Former FPL world champion reveals tips and team for Gameweek 1

Former Fantasy Premier League world champion and four-time finisher in the top 7k Simon March gives us the lowdown on his thinking for the new campaign.

I am told that there are some important things going on in the world right now; a Brexit here, an election there, some protests, some riots, the odd wildfire and a global pandemic to name but a few. Unfortunately, I have little time for all that right now as the new Fantasy Premier League season and, as us Fantasy managers know, this is no time to get distracted.

Since nobody can realistically be expected to talk or think about anything else right now, I thought I’d use this article to take you through my thinking for my Gameweek 1 squad and my approach in general when it comes to kicking off this new FPL season.

Planning for a Unique Season

Every new season has its challenges but this one has more than most. Firstly, there’s the issue that a huge chunk of FPL’s best players won’t even play their opening match until Gameweek 2.

Then there’s the fixture intensity that the players will face, particularly those competing in Europe, and then there’s the aforementioned pandemic with the potential to decimate our options at any given moment through illness and quarantine.

It probably goes without saying that having a decent bench will be useful this season but having flexibility in your team may be even more important.

That means having players at a range of prices, across the pitch, who can be swapped out easily should the need arise.

It also means not over-investing in a single area of the squad or, more important, under-investing in others, leaving you with a dearth of replacement options when you need them.

A Balanced Squad

Should FPL managers sign Kane or Son for upcoming Bournemouth match?

If I do have any sort of overarching philosophy when it comes to FPL, it would go something like this; ‘I like to have a squad with lots of players who can each score in lots of different ways.’

So, in practice, that means that I like a good spread of different teams (ideally ones that attack and/or defend well) and at least nine starting players who have the potential to score consistently, in more than one way. That could be a midfielder on set-pieces, a forward on penalties or a defender with attacking threat.

When I’ve stuck to that plan, I’ve tended to do alright. When I’ve not done so well, it’s usually because I’ve tried, instead, to fit in too many premium options at the expense of a more balanced squad.

The effect of this is to put too much pressure on just a handful of players to deliver each Gameweek. Think, for example, a few seasons back when we were trying to fit in two 12.0 forwards in Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Sergio Aguero (£10.5m). It was great for a while, and then, as soon as they stopped scoring regularly, it wasn’t.

I also think that this is a good way in general to approach the unique challenges of this season. Circumstances are such, I believe, that too much reliance on too few players has the potential to backfire heavily whereas a broader spread of points makes us less susceptible to unforeseeable events.

Players Missing Gameweek 1

How De Bruyne and Sterling compare as FPL assets for 2020/21?

Regarding the players missing Gameweek 1, most notably those playing for Manchester United and Manchester City, my well-deliberated plan is, essentially, to ignore it.

While, were they to be playing, the likes of Bruno Fernandes (£10.5m) and Kevin De Bruyne (£11.5m) would probably be among the first names on my Gameweek 1 team sheet, I’m not approaching the season with any specific plan to bring them in in Gameweek 2.

Partly, this is because I think there are good alternatives to them (though I’ll no doubt want either or both at some point) but, also, I don’t think there will be as much of a rush to get these players in for Gameweek 2 as we might be currently anticipating.

Inevitably, at least one Gameweek 1 player will unexpectedly bag a brace or a hat-trick and, naturally, this player will become the priority bandwagon for Gameweek 2. As the saying goes; ‘If you want to make the FPL gods laugh, show them your transfer plans.’

My Gameweek 1 Squad

Without further ado, here is my squad for Gameweek 1. Of course, there will almost certainly be changes between now and the deadline, but this is the direction in which I’m currently heading.

“Everybody’s Gangsta the Week Before the Deadline”

Having now justified my team in writing, I can see I’m taking a few more risks than I normally might. I certainly wouldn’t rule out some last-minute changes. But I also have a feeling that this season might be the season to take some risks so I’m pretty happy with what I have for now. Roll on Saturday.

Simon is a former FPL world champion, claiming the coveted price in the 2014/15. But there is more to this man than one season of good fortune. Since 2009, Simon has finished in the top 7k four times, only ending up outside the world’s top 60k once in an 11-campaign career.

I've been thinking a lot about going in without TAA or any Def above 5.5.
The money saved gets you a 4.5def to rotate than 4.0and a much better upgrade elsewhere on the pitch . Considering points for the season doesn't seem to be a bad call as you're actually averaging with more overall points

Also requires you to rotate the defenders correctly. You'll occasionally bench a 4.5m CS by picking the wrong one.
TAA is set and forget, high ownership, and can hit 200 points for £7.5m.

Think you need at least one set and forget premium defender. The 4.5 defenders really don't look all that great in my opinion, I certainly wouldn't want to be fussing over rotating an army of them.

TAA is the best value of the game, he even scored more points than Sterling and Auba and he might outscore one of them again. Most undervalued player.

    Thoughts on the below strategy?

    McCarthy
    TAA - Robbo - Doherty - Davies - Justin
    Auba - Son - Havertz - (Bissouma) - (Reed)
    Werner - Ings - (Davis)

    0.5ITB.

Plan is Ings > Martial straight away with first transfer. Then save to GW3 and do Son & Havertz > KDB & Armstrong.

Then GW4 do Doherty > VVD for triple LIV defence.

This is if all goes well with no injuries and price rises!

Reckon Bats starts GW1? Their fixtures are great from GW5, and if he scores vs SOU he'll be a bandwagon.
Nketiah also in the mix. I'm just not 100% certain Adams starts all games.

Just for fun, I'm going to list my predictions for how I think this season will pan out, with some FPL implications thrown in. I don't have a track record or anything so I don't expect anyone to take this as gospel but any discussion is welcome.

      1. City --- I think City have had the best squad in the league for a number of years. A soft underbelly was exposed by injuries to Laporte and (to an extent) Aguero last season but they've strengthened again and there's no way they lose anywhere near to 9 games again. In a season where they lost 9 and finished 2nd by 18pts, City scored 102 goals and Ederson won the GG, so I'm going to make sure I have routes to get 3x City by GW10 at the latest for their fixture turn.

      2. Chelsea --- Yes they'll take time to gel but Chelsea on paper have the best attack in the league with significant improvements on an attack which was already creating a great number of BCs last season. Reinforcements in defence as well mean that realistically they're only a GK away from being serious title contenders imo. All of Werner, Havertz, Pulisic and Ziyech are underpriced if Chelsea hit any sort of form and I expect to have 3 of them throughout most of the season.

      3. Liverpool --- I think Liverpool will struggle this season because they've hit close to 100 points for 2 seasons in a row and historically it's been very difficult to maintain that intensity for a 3rd season, with no notable personnel changes. Their form has been patchy since about February, I don't see them suddenly hitting world-beater status again right from the off. Going to avoid double Pool defence for this reason (for now).

      4. MU --- I still don't think Ole is a very good manager but Bruno did something special last season and we're in a good spot, regardless of whether Sancho joins. Momentum and optimism means a lot for United as we've not had a lot of it since 2013, and I think that will be enough to edge a top-4 finish. Bruno and Martial are the key, with an eye on whether Rashford can kick on this season as well.

      5. Spurs --- Mourinho's second season usually sees them hit some heady heights but I fear he's lost a bit of his old magic, hence this prediction. However I think Spurs will have a solid season and if I see any sign of Chelsea, Pool or Utd struggling, routes to Kane/Son/Doherty are ready.

      6. Arsenal --- A lot has been made of Arteta's improvements to their frankly appalling squad but they finished 8th last season and 6th would be a step in the right direction this time, I just don't think they're good enough to overhaul any of the top 5 just yet.

      7. Everton --- A shiny new midfield under a managerial legend. If they click, they have the potential to break into the top 6. Or they could do an Everton, and finish around 15th. I fancy them to do well enough to finish just below the big boys, and James and DCL are on my watchlist in the 7-7.5 bracket.

      8. Southampton --- Latter half of last season, we saw a side going very much in the upwards direction. With players like KWP in defence and Adams in attack who are still improving, I see no reason why Saints can't continue to ascend in the table this season.

      9. Leeds --- Likely to be completely wrong but Leeds are a team with a clear system and identity, which usually counts for something in the PL. Wolves and SHU were well-drilled units who found success in their first season recently and I would be happy to punt on Leeds being in the same vein.

      10. Wolves --- Similar to Liverpool, I see Wolves as a team that have peaked with their consecutive 7th place finishes. They've obviously still got a really strong core and no European distractions this season but I feel like something weird is happening at the club to go into the new season with potentially no established full-backs, and sooner rather than later someone's going to need to replace 34yo Moutinho.

      11. Leicester --- I feel like Leicester massively over-achieved last season because I don't really rate Brendan as a manager and last season a lot of responsibility was on Vardy who will also be 34 soon, and as a team Leicester don't really have a plan B for when Vardy can't party any more. I see them being on the wrong end of some upsets this season.

      12. Burnley --- Solid season based on a solid defence, but they are an unspectacular team that I don't see breaking into the top 10 this season considering the strengths of others.

      13. Sheffield United --- Been saying for some time that I expect SHU to struggle in their second season as teams get more used to their system and style of play. They already began to struggle in the restart period and I think that will continue this season. Should still have enough to beat the minnows though.

      14. Newcastle --- Fancied them to get relegated last year, and again about a month ago, but they've had a great transfer window and I really think Wilson Fraser and co will improve the squad. They might be whipping boys whilst Dubravka is injured but should tighten up later on.

      15. Brighton --- Idk they're weird, Potter likes to play attacking football but they don't have any good attackers. White and Lamptey are good additions in defence though.

      16. Villa --- Poor squad, but Grealish is still quality and if Watkins can get a 10 goal season then I see Villa staying up. Hopefully some price falls enable Grealish for around 6.6 once the nice fixtures come around.

      17. WBA --- I actually quite like Slaven Bilic and fancy him to pull off some upsets here, especially if Pereira is as good as people make out. Squad isn't strong enough to be consistent though and I place them 17th not on their own merit but because I expect the bottom 3 to be worse.

      18. Crystal Palace --- Looked really bad for quite some time. Injuries in defence and tough fixtures suggest they might get off to a bad start, then with no goalscorers and low morale it will be hard to turn things around. Roy is vastly experienced but also very old, might be time to retire unfortunately.

      19. West Ham --- Season's not started and already giving out signs of a club in disarray. Defence seems to be dreadful, might not keep hold of Rice, and Antonio seems to be out of his purple patch. Also Moyes.

      20. Fulham --- They're just not very good. Sorry.

TLDR --- Just bring on the season

Often times comments like this don't get taken seriously because there's no explanation to back up the choices, which was why I wrote that wall of text. For example, I'd be interested to know why you think Spurs will struggle, and why you think Arsenal have it in them to get top 4 (above Liverpool as well!)

I think Spurs will struggle for the reason you gave. Jose has lost it. Plus, I'm not convinced Kane actually greatly improves the team. It's a burden to have to play him in some ways. Also, I support Arsenal.

Very good. I think the fact that Liverpool won the title by such a large margin last season has enabled City assets to be mostly underpriced and Pool assets to be mostly overpriced this season. If we feel City are going to overthrow them then jumping in early could be gold

Thanks. Race for top 4 should be quite close, I think Spurs and Arsenal will be there or thereabouts. Therefore in my mind having Liverpool still above them and MU was actually a conservative estimate, unlike some of the recent champions whose next season was a complete dog's dinner (United under Moyes, Chelsea, Leicester). So yeah maybe liverpool don't fade so much. But generally in football it's quite hard to plateau and if you're not on the way up then you're on the way down, and Liverpool certainly aren't on the way up. Just trying to convince myself to translate that into FPL moves right now by removing Salah and Robertson from my team xD

Haha, hard to argue with WBA going down tbh. What I will say though is that people have the impression that WBA aren't a fashionable team, they have a reputation of being a poor team playing poor football and I'm not sure this WBA side fit the bill. Doesn't mean they're any good, but they could cause a few surprises along the way

I read your post...sounds like you want max from ManU....? Could work...could backfire....Wk1 is a lottery. Dont get bogged down with trsfrs before the game even starts. Things never work out as planned.

I think its best to play safe. Then take it from there.

I don't want max from utd. I just look at them separately and they are best values each one comparing to other options. Specially martial and fernandez.
Personally like rashford and can see him matching mane and sterling points.
I mean, each of them are great options. So collection of some goods will be bad?

Just changed my approach and now I've got zero transfers planned. Feels miles better that way, lots of flexibility.

Final draft. I'm finally happy with this. Wildcarding in GW2. Thoughts?

      Johnstone
      TAA Robbo VVD Davies
      Auba (C) Alli Zaha ASM
      Werner Kane

      Subs: Mitchell, Bissouma, Davis

If Pool ship one goal then that one week punt won’t pay off, I’d also be watching from behind the sofa without Salah

Liverpool win 3-1, not an amazingly unlikely score line, you’ll have a shocking GW and your wildcard will have been wasted. Don’t like it imo

      RMT please?

      McCarthy
      TAA Davies Justin
      Salah Auba Son ASM
      Werner Mitro Wilson

      Steer, KWP, Mitchell, Gordon

      1.0 ITB - thinking Bruno/Martial in for Salah/Wilson for GW2

I’d prefer to have him in my team but I am planning to be able to get Bruno in GW2 in case Rashford isn’t fully fit. Can still get Rashford then if I want

      Soucek vs Podence?

price/value not a concern (this is for a draft league)

      really appreciate any thoughts!

Soucek. Will be more consistent. Podence will be in and out of the team.

      McCarthy
      TAA Justin KWP
      Salah(c) Auba Son ASM
      Werner Mitro Adams
      (4.0, Shaw 4.0, 4.5)
1.5ITB to do Son->Bruno next week

Thoughts on my team please guys? 🙂 I have tried to stay away from this sites and other forms of FPL media to try got get allured into a template but it feels there really is a small group of players to pick from due to the blanks.

It is not true that there are a small group of players.

I don't like the Son > Bruno 1.5m ITB plan. Son is a superior pick and not a one week punt.

TAA, Salah, Auba and Werner are all pretty much a given and the cheapies to make up that there is a limited of viable options in each position of them.

Spurs’ fixture list is putting me off them

About as template as it gets - great side.

Rashford vs Martial? Dont see many backing Rashford, now 1 more point for goal, cs potential.
My current plan is Son to Rashford, later Salah to Bruno. Auba to KDB/Sterling but I might save transfer next week since Son might do damage and see one match from ManU and ManC before decide. And yes, all the other matches/players as well!
      What is your plan?

I thought it was strange too, Rashford looks like a way more attractive proposition as a mid

Martial looked better post lockdown in my opinion. If he continues that form I can see him being one of the top scorers. I think depending on my final team, my plan is Ings/Werner to Martial or could do Son to Rashford for GW2. Will then either do Auba to KDB or might use my WC.

Who’s with me on Trent and Robbo...?

Just owning Trent alone is not enough imo, because virtually everyone has him.

It also makes me view my team more as a 1-6-3 than a 3-4-3, with the way Pool play...
