can turn your £4.5m striker into Wilson.

I hear you there. Azpi is usually good for 140-150 a season, so im hoping Chealsea will be better this year at the back.

          For who?

          And how?

I can't. I've tried a million combinations and it doesn't work well. If I do Salah > Fernandes I'm floating 1.5m which is not easily used. If I keep money in the bank it means I need to take a midfield punt at 10.5 or under and I don't like any of them. They would have to outscore Justin +4 points. There is genuinely not a single midfielder I would be confident would be able to do that I don't own already.

It comes down to basically, how much do I value Bruno. If I want Bruno no matter what, the best play is to bench him. However, if he's just a nice to have or an option down the line, the clear line is to avoid.

Yes. Because it is a forced transfer of a 9.0m player that you should be keeping (Son is not a placeholder) and the transfer costs 4 points.

And before you go on about transfers costing 0... they don't ever cost 0 especially at the start of the season. Opportunity cost of a transfer means later down the line that hit you have to take, if you were prudent, could have been 2 FTs instead.

I don't know why you take such offense at people disagreeing.

I agree with you that there is a difference between GW1 and midseason. But I dispute that it's as large as you say. You are benching a player for the long term over the short-term. That concept remains in this situation.

Yes, it's worse in midseason because of stored value and because you need two transfers to move a player out then back in, but even so, it still saves you a transfer. And in the specific case of Bruno, it impacts your team greatly if he is priority because if you really want him in GW2 you have two feasible options.

                    1. Salah > Bruno. This floats 1.5m. That 1.5m is the difference between getting say Ings and DCL or Havertz over Barnes. AND it costs you 4 points.
                    2. Son > Bruno (1.5 ITB). This costs you 4 points and the value of a replacement bench player you could have like Justin. This is beside the fact that I have no desire to sell Son.

Both are situations I did not like ultimately more than benching Bruno. I think those are the two most realistic options for how to focus on getting Bruno in GW2. And I do think that getting Bruno in GW2 is my priority.

In the end it's priorities. My priority is to have Bruno in GW2 and neither of the two options I presented feel like more profitable lines than benching him.

          Sigh...

It basically comes down to how badly you want Bruno. If you don't really want Bruno that much and will be pivot transfer if Salah doesn't deliver in GW1 then it's a bad move. But if he's an essential part of your team, if it's a transfer for sure, then it's worth benching him. Same concept as when you have a bunch of Liverpool players in GW18 from last season and no WC. You don't get rid of them for one week. You bench them even though they're expensive because you know for a fact you'll want them back after.

There's even an additional benefit here in that you can handpick how you're going to cover their absences with free choice. So you can micromanage perfect cover with like a Soucek vs NEW and you benefit from knowing with certainty that he will play unlike in injury situations like Mane last season. I TC'd Mane in GW24 and then benched him in 25. Benching a 12m player blah blah blah. Ended up working out great because he came back and scored after he had already left a lot of teams.

Alright well... that's just a fundamental difference in the way we play. Those transfers cost points. I think points are more difficult to predict. I'd take my 4 points in hand than scrabble in the bush for more. And in GW1 especially, I think it's very hard to do.

I looked. I could not find a clearly standout midfielder for 10.5m or less that will haul in GW1 to outscore Justin + 4 points. Of course I could pick one like Son or Willian or Barnes, but I think the odds are against me getting it right.

Camzy, in my opinion there are only couple of mids that would be worth of bringing Bruno in with a free transfer instead of benching: son, havertz (you already probably have them), and Alli, because they legitimately can and probably will outscore Justin's predicted clean sheet. For all other "contenders" like Zaha, Armstrong, Willian, it would probably be best to bench Bruno.

Nope, but Bruno is kinda specific case. I will personally bring Martial in GW2 with a free transfer and for me its a lot easier to either downgrade from Werner or upgrade from Ings&Jimenez who could all potentially haul in GW1, but with Bruno, the options are far lesser in numbers

The 1.5M left from the Salah to Bruno transfer is key I think. That money is useful else where and by benching Bruno you can use that to get the structure of the team right from the start. Plus getting Bruno early means you are 1 step ahead of the template.

How can you say that so conclusively? How can you prove that the strategy is wrong? Results are results. If Salah blanks in GW1 and Bruno scores 15 in GW2. The strategy worked.

If Salah scores a ton in GW1 and Bruno blanks in GW2 it didn't. But I think the key tenets of the strategy are sound if you have good cover. It beats taking a hit imo.

Exactly - you felt it was better to take a guaranteed 0 points from a 12.5m asset for 1 week than take a hit or use a FT because you wanted that asset longer term

Some people feel that it’s better to take a guaranteed 0 points for 1 week from one or more out of a 7.5 asset (Greenwood) a 9.0 asset (Martial) a 9.5 asset (Rashford) or a 10.5 asset (Bruno) or KDB because they want the asset longer term

You do understand that unless crystal balls are correct.

The argument is completely different mid game, with value tied up and requiring a transfer out and back in

I honestly don’t think it’s wildly different - if someone wants Bruno & Martial & even Rashford or Greenwood long term - they’re going to have to take a hit if they don’t start with one of them on the bench

Of course it is - within 2 gws you can move for 2 previously unavailable options for free. Benching them is missing out on opportunity points the budget provides only to save yourself a transfer for future opportunity points

I disagree - The principle is exactly the same - he prioritised the long term over the short term

That’s what the people who are choosing to start with Utd or city assets on the bench are doing

It's very difficult to do a proper comparison here.

Because the actual comparison is something like:

Salah -1.5m in team value spread
                      vs
Justin +1.5m in team value spread +4 points

The middle part is very hard to quantify.

                  I despair at this

It’s not a failed gotcha - the guy benched Salah rather than take a hit

People are benching Utd assets rather than take a hit

Yes - you benched a 12.5m asset and a 7.5 asset because you wanted them longer term rather than taking hits and using FTs

Those advocating starting with Utd/city assets on the bench want them longer term rather than taking hits and using FTs

I’m benching Shaw and Foden. I can see the logic in both sides of the debate though but I’d struggle to bench anyone over 7m personally.

I'm the opposite. I'm okay with benching Bruno but I will not bench more than any 1 player.

Again, I can see the logic in this also. In my case, I had 2x 4.5m bench fodder and decided to downgrade one player to upgrade two.

It does sounds mental but the mitigating factor that allows it on this occasion is Soucek. Hes dirt cheap & has a favourable fixtute. If it was a regular 5.0 mid then it would be a definite no go.

Saying that, i wouldnt do it. But i understand why some think they can get away with it

Soucek is couging and unlikely to play.

All this whining over 1 transfer in one week that is probably going to affect under 0.5% of your season points total 😆

Can see DCL posting decent numbers with James supplying the attack at Everton. All 3 are wait and see for me though.
