Captain Sensible

Who are the best Captain options for FPL Blank Gameweek 1?

Jan Sienkiewicz was the king of the Fantasy Premier League captaincy in 2019/20, scoring a whopping 657 points from the armband, the second-highest in the whole world. We asked him to help out with the captaincy debate ahead of the new campaign’s Gameweek 1 deadline.

Quite an unprecedented 2020/2021 pre-season is drawing to a close, as we are eagerly waiting for the new FPL campaign to start. Hundreds of drafts, multiple formations, Wildcard strategies and planning early transfers; we have all been there and, in fact, we are all living in this world right now.

There is one common denominator in our efforts; trying to find the best captain. Getting the right skipper is usually a crucial component to having a successful season and Fantasy managers are looking to start the campaign strongly with the right choice. Let’s evaluate the options available for us in Gameweek 1.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area, only those with a valid subscription can access it in full.

Captain Poll

Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12.0m)  tops the Fantasy Football Scout captain poll with 53.3% of votes, as he faces a newly-promoted Fulham side in Gameweek 1.

The Arsenal striker, who has been reclassified as a midfielder for this season’s edition of FPL, is currently owned by 44.1% of Fantasy managers – which is more than the combined ownership of Sadio Mané (£12.0m, 13.3% ownership) and Mohammed Salah (£12.0m, 29.8% ownership).

The Gabonese international starred in Arsenal’s Community Shield victory two weeks ago (scoring a long-distance goal in a 1-1 draw that the Gunners won on penalties) and then netted twice in a 3-2 friendly defeat to Aston Villa behind-closed-doors.

Aubameyang’s great form is accompanied by a favourable Gameweek 1 fixture too, as Fulham’s defensive vulnerabilities are still fresh in people’s minds from the 2018/19 campaign. The Cottagers conceded a league-high of 81 goals the last time they were in the top flight, which included nine goals over two games against Arsenal (5-1 and 4-1 defeats).

Metrics

The second most popular pick for the armband among the Fantasy Football Scout users this week is Salah (25.6%). Considering that the runaway 2019/20 champions are hosting newly-promoted Leeds United, and Manchester City and Manchester United are without a fixture, it seems to some extent surprising that the Fantasy-proven Egyptian midfielder is struggling to attract more interest for the armband.

Even more of a surprise, Mané sits at third in the poll with only 3.9% of votes. The Senegalese winger, who scored 18 goals and provided 10 Fantasy assists last season, showed glimpses of class in pre-season and will be looking to improve on his impressive home record against newly-promoted opposition on Saturday.

Behind the podium we can find Chelsea’s new striker Timo Werner (£9.5m, 3.5% of votes), Liverpool’s defender Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m, 2.1%), as well as Tottenham Hotspur assets – Son Heung-min (£9.5, 2.1%) and Harry Kane (£10.5m, 1.8%).

Based on the poll, the main decision managers will have to make regarding captaincy will involve comparing Aubameyang with Salah. We will therefore mostly focus on the Liverpool and Arsenal options.

Adams is a risk for sure, but his recent stats, form and good fixtures imply that he could be have a good start to season at least. Mitro is only proven in the championship. He's got no pace, and no skill, however, he does have a knack of being in the right place at the right time. He won't find those same spaces in the premier ship either. I guess it's more personal for me as I had him last time in the prem and his long run of blanks was annoying, plus he's in a less creative Fulham side. Either way, good luck to ya!

        Thanks for the reply.

The options aren't that huge with 7.5 / 7.0 / 5.0 / 4.5 / 4.5 in the back. As I think Robbo one of the best values of the game this year he is also easy to sell when I need to move funds up top.

ASM I agree can be wack and have a terribly high % ownership, but the 5.5 market isnt awesome either. I can found 0,5 and get Pererira from WBA.

I have a bit of faith in Adams, its a toincoss between him and Mitro, but I this team needs a little differ.

          Adams minutes per game after the restart: 8, 0, 15, 69, 69, 63, 45, 24, 84.
He also averaged 2.6 points per game last season.
I'd definitely go for Mitrovic out of the two.

What's the general consensus on Havertz here? A slight risk for GW1 being younger and new to the league, or worth the gamble?

I have Son currently, but Havertz would also be an easy switch to Pulisic (or Ziyech) when fit, so it's tempting to bring him in.

Too risky in my opinion, might get limited minutes or play in the midfield 3 in a 4-3-3 formation.

A risk for sure, but one in I'm taking. If pulisic was guaranteed I'd start with him. I just don't rate spurs attacking options under Jose, it's a personal thing for me. Havertz should be up to speed by gw 3(I hope) so anyone else is a transfer waiting to happen

...but what about the Amazon documentary!? Ha just kidding, I agree and think we'll see Pulisic come on as a substitute as he's already back in training too. If Havertz doesn't start well, it's an easy switch.

Luckily I didn't watch, or else I'd have Alli and dier I'm sure. Haha. I always seem to get either Alli or son the weeks when the other one hauls. And I had son for 2 red cards. Guess I've been unlucky!. Think its mourinho's defensive tendencies that turn me off. His last year at man utd was painful to watch and it won't be long before, "Harry Kane, best CDM in the game" comments come flooding back. As I've not got any spurs assests, you'll be fine if you pick them!

If Oliver Burke plays up top he is exciting. Wilder has said he wants to help him kick off from the start this time. Worth 4,5? Or will he be behind the other 4 strikers in the pecking order you think? None of them was too impressive last year though.

I already have Mccarthy so don’t want a Southampton defender. Jota is too much of a rotation risk and likely to get limired minutes even when he starts. I don’t hate Adams but prefer Antonio between the two.

So thanks for the suggestion but not for me.

Jota is starting for the best national team in the world, so can't see him being dropped any time soon if he can find some form. At 6,5 as a MID he looks like a bargain IMO. Nice stats too

Can see why you don't wanna double up on their defence. I am going for it though. Bertrand have been underperforming his xGI for 2 seasons now, so could see him find that 4 goals + 6 assists kind of season once again.

    Few burning questions...

who you rather Spurs defence (Davies) or attack (Son/Alli)?
with Armstrong picking up an injury its easy to look elsewhere - who are you main 5.5m mids? Quite like Doucoure this season. There's obv ASM and Saka as well
Newcastle - ASM v Wilson. Could Wilson be on penalties when Ritchie isn't playing?
Best way to have Auba + Salah at the start and have a placeholder for Chelsea mid like Son

      • 7 Years

      1) Defence
      2) ASM

      4) Difficult to have a placeholder in midfield with those two. Either have Mount or Werner

Best to go with highest or lowest owned fodders to avoid price drop?

    GK 4.0 and forward 4.5

Soo I try again, got a lot of praise for the first team I posted but have changed things around a lot since of course.... How you like it this time?

    McCarthy (Nyland)

    Trent Robbo Bertrand Mitchell (Ayling)
    Auba Havertz Jota Burke (Bruno)
    Werner Calwert-Lewin (Brewster)

This article is really interesting. Thinking I might go Mane and Salah (c) instead of Auba (c) and Salah.

Then downgrade Mane to Bruno for GW2.

I've done a team for my son (he's 8 months old), essentially its say 5 players the same as my own squad and the remainder alternatives.

How do you think this looks:

    Mcarthy
    TAA Doherty KWP
    Salah Aubameyang Alli ASM
    Vardy DCL Mitrovic

    Nyland Vinagre Mitchell Bissouma

    Thanks guys
