Newcastle’s three debutants impress as West Ham flop ahead of tough fixture run

West Ham United 0-2 Newcastle United

  • Goals: Callum Wilson (£6.5m), Jeff Hendrick (£5.0m)
  • Assists: Hendrick, Miguel Almiron (£6.0m)
  • Bonus: Hendrick x3, Wilson x2, Jamal Lewis (£4.5m) x1

Dream debuts for Callum Wilson (£6.5m) and Jeff Hendrick (£5.0m) helped Newcastle to an impressive opening-day win at West Ham.

It’s fair to say, however, that seasoned Fantasy Premier League (FPL) watchers might not wish to board the Wilson hype-train just yet.

The striker is currently in the top ten for Gameweek 2 transfers-in, but many more managers are probably too busy recalling previous bouts of trolling from the ex-Bournemouth man to take the plunge on a player with a history of both scoring streaks and long, barren spells.

Although the match as a whole lacked quality, the first half was entertaining enough for one that finished goalless.

Wilson showed early signs of his danger, twice latching onto left-back Jamal Lewis (£4.5m) crosses but steering a header, and then a shot, wide of the near post.

No Newcastle player created more chances than Lewis and his attractive price point could boost his ownership levels – currently standing at just 1.6% – once the Magpies have navigated a tricky run involving Spurs away and a visit from Manchester United over the next four Gameweeks.

He certainly impressed on Saturday evening, having endured a poor 2019/20 season in which he managed to concede more goals (56) than he scored points (48).

The Hammers shrugged off those early threats to create chances of their own, with both Angelo Ogbonna (£5.0m) and Pablo Fornals (£6.5m) hitting the Newcastle bar before the team’s second most popular FPL pick, among starters at least, came close to breaking the deadlock.

That man was the 6.2%-owned Tomas Soucek (£5.0m), who returned from a period in quarantine to steer a header just wide following an excellent Ryan Fredericks (£4.5m) cross.

And that, aside from a couple of other wayward attempts, was that for Soucek, leaving the (arguably) good value midfielder with an (undeniably) horrible schedule to come, with the Hammers up against Arsenal, Wolves, Leicester, Spurs, Manchester City and Liverpool over the next six Gameweeks.

That should dissuade further investment in David Moyes’ players, and those owning Michail Antonio (£6.5m and 10.8%) could be forgiven for eyeing alternatives up front after a tough opener for their man.

The former midfielder was the loneliest of lone strikers against Newcastle, with Jarrod Bowen (£6.5m) trying, and frequently failing, to make up the ground to provide him with some support up front.

And while West Ham did manage three shots on target to the visitors two, one of those came in injury time at the end of a game well and truly won by Newcastle by then.

That victory came courtesy of two second-half goals.

Wilson opened the scoring, and his Newcastle account, when he hooked home at the near-post from a Hendrick flick on.

The midfielder then sealed the deal late in the game with a sweet strike from just inside the area after good work by substitute Miguel Almiron (£6.0m).

Wilson, who worked well with Andy Carroll (£5.5m) up front, looked lively throughout and was close to a second when Javier Manquillo‘s (£4.5m) cross just eluded him, allowing Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m) to clear.

The only Fantasy blot on a good day for the Magpies was a blank for their most popular asset, the 23.2%-owned Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.5m), who managed only one (off target) shot, put over just the one cross and created precisely zero chances.

Not that his boss, Steve Bruce, cared. He was too busy singing the praises of his new boys, and one older one.

The last week has been a positive week for everybody, the impact the signings have made, the supporters in particular will like the look of them. That is certainly the best I have seen of Andy Carroll since the year he has been back.  He has scored a couple of goals in pre-season and when he plays like that and he stays well, we know what sort of competitor he is.

That is unlikely to signal a stampede to get Big Andy in our Fantasy teams, but Wilson is an entirely different matter. If – and it’s a big if – he can find some consistency for his new team, he won’t stay £6.5m and 10%-owned for long.

As for West Ham, Moyes was refreshingly direct about the match.

I didn’t enjoy the performance and didn’t enjoy the game.

Looking at that evil upcoming schedule, he might not be enjoying anything for a while yet.

West Ham United XI (4-2-3-1): Fabianski; Cresswell, Ogbonna, Diop, Fredericks; Soucek, Rice; Fornals (Haller 67′), Noble (Yarmolenko 67′), Bowen (Anderson 89′); Antonio.

Newcastle United XI (4-4-2): Darlow; Manquillo, Fernández, Lascelles, Lewis; Hendrick, Hayden, Shelvey, Saint-Maximin (Joelinton 75′); Wilson (Almiron 85′), Carroll (S Longstaff 88′).

What are the disadvantages of an early wildcard?

With 24 points and Alli, triple Soton, Mitrovic and Mane in the team, I'm heavily considering it. Allows me to jump on the Manc and Everton early on while also switching formations to the classic 343 which has always worked for me in the past.

Wait. Transfer window still not closed. Plus not everything regarding nailed players are known. It’s just that your captain failed and it can fail again even after early wildcard.

Transfer window not being closed is a good point. However, I doubt teams like Chelsea, Everton, City and Wolves will buy anyone who replaces a starting XI player. Those are the ones who I'm targeting. Also, the cheap players I'm getting are Ryan, Lewis, Bissouma and Ayling. Don't think they are at risk.

    6. Karhumies
      • 11 Years

      Disadvantages:
      - Transfer window still open. Could end up messing a part of your WC. For example, if you go heavy on 4.5 defs and there are new signings you might end up in trouble.
      - 4 teams have not played a single match yet. There could be surprises. Going in big for MUtd and MCity without a WC to bail you out is not without its risks. Even these teams could start the season badly.

      Advantages:
+ If you have a lot of players you want to unload quickly (Southampton, Spurs, West Ham, to some extent Liverpool), there is no faster way to do it than using your WC.
+ Allows you to reshuffle money between gk-def-mid-fwd.
+ Allows you to capitalize on good form teams about to play vs bad form teams (e.g. Everton vs West Brom)

      1. Chandler Bing
        • 7 Years
        3 years, 7 months ago

Yes, I'm fully aware of the advantages here. Allows me to jump in on early bandwagons while also reshuffling the team to my desired formation.

As per the disadvantages you mentioned, the 4.5 defenders I'm getting are Ayling, Lewis (new signing) and Taylor/KWP. I think they're safe. My other picks are the likes of Digne, Tony M, DCL Werner, Kdb, Bruno, Havertz and Rodriguez. All these guys are unlikely to be at risk of rotation.

Pukki fan, so watched almost every Norwich match last season. IMO Lewis was their best player. Not active in following PL, so had missed the Newcastle signing.

          My GW2 WC draft:

          433 / 343 formation

          Ryan (4.0)

          Laporte, Digne, Shaw, Lewis, Justin/Ayling/Taylor

Auba (GW3 KDB), Bruno, JRod, Klich, (Bissouma)

          Werner, Martial, DCL

Has anyone done a comprehensive Sterling v KDB analysis? the RMT tool has Sterling ahead of KDB every gameweek but KDB seems to be the more popular pick on here. Is it similar to the Salah v Mane argument? In which case penalties swing it towards KDB.

Would you mind sharing which stats you're looking at?

When looking at xGI Sterling is a clear favourite by 3, which includes many more goals than KDB so those extra few points.

I remember looking and it looked like Sterling was the better option.

I'm planning for Sterling + KDB in GW10ish, would prefer to bring Sterling in ahead of KDB, but with so many Auba > KDB moves planned the price rises worry me too much 🙁

KDB is more predictable, he did better in home fixtures last season averaging 8.7 points per game. If you're going to be rotating captaincy then this makes him the better option. Also it looks like penalties are going to ha e a big impact this season.

Sticking to original plan of captaining against West Ham then selling. Don't see many fixtures after where he would be a stand-out captaincy option over Salah or Chelsea/Utd player.
Think he'll have a good season but 12.5m for a player that isn't a nailed captain is too much

    Early takes
    - C Wilson at Newcastle could be great value
    - Everton look strong and great fixtures. Richarlison blanked but was very lively and would be my pick, closely followed by Digne and Rodriguez
    - penalties flattered Leicester and Vardy in particular. I wouldn’t go near them, though am following Barnes
    - penalties in general may be more key than ever. VAR at saints game was perfect and if they use it like that, we’ll see more fouls in the box caught.
    - I’m still smarting at mane over Salah. I never learn...

          Something like this:

          Martinez (4.0)
          Digne KWP Justin (Boly Mitchell)
          KDB Bruno Pulisic Rodriguez Greenwood
          Werner Wilson (Brewster)

Greenwood could be Richarlison in a 3-4-3

Going on what we saw on MOTD they look like good moves, Richarlison had loads of chances and Barnes looks very capable if he gets his scoring boots on. But only do it if you plan on keeping them both for a good run, you don't want to end up knee jerking for -4's to much.

Wildcarding after wk4 makes a lot of sense to me.

    - Transfer window over. Has brewster gotten a loan move? Did Utd sign Sancho, did the sign Bale!?
    - International break means 2 weeks rather than 1 to extract some additional value. should be good for 0.2-0.3mln trading.
    - fixtures swings are really good for Sp&rs, and CPL/FUL if you want budget strikers
    - we'll have more information on which chelsea (Kai vs Pulisic vs Ziyech) and which city (KdB vs Sterling) mid is the right choice
    - we'll know if any of the value options at Utd/City are actually playing (Mahrez, Foden, Greenwood).

They didn't look great, Son could have been dangerous if Coleman hadn't done a really good job of containing him. Doherty was unlucky not to score but looked poor defensively.
Alli had one decent strike but apart from that he was anonymous. Alli was a tactical substitution to change Spurs shape but it didn't really work.
Overall I think they will struggle this year with Europa league and I don't think they've looked the same since Eriksen stopped playing. I don't think Alli is worth the £8m but it's a tricky decision deciding on a replacement.
Willian looked great but has poor fixtures, Greenwood could offer exceptional value or you might want to find £0.5m to upgrade to a Chelsea mid - definitely don't do anything until after the game tonight!

But if you look at it logically.
I doubt TAA will get a single cs in the next 2, so will need attacking return. Digne could easily make up that -4.
Plus Pulisic & DCL will surely outscore Ings & ASM.

          It could pay off
