‘Out of position’ Zaha scores as £4.0m defender Mitchell helps Palace to clean sheet

Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

  • Goal: Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m)
  • Assist: Andros Townsend (£6.0m)
  • Bonus: Vicente Guaita (£5.0m) x3, Townsend x2, Scott Dann (£4.5m) x1

Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) bagged the winning goal, but none of the bonus points, as Crystal Palace returned to their roots to grind out a win over Southampton.

The Eagles managed just one win in nine as they lost their way post-lockdown; a fact that must have irked boss Roy Hodgson. After years spent perfecting his kindly owl image, he was clearly busy this summer rebooting his touchline persona.

And for much of the match, his new scowling sunburnt tourist look suited the quality, or lack thereof, on the pitch as play was broken, passes went astray and chances were scarce.

An early burst of Southampton attacking intent culminated in a Jack Stephens (£5.0m) header forcing a routine save from Vicente Guaita (£5.0m) – the first of five stops from the Palace keeper that earned him the maximum bonus award for his 1.8% Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ownership.

At 24.4%, his opposite number, Alex McCarthy (£4.5m), came into the match as FPL’s most popular stopper, but hopes of a clean sheet were dashed after just 13 minutes when Zaha volleyed sweetly home from Andros Townsend‘s (£6.0m) pin-point cross.

The problem for managers who have a keeper playing against Palace is that if they don’t get the shut-out, then save points are unlikely to soften the blow. Hodgson’s side managed just 118 shots on target last year – only Sheffield United (110) had fewer – and they seemed content to live on attacking scraps once they were ahead yesterday.

By the time the game was up and the three points tucked away in Hodgson’s back pocket, his team had worked McCarthy just twice.

The story was markedly different at the other end.

A dour first half clearly led to some pointed dressing room comments from Southampton coach Ralph Hasenhuttl because his players came out swinging after the restart.

Che Adams (£6.0m) set up Nathan Redmond (£6.5m), whose weak shot from inside the area went straight at Guaita. The 13%-owned Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.5m) then put in a low ball that eluded everyone as Southampton’s high tempo start to the second half threatened to pay immediate dividends.

That tempo, ultimately, proved to be unsustainable – perhaps a sign of early-season fatigue – but not before Adams forced a truly brilliant save from Guaita, who reacted instinctively to beat out the striker’s well-hit volley.

It was the closest Adams got to a goal from a generally underwhelming performance. Some 4.8% of FPL managers had hoped he would offer the same sort of attacking threat as his Southampton strike partner Danny Ings (£8.5m) for considerably less money.

Neither, as it turned out, could find a way past Guaita, with the (then) 25.7%-owned Ings denied three times, most notably in stoppage time when his header, from a Walker-Peters cross, was well saved by the Palace keeper.

That capped an eventful day for the Southampton right-back, who had earlier been dismissed by referee John Moss for a high tackle, only for VAR to suggest the official might want to review his decision on the pitch-side monitor. That he did, red became yellow – rightly – and Walker-Peters’ ownership had to be grateful for one point from a match that could have seen him walk off with a negative score.

Hasenhuttl’s side still have a solid early-season schedule to come – one of the reasons Ings is so popular – but the knee-jerkers are already busy and the striker is currently the second-most sold player heading into Gameweek 2.

The opposite is not entirely true for Zaha, however.

The midfielder, who played the match out of position as a second striker, should have walked away with more than an eight-point haul from the match.

Twice he was sent clean through on the counter as Southampton chased the game. He scored from one of the breaks, only to be denied by a marginal, if correct, offside call, and could only find the side netting from the other.

That profligacy hurt his bonus point standing and a tough immediate schedule – Manchester United and Chelsea away over the next three Gameweeks – is not helping his popularity in the transfer market either.

That could all change from Gameweek 5 onwards, when Palace’s fixtures improve markedly. But only if he’s at the club at all.

Hodgson remained unconvinced post-match.

Let’s see what transpires. For me, hopefully nothing. The fact is that every transfer window I’ve been involved in, Wilf has made noises that he would like to play for a club that plays in the Champions League.

But for anything to happen, a club has got to come along and pay the market price. We’re expecting him to accept the situation for what it is and keep playing his best football.

A lot of Palace’s best football was reserved for their defence who, despite numerous injury concerns, kept Southampton at arms length for much of the encounter.

Bargain basement left-back Tyrick Mitchell (£4.0m and 13.7%) looked solid, although he offered little in an attacking sense, while veteran defender Scott Dann (£4.5m) helped makeshift centre-half Cheikou Kouyate (£5.0m) look the part while the likes of Mamadou Sakho (£4.5m) edge closer to a return.

Patience will no doubt inform Hodgson’s game. That is a luxury Hasenhuttl knows he can ill afford.

We had a difficult pre-season with players not with us and we couldn’t work for two weeks on what we wanted to do. You can see it will be a tough season and we must step up immediately.

Based on yesterday’s evidence, that step up will have to be a fairly big one – the Saints entertain Tottenham next.

Crystal Palace XI (4-4-2): Guaita; Mitchell, Dann, Kouyaté, J Ward; Schlupp (Eze 81′), McCarthy (Milivojevic 74′), McArthur, Townsend; Zaha, Ayew.

Southampton XI (4-4-2): McCarthy; Bertrand, Bednarek (Vestergaard 45′), J Stephens, Walker-Peters; Smallbone (Djenepo 77′), Ward-Prowse, Romeu, Redmond; Adams (Long 85′), Ings.

Anyone hanging onto Alli another week? (Maybe unless Havertz/Puli go mental)

2FT could be useful in GW3.

Any reason why not? Tbf I didn’t expect Everton to be pushovers, and I heard he was one of their better players first half?

The tough fixtures include a Liverpool team that have forgotten how to defend.

I think i will hold him one more week. They looked significantly worse without him in the line up. I’d always planned to possibly move on by GW3, so i think ill stick to that. Having 2FT in GW3 will be huge so we can have a look at city and united.

I'm holding. Bringing Martial in this week then holding Alli to assess. Could be flashes in the pan for one week.

The extra weeks info will be worth it and surely JRod or Willian will only increase the once since everyone wants a Manc player this week. Also, Arsenal won't play Fulham every week

To wild card, or not to wild card. Here me out....

I am really thinking about pulling the trigger and getting an early start on KDB and Bruno. We rarely have a situation where two of the biggest teams have a blank GW1. This could be the season of an early wildcard.

Other seasons I've saved by wildcard and disrupted a perfectly good side. Are people there won't be enough price changes by GW 3 to get Man City and Man U assets? Those that do it now could be stealing a march on those not doing it.

    Thoughts you lovely people?

It isn't bad - although I do have Ali, Mitro, Adams, Saint Max.

I think this wildcard could be more strategic getting on the United and City players early, before prices rises.

I’ve always been an early Wildcarder. Not this early though - it’s too soon to really get your moneys worth from it. I’ll wait until at least after GW3 but more likely for after the transfer window in case Sancho or someone else joins

My best seasons have been decisive early WCs. Bruno and KDB already rising. By GW 3, it could easily be an extra 0.5 you need to find, especially if others are dropping (e.g. Ali).

UTD and City are yet to play. WC after GW2 fixtures are done would be a better idea if you intend to use it early compared to pulling the trigger on the unkown now.

I can get a team with KDB, Bruno and Salah. Good enough for me.

Don't want Mane. Auba would be good but he was glued to the line too much. 3 out of the 4 main targets is good enough and it is only possible now before prices rises. Otherwise you compromise the rest of the team too much

Thanks. I am just talking myself into it the more I think about it. Either KDB and Bruno could haul or it could spectacularly backfire in my face. From what we have seen so far penalties will be key again in the VAR age,

I'm wildcarding but it was always the plan to ever since it was revealed that City and Utd wont join the party until GW2. I wasn't going to deviate from that plan regardless of how my GW1 team performed (which has been terrible by the way).

In my opinion, along with Liverpool, City and Utd players are the best FPL players and I want players from the best teams in my team. Far too much surgery would have been needed to get the team I want without wildcarding. I always wildcard early anyway so I don't considerate it a waste of a wildcard. It would have been used in the first 5 weeks anyway going on history.

There is a lot of hype around Chelsea players and they may indeed force a re-think at some point but for now, nobody really knows how they are going to set up, who is nailed and if the new players are going to be any good from an FPL point of view. They have also lost one of their best players in Willian.

I never considered it because I tend to be a chip-hoarder, but the idea of having 5 or 6 of City/United as of next gameweek, when most teams will be slowly migrating one or two at a time, could be a really big advantage. Hmm.

The second wildcard is the chip to hoard for as long as possible for the blanks and double weeks that seem to occur near the end of the season.

Agreed, I always do that, so was spitting feathers when everyone got that unlimited transfers after lockdown, wiped out my advantage!

It was still an advantage if you still had your wildcard. It was those like me who didn't have it who got screwed. You could have taken advantage of the unlimited transfers by stocking up with those City, Sheff U, Villa, Arsenal double week players and also use the bench boost if you still had it and then use the wildcard to get rid of them all.

I didn't have that option as only had the free hit chip.

              1. Bennerman
                • 5 Years
                3 years, 6 months ago

No, because I had a team already set up and then a strategy for the chips. I would have used free hit because i'd evolved over the weeks to a brilliant team, but I couldn't use free hit because of the way it worked. If I'd used the free transfers I'd have smashed my great team, only to rebuild it again – at far greater price and at the cost of a wildcard, which I was saving for the usual massive double gameweek around 33/35/.

                So I got well stiffed.

You got screwed way less, you got to rebuild your team for free, effectively a third wildcard.

Not that it hurt at the time or still stings, of course. Ahem.

That's one way of looking at it but I still think the unlimited transfers helped those who had the wildcard left more than those who didn't. Particularly those who also had the bench boost left.

I didn't do any transfers at all even with an unlimited amount available as I also had built a team I was happy with over lockdown. I used the free hit chip.

I don't, if it had run continuously as per a normal season then those like me with every chip intact were really well set, huge advantage. Les of an advantage once every man-jack given a free wildcard as late as week 30.

Still, as I say, water under the bridge now – even if it is murky water with several turds and discarded nodders in it.

A popular and effective strategy that a lot of people with the wildcard and BB left employed was to use the unlimited transfers to fill their squad with double week players and players with good fixtures and utilise the BB as well. I wish I could have done that!

Any serious player would have been building their team for the resumption with the weekly transfers anyway as I was meaning the unlimited transfers was of no benefit.

I know, I was aware of the free transfers ('slow wildcard' was the phrase de jure) but as I say, I had spent weeks and weeks creating a really good team, out of the price reach of most people as well. With two juicy double weeks ro come and all the toys at the ready.

                        Then... wrecking ball.

Yeah but having that aforementioned strategy available with the wildcard still intact to repair everything after it was a huge weapon in itself and big advantage over those without the wildcard who did not have that luxury. And was perhaps a better scenario than the one you had planned for before lockdown and subsequent time restraints changed the fixture landscape.

I was going to wildcard to the perfect team for a massive double gameweek bench boost, so no. That's the biggest advantage you can get in the game.

I agree that allowing people unlimited transfers was a joke and unnecessary especially as the normal weekly transfers were available to use. But I think what has cost those with the chips left was the fixture schedule change meaning no bumper double weeks to utilise the chips in.

Yep I'm watching it. He's looked lethal all tournament but Zverev is winning this without really doing anything spectacular. He's hitting the ball well but it's mainly Thiem errors.

Fascinating start to the season. I see people contemplating moves like TAA -> Digne to free up funds.

Shot down by the masses, as expected, but you don't win by doing like everyone else. Follow your gut I say... 🙂

Well knowing TAAs fantasy potential he doesn't really need fixtures to produce the goods. But Everton is a completely different animal this year, so I can see the logic behind a move like that. Still risky, mind.

At 54,4% ownership it is very courageous to ditch and could very well turn out to be a decisive move.

Exactly. Hard to go back back when he starts firing, and you know a haul will hurt you. Still, nothing to say that Digne won't at least keep up the next few weeks.

They’ll tighten up surely yeah. Granted chelsea will be better attacking than Leeds too you’d think

Agreed. I think a clean sheet is doubtful. But i dont think we will see the same TAA or VVD errors we saw week 1.

They need to defend deeper. Highline not doing TAA or them any favours.

They won't produce the same performance as this weekend, that's for sure. Having said that, Chelsea is a different animal and a CS is unlikely.

Fair enough, I'm not getting rid either but I think there is some merit given how Liverpool look defensively atm

          • 4 Years

The defense will improve. They can keep CS against any team, and TAA can get points against basically any team. Fixtures are not that important when it comes to him.

    5. F4L
      • 9 Years
      3 years, 6 months ago

Would still advise against it. Leeds barely had any chances, and their easiest goal came from an error which will be very few and far between over the course of the season.

TAA is just still getting up to speed, lack of pre-season minutes was not ideal.

      1. Chris_White

All that is true. I'm not saying people should do it, and I'm keeping myself. But there is some merit to it, especially after seeing how solid Everton look.

Yup, I had Werner up front on his own with Digne our back and VVD. Everyone said I needed TAA and another striker. Did it and failed. Don’t listen to the masses go with your gut. I did in the rest of my team so now on 73pts with Werner & Egan to play

I'm very vary of getting sucked into echo chambers. Everyone validates each other until the group become so sure about a decision that it becomes immune to new external information or independent thought.

I find it best to think, act, and identify as an individual. Communicate and learn from others sure, but ultimately think for yourself.

    Those considering wildcarding immediately:

Unless your team is a total mess, and talking like sub20 points, I wouldn’t. Give it at least another week. You picked your starting team as it was for a reason, and not just for this week (I hope!!). Reassess next week with another week of evidence INCLUDING of City and United!

    My 2 cents anyway

I picked my team PURELY on GW1 with strategy to WC GW2. Sitting on 65 points with Werner left. Swapped out Auba, Mitro, Son and Adams for Sterling, Willlian, Martial and Bamford. TAA our for Digne but still have Van Dijk. Most not knee jerk, some planning involved somewhere!!
