The best goalkeepers and defenders for Sky Sports Fantasy Football

With less than a week to go, the time is now to decide on which defenders will and will not make your Sky Sports Fantasy Football backline.

Goalkeepers and defenders are an integral part of any team, but they have become increasingly important in the art of Fantasy Football, and even more so in Sky Sports Fantasy Football.

Rewinding to the 2018/19 campaign, I reported that there were five defenders among the top 10 point-scorers in the game, but fast forward to last season, and there were four goalkeepers and defenders combined who achieved the same feat, those being Dean Henderson and the Liverpool trio of Andrew Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk.

There are some potential bargains, and there are some which will come out of the woodwork, but two, or three of these five defensive players should be at the heart of your consideration when building your starting XI.

John Egan – £7.2m

Claiming an impressive 146 Fantasy Football points in his debut season in the Premier League, John Egan was value-for-money during Sheffield United’s successful campaign. Even with an increased price tag of £7.2m, he comes in as one of the cheapest assets in defence who started the majority of games last season.

This is reflected in his selection percentage, which currently stands at 11.75%. The price caters to accommodate those bigger players in defence, but at one of the value or budget picks, you will not go too far wrong with Egan, a solid defender who kept 13 clean sheets last term, scoring twice and picking up two man-of-the-match awards too.

Virgil van Dijk – £10.9m

Liverpool's FPL defenders struggle as Arteta hands out Arsenal goalkeeper clues

For the second season in succession, Virgil van Dijk recorded the most points out of any of the defenders, and of any player in Sky Sports Fantasy Football, despite racking up 31 points less (268) than he did in 2018/19 (299). This does still equate to 7.1 points per game, a fitting average for the most expensive defender, his price inflating to £10.9m for the new season.

It does not seem to have put many off, with van Dijk making it into 32.37 per cent of Fantasy Football teams. With 15 clean sheets, five goals, and hitting tier two passing bonus points (70+) on 21 occasions last season, it seems that even £10.9m is not beyond the extreme to have the Dutch skipper in your side.

With just four games to navigate before the Overhaul (unlimited transfers within the £100m budget for a set period of time), van Dijk looks a good route to get your season off and running emphatically, starting with new boys Leeds on Saturday, despite Chelsea and Arsenal following afterwards.

Nick Pope – £6.7m

The Burnley stopper registered a whopping 215 Fantasy points last season, just three behind Dean Henderson, who topped the charts. Nick Pope kept 15 clean sheets, just the one behind Ederson who claimed the Golden Glove. He has since earned an England call-up off the back of his solid performances between the sticks.

Burnley’s ever-resolute defence only let in 50 goals last campaign, and this level of consistency is expected to continue next year. After a tough trip to Leicester on the opening day, Burnley face Southampton and Newcastle before the international break.

Pope tallied tier one bonus points (three or more saves) on 15 occasions and tier two (five or more saves) six times, so even when clean sheets may be hard to come by, there will still be averages coming in from your number one.

Trent Alexander-Arnold – £10.6m

Trent Alexander-Arnold finished fourth in the Sky Sports Fantasy Football charts last campaign with 245 points. He made double figures with assists for the second consecutive season, ending on 13 from that department. Trent cruised his way to the Young Player of the Year award, and is set for another enjoyable term in the red of Liverpool.

Perhaps it is the fact that the English full back comes into the game £0.3m cheaper than his teammate Virgil van Dijk is the reason behind a higher selection percentage, which stands at 37.07 per cent. Will Alexander-Arnold make it into your starting XI for the opening day?

Kieran Tierney – £8.1m

We really started to see the best of Kieran Tierney towards the back end of last season, and the Scotsman played his part in Arsenal’s FA Cup final success. With a pre-season under his belt, he should be fit and raring to go ahead of the new campaign.

His statistics may not look the most promising, but his ability to get down the flanks and right to the byline before delivering inch-perfect crosses should account for an upturn in assists from defence. As well as this, Arsenal’s defence should (should) be a bit more solid and sturdy with William Saliba coming back from his loan spell and the introduction of Gabriel, so clean sheet points could be easier to come by.

Only a short period of time awaits until the first match of the season, with Fulham hosting Arsenal at Craven Cottage.

Change and amend your team, and who knows, you could land yourself the £50,000 jackpot!

Would anyone like a guess at Salah's average points per appearance last season playing away from home?
And while you are at it, how does that compare to KDB's average points when playing away?

It is a new season. There is also the statistics of KDB doing better with David Silva.

You really cannot compare Salah and KDB.

Well seeing as you took pity and had a guess:
        Salah 5.6 points per appearance.
        KDB 5.7 points per appearance.

The biggest difference was actually home games.
        Salah 8.2, KDB 8.7

To be honest it's making me reconsider my whole team, I might just have to ignore premium forwards and have Salah, KDB and Fernandes.
Those three are in a different league to everyone else if this season goes anything like the last.

Auba too now that he's in midfield. I'm curious how much might be gained by setting up a transfer rotation involving these four.

Liverpool's weird midfield has been key to their remarkable Premier League season
    https://www.espn.co.uk/football/english-premier-league/story/4066509/liverpools-weird-midfield-has-been-key-to-their-remarkable-premier-league-season

"If xG has slowly taught teams to take fewer long shots and try and work the ball further toward goal, perhaps Liverpool are the archetype for what Goal Probability Added teaches us: progress the ball out wide, make lots of cross-field balls to stretch the opponent, use your CMs to destroy any potentially valuable attacks through the middle rather than create and have possibly the most talented attack in the league." - StatsBomb's CTO, Thom Lawrence

People may criticise a midfield with no playmakers, like the one Southgate used, but there is more to it than that. Firmino and the fullbacks are the key to making it work for Liverpool, but if everything is right, a more reserved midfield 3 might be the most effective way to play football.

For those that don't know about Goal Probability Added, Liverpool's director of research explains the metric on a Freakonomics podcast. https://tinyurl.com/yyek2cs3
It's basically how Liverpool measure how good a player is, and it's helped them recruit gems like Firmino and Robertson when other clubs overlook them. It's the new gold standard of metrics. Not much use in FPL, because we don't really care how good the player is, but I thought it's interesting.

Your research and data analysis department is annoyingly good. Thankfully you don't have the financial power of other clubs or you'd dominate.

Maybe the fact they aren't buying anyone is because they can't see any meaningful deals because said analysis is showing that players in the current market are overvalued.

I don't really know how you improve Liverpool's team other than get someone better than Joe Gomez in defense. Players better than Gomez with room to grow are devastatingly few. Maybe the midfield 3 of Henderson, Wijnaldum, Fabinho can be improved but seeing as Gini is wanted by Barca and Henderson is the club captain and has qualities beyond technical, it's extremely hard to improve the team at all.

Very hard to improve the first 11, but you have to wonder how a long term injury to either fullback or any of the front three would leave them... are there adequate replacements and/or a Plan B?

Losing Wijnaldum will really hurt Liverpool. According to a leading data company, he's the 5th most effective midfielder in Europe. Really good player.

They need to replace him if they lose him. Thiago is perhaps needed...

Reminiscent of Moyes at United who had read that winning teams often had more crosses than losing teams so he went for the strategy of making the most crosses thinking they would win as a result

I think that comes from assistant manager Steve Holland, former assistant to Conte.

He explains the system he used with Conte here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3sAWHFZXoc&ab_channel=TheCoaches%27Voice

Conte would often use a back 3 with Matic and Kante in front. Won the league.

They were horrendous. Something wasn't right.

It wasn't the idea to use a defensive midfield though, as that has proven to be effective, it was to do with the combination of players, or the some of the micro-tactics. I thought Kane was too far forwards, when he needed to play a more Firmino role, dropping deep to help the midfield progress the ball. No left-back hurt too. And the players were crap. But I don't think it was the lack of a midfield playmaker though...

I think that system, sacrificing all creativity from midfield, requires both full backs to contribute offensively, and the front three to click. Difficult to pull off at International level maybe, especially with a group of players who havent been together long.

I can see that. Relying on the individual brilliance of playmakers is more reliable than a team performance at International level I guess. There seemed to be few options on the ball due to lack of movement and chemistry. Was very United's Van Gaal at times.

Need to be Van Gaal's Holland. Acknowledge your personel weakness, tactically cover for it and rely on superstars to carry you. Which in fairness could involve a defensive duo in CM. What it wont involve is playing Trippier at LB. Just no excuse for that. It seemed to be because he knows the set piece routines.

I think going for a punty team suits me as a manager even though it will probably back fire. I've nailed most of my team but just the choice of 4 is difficult:

Option A: Dallas, Armstrong, Jota, Richarlison
Option B: Dier, Bissouma, Son, Nketiah

Both options have punts, Bissouma would be benched and I am risking a decent bench to help build value and allow some flexibility. Which option is more ridiculous?

If Doherty is value at 6m then Dier/Davies will almost certainly be value at 5m, because the former would require a good number of clean sheets.

True, Doherty does however (at least historically) offer a much higher attacking threat than those other two. Hence why he could be more value even at the extra 1.0M.

I'm currently sitting on 0.5M ITB which I can't really find much use for.
Considering upgrading my 4.5 goalkeeper for Ramsdale, not sure if SHU can replicate last season's form but I feel like he can rack up more saves and bonus points than Ryan or McCarthy.

Does it make sense, or am I better off holding on to the money?

Suppose I could also upgrade a 4.0 non-playing defender (currently on Buur) to one of Ayling/Dallas just to have a little more "depth" in the bench but i'm struggling to see the value in that when my other 4 defenders look to be 100% nailed anyway.

      A) ASM and Salah
      B) Son and Havertz

As it stands I think I'm bailing on Doherty unless Aurier leaves. Could be a massive mistake but imagine if he's benched gw1.. sales galore as people will have 0 patience with a benched premium defender. I'd rather avoid a situation that increases the risk of having to play WC early or take hits to fix the team in the very early game weeks

If Aurier stays it's pure wishful thinking that Doherty will play every game while Aurier plays cups only

Aurier could get Europa games but being in sale talk can’t be part of the main playing thoughts, Doherty however being the main transfer business you’d have thought that Mourinho had a big say in that and he’s part of his plans

To add further fuel to the fire... Doherty was awful for Ireland as part of a back 4. Spurs are still going to play 4 at the back and he will be the last line of defense on the right. There's a good chance he'll need time to adjust and won't be able to adapt to the new system to be as productive as he was for Wolves.

Without wanting to be too harsh, I think it's literally impossible to be worse than Aurier (defensively, anyway).
I'd rather play with 10 men.

Thinking of running with a BB GW1 / WC GW2 strategy. What do you think of this team?

I think you could lean in to the GW1 fixtures a bit heavier if you're wildcarding in GW2.

For example, I would downgrade elsewhere to have Antonio in place of Mitrovic (assuming there's no team news I've missed). Partly because it's a better fixture, partly because Antonio is the sort of player you could target that others thinking beyond GW1 will be ignoring.

        1. HollywoodXI
          • 9 Years

I debated that move (Antonio) but he hasn’t scored at all pre season and has been pushed back with Haller playing up front so it seems he may not the same player as we saw during project restart.

I'd consider fitting Alonso in there as a gw1 punt over Doherty. James withdrawn from England with an injury giving a likely start for Alonso while Chilwell is out. Could be a big differential if you're set on gw2 WC.

Not sure why you want Mitro v Arsenal. Too heavy on Sou for my liking too.

      A)
      McCarthy
      Alexander-Arnold / Van Dijk / Robertson / Walker-Peters
      Aubameyang / Son / Havertz
      Werner / Calvert-Levin / Adams

      B)
      McCarthy
      Alexander-Arnold / Van Dijk / Walker-Peters / Justin
      Aubameyang / Son / Salah
      Werner / Mitrovic / Adams

      So basically:
      Robertson / Havertz / Calvert-Levin
      vs
      Justin / Salah / Mitrovic
