Newcastle’s three debutants impress as West Ham flop ahead of tough fixture run

West Ham United 0-2 Newcastle United

  • Goals: Callum Wilson (£6.5m), Jeff Hendrick (£5.0m)
  • Assists: Hendrick, Miguel Almiron (£6.0m)
  • Bonus: Hendrick x3, Wilson x2, Jamal Lewis (£4.5m) x1

Dream debuts for Callum Wilson (£6.5m) and Jeff Hendrick (£5.0m) helped Newcastle to an impressive opening-day win at West Ham.

It’s fair to say, however, that seasoned Fantasy Premier League (FPL) watchers might not wish to board the Wilson hype-train just yet.

The striker is currently in the top ten for Gameweek 2 transfers-in, but many more managers are probably too busy recalling previous bouts of trolling from the ex-Bournemouth man to take the plunge on a player with a history of both scoring streaks and long, barren spells.

Although the match as a whole lacked quality, the first half was entertaining enough for one that finished goalless.

Wilson showed early signs of his danger, twice latching onto left-back Jamal Lewis (£4.5m) crosses but steering a header, and then a shot, wide of the near post.

No Newcastle player created more chances than Lewis and his attractive price point could boost his ownership levels – currently standing at just 1.6% – once the Magpies have navigated a tricky run involving Spurs away and a visit from Manchester United over the next four Gameweeks.

He certainly impressed on Saturday evening, having endured a poor 2019/20 season in which he managed to concede more goals (56) than he scored points (48).

The Hammers shrugged off those early threats to create chances of their own, with both Angelo Ogbonna (£5.0m) and Pablo Fornals (£6.5m) hitting the Newcastle bar before the team’s second most popular FPL pick, among starters at least, came close to breaking the deadlock.

That man was the 6.2%-owned Tomas Soucek (£5.0m), who returned from a period in quarantine to steer a header just wide following an excellent Ryan Fredericks (£4.5m) cross.

And that, aside from a couple of other wayward attempts, was that for Soucek, leaving the (arguably) good value midfielder with an (undeniably) horrible schedule to come, with the Hammers up against Arsenal, Wolves, Leicester, Spurs, Manchester City and Liverpool over the next six Gameweeks.

That should dissuade further investment in David Moyes’ players, and those owning Michail Antonio (£6.5m and 10.8%) could be forgiven for eyeing alternatives up front after a tough opener for their man.

The former midfielder was the loneliest of lone strikers against Newcastle, with Jarrod Bowen (£6.5m) trying, and frequently failing, to make up the ground to provide him with some support up front.

And while West Ham did manage three shots on target to the visitors two, one of those came in injury time at the end of a game well and truly won by Newcastle by then.

That victory came courtesy of two second-half goals.

Wilson opened the scoring, and his Newcastle account, when he hooked home at the near-post from a Hendrick flick on.

The midfielder then sealed the deal late in the game with a sweet strike from just inside the area after good work by substitute Miguel Almiron (£6.0m).

Wilson, who worked well with Andy Carroll (£5.5m) up front, looked lively throughout and was close to a second when Javier Manquillo‘s (£4.5m) cross just eluded him, allowing Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m) to clear.

The only Fantasy blot on a good day for the Magpies was a blank for their most popular asset, the 23.2%-owned Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.5m), who managed only one (off target) shot, put over just the one cross and created precisely zero chances.

Not that his boss, Steve Bruce, cared. He was too busy singing the praises of his new boys, and one older one.

The last week has been a positive week for everybody, the impact the signings have made, the supporters in particular will like the look of them. That is certainly the best I have seen of Andy Carroll since the year he has been back.  He has scored a couple of goals in pre-season and when he plays like that and he stays well, we know what sort of competitor he is.

That is unlikely to signal a stampede to get Big Andy in our Fantasy teams, but Wilson is an entirely different matter. If – and it’s a big if – he can find some consistency for his new team, he won’t stay £6.5m and 10%-owned for long.

As for West Ham, Moyes was refreshingly direct about the match.

I didn’t enjoy the performance and didn’t enjoy the game.

Looking at that evil upcoming schedule, he might not be enjoying anything for a while yet.

West Ham United XI (4-2-3-1): Fabianski; Cresswell, Ogbonna, Diop, Fredericks; Soucek, Rice; Fornals (Haller 67′), Noble (Yarmolenko 67′), Bowen (Anderson 89′); Antonio.

Newcastle United XI (4-4-2): Darlow; Manquillo, Fernández, Lascelles, Lewis; Hendrick, Hayden, Shelvey, Saint-Maximin (Joelinton 75′); Wilson (Almiron 85′), Carroll (S Longstaff 88′).

On the basis that Chelsea and United are both better teams with better attacks and less negative managers.

Word of warning (from painful past experience).

    Don’t knee jerk!!

One gw can be really misleading and while he may jump on the right bandwagon. You’re way more likely to get a dud and need more hits further down the line.

You know what I realized, if Aubameyang was classed as a forward, nobody would have captained him GW1 over Salah. Auba is a troll, he doesn't score when you need him to, Arsenal are away blah blah.

Just that little change to midfielder, even though it only probably accounts for 1 or 2 extra points, made everyone think he was the best captain. All the same problems listed above still hold true. Over the course of the season it would be worth like an additional 20-30 points but his chance of returning captain worthy scores in a single week hasn't changed.

Rubbish, he would have been the second highest FPL scorer last season if he was a midfielder, and that was playing for a team who had 3 managers last season and was dysfunctional up until Xmas.

I take it you didn't own or captain him against Norwich home, away last season? West Ham away, Watford home, Everton home, etc. People say Auba is a troll because they never own him when he hauls.

"People say Auba is a troll because they never own him when he hauls."

Precisely. He doesn't haul when the fixtures seem to line up for him and instead he'll bag a brace against Liverpool. Auba has shown he's a class forward but that he needs patience. He's a more volatile captain option than Mo who is pretty consistent at home or even Aguero against bottom half sides for that matter.

But the point still stands, Auba would have closer to 20% of the captain poll's votes if he was a forward not a mid. That slight change even though it only accounts for 1 or 2 points has disproportionately resulted in more people handing him the armband.

          1. Qaiss
            • 8 Years

Yeah but I just told you teams he hauled against last season, and that he would have been the second highest points scorer last season if he was a midfielder, playing for a team who had 3 managers.

Arteta has us playing very well and Auba could have a gooc chance of winning the golden boot, as well as being made a midfielder on FPL and getting more points from goals, as well as a CS point. He could be the highest point scorer in FPL this season..

So I don't get your points. Besides, the difference was 2 penalties. Let's see you call him a troll when he hauls against West Ham this week shall we? 🙂

"his chance of returning captain worthy scores in a single week hasn't changed."

Of course it has, he has the potential to score more points in a single gameweek than he had previously.

Take the extreme, if Salah is reclassified as a Defender in fpl, his chance of returning 'captain worthy scores' increases, if TAA was reclassified as a midfielder, his chances decrease.

Maybe I wasn't clear, the point I was trying to make, is that if he gets a 'captain worthy score' of double digits. Being a midfielder only increases his score by 1 or maybe 2 points. The chance that he blanks or gets a dud score is the same. Basically, the chance that he will get attacking returns (goals and assists) is consistent wherever he's classified and that being a midfielder doesn't increase the value he offers if he does get something by a meaningful amount to make him superior to Salah.

Auba was a good captaincy option this week. He got a decent score for a captain.

But it's all relative. Salah is by far one of the most explosive players in the game, his data is off the charts. He plays at home to a promoted side with a manager that religiously presses high up the pitch and leaves space in behind. Klopp is the same. Also, Bielsa declared he will not change the style, he also expressed his concerns about whether the players could manage such a style in this league. For me the match was only going one way.

But that doesn't make Aubameyang a bad player to captain. It just means there was a better one. I think Auba might be the best for this week, given West Ham are weak on their right flank, and Palace looked tight.

I have him... It is more than fine to go with him. But my point is, if he is a forward, far fewer people would have captained him.

The chance that he gets an attacking return is not diminished. Only the points he might get if he does return.

No. Playing victim card and espousing conspiracy theory that auba has been priced to distract!?
It wouldn't have made a difference if auba was 11m. Did you captain bruno at 9.5 last season?
Luck had some involvement. Two penalties decided salah's haul.
The only troll in the game is pep!

I agree he's still the same player in an unreliable team, he's no Salah or Sterling. But for me that means you just have to be more selective in when you captain him - the standard of fixture must be much higher.

Apologies (im not too proud to admit when im wrong). Misread that point about pricing but was clear interpreting what meant. The positioning wouldnt have detracted if striker or midfielder. The decision would still be 50/50

I am not convinced it was all due to the positional change. He was in form up against a promoted team, whereas Salah hadn’t looked on it in a while. The key for me was looking at Salah at home vs Auba away, which so obviously favoured Salah in every single metric. Auba (c) vs West Ham at home, however, is a lock.

      McCarthy
      TAA Ayling Justin
      Salah Auba Pulisic Soucek
      Werner Ings Adams

      (4.0 Taylor Vinagre Bissouma)
      0.0m

      Salah & Ings ➡️ Bruno & Martial(c) -4

This and Auba to KDB/Raz next week frees up 1.5m to upgrade elsewhere or get Salah back when I want to captain him again.

      Thoughts?

That's the kind of answer I was looking for. Easy for those who have a United attacker on the bench or 0.5m for Ings to Martial to say don't make those moves. I could have had 0.5m in the bank but wanted a strong bench as I was punting on Vinagre, Justin & Soucek.

        Decent

But personally don't expect that much from United really in next few - returns but nothing special. But you have tasty Chelsea double up in week 3

If you go there the play is the double up I think - getting the GI right is tough

I really like the next 4 fixtures for United (CRY bha TOT new). Think we'll score atleast a couple of goals in all those fixtures.

Werner could still change my plan though. If Werner looks awful many will be moving him to Martial and I think I'll likely follow but I'm expecting him to do well. Puli & Ings to James & Martial also an option if something goes wrong with Puli today although I want to keep him long term.

Brighton tonight should be interesting for your play.

Newcastle might be the one. But my worry would be GI. The attacking triple up worked as you could almost guarantee returns. Good chance with double up I guess.

About 8 goals sounds right. How many do you expect to hit is the question?

Kind of a free hit on Werner tonight. Keep if he really fires, Martial next week if not.

Personally Son to a Chelsea mid for GW3 is then very likely. Salah performance moved the goalposts...

      Pulled trigger fearing price rises.

Mane and Son -> KDB and Rashford

Mane has a poor record v Chelsea so I’m not too worried at a huge return and was my planned transfer. Spurs were poor and while I wanted to avoid hits, think KDB a week early is worth it.

Both Salah and mane have poor records v Chelsea. Salah 2 assists last season and mane blanked.

I don’t think it’ll be another 5-3. If you picked Salah, bank the points and consider transfers. If you’re an idiot like me and went mane. He’s definitely gone.
