Reigning India FPL champion reveals strategy and team for new season

Lateriser, who finished 30th in the world last season, discusses “overthinking” in FPL and reveals his Gameweek 1 team.

This time of the season is a delicate time. I don’t really tinker too much but while I am reading articles and assembling information, the subconscious is working overtime in the background debating every minute decision in our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) team while the conscious is pretending hard to remain interested in the conversation on the dinner table.

I am generally a very decisive manager and normally after about two to three sessions of spaced-out, focused tinkering, I arrive at my team. Just before recording Episode 2 of our new Podcast, The FPL Wire (also available on all podcast platforms), I had one of these long tinkering sessions on Sunday night and the outcome was a team I was really happy with (it involved me not having a single Liverpool attacker but more on that later).

Monday and Tuesday passed and I was convinced that I was there. I even mentioned on the pod that I was feeling good about my team since I was so close to the final piece. Then came yesterday and I happened to watch France’s highlights versus Croatia and watching Anthony Martial (£9.0m) reminded me how much I love this player and that simply put I need him in my team.

When I referred back to my post-season notes that I had scribbled in my little notebook, I found “You Love Tony Gloves” scribbled in there. I hadn’t planned for Tony (except for a lazy afterthought that I’ll do Timo Werner (£9.5m) to Martial in Gameweek 2) until then and had Bruno Fernandes (£10.5m) sitting on my bench Gameweek 1. Panic set in because I know I’m not going be happy with my team until I get him.

Gameweek 32+ Scout Picks focus on Arsenal, Wolves and Man United

This led to me immediately logging on to the FPL website and just not being happy with all the compromises. Suddenly, it all feels imperfect. This happens to most of us (we overthink way too much). Our FPL decisions (at least for me) are constantly evolving in our heads and while there’s panic at first when something strikes you, all you really need to do is put on some earphones, dig in some more (statistics + highlights + articles) and you’ll find that in some time you’ll arrive at a place you’re happy with.

The key to all of this is the earphones. You need to be away from all the noise when you’re ‘Beautiful Minding’ (as my friend Walsh likes to call it) your team and after some time and thought you’ll get there. Yes there will be some sacrifices along the way but mentally you’ll have debated all sorts of decisions and as long as there is reasoning to the team you’re building, you should be okay.

After all of this, I really think to myself: why do we even overthink? The chances of us getting Gameweek 1 right are so slim. But then I see Mark Sutherns, who is possibly the best instinctive FPL manager I know, talking on his new fabulous show “FPL BlackBox” about having a set of rules and filters for his decisions.

In my head, I just went, “Mark, don’t do it because of one rubbish season. You were careless last season. Your strength is your instinct and filtering will just stop you from being naturally instinctive and aggressive”. I might have even DMed him the same. Seems like we’re all just wired to overthink. It’s probably me doing just that with my decision to not go with a Liverpool attacker.

Let me take you through that decision and some other relevant ones while building my Gameweek 1 team.

The elephant in the room is that as of today, I plan on starting without Mohamed Salah (£12.0m) or a Liverpool attacker for that matter. There are two primary reasons for this.

What is FPL Upside Chasing and how can I implement it in 2020/21?

        Exactly my thoughts!

My only worry is Son trolling me if he's stuck out wide. Could be golden though.

I'm also worried about Son and considering a Chelsea mid instead. Will go down to the wire on that.

If I go with A) I'll probably just do Salah > Bruno for my United asset in GW2

Convenient reminder that Soucek is an unbelievable deal.

Went back and did stat comparisons between him and the likes of ASM and Armstrong and he butchers them on xG and touches in the penalty area. He might not always be in the opponents' half, but when he is, he's in the box and he's getting good shots on goal.

He has goals in preseason, headers after ghosting in late to the box, he has a track record of scoring a lot and he's only 5m in a West Ham team that will concede goals which means they will also conversely be forced to attack more.

An amazing enabler and his recent quarantine stint could end up being perfect because from being a staple in a lot of teams, he's now a differential again with under 7% ownership. Great first GW fixture too if you need cover for MUN or MCI players.

He's not a 5th mid. He's a 4th mid. A 5th mid doesn't play in like 99% of games. Soucek could cost 6m and I'd seriously consider getting him in.

If he cost 6m would you feel better about it? Honestly, I think my own answer would be yes lol.

The price can really skew perception. He's unreal value. And the goal of the game should be to pick up the best value players. You can then stack more big hitters with the cost savings.

The 1.5m price difference is significant especially as a percentage of their overall cost. But yes, he is putting up good numbers too. Although Soucek had more goal attempts and more goal attempts in the box than Bowen even then. It's ridiculous how they've underpriced him. He should be at least 6m.

How many games would you start him as 4th mid when you consider the awful fixtures?

Really hope that WHU and NEW fixtures would be changes so I could save 0.5 by having Soucek instead of ASM.

All of the first 4. It's only 567 that is horrendous imo. I think he's a better deal than ASM. He'll offer more for less.

Fair enough. Took a second look and first four are not that bad.

Maybe my question for myself is that should I get Soucek for 352 with ASM or lose ASM and get 0.5 in the bank and having Soucek in 442 (Davis currently my fodder fwd). Those cumulating 0.5s can be lifesavers in upcoming weeks when thinking about moves to Manchester teams etc.

Deal breaker for me to allow an Auba/Salah team. Might struggle for the CS point but I think they will be so leaky that they will have to attack and try and win games 2-1, 3-2 etc.

Using him as a 4th mid might mean making sure your team can handle a 4-4-2 for the hard spell.

Soucek is my 4th mid. He can be on or off the bench, sharing with my 4.5 def - currently Vinagre.
He's a terrific player for 5m - my problem is the dysfunctional team he plays for. I can see them bottom of the table going into November and the manager being sacked. At that point Hammers will prob start playing a lot better and Soucek will be exciting.
For now though, if he's quiet he'll not do any harm on my bench; if the optics and stats look good he plays.

Doesn't wipe the floor with ASM for that metric, for any oppoent half based metric ASM was better. XGI was the same too, though granted XG better for Soucek.
Tempting to go with him over ASM for first fixture though and as bad as their fixtures are in the first few, Newcastle don't fair much better.

Keita & Minamino become options soon. Feel it in my plums. But i have cowardly plums so i wont be starting with them.

Not bad. But I don't like that all your forwards are in the same price range, makes your team structure very inflexible. And you'll bench a 5.5+ player every week. Also Greenwood might soon not be nailed anymore.

The 6m bracket has so many options.. bats, Wilson, Watkins to that list as well. DCL for a bit more. There really isn’t much in the premium bracket to consider besides Werner and aguero :/ think strategy this season is for Budget Attack and premium mids

      What would you choose?
      A) Salah + Soucek
      B) Havertz + James Rodriguez + 0.5 (spent on upgrading 4.0 def to 4.5 def on bench)

DCL or Harvey Barnes? Both teams have good fixtures to start.

DCL for me, but only for 4 weeks probably.

I want Puli but Lampard said he'll have to manage his minutes, so have gone with Havertz instead

        Grrrr

Suspect Puli gets 30 mins only. Frank was coy about saying how he'd deal with the hamstring. Eased in

Not at all sure Havertz starts either. But think he's the more probable to get 60 mins

I been swapping between the 2! Is it likely Pulisic will be subbed for Havertz or vice versa? Which one gets more minutes? I dunno!!

Not a long term solution. For me there are better options elsewhere as Leicester are missing some key players.

Who would you have? Almost everyone of those interesting 4.5s are rotation risks/leaving/etc. I have currently Egan, Dier, KWP and Mitchell as 4.0 but considering an upgrade of Mitchell to 4.5 (Justin or someone else).

Final draft, will rotate between a 343 and a 433. GTG?

      Salah | Auba | Son | Soucek | Bissouma
      Werner | Wilson | Mitro

Started Kelly Ward last season on this philosophy and it worked

Could actually be a 6 pointer there in weeks 1-4 and then it's a golden run. Chelsea and United perhaps suboptimal

Talk is that defence will be close to full strength quite soon. Well as close to full strength as it ever gets

          Waiting on Roy.

but depends whether you intend to upgrade either Son or Alli in a few weeks to Fernandes or Rashford, in which case it would be easier to do that from Davies and Son

Controversial but I'd go Davies and Alli. The extra pennies help but I'd go those two even they were the same price
