The best forwards for FanTeam’s €1m Premier League Fantasy game

Sponsored by FanTeam

Fantasy Football Scout are partnering with FanTeam, Europe’s biggest daily Fantasy sports platform, in 2020/21.

There are thousands of prizes on offer in their season-long Premier League Fantasy game, with €1m guaranteed to be dished out.

Anyone who knows a thing or two about FPL will find it easy to play FanTeam‘s €1m game as the rules are strikingly similar – and instead of just pride or a lofty overall rank to play for, there is the chance of a huge cash windfall:

  • A starting XI built from a 15-man squad
  • One free transfer a week
  • Price changes
  • Captains and vice-captains
  • £100m budget
  • Maximum of three players per club
  • Two Wildcards a season
  • Very similar scoring system (three points for an assist, four for a clean sheet etc)

Entries cost just €25 per team, a payment you’ll make up by finishing in the top 5,659 places (see below).

We had previously given you a rundown on how to play the game, so now we turn our attention to the player price list.

Having already provided an analysis of the standout goalkeepers, the pick of the defenders and the ones to watch in midfield, we switch focus to options in attack.

HOW FORWARDS SCORE POINTS

Before we delve into the player pool, here’s how forwards can accrue points in FanTeam and how the scoring system differs from FPL:

FanTeamFPL
Playing up to 60 mins+1+1
Playing over 60 mins+2+2
Lasting the full match+1 (on top of the two points above)n/a
Clean sheets+1+1
Goals scored+5+5
Assists+3+3
Bonus+1/-1 “impact points” if a team is winning/losing when the player is on the pitch+1/2/3 based on Bonus Points System

There are ways to lose points such as own-goals, yellow cards and sendings off (we’ll refer you to our ‘How To…’ for more details) but the above table gives a flavour of where you can expect the positive points to arrive from in FanTeam.

Here is a selection of the highest-scoring forwards from FanTeam last season and their respective points in FPL:

PLAYERS TO CONSIDER

DEPENDABLE STARTERS – AND FINISHERS

As mentioned in the scoring system guide above, forwards (and midfielders) get an extra point for lasting the full game.

Over the course of the season, that could add up to a tidy haul.

Jamie Vardy (£10.5m) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) were big beneficiaries of this last season, having been nearly rotation-proof both during games and between them.

In 32 of Vardy’s 35 appearances, the Leicester City striker lasted the course.

Aubameyang, similarly, failed to last 90 minutes in just five of his 36 appearances.

Durability is obviously not the be-all and end-all but look at Sergio Aguero (£11.5m), for example: the Argentine only played a full match on eight occasions in an admittedly injury-ravaged 2019/20, leaving him some way adrift of the likes of Vardy and Aubameyang before goals are taken into account.

BEWARE THE BONUS

The Bonus Points System is the forward’s friend in FPL.

Five of the top six FPL assets for bonus points last season were classified as forwards, with Danny Ings (£8.5m) racking up more of them (40) than any other player.

With his positive and minus “impact points” cancelling each other out, Ings was subsequently not quite as deadly in FanTeam as he was in FPL – although he still hit the back of the net on 22 occasions, let’s not forget.

On the flip side, look at how much the winning bonus benefited Roberto Firmino (£9.0m), who finished 43 points behind Ings in FPL but two points ahead of him in FanTeam.

MARCUS RASHFORD AND TIMO WERNER

If the likes of Aguero and Aubameyang are too pricey, then Timo Werner (£10.0m) and Marcus Rashford (£10.0m) appeal a rung down on the premium ladder.

Rashford blanks in Gameweek 1, of course, but has a decent run of games to follow.

Not only cheaper than the aforementioned strikers, he’s also available for less money than Bruno Fernandes (£11.0m) and Anthony Martial (£10.5m).

While not being classified as a midfielder is a blow, look at his achievements in 2019/20 in registering a better points-per-match average than all bar Vardy in the forwards pool:

Player 2019/20 TeamFanTeam points per match
VardyLEI6.20

AgüeroMCI5.58
JiménezWOL4.95
JesusMCI4.71
FirminoLIV4.61
IngsSOU4.55
AbrahamCHE4.35
WoodBUR4.06

Granted he may have lost his share of penalties to Fernandes but he did win four of the six spot-kicks he converted, so would have gained assist points anyway.

We’ll point you in the direction of our dedicated Scout Report for more on Werner but 28 goals and eight assists in 34 Bundesliga appearances last season underscores his potential, while Chelsea face four teams who finished in the bottom half of the Premier League or came up from the Championship in the first five Gameweeks.

BUDGET OPTIONS

As in FPL, Michail Antonio has been priced up at an eye-catching £6.5m in FanTeam.

Ten goals and four assists from just 19 starts and five substitute appearances was impressive, with nine of those attacking returns arriving in West Ham’s post-restart fixtures.

Antonio’s season-long minutes-per-xGI (expected goal involvement) figure was also better than those of Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Kevin De Bruyne (£12.5m).

Perhaps the biggest downside is the tricky early-season fixture schedule but, that aside, he could represent excellent value in 2020/21 based on what we saw at the back-end of last season.

Che Adams (£5.5m) caught the eye after the summer restart, finding the back of the net on four occasions; Giroud and Antonio were the only two current FanTeam forwards who could better his goals-per-90-minutes average after lockdown.

It’s still a bit early to say for sure whether Adams will become a regular starter alongside Ings as Shane Long (£5.0m) had been preferred before coronavirus stopped play but there were positive signs in the summer and indeed in pre-season too.

Finally, if it’s pure, non-playing, budget-freeing bench fodder you’re after: look no further than Jay-Roy Grot and George Hirst, two assets who are available at £4.0m – that’s half a million lower than any forward in FPL.

Seeing LOTS of love McCarthy on here, i was on Ryan but couldnt work out who to go to.
Hojbjerg leaving an already poor Southampton defence, my thoughts was on Ryan due to 5 at the back, but people saying rotation and has put me off him.
Now upgraded to Ramsdale, but its 0.5 more and ive downgraded my 5mill defo to a 4.5, but feel better with the GK
    Whats people GK choice?

Agree on the Ryan part, think they will do better tha Southampton, but think Ramsdale should do alot better than both.
So 0.5 could be a good thing

      McCarthy.

That poor Southampton defense was before they got butchered by Leicester. After that, new keeper, new defense, new system. They've been a top half side defensively since restart. Let's not forget they kept a clean sheet against Manchester City. They are much improved.

McCarthy is very clearly the best keeper imo. The doubts that people see are from start of the year when he wasn't even playing and his lack of overall points because again... lack of overall play time until he replaced Gunn as first choice keeper. It's not close. McCarthy is the best 4.5m keeper and he even has better fixtures than Brighton. It's a very easy decision for me to go with McCarthy until the first WC. Can always reassess then. Aiming for like GW10 or so.

Even if it doesn't work out, I am sure that statistically this is the best decision. And I will not regret picking him over Ryan.

Yes... You evaluate players individually. The only time you don't do this is if you might exceed your Southampton team limit. I don't think I will so I'm totally comfortable having both.

Absolutely, those three look great value. Fixture runs are excellent too, GW3-10 and GW24-34 the standouts. It's very possible double Chelsea attack becomes template so you'll need a third attacker to benefit anyways.

Thanks for the write up Camzy, i do agree with you. I guess im more 2nd guessing myself. Do i think Brighton will be better this year? Yes i do.
Do i think losing Hojbjerg will be big for Southampton? Yes i do.
Dont get me wrong, i do think McCarthy is the better keeper, its just with a teams point of view defensively im worried about.

If Ramsdale was 4.5, he'd be your shout. And thats what im thinking, hes 0.5 more, but it makes me feel a hell of a lot better than picking 1 of those 2.............or Sheff Utd arent as good and i downgrade and save 0.5

Im finding it really tough picking a keeper this year, especially as this year im not rotating............im so tempted to rotate haha

I honestly think Ramsdale is a downgrade. Think Sheffield United will get second season syndrome. He's not Henderson. Their defensive stats end of last year at project restart were also poor.

Also my worry, but i do think Sheff Utds defense is more solid than both Brightons and Southamptons

All ive done is drop Egan to Vinagre and upgrade Ryan/McCarthy to Ramsdale

So not that much difference except ive got a Wolves def in (who may or may not play)

Okay, with Everton sorting out their midfield, their defence should improve, and they start with good fixtures. Pickford?

I like Everton defense a lot because of Allan + Doucoure providing ballwinning skills and great fixtures, can't argue with that.

Yeh, simply hadn't considered him until now. Started with treble-Toffee defence last season. First 2 games - clean sheets, then it all went south. I think Carlo will ensure they're much tighter now.

I was really considering Pickford, but was based on the fact this is kind of his last chance at Everton. Think Ancellotti made a few comments last seasonw ith his mistakes.
Im very tempted, good signings in midfield, issue is still the CBs though. Holgate out, Tomari might be in on loan

I'm hanging onto McCarthy myself, but increasingly reluctantly. I checked the results from last season, and the clean sheet v city (and another v Arsenal) are very much outliers. The handful of other CS were against the very weakest opponents. I'm looking to shake out 0.5 and upgrade to Ramsdale, I think. An alternative to avoid meeting half-decent attacks is to rotate with Meslier.

Interesting - from GW20-38 Brighton kept 5 CS and conceded 23, Saints kept 6 CS and conceded 23, however, for last 8 GW's, Brighton conceded 14 and Saints only 8, although they both had 3 CS. For me it comes down to which is likely the best 4.5 GK and 4.5 defender combo - McCArthy/Lamptey, or Ryan/KWP.

Fair point, but apart from the eye test, I'm going on what the Brighton fans say, TBH. They can't talk enough about Lamptey, and Potter looks like he's promoting a more attacking style.

Why though? If Southampton will keep more clean sheets statistically, then logically it makes more sense to just get both McCarthy and KWP. I don't understand this mentality of needing to pick inferior options in order to not double up...

I guess on the principle that historical data is a useful indicator but not a perfect predictor of the future. So it's a bit of a hedging strategy. The fact that a team starts poorly and ends great is no guarantee that it will start great the next season.

    McCarthy - Steer
    Egan - Justin - KWP - Targett - Mitchell
    Mane - Aubameyang - Son - J Rod - Bissouma
    Ings - Antonio - Wilson

2.5m in the bank for Antonio > Martial in gw 2
    Gw 3 - Aubameyang > Sterling
    GW 4 - WC

I’m a GW 4 WCer and thus going punts and all out for the juicy fixtures in the first 3 gws.

    Thoughts? 🙂

      Ballsy with no TAA.

Don't like Mane or JRod. Different for different's sake is not appealing to me.

If you're targeting the first 3 weeks why do you only have Son? Spurs have the best 3 game stretch of any team.

Yes. He is not going to start the first game most likely. And Everton are not a top side where a guy like James can instantly flourish. Much more confident in Havertz or Werner.

He signed less than a week before the first game. I just don't see it. He's also not been competing regularly before this. No regular minutes at the end of last season.

Him missing out on 60 minutes against Jose's Spurs should have very little impact on anyone's decision making. I've got all three so not really making a versus decision, but not sure how a statement like "Everton are not a top side where a guy like James can instantly flourish" is in any way valid. They've got Ancelotti, a very decent team on paper, and great fixtures. He's also a brilliant player for Colombia, so playing for an inferior team doesn't make sense. All these factors combine to make the perfect option to me. I can get the injury concern, but he's posts world class stats when he plays and he'll be just as good at Everton.

Fair enough. He's a wait and see for me. I'm unconvinced of his fitness and he's 29 now entering the most physically competitive league in the world.

        Always prefer Mane.

He is the more fitter player and more assist potential.

JRod also a class act under his favourite manager.

I don’t think TAA starts gw 1. No pre season for him. Tough gw 2 and 3. He then comes in on gw 4 WC.

That stuff on Mane is just untrue.

          Mane - 2753 mins
          Salah - 2884 mins

          Mane xA - 5.22
          Salah xA - 6.86.

You're talking from pure anecdotal experience. I had Mane most of last season too, but he was cheaper then. They're the same price now and it's super obvious that Salah is the superior pick statistically. I pick my players that way. If you want to punt, good luck to you.

4 of your starting attackers have uncertainty around them.

Havertz - new to the prem
Adams - not proven, a bit of good form but went 20+ games without scoring before that
ASM - no proven consistency playing for a very weak side
DCL - ended last season on terrible form

Too much on the bench. Coady + Ryan can free up 1.5m which would enable you to upgrade DCL to Ings. You are playing 3 at the back right?

      Of those, B.

Personally on Soucek because I think he offers a lot in GW1 while I bench my MUN players.

In your case, he's not in for Fernandes but in for a 4.5 defender, hence why I'd lean towards B

I've just had a big revelation!

Every single one of my drafts has had Salah + Auba.

But I've just realised I can get rid of:

    A) 12.0mid + 4.5str + Shaw in a 4-4-2

    for:

    B) Martial + Havertz + Mitchell in a 3-4-3

so I just need to decide who I'd rather captain GW1 between Auba and Salah and get rid of the other one...

Button has gone to West Brom.

Do we know if he's going to start ahead of Johnstone or will he be backup there too?

I asked the question a few days ago and most seemed to think he'd be number 2. Strange move though if so.

Do we get Ars/Ful lineups before GW1 lockout?

Considering the lockout happens 1 and a half hours before kick off (Hoorah for level playing field!) I'm thinking not.
