Newcastle’s three debutants impress as West Ham flop ahead of tough fixture run

West Ham United 0-2 Newcastle United

  • Goals: Callum Wilson (£6.5m), Jeff Hendrick (£5.0m)
  • Assists: Hendrick, Miguel Almiron (£6.0m)
  • Bonus: Hendrick x3, Wilson x2, Jamal Lewis (£4.5m) x1

Dream debuts for Callum Wilson (£6.5m) and Jeff Hendrick (£5.0m) helped Newcastle to an impressive opening-day win at West Ham.

It’s fair to say, however, that seasoned Fantasy Premier League (FPL) watchers might not wish to board the Wilson hype-train just yet.

The striker is currently in the top ten for Gameweek 2 transfers-in, but many more managers are probably too busy recalling previous bouts of trolling from the ex-Bournemouth man to take the plunge on a player with a history of both scoring streaks and long, barren spells.

Although the match as a whole lacked quality, the first half was entertaining enough for one that finished goalless.

Wilson showed early signs of his danger, twice latching onto left-back Jamal Lewis (£4.5m) crosses but steering a header, and then a shot, wide of the near post.

No Newcastle player created more chances than Lewis and his attractive price point could boost his ownership levels – currently standing at just 1.6% – once the Magpies have navigated a tricky run involving Spurs away and a visit from Manchester United over the next four Gameweeks.

He certainly impressed on Saturday evening, having endured a poor 2019/20 season in which he managed to concede more goals (56) than he scored points (48).

The Hammers shrugged off those early threats to create chances of their own, with both Angelo Ogbonna (£5.0m) and Pablo Fornals (£6.5m) hitting the Newcastle bar before the team’s second most popular FPL pick, among starters at least, came close to breaking the deadlock.

That man was the 6.2%-owned Tomas Soucek (£5.0m), who returned from a period in quarantine to steer a header just wide following an excellent Ryan Fredericks (£4.5m) cross.

And that, aside from a couple of other wayward attempts, was that for Soucek, leaving the (arguably) good value midfielder with an (undeniably) horrible schedule to come, with the Hammers up against Arsenal, Wolves, Leicester, Spurs, Manchester City and Liverpool over the next six Gameweeks.

That should dissuade further investment in David Moyes’ players, and those owning Michail Antonio (£6.5m and 10.8%) could be forgiven for eyeing alternatives up front after a tough opener for their man.

The former midfielder was the loneliest of lone strikers against Newcastle, with Jarrod Bowen (£6.5m) trying, and frequently failing, to make up the ground to provide him with some support up front.

And while West Ham did manage three shots on target to the visitors two, one of those came in injury time at the end of a game well and truly won by Newcastle by then.

That victory came courtesy of two second-half goals.

Wilson opened the scoring, and his Newcastle account, when he hooked home at the near-post from a Hendrick flick on.

The midfielder then sealed the deal late in the game with a sweet strike from just inside the area after good work by substitute Miguel Almiron (£6.0m).

Wilson, who worked well with Andy Carroll (£5.5m) up front, looked lively throughout and was close to a second when Javier Manquillo‘s (£4.5m) cross just eluded him, allowing Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m) to clear.

The only Fantasy blot on a good day for the Magpies was a blank for their most popular asset, the 23.2%-owned Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.5m), who managed only one (off target) shot, put over just the one cross and created precisely zero chances.

Not that his boss, Steve Bruce, cared. He was too busy singing the praises of his new boys, and one older one.

The last week has been a positive week for everybody, the impact the signings have made, the supporters in particular will like the look of them. That is certainly the best I have seen of Andy Carroll since the year he has been back.  He has scored a couple of goals in pre-season and when he plays like that and he stays well, we know what sort of competitor he is.

That is unlikely to signal a stampede to get Big Andy in our Fantasy teams, but Wilson is an entirely different matter. If – and it’s a big if – he can find some consistency for his new team, he won’t stay £6.5m and 10%-owned for long.

As for West Ham, Moyes was refreshingly direct about the match.

I didn’t enjoy the performance and didn’t enjoy the game.

Looking at that evil upcoming schedule, he might not be enjoying anything for a while yet.

West Ham United XI (4-2-3-1): Fabianski; Cresswell, Ogbonna, Diop, Fredericks; Soucek, Rice; Fornals (Haller 67′), Noble (Yarmolenko 67′), Bowen (Anderson 89′); Antonio.

Newcastle United XI (4-4-2): Darlow; Manquillo, Fernández, Lascelles, Lewis; Hendrick, Hayden, Shelvey, Saint-Maximin (Joelinton 75′); Wilson (Almiron 85′), Carroll (S Longstaff 88′).

Owning Martial over Bruno will be like owning Mane over Salah!

Not exactly imo, its still an attacking midfielder vs a striker. More like owning Aguero over KDB

Not even close. Martial was scoring more points than bruno after restart. And now he'll be in baps too being a striker so the extra point as midfield goal doesn't matter that much. Plus he's a striker and bruno is behind him. Salah mane basically play same positions on opposite wings

Better underlying stats too and 1.5 less than bruno. Get both i say though cuz he wins a lot of penalties for Bruno

    Thoughts?

    1. Ings to Martial
    2. Son to Rashford
    3. Ings Son to Vardy James/Greenwood -4
    4. Ings Son to DCL Bruno -4

Tbh, tempted by 4. But is Bruno really worth it over Rash and Martial?
Don’t mind taking a hit, been patient last season and ended up with the worst result ever.

Gamble on GW1 set up half worked only - there's an effective minus 4 to get back to template set up

Better to take week 3 than week 2 yes?

Kane to Martial or Bruno the solution, Odds on either of those outscoring him by 4 is key.

Part of equation is Kun or Werner from 3 by holding Kane one more.

    Thoughts?

        1. Kane to Martial now

This would allow minus 4 next week of KdB Werner week 3 to have Vardy Martial Werner up top. Nothing much else likely right now.

        2. Kane to Bruno now

Mid line of Bruno KdB and Ings Vardy up top.

        3. Hold Kane

Take a mini WC week 3 - loads of options. Play Kane Vardy Ings again. Not seeing it as high scoring week and don't see United scoring loads at all. Southampton an open defence.

          Haul?

Palace average 2 away to top 4. Who gets the goals? Will Southampton keep a cs? Good odds on Kane GI - better than anyone at United

I deeply regret choosing Kane over Salah!
I still want to see United for one game before committing - partly to see how Beeky affects Bruno's positioning.
      It's still a 2FT for GW3 for me.

        Think I'm with you

Spurs could easily have had 2 first half. Horrid second half of course but there were more goals there. Southampton way more open than Everton after all

My only regret is Auba over Mo. But for the pens I still think the right call on 2 game stretch.

You need to consider the prospect of price rises too. Holding out to GW3 for Martial and/or Bruno will undoubtedly see both rising in value

        • 5 Years
        3 years, 7 months ago

        Not an issue for me

Went with price rises far too much previously and over transferred as a result. key strategy this time is to ignore unless necessary.

Had all the right players in early last time but blew 80 points on hits.

Also I have Soucek sitting in Midfield with effective free 0.5 to absorb rises. Part of GW1 set up was to allow for this scenario of rises and he's my itb cash!

I think I'm ready to commit to a WC GW3 plan. Even though I had a great start with 72 and Werner + Havertz left, I feel like this season more than any other, you stand to gain a lot from a very early WC.

We all wanted City and United for this season when we saw the prices, and because of the blank, most of our teams don't have any. Wildcards therefore are likely to change a significant number of players early on. A lot of managers I feel will get stuck holding onto the likes of Auba, Son, ASM type of players as well as incorrect defenders far past their sell-by date in order to put out other fires. The core players that will score points and provide value look like MUN, CHE and MCI. They will hold on until like GW5 for the Intl. break but the fixture swing is in 3 and if you WC in 3, roll FT in 4, you'll have 2 for Intl. Break and a team value head start.

Liverpool defense looks shaky and unworthy of investment. Lots of teams with multiple of them. I think focusing on Joe's idea of wildcarding from a position of strength is the way to go and to be aggressive to get those guys in.

    See you all tonight!

Now I just have to decide what the most effective one week punt GW2 transfer is going to be...

    1. Pukki Blinders
      • 4 Years

All it takes is one hit and I’ll have my ideal WC team for gw3... honestly can’t justify it but depends on your team I guess

You do? My ideal GW3 team looks nothing like my current.

        It looks something like:

        McCarthy Steer
        Robbo Saiss Vinagre Shaw Mitchell
        KdB Foden Fernandes Havertz Soucek
        DCL Werner Wilson

I want double City starting GW3 to get a leg-up, double Wolves defense, double Chelsea and at least some MUN. I don't have any of that right now. Waiting on Wolves def to see who starts waiting to see which Chelsea is best etc.

    After contemplating for sometime, I think I will push the button and WC this gw. Don't ask me why because I am mostly a short term FPL player :-D.. I haven't done so yet but this is my old team vs new team;

    OLD

    McCarthy Button
    TAA Robbo Vinagre Mitchell 4.0
    Salah Auba Alli ASM Bissouma
    Werner Ings 4.5

    NEW

    Pope Button
Ake Digne Justin(or Vinagre maybe) Mitchell Ferguson
    Auba KDB Greenwood Harrison Elneny
    Werner DCL Tony

Is the WC warranted? Going Pool less as I am not convinced of their defence yet, and Auba may become Salah if he does well again against Chelsea.

    Thoughts?

Wait one more week then you can get rid of Auba. Team should be fine for this week.

Alli out probably. Greenwood, Foden, JamesR are the best options.

No less than EIGHT players you haven't seen in action yet. And Elneny.

Elneny tbh did well the other day albeit against a weak Fulham team. If he strings a few decent games then maybe he will get more games but yeah he is a 50 50. Would wait til Friday and analyze. Thanks.

Elneny is a lesson in not WC too early. He probably WON'T string a few games together, or will be hoiked on 59 mins when Arsenal need a goal. At best, he'd only ever bag 3 points.

Wouldn’t wildcard that team, sell a pool defender and upgrade somewhere else.

      This looks absolutely dreadful.

Pool defense starts firing again and you have to restructure your team massively.

Yeah but they looked shaky the other day. Actually they have been like this for sometime now and the next 2 won't be easy..

      In a word, no.

Team doesn’t warrant a wildcard so wait it out

    Current team :-

    McCarthy (Button)
    TAA Justin Vinagre (Mitchell Buur)
    Salah Auba Son Soucek (Bissouma)
    Werner Ings Mitrovic

Got £0.5 ITB so was thinking Son > Rashford or carry the FT over?

    My team is currently

    McCarthy, Steer
    TAA, Ayling, Justin, KWP, Mitchell
    Salah, Auba, Havertz, ASM, Soucek
    Werner, Adams, Mitrovic

    2 mil ITB

Will wait for tonights games to finish but thoughts on possible transfers.
    A) Havertz to Fernandes
    or
    B) Havertz to James Rodriguez & Adams/Mitrovic to Martial

Did you actually watch the game? He was dangerous. He was also being hack targeted by Moyes because of his threat. That hopefully wont happen every game as teams will soon realise Newcastle has multiple threats.

I really want Richarlison after watching yesterday's game. Hames cutting inside and always seeking that switch to the left with incisive passes. Just one of those days but he could have had 2 or 3. Anyone else tempted, I know the price is steep

Think he'll benefit more than DCL in terms of chances.

UNPOPULAR Thought. Super Cheap Def Wild card Team with 4-5-1. Your Opinions please:

    McCarthy (Nyland)
    Justin Holding Ayling Lewis (Mitchell)
    Salah Willian KDB Sterling Pulisic
    Martial (Brewster, Davis)

It’ll be hard to jump on a bandwagon in attack at 6-7m, same goes if TAA or a premium defender starts firing you could be in trouble

      Awful.

Team balance is ruined. Also, if you're gonna WC you will want Wolves defenders from GW3.

Like it. Although I think two cheap strikers is risky. Downgrade martial maybe? Maybe one of the city Mids to a utd Mids and then have two mid priced strikers.
      Anyway like it

1 playing and 2 non-playing forwards = disaster. No flex options, COVID on the rise so playing subs essential imo

    my actual team FPL:

    McCarthy - Button
    VVD - Egan - Doherty - Mitchell - Douglas
Salah - Auba - Zaha - Havertz - Oriol Romeu
    Werner - Mitrovic - Wilson

    FT: 1
    ItB: 0

    1 move or 2 move with -4?
    KDB or fernandes in?
    any suggestion?

    Ryan
    TAA KWP Justin
    Salah Auba Son ASM
    Werner Adams Mitro

    McCarthy Saiss Bissouma Ferguson

    A) roll FT
    B) Adams to DCL

Now I don’t rate Bamford that highly but getting him in on WC is ok for now. He scored against Fulham in their match a couple months ago. Rodrigo has terrible stats and will be second choice
