Reigning India FPL champion reveals strategy and team for new season

Lateriser, who finished 30th in the world last season, discusses “overthinking” in FPL and reveals his Gameweek 1 team.

This time of the season is a delicate time. I don’t really tinker too much but while I am reading articles and assembling information, the subconscious is working overtime in the background debating every minute decision in our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) team while the conscious is pretending hard to remain interested in the conversation on the dinner table.

I am generally a very decisive manager and normally after about two to three sessions of spaced-out, focused tinkering, I arrive at my team. Just before recording Episode 2 of our new Podcast, The FPL Wire (also available on all podcast platforms), I had one of these long tinkering sessions on Sunday night and the outcome was a team I was really happy with (it involved me not having a single Liverpool attacker but more on that later).

Monday and Tuesday passed and I was convinced that I was there. I even mentioned on the pod that I was feeling good about my team since I was so close to the final piece. Then came yesterday and I happened to watch France’s highlights versus Croatia and watching Anthony Martial (£9.0m) reminded me how much I love this player and that simply put I need him in my team.

When I referred back to my post-season notes that I had scribbled in my little notebook, I found “You Love Tony Gloves” scribbled in there. I hadn’t planned for Tony (except for a lazy afterthought that I’ll do Timo Werner (£9.5m) to Martial in Gameweek 2) until then and had Bruno Fernandes (£10.5m) sitting on my bench Gameweek 1. Panic set in because I know I’m not going be happy with my team until I get him.

Gameweek 32+ Scout Picks focus on Arsenal, Wolves and Man United

This led to me immediately logging on to the FPL website and just not being happy with all the compromises. Suddenly, it all feels imperfect. This happens to most of us (we overthink way too much). Our FPL decisions (at least for me) are constantly evolving in our heads and while there’s panic at first when something strikes you, all you really need to do is put on some earphones, dig in some more (statistics + highlights + articles) and you’ll find that in some time you’ll arrive at a place you’re happy with.

The key to all of this is the earphones. You need to be away from all the noise when you’re ‘Beautiful Minding’ (as my friend Walsh likes to call it) your team and after some time and thought you’ll get there. Yes there will be some sacrifices along the way but mentally you’ll have debated all sorts of decisions and as long as there is reasoning to the team you’re building, you should be okay.

After all of this, I really think to myself: why do we even overthink? The chances of us getting Gameweek 1 right are so slim. But then I see Mark Sutherns, who is possibly the best instinctive FPL manager I know, talking on his new fabulous show “FPL BlackBox” about having a set of rules and filters for his decisions.

In my head, I just went, “Mark, don’t do it because of one rubbish season. You were careless last season. Your strength is your instinct and filtering will just stop you from being naturally instinctive and aggressive”. I might have even DMed him the same. Seems like we’re all just wired to overthink. It’s probably me doing just that with my decision to not go with a Liverpool attacker.

Let me take you through that decision and some other relevant ones while building my Gameweek 1 team.

The elephant in the room is that as of today, I plan on starting without Mohamed Salah (£12.0m) or a Liverpool attacker for that matter. There are two primary reasons for this.

What is FPL Upside Chasing and how can I implement it in 2020/21?

    Best forward under 7.0mil?

Think Calvert-Lewin could be a great asset with (WBA),(cry),(BRI) after GW1 (tot) where he could also possibly get a goal. Everton seems to be overlooked and could be a strong side this season with all their signings.

I've just put him in. Think he could offer great value if he plays like he did before the restart - particularly with the improvements Everton have made. It's a gamble, but at that price nothing is very certain; Mitrovic is OK, Wilson could do well, Bats at Palace has potential, but I think DCL could have more upside than any of them. Ancelotti knows what he's doing.

DCL, Richarlison or Rodriguez could all do very, but the fact that we don't know who the primary scorer will be puts me off. Start of the season I like to pick players who are either the no 1 or no 2 obvious attacking choice from their team.

With that being said, isnt that the same for even Chelsea? Who's scoring the goals there. We have no idea how Lamps will play Havertz / Ziyech yet..
You'd think at Everton James & DCL will get the most out of each other.

I cant look past the double up with Robbo/TAA, TAA speaks for himself, but I also feel like Robbo will outscore pretty much most players up to 9mill mark.

Was looking at downgrading Robbo to free up funds, but I see Alli at 8, and think Robbo will outscore him, so better downgrading Alli.

    Am i wrong?

you missing the other side of the coin which is the player you pair them with.

In your example, its not Robbo vs Alli, its Robbo+ASM (say) vs KWP+Alli

The point is that Alli will likely heavily outscore the option at 5.5m by as much as Robbo outscores KWP. There is value in terms of points per million at all price points in defence, not just at the high end.

I agree. Also, there is the aspect of picking the fixtures where you play your defenders. If you're doubling up on Liverpool at the back, not only do you then play those two every GW regardless of clean sheet odds, you're presumably going to have a couple of 4.0 defenders to be able to afford two premiums, which means your 3rd defender gets played week in week out regardless of opposition too. Plus you'll have budget mids and fwds instead of cheaper defenders, and it might be less clear when to play them as you don't have the benefit of targeting clean sheets.

        1. Andy_Social
          • 11 Years

The solution to that is avoiding undermining your nailed premiums with 4m dross. I've got those 2, 2x5m and 4.5 Vinagre. There's no weak defender there.

    6. Sgt Frank Drebin
      • 7 Years

Yup that's my thinking too. Quite surprised a double up wasn't popular last season but that's probably because LFC didn't start well last year (CS wise) and many sold either Robbo or VVD for the bandwagon that appeared. I wonder if that will be the case this season too if LFC doesn't get any CS in first 3 GWs. It will be a real patience test...

Is the key point here not combos?
      Ie
      Robbo + 6m mid = 180 + 120 Points
      5m def + 8m mid = 140 + 180 points

I’ve just plucked these numbers from thin air but that’s the type of comparison u need to make to see is it actually beneficial

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years
        3 years, 6 months ago

I think if the Liverpool defence hadn't gone without Alisson and Gomez for weeks, they'd have had more CS. So long as they're fit, I'm confident in holding the pair for the duration.

It’s a question Salah or gamble going without Salah, affect the team structure.

    What’s your take on this?

    Mitro, Werner (brewster)

The template seems to be reasonably settled on

    4.5 - 4
    7.5 - 5 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4
    12 - xx - 9 - xx - 4.5
    9.5 - xx - 6

This chews up three quarters of the budget - with 25mln left for the remaining spots. Obviously some template choices can be shaved by 0.5-1m here and there but this is the most popular configuration amongst RMTs. I think the first thing to point out here is this is not a premium defence strategy - and its not a 4 at the back strategy either with 2 * 4.5s.

If we accept that this is the template structure with most of the positions more or less locked then there are 3 main derivatives. Furthermore, all RMTs and combinations are essentially variations involving 2 key decisions. The first involving Mo/NoMo and if the latter, whether the additional premium sits in midfield or upfront.

The first main decision is Mo or No Salah. With Mo there is 13mln left for 2 spots, which more or less pushes you into 2 budget (6-7m) type players rather than another 8.5m player. You can do 8.5 + 4.5 but either you are banking on a vague hope that brewster gets a loan move, or you are opting for a 2nd 4.5 mid and playing 4 at the back. Neither are ideal, so the Salah template generally avoids this and opts for something like ASM + Wilson/DCL (and spending the change in defence, making 4 at the back a possible outcome).

If you choose no Salah, then first you are probably on (although not necessarily) the Bruno benching strategy so the budget is 14.5. That affords the opportunity to draft in another 8.5-10.5m player. So the next key decision (for those who choose NoMo) and branching point is whether you spend upfront (Martial/Ings/Jimmy) or in midfield (Kai, Puli). In either case you'll be able to pair them with a 6m ish player and not be forced into 4 at the back. There is a strange half way house involving Everton players which is DCL & James, both of which live in that no mans land between budget and premium.

Which variant are you going for? And what is the rationale behind your decision?
    A) Salah
    B) NoMo + premium mid
    C) NoMo + premium fwd
    D) Im going off-piste (e.g. premium defender strategy), the template is for chumps

Spot on, see my post just above. Leaning towards A, which will give me this:

      Auba, Alli, Salah, Havertz, ASM
      Mitro, Werner

Will make it easier to swap to other premium mids, but will require 2 FTs to upgrade forward line

      Bruno strategy is interesting.

fwiw, i started on A, quickly flipped to C stayed there for a long time, and just recently moved to B.

I like the pool of 6-6.5s that has suddenly emerged upfront i think it gives excellent prospects for B (and actually to some extent A as well). B is totally viable because there is a large pool of 8.5-9.5 fwds to choose from as well, but i suspect it will come to the fore later on in the season once we've banked some money trading the cheaper options.
