Newcastle’s three debutants impress as West Ham flop ahead of tough fixture run

West Ham United 0-2 Newcastle United

  • Goals: Callum Wilson (£6.5m), Jeff Hendrick (£5.0m)
  • Assists: Hendrick, Miguel Almiron (£6.0m)
  • Bonus: Hendrick x3, Wilson x2, Jamal Lewis (£4.5m) x1

Dream debuts for Callum Wilson (£6.5m) and Jeff Hendrick (£5.0m) helped Newcastle to an impressive opening-day win at West Ham.

It’s fair to say, however, that seasoned Fantasy Premier League (FPL) watchers might not wish to board the Wilson hype-train just yet.

The striker is currently in the top ten for Gameweek 2 transfers-in, but many more managers are probably too busy recalling previous bouts of trolling from the ex-Bournemouth man to take the plunge on a player with a history of both scoring streaks and long, barren spells.

Although the match as a whole lacked quality, the first half was entertaining enough for one that finished goalless.

Wilson showed early signs of his danger, twice latching onto left-back Jamal Lewis (£4.5m) crosses but steering a header, and then a shot, wide of the near post.

No Newcastle player created more chances than Lewis and his attractive price point could boost his ownership levels – currently standing at just 1.6% – once the Magpies have navigated a tricky run involving Spurs away and a visit from Manchester United over the next four Gameweeks.

He certainly impressed on Saturday evening, having endured a poor 2019/20 season in which he managed to concede more goals (56) than he scored points (48).

The Hammers shrugged off those early threats to create chances of their own, with both Angelo Ogbonna (£5.0m) and Pablo Fornals (£6.5m) hitting the Newcastle bar before the team’s second most popular FPL pick, among starters at least, came close to breaking the deadlock.

That man was the 6.2%-owned Tomas Soucek (£5.0m), who returned from a period in quarantine to steer a header just wide following an excellent Ryan Fredericks (£4.5m) cross.

And that, aside from a couple of other wayward attempts, was that for Soucek, leaving the (arguably) good value midfielder with an (undeniably) horrible schedule to come, with the Hammers up against Arsenal, Wolves, Leicester, Spurs, Manchester City and Liverpool over the next six Gameweeks.

That should dissuade further investment in David Moyes’ players, and those owning Michail Antonio (£6.5m and 10.8%) could be forgiven for eyeing alternatives up front after a tough opener for their man.

The former midfielder was the loneliest of lone strikers against Newcastle, with Jarrod Bowen (£6.5m) trying, and frequently failing, to make up the ground to provide him with some support up front.

And while West Ham did manage three shots on target to the visitors two, one of those came in injury time at the end of a game well and truly won by Newcastle by then.

That victory came courtesy of two second-half goals.

Wilson opened the scoring, and his Newcastle account, when he hooked home at the near-post from a Hendrick flick on.

The midfielder then sealed the deal late in the game with a sweet strike from just inside the area after good work by substitute Miguel Almiron (£6.0m).

Wilson, who worked well with Andy Carroll (£5.5m) up front, looked lively throughout and was close to a second when Javier Manquillo‘s (£4.5m) cross just eluded him, allowing Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m) to clear.

The only Fantasy blot on a good day for the Magpies was a blank for their most popular asset, the 23.2%-owned Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.5m), who managed only one (off target) shot, put over just the one cross and created precisely zero chances.

Not that his boss, Steve Bruce, cared. He was too busy singing the praises of his new boys, and one older one.

The last week has been a positive week for everybody, the impact the signings have made, the supporters in particular will like the look of them. That is certainly the best I have seen of Andy Carroll since the year he has been back.  He has scored a couple of goals in pre-season and when he plays like that and he stays well, we know what sort of competitor he is.

That is unlikely to signal a stampede to get Big Andy in our Fantasy teams, but Wilson is an entirely different matter. If – and it’s a big if – he can find some consistency for his new team, he won’t stay £6.5m and 10%-owned for long.

As for West Ham, Moyes was refreshingly direct about the match.

I didn’t enjoy the performance and didn’t enjoy the game.

Looking at that evil upcoming schedule, he might not be enjoying anything for a while yet.

West Ham United XI (4-2-3-1): Fabianski; Cresswell, Ogbonna, Diop, Fredericks; Soucek, Rice; Fornals (Haller 67′), Noble (Yarmolenko 67′), Bowen (Anderson 89′); Antonio.

Newcastle United XI (4-4-2): Darlow; Manquillo, Fernández, Lascelles, Lewis; Hendrick, Hayden, Shelvey, Saint-Maximin (Joelinton 75′); Wilson (Almiron 85′), Carroll (S Longstaff 88′).

the average position map for the sp&rs shows them playing a 4-2-3-1

    - Both fullbacks pushed forward a lot
    - 2 holding mids
    - Moura, Kane & Alli all playing quite centrally (no width) as attacking mids
    - Son up top on his own

and then i look at sou NEW mun WHM bur BHA wba and Son/Doherty (am a non-owner) are actually pretty good options, potentially even for captaincy in that west ham fixture.

Everton were effectively playing the liverpool 4-3-3 system

      - Both fullbacks pushing forward (not as much as the sp&rs ones mind)
      - 3 ball winning / controlling mids
      - DCL as a false 9, the blue bobby.
      - Richarlison & James playing in the inverted winger roles, Richarlison more forward of the two.

Digne & Richarlison look the picks. nice 3 fixtures in the short term WBA cpl BHA

I agree w your observation but they dont press as much as pool. Otherwise the defence and midfield is very compact.

As interested in how Brigthon defence holds up today as Chelsea attack.

Those going United are presumably targeting week 3 - given run after where returns look average at best. Value no more

      You're right.
Probably why I'm happy keeping Salad & going in with Martial only

Martial is the one to be on imo

Looking at a strategy overall where I max out on 8.5 to 9,5 and just get one premium.

Will take 3 weeks or so to get there. Initial set up was a wait and see one with plenty of money tucked away in possible downgrades

Actually see the best value potentially being up top this time and not the middle.

Martial Werner Ings/Jim/6.0 and KdB/Bruno Havertz Puli

          I thought about that.
But dropped it as I'm thinking Wilson Mitro/Wood can keep up with Jimenez Ings considered price difference (few less points)

            Yep

In 2 minds about 3rd slot - it's open in my system

Hoping and thinking Bats is the one to have. Another attacking import on the way and he's simply a better player than Wood and Wilson imo.

Palace scored very nicely in 2018/19 - matched Bournemouth and Leicester. Also from 5 on it's a golden fixture run. Waiting on it. Adams would be my second choice

Avoiding Wilson and Mitro like the plague. Both very wasteful finishers. It'd need sustained form for me even to consider. DCL comes first 😀

City yes but United are not City imho.

Thinking Brighton have done nicely by not doing very much in transfer window. Expecting them to be pretty good this time.

Waiting tonight with interest. If they do look horrid I'll be following your strategy on a modified form

Personally think Martial will do well whatever the fixture is. I think he'll be template in the next 2-3 gameweeks. I'm expecting him to have a big season.

Need to check - you may well be right

Not so very convinced generally though how well restart will stand up for form. There were some very special circumstances there.

Everton and Palace have already confirmed that restart form may be slightly chimeric - Brighton to follow? All fall into same category

How are price changes calculated is it done by relative or absolute changes?

E.g. if Salah went from 20% ownership to 22% is it the 2% increase or the 10% (2%/20%) increase on his current ownership?

And do we know what roughly what size of shift needs to happen to change it?

Mitchell is only temporary with their injuries, Ferguson when he is fit could take the spot over Ward.

        Haven't decided on GK

Can't have them all. Could go for Rodriguez over DCL I guess. Would give a weaker bench tho.

I'd be inclined to go without Keane and afford yourself the flexibility of getting Rodriguez in at some stage.

            4.5 4.0
            Digne 5.5 Shaw Ayling Taylor

I would have one of Salah/Mane/TAA. I like Wilson over DCL. Think he will be great when Fraser gets going.

Other than Foden which is could backfire or do great it's a good team.

But be prepared to get very annoyed in week 8/9 onwards when Arsenal and Liverpool assets start their easy runs

foden a bit of a gamble, otherwise its reasonable.
i think template WC team would do foden to 4.5 and either:
      a) upgrade bruno to salah and digne to vvd
      b) upgrade keane to robbo or vvd.

With the addition of teams like West Brom and Fulham, Vardy's chances of a second straight golden boot looks solid.

i work in a warehouse ,but its just so obvious to me that if they played aubameyang at centre forward he would score 30+goals a year, i remember auba replacing lewandoski at dortmund and he was as good ,i thought wouldnt it be great if auba was in the pl and then bingo ,he came, now hes on the left wing ,same with son at spurs ,why are these blokes paid so much for ballsing up such obvious things with players ,,gimme 2k a week ,gizzajob i could do that...

no offence mate but managers, most of them having played professional football for 10-15 years, probably understand the game better than a bloke who works in a warehouse.

none taken dr and its why i didnt capt auba gw1 ,stuck out on the wing and i aint saying im the best footy manager in the world, but on a basic level surely auba and son would be best employed in the middle

Now the stupid blank week is out the way, left wiush i should have stuck with my gut. Southampton won't perform, Everton and Newcastle will both perform better this year and that's where the bargain players will come from. Pool looked very leaky at the back, spurs were pretty lack lustre.

thoughts on this as an early WC TEAM...

    Pickford
    Digne, Gabriel, Castagne
    Wiliian, KDB, Bruno, Havertz
    Jiminez, DCL, Wilson
    (Steer, ASM, Lewis, Mitchell)

    previous team for GW1:

    McCarthy,
    TAA, Saiss, Saliba
    ASM, Aub, Salah, Son
    Werner, Adams, DCL
    (Steer, Davies, Mitchelll, Bissouma)

i cant behind Jiminez at 8.5.

but there is value in the defence. Vinagre and Buur are gold if they play, even the 5s are 0.5 to cheap.
will transfer Justin to whichever option makes most sense.

Started watching the Spurs all or nothing yesterday after the game finished

Two episodes in its been a first class watch - the cringe factor is off the scale

Jose's David Brent motivational 1:1 pep talks in his office with Alli, Kane, Dier etc are comedy gold - the failed fist bump/handshake at the end of the Kane one was off the charts on the cringe scale

Kane is clearly uncomfortable speaking up generally, and particularly in front of the team - whether it's because of the cameras, or whether he's just like that in general I've no idea - his expletive-laden team talk was very jarring, I don't think he's that type of personality

Levy is another strange fish - doesn't strike me as someone you'd ever want to trust

10/10 so far, fascinating stuff, bring on episode 3

Kane's understanding of motivational speech = add the f word in front of every word.

Actually felt pretty bad for him - it was almost like he'd been forced into swearing for the cameras...

Could be wrong of course it's hard to tell - but he didn't strike me as that type of character at all, just seemed so uncomfortable

I'd say maybe if the cameras weren't there Kane is effectively silent in the dressing room bar the odd tokenistic "Come on lads" - but that's not going to sell any documentaries

It is a very entertaining watch indeed.

With these docs you have to read between the lines. Watch the City one and the Spurs one, and the cohesion among the teams is very different. It's clear that City are a team that work for each other, have great morale, they celebrate everything together compared to Spurs who have like awkward handshakes/fist bumps after wins.

Kane is also very much an introvert and has nothing like the presence of someone like Kompany or even KdB in the dressing room.

Levy is a snake, even a doc meant to portray him in a good light doesn't really succeed. Jose needs to fix the core culture of the squad. The whole vibe of the dressing room feels lacklustre and nothing like a top club like they think they are.

The City one was also fantastic - not necessarily that there's anything earth shattering coming out of it, but it's just the soap-opera feel of these documentaries, it brilliant seeing the personalities & characters in more depth than we ever get in the normal cliche-ridden scripted post-match & pre-match media duties

After watching the city one, and being two episodes into Spurs, my impression is Guardiola would eat Mourinho for breakfast from a management perspective - Pep was operating on a totally different plane, particularly when it came to intensity

Snake is the exact word that springs to mind for Levy so far, sends a shiver down your spine every time he comes on screen, lots of the mastermind/bond-villan type persona going on there, I'd say he's left some trail of dead-bodies to get to where he is

Saw clips on you tube. Unintentionally hilarious - fav bit so far was JM to Aurier -
JM: Serge you speak good English?
      (he nods)
      JM: you panic me!
Aurier with blank uncomfortable stare while being called out.

Plus Kane is like a cartoon captain as you said. The fella needs to attend a few speech therapy sessions and public speaking classes.

Yep - That whole exchange felt very misjudged & unfair from Jose - calling out Aurier in front of the entire squad pre-match for "being capable of giving away a sht penalty on VAR"... was a man-management punch that didn't really seem to hit home, but again hard to tell for sure as you don't really see the before & after

And to be fair he drew up his little chalk board "Aurier attack more in second half please" pearl of wisdom, and Serge duly popped up with the 4th goal... but he wasn't going to celebrate that with Jose for sure lol

Just watching all the highlights from the weekend. Harvey Barnes looked good didn't he? Willian was involved in so much for Arsenal and liked Justin and KWP. Jamal Lewis an interesting 4.5 option for Newcastle as well. Southampton were a bit unlucky - some good saves from Guaita. Zaha also showing promise. James Rodriguez looked good, not sure how good a fantasy asset he'll be.
