Newcastle’s three debutants impress as West Ham flop ahead of tough fixture run

West Ham United 0-2 Newcastle United

  • Goals: Callum Wilson (£6.5m), Jeff Hendrick (£5.0m)
  • Assists: Hendrick, Miguel Almiron (£6.0m)
  • Bonus: Hendrick x3, Wilson x2, Jamal Lewis (£4.5m) x1

Dream debuts for Callum Wilson (£6.5m) and Jeff Hendrick (£5.0m) helped Newcastle to an impressive opening-day win at West Ham.

It’s fair to say, however, that seasoned Fantasy Premier League (FPL) watchers might not wish to board the Wilson hype-train just yet.

The striker is currently in the top ten for Gameweek 2 transfers-in, but many more managers are probably too busy recalling previous bouts of trolling from the ex-Bournemouth man to take the plunge on a player with a history of both scoring streaks and long, barren spells.

Although the match as a whole lacked quality, the first half was entertaining enough for one that finished goalless.

Wilson showed early signs of his danger, twice latching onto left-back Jamal Lewis (£4.5m) crosses but steering a header, and then a shot, wide of the near post.

No Newcastle player created more chances than Lewis and his attractive price point could boost his ownership levels – currently standing at just 1.6% – once the Magpies have navigated a tricky run involving Spurs away and a visit from Manchester United over the next four Gameweeks.

He certainly impressed on Saturday evening, having endured a poor 2019/20 season in which he managed to concede more goals (56) than he scored points (48).

The Hammers shrugged off those early threats to create chances of their own, with both Angelo Ogbonna (£5.0m) and Pablo Fornals (£6.5m) hitting the Newcastle bar before the team’s second most popular FPL pick, among starters at least, came close to breaking the deadlock.

That man was the 6.2%-owned Tomas Soucek (£5.0m), who returned from a period in quarantine to steer a header just wide following an excellent Ryan Fredericks (£4.5m) cross.

And that, aside from a couple of other wayward attempts, was that for Soucek, leaving the (arguably) good value midfielder with an (undeniably) horrible schedule to come, with the Hammers up against Arsenal, Wolves, Leicester, Spurs, Manchester City and Liverpool over the next six Gameweeks.

That should dissuade further investment in David Moyes’ players, and those owning Michail Antonio (£6.5m and 10.8%) could be forgiven for eyeing alternatives up front after a tough opener for their man.

The former midfielder was the loneliest of lone strikers against Newcastle, with Jarrod Bowen (£6.5m) trying, and frequently failing, to make up the ground to provide him with some support up front.

And while West Ham did manage three shots on target to the visitors two, one of those came in injury time at the end of a game well and truly won by Newcastle by then.

That victory came courtesy of two second-half goals.

Wilson opened the scoring, and his Newcastle account, when he hooked home at the near-post from a Hendrick flick on.

The midfielder then sealed the deal late in the game with a sweet strike from just inside the area after good work by substitute Miguel Almiron (£6.0m).

Wilson, who worked well with Andy Carroll (£5.5m) up front, looked lively throughout and was close to a second when Javier Manquillo‘s (£4.5m) cross just eluded him, allowing Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m) to clear.

The only Fantasy blot on a good day for the Magpies was a blank for their most popular asset, the 23.2%-owned Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.5m), who managed only one (off target) shot, put over just the one cross and created precisely zero chances.

Not that his boss, Steve Bruce, cared. He was too busy singing the praises of his new boys, and one older one.

The last week has been a positive week for everybody, the impact the signings have made, the supporters in particular will like the look of them. That is certainly the best I have seen of Andy Carroll since the year he has been back.  He has scored a couple of goals in pre-season and when he plays like that and he stays well, we know what sort of competitor he is.

That is unlikely to signal a stampede to get Big Andy in our Fantasy teams, but Wilson is an entirely different matter. If – and it’s a big if – he can find some consistency for his new team, he won’t stay £6.5m and 10%-owned for long.

As for West Ham, Moyes was refreshingly direct about the match.

I didn’t enjoy the performance and didn’t enjoy the game.

Looking at that evil upcoming schedule, he might not be enjoying anything for a while yet.

West Ham United XI (4-2-3-1): Fabianski; Cresswell, Ogbonna, Diop, Fredericks; Soucek, Rice; Fornals (Haller 67′), Noble (Yarmolenko 67′), Bowen (Anderson 89′); Antonio.

Newcastle United XI (4-4-2): Darlow; Manquillo, Fernández, Lascelles, Lewis; Hendrick, Hayden, Shelvey, Saint-Maximin (Joelinton 75′); Wilson (Almiron 85′), Carroll (S Longstaff 88′).

Who should I bench next week -

    Ward Prowse, Davies or Adams?

Thinking Ward Prowse currently, but not sure how much I trust Spurs defense, even against Southampton.

      That's tough.
Benching 6m sounds weird in a regular GW.

      I'd bench Adams.

          They conceded on set play.
Mou won't be expansive away from home.

Adams won't get 80 minutes again. It was sub in halftime that made RH wait to sub him out early IMO. He's a 60-65 minutes Striker vs Rigid Mou team.

If your plan was always to do Salah to Bruno I guess you should stick to it but selling Mo can't be considered a no brainer.

I wouldn't say any transfer involving Salah out is a "no brainer".

As general advice, I'd want a United player for the next four GWs. If removing Salah was the only way to do that then as it stands I would.

However, we still have to see Chelsea play tonight. If their defense looks a shambles then that balance might change.

I'd definitely want rid of Salah at some point as I wouldn't captain him until GW7. Just have to weigh up when to do it.

Should the blanking teams players have been price locked? Potential for 3/4 to rise without even playing which seems just odd as gw2 is their season start I think it should have been a consideration at least.

Hi all, cant decide whether to aim for 4 "big" hitters in attack (with salah) or 5 big hitters without Salah.

    A: KDB + Salah + Bruno + Werner + 3 midprice players or
    B: KDB + Bruno + Werner + 2 of Son/Rash/Martial/Kai + 2 midpriced players

What's the verdict? If B, any preference of which two?

      A

I think B has a higher expected value, but through in the captaincy and A has a higher ceiling (more options for captains = more variance). Depends how you like to play it. Most importantly, pick 1 strategy and stick to it. I always seem to flip between two strats every season and it costs me.

Was super bummed Richa didn't score yesterday. On the other hand he looked very dangerous so he should score plenty of points in the upcoming 3 matches. My initial plan was to do Auba to KDB for gw3 and then scrape funds from somewhere to upgrade Richa to Martial. But only Auba to KDB looks certain in gw3 at the moment

Quick thought on form. Restart is looking a poor guide right now. All these look different entities on a real large sample size of one 😀

    Palace - quite ok
Everton - defence better and attack functioning
Southampton - poorly defence - could easily have been 2/3 there
    WH - rubbish all over
    Spurs - attack? defence?

Only Newcastle and Liverpool really look to have maintained form so far.

Was always expecting WH & TOT to be rubbish honestly. Hence I decided to spend only 5m on Soucek from both those teams.

Everton have made three major signings so you can't compare that team to the one after lockdown.

Palace vs Soton was a confusing one. Still think Palace will struggle against the bigger teams but maybe decent against minnows.

That’s the sample size of one! And had that game finished after 45 minutes it was Spurs who had had most of the good chances. Game of two halves slightly in my book. No thought of losing Davies

      It was an unusual situation.

Lots of teams had nothing to played for, so I think the data was a bit skewed. In my program I used full season data, or data from a manager switch. I like nice big sample sizes; 4-6 games just doesn't do it for me, the level of the opposition plays too big a factor.

      1. pingissimus
        • 5 Years

        That’s my thinking really

United are the ones that interest me most. Those returns just feel unsustainable in a competitive environment. They’d be level with City and Pool on anything like that form - dubious. Just dubious.

If they’re really that hot then Martial Bruno double up looks a cinch for long value.

    A) Son/Ings > Bruno/Wilson (own ASM)
    B) Auba/Son > Bruno/Willian

Any of these any good? The only way to not take a hit is just to do Auba > Bruno but with WHU next for Arsenal I’d want an Arsenal asset, equally, I don’t want to go without United at home to Palace. Anyone not using WC and in a similar spot?

    Pick one:

    a) Ings > Martial
    b) Ings > DCL & Son > Bruno -4

I wouldn't be rushing to bring in United players just yet.

Old Woy's team was fairly resolute against Soton.

1gw gone and I hate my team already.

    McCarthy, Steer
    TAA, Doherty, R.James, Justin, Mitchell
    Salah, Auba, Son, JWP, ASM
    Werner, Adams, Davis

    Thoughts?

    WC time or -4?

your team is alright maybe just a couple midfield changes and 1 in defence

The JWP, Adams and James picks would worry me most, particularly JWP.

Every year I read "JWP's set pieces though!".

He got his highest score ever of just 117 last season, having played every single minute.

Adams is still very much second string to Ings.

James is a Chelsea defender in a team that can't defend, Thiago Silva won't help that.

I'm edging towards WC on this one tbh, and I don't say that lightly.

    A) Salah and Ings to Bruno and Martial

    B) Pereira and Ings to Klich and Martial

How porous are you expecting Palace to be?

I'm stuck on this one big time - KDB for the captaincy option??

    A) Bruno & Werner
    B) KDB & Jimenez

Didn’t think in GW1 I’d be assessing the Wolves defence to see which mid priced defender I’ll be bringing in for TAA. Funny ol game

Who is keeping Alli for GW2? I really do not want to use an FT this week.

Depends on your Chelsea mid situation, I think. If you don't have one or want another then I'd hold for one week and transfer Alli out for one then.

If you're already as stocked as you want to be on Chelsea then I'd be tempted to get rid this week.

Would like to but the way he was hooked worried me and the reasons seemed contrived.
Rodriguez in for me unless I hear JM say something different

So who has used wildcard already?

I see a lot of people jumped in the bandwagon head first with Bamford, Willian and Gabriel

I don't like the Gabriel move. West Ham have goal threat, then there's liv, SHU, mci, LEI,mun. I guess they're thinking season-long, but we have infinite transfers in this game, and 67 of them are free. So transfer is long-term.

Willian could haul against West Ham, so I can understand that one as a short-term punt. But I think I'll pass. Arsenal are an unpredictable side...

Seriously considering a maverick James Rodriguez GW2 captaincy. Please talk me into keeping it on Auba.

      Kane -> Martial
I think that frees up 1.5, + 1m itb and you've got Soucek -> Roriguez
