Captain Sensible

Who are the best Captain options for FPL Blank Gameweek 1?

Jan Sienkiewicz was the king of the Fantasy Premier League captaincy in 2019/20, scoring a whopping 657 points from the armband, the second-highest in the whole world. We asked him to help out with the captaincy debate ahead of the new campaign’s Gameweek 1 deadline.

Quite an unprecedented 2020/2021 pre-season is drawing to a close, as we are eagerly waiting for the new FPL campaign to start. Hundreds of drafts, multiple formations, Wildcard strategies and planning early transfers; we have all been there and, in fact, we are all living in this world right now.

There is one common denominator in our efforts; trying to find the best captain. Getting the right skipper is usually a crucial component to having a successful season and Fantasy managers are looking to start the campaign strongly with the right choice. Let’s evaluate the options available for us in Gameweek 1.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area, only those with a valid subscription can access it in full.

Captain Poll

Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12.0m)  tops the Fantasy Football Scout captain poll with 53.3% of votes, as he faces a newly-promoted Fulham side in Gameweek 1.

The Arsenal striker, who has been reclassified as a midfielder for this season’s edition of FPL, is currently owned by 44.1% of Fantasy managers – which is more than the combined ownership of Sadio Mané (£12.0m, 13.3% ownership) and Mohammed Salah (£12.0m, 29.8% ownership).

The Gabonese international starred in Arsenal’s Community Shield victory two weeks ago (scoring a long-distance goal in a 1-1 draw that the Gunners won on penalties) and then netted twice in a 3-2 friendly defeat to Aston Villa behind-closed-doors.

Aubameyang’s great form is accompanied by a favourable Gameweek 1 fixture too, as Fulham’s defensive vulnerabilities are still fresh in people’s minds from the 2018/19 campaign. The Cottagers conceded a league-high of 81 goals the last time they were in the top flight, which included nine goals over two games against Arsenal (5-1 and 4-1 defeats).

Metrics

The second most popular pick for the armband among the Fantasy Football Scout users this week is Salah (25.6%). Considering that the runaway 2019/20 champions are hosting newly-promoted Leeds United, and Manchester City and Manchester United are without a fixture, it seems to some extent surprising that the Fantasy-proven Egyptian midfielder is struggling to attract more interest for the armband.

Even more of a surprise, Mané sits at third in the poll with only 3.9% of votes. The Senegalese winger, who scored 18 goals and provided 10 Fantasy assists last season, showed glimpses of class in pre-season and will be looking to improve on his impressive home record against newly-promoted opposition on Saturday.

Behind the podium we can find Chelsea’s new striker Timo Werner (£9.5m, 3.5% of votes), Liverpool’s defender Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m, 2.1%), as well as Tottenham Hotspur assets – Son Heung-min (£9.5, 2.1%) and Harry Kane (£10.5m, 1.8%).

Based on the poll, the main decision managers will have to make regarding captaincy will involve comparing Aubameyang with Salah. We will therefore mostly focus on the Liverpool and Arsenal options.

Is James Rodríguez a good punt at his price from the start - got some great fixtures from GW2. Will he be nailed to start GW1
I like the look of this mid 5
Salah Auba Alli Barnes James Rodríguez

      Agree.
How sure are you in Barnes?

Not keen on Barnes either. James a good punt but to punt on James+Alli+Barnes seems a step too far

Yeah I am wondering if all 3 is too much.
My other main draft has Adams up front and a 4.5 mid for James.
It leaves more than enough cash for Barnes to Pulisic or Havertz in GW3 and going with a 442 instead

James a better punt than Barnes imo. And easier to fix later on.
If you really want a Chelsea mid, Barnes to a 4.5 and plan to find money elsewhere. If James doesn't kick off, then you'll be set up for James-Chelsea anyway.

I'm an Everton fan - can't resist. I am going with

      Auba / Mane / Rodriguez / Barnes / Soucek

Yeah it's a gamble but it has to be fun as well.

Rodriguez could be great, fixtures, proven quality with this manager, but also could be a Moise Kean, Walcott or Siggy. Who knows at this stage?

I like the look of Barnes he seems attacking, takes a lot of shots. At 7 mill or under it's all at least a bit of a punt, isn't it?

Why I might punt on these 3 is apart from Auba they are the only ones on a possible out list for the first 3 weeks. So not the end of the world if they fail and getting Che mid would be easy.

I also got James. I know the risks but still want to see what he's about.

I have the same approach also for WBA's Pereira, just loved the youtube highlights - and for 6m only! 😀

I feel it wont be too hard to move this around if needed, eg. for Chelsea, Wolves, Newcastle or West Ham mids. Or to Foden, Greenwood, Grealish. So I like the punts and the options as well 🙂

How much money is too much ITB if you're trying to stay flexible?
I downgraded Taylor to Douglas to have 1m itb but first transfer would be Salah->Bruno, leaving me with 2.5m itb on gw2 (unless I take a hit to spend that money elsewhere).
    Should I
    a) stay on Douglas for a cheap punt and flexibility
    b) revert to Taylor +.5 itb or
    c) upgrade def and/or mid and leave 0 itb

Here is what the teams looks like.

    McCarthy (4.0)
    TAA-Dier-KWP(Douglas-Mitchell)
    Auba-Salah-Son-7.5-5.0 (or 8.0-4.5)
    Werner-6.0 (Davis)

"How much money is too much ITB if you're trying to stay flexible?"

This year with the late entry of Mancs and the transfer window still open, it's more advisable than ever to keep money itb. How much? No limit!

The egos that some of the self anointed 'FPL gurus' hold is truly outrageous. The amount of comments you can find, especially on HT's which detract from the whole purpose of the post just to have a dig is beyond me. Whilst I acknowledge that the vast majority of people want to help each other and contribute to the community, there seems to be some who simply don't.

Perhaps time to gather some perspective?

Very weak mid and no Trent could see you really suffer. I’d seriously look at losing Traore. That said I’m not planning on making transfers and weakening my team the week before. I’ll get City/United assets if there’s a reason to lose my Chelsea/Spurs assets and not just because. I’m going to try the upside chatting approach this year so I’m sure there’ll be In at the right times. Either way, good luck!

          Here there 'Jia',

Couple of points: you have 2 midfielders playing for truly terrible teams - I'd move off at least one, if I were you.
Secondly, I'd shave off some money from the GK combo. Spend max 9m - either 5.0/4.0 or 4.5/4.5.

    B) Play Mane and Antonio and take a -4 (to bring in Bruno and Martial)

    Which is a better option:

    A) Start Barnes in GW 1 with 1.5 itb
    B) Get Havertz and have 0itb

I am inclined towards A because that allows Ings>Martial or Son>Rashford/Bruno, or even Barnes could become another mid up to 8.5 if he doesn't look appealing.

KWP (just because of the double up) and maybe keep 1.0 itb and start the season with Barnes? I don't think 5 strong defenders is needed.

Is Robertson worth the extra 0.5m over VVD?

They seem to match each other by the end of the season, while I agree that Robbo is more exciting to watch.

Which player would you go for to double-up with TAA?

    1. Pukki Blinders

If you plan to keep long term then VVD. Short term Robbo.

I would keep them for the season...dont see any better value in 6.5-7.0m price bracket unless a certain Ings emerges which I would miss anyway

As all my players are active and my 4.5 mid is likely to occupy last place on the bench, I feel like I can afford a punt. I'm on Ollie Burke, now a Blade. Prob won't ever start a game, but there's an outside chance the gaffer will make him a lone striker and turn him into Lord Mk. II

    Morning all,

I have been on and off the site numerous times over the past 11 years and whilst I have been very impressed with the staggering amount of new content the past few years, iId like to rekindle some of the communication between the old school registrants of the site.

To this end, I have set up an FPL FSS Old School Classic league for registrants who have been on the site for 10 years +.

I thought this would be a fun way to see which old school lurkers are out there and to try and tempt them to come out of the woodwork.

Who of the FPL FSS stalwarts would like to pit themselves against age-old friends and foes?

This isn't supposed to be inclusive and one day the new school will be eligible!
