What impact will Aké have on Man City’s FPL defenders in 2020/21?

The arrival of Nathan Aké (£5.5m) at Manchester City could improve the club’s defensive prospects in 2020/21.

Pep Guardiola’s men were missing consistency and strength in depth at centre-back last season but Aké can be stabling influence this time around.

We have assessed the former Bournemouth defender’s credentials ahead of the new campaign, what impact he will have on the City defence and whether or not that can make him a viable Fantasy Premier League asset.

As we have used Opta data, only those with a valid Fantasy Football Scout subscription can access this article in full.

What defensive contributions did Aké make last season?

Rodrigo could be listed as striker in FPL but he either plays in wing, at 10 or as 2nd striker. He would be more interesting if listed in midfield.

He can of course still be very good in FPL sense. And he is nailed.

It would be a travesty to list him as a forward when Aubameyang is listed as a mid.

Messi too expensive (And old). Only City and PSG are options. Neither need to worry about money, so can afford the bills, and the quick write down.

I fancy he goes to City and enjoys getting kicked playing Burnley, and Foden and others realise they nee to leave to get a game.

Biggest with Sane, who realised you’re only a top player if you get to play.

How can I be bitter? Good for Messi, who is the best player ever other than perhaps Pele or Best for talent.

I’m not a city fan. If he goes to City, I’m saying City players who also have egos and want to play will likely be annoyed. Who wants to sit on the bench?! Hence Sane being the smart one. He’s off to a winning team to start in first 11.

He won the WC thanks to a handball goal scandal. Messi has won so many more cups compared to Maradona, he is so much more talented and consistent. It’s not even close but in Messi’s favour. Even Ronaldo is better than Maradona.

The generations that grow up without watching either will logically conclude Maradona's merits were greater. Messi's goal records will be downplayed as being against mostly shite La Liga teams, like Pele's today.

That wasn't trolling. Start with the entire Bayern first 11. I'm sure you can find 9 additional players on your own who are better footballers than a diving dribble merchant who missed at least 8 sitters in the 3 decisive CL games.

Neymar is unique in that he can create and scores goals, is one of the best dribblers in the world and heavily contributes in building attacks. So actually he fulfills multiple roles, similar to Messi.

Pro tip: watch football games before forming your opinions, not after.

Only someone who exclusively watch highlights and still has the elementary school playground mentality of 'I wanna be the goal scorer' would honestly rate Neymar in the top 20 footballers in the world. I know there's a lot of clueless people with that way of rating footballers but it doesn't make it right. I visited the Nou Camp and loved around Barcelona for a few months years ago. Messi is treated like a deity there. The museum in the stadium is basically a shrine to him. Hundreds and hundreds of people waited for hours to wave at him from 100m distance behind a gate as he arrived for training.

You’d only believe that if your main source of football news is Daily Mail and their Spanish equivalents. Messi influenced the decision to hire Gerardo Martino; none of the managers since then were hired based on Messi’s decision or influence.

All of the above were Bartomeu’s decisions.

I am q big messi and barcelona fan. Seeing all this hate for a player like messi I find unfair.

Has being at barca helped him, yes! But has him being at barca helped barca, equally yes!
Its mutual. They have done a lot for him and he has done a lot for them.
Think from a player's perspective...he can only play for so many more years, shouldn't he try his best to write history the best he can.
If any superstar player has been loyal to one club its him, but when he decides to leave ppl calling him dis-loyal?
    Comeon now.
He will always have respect for barca but he has to do whats best for him esp given how barca organization been messing up past few years.
Have u seen the barca team? He has been carrying them single handedly. They would be much lower in the table if he wasn't there (see what happened in games he didn't play) how would that be for a team like barcelona to not make it to a European competition?

Anyhow, to each their own I guess.

Some thoughts on Palace preseason match. Line up very interesting. This is speculative. But I’m sure you’re all as Palace obsessed as I am 🙂

The team was essentially full strength and a likely pointer to how RH intends to start season. Benteke out perhaps a factor.

4.0 action? Poor outlook. Not surprisingly Ferguson looks to be down the pecking order. Ward started at RB and Ferguson didn’t make bench even. He may well get the next match but will need to shine and get the two after that to be considered likely at RB to start season.

At LB PvA is said to be ahead of schedule and may feature quite early. Slightly surprisingly Riedewald started there. Mitchell came on very early when McCarthy was injured and Riedewald moved central. Mitchell is still a prospect there week 1 but short term. Also possible Ferguson gets the next match there. But really it’s going to be hard to call who gets week 1 now

McCarthy was a good call for very regular 4.5 minutes - near to first choice in central midfield for Palace. Injury unknown

Central defence injury situation not quite as serious as some have it. Dann is indeed still there. His partner is either Kouyate (experienced there at international level) or Kelly who’s not seen as RB really except in extremis. Did well there.

Interest with Zaha now higher for me. He got the full match and there is a possibility he’ll be more central/attacking this time. Formation was more attacking starting close to a 4-3-3. He was poor value last season as was parked wide. Benteke is apparently injured and either Zaha or Schlupp seem the second choice forward now if we revert to 4-4-2. With Eze purchase I’m not sure there’s cash for a new forward.

This interest heightens as there’s a distinct possibility that Fraser will arrive this week. Itk poster on Palace forum who correctly called Eze says Fraser is on the way this week too. If Fraser is on the left that could push Zaha more central and in Royball that’s maybe where he’s best - he’s a very decent finisher. Something almost oop feels possible at least at the start if Benteke is really out.

Looking out to see who gets the wide positions in defence next time and what happens with Wilf.

        Dunno

He wasn’t exactly protected - just about the one player to get 90 minutes. Hard to see who would come in for him - Palace will sell but still need money.

If he goes I suspect it means a forward coming in.

Take your point but have you checked ticker. Palace will sit top of it not too long in from around 5/6 on. Current issue for most is cheap options.

If Fraser comes in then he could be viable and if defence holds up then that too could be good. Ayew was best value attacker in whole game for most of last season. Getting someone with high GI in low scoring side can work

Zaha I never got last season but might this time if he stays and isn’t left wide on his own. Not rose tinted when I view him

McCarthy if he’s fit is a “good” 4.5 option - I think he’s next to nailed. Not many 4.5s there.
