Vinagre and Jota benched as Lundstram reclaims Sheff Utd midfield berth

Fantasy Premier League managers have been denied a £4.5m route into Wolves defence for their opening match of the season.

Ruben Vinagre (£4.5m) has been named on the bench for the Gameweek 1 trip to Sheffield United, joined there by Oskar Buur (£4.0m).

Despite Nuno Espirito Santo declaring in his Friday press conference that new signing Fernando Marçal (£5.0m) needed time to adapt to Wolves’ style of playing, the manager has started him at left wing-back anyway.

With Matt Doherty (£6.0m) having left the club for Spurs, Adama Traoré (£6.5m) has been trusted with the wing-back position on the other side of the pitch, rather than 22-year-old Buur.

Also on the Wolves bench is recently reclassified FPL midfielder Diogo Jota (£6.5m), beaten to a place in the front-three by Daniel Podence (£5.5m) and Pedro Neto (£5.5m).

The two wide-men flank Raúl Jiménez (£8.5m) who comes into Gameweek 1 with 18.5% worldwide ownership.

John Egan (£5.0m) and John Lundstram (£5.5m) are the most fashionable Sheffield United assets for tonight’s game, sat in 16.6% and 12.7% of teams respectively.

Both feature in the Blades’ starting line-up, which also includes Jack O’Connell (£5.0m), who missed every pre-season game, while the summer’s top-scorer Billy Sharp (£6.0m) features alongside Oli McBurnie (£6.0m).

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI (3-4-3): Patrício; Saïss, Coady, Boly; Marçal, Dendoncker, Moutinho, Traoré; Podence, Jiménez, Neto.

Sheffield United XI (3-5-2): Ramsdale; O’Connell, Egan, Basham; Stevens, Fleck, Norwood, Lundstram, Baldock; McBurnie, Sharp.

Ryan and Werner cap here. I need a Werner Hatti, then Ryan to save a Havertz pen 😀

Well, Ryan can save the Werner pen, but then Werner scores the rebound. I'll take that

Werner Hatti then subbed on 89mins. 91st min penalty save from Ryan for his 9th save of the match

KDB flying up the price rises haha. As is Bruno!

Doesn’t seem right to me when most would have had them from the start at their price so are now getting them in instead? Unless they don’t rise and FPLstats aren't to know

People need to remember that you picked your players for a reason, and unless you were going to WC gw2 your team was for a longer period of time, not just gw1. We humans like to think that patterns will extend into the future, and while this is often useful, in games where variance/chance plays a huge role it's rash to make decisions based on one data point. It's absolutely not a given that spurs will look poor again next gw or that everton will look solid again etc etc.

So unless your players literally look like they won't play (Alli, vinegar), you shouldn't be making decisions that are completely different to anything you were considering pre gw1.

Apart from Alli and double Sheffield defence, there's nothing wrong with it. Wildcarding for a couple of defenders isn't worth it.

No need. Make some priorities, put a plan in place and execute. You'd be WCing here for at worst 4/5 players.

Absolutely. A lot of teams were sluggish due to lack of pre-season preparation. Many will improve. I chose my squad already writing off GW2 with my Chelsea attack negating my Liverpool defence. Patience pays, I'm sticking to my plan, sans Salah notwithstanding.

From what i can tell, most teams have 4/5 attackers from the top 6. Meaning we need 2/3 enablers between the 5.5m - 7m range...

Who are your enablers (and more importantly why) for the coming few weeks...just throwing at some options below

          - Wilson
          - Mitrovic
          - Adams
          - ASM
          - Foden?
          - DCL
          - Maddison
          - Barnes

Given the shortage in decent mids, i am leaning towards having two cheap strikers...most likely Mitrovic (talisman, good fixtures), and DCL (expensive-ish but better team)

Yep, Soucek and budget 4.5 defenders are the real enablers. Big hitters from top teams i'd like to leave put if possible, the 5.5 - 7.5 bracket is the one where I'd like to have flexibility with transfers depending on fixtures.

Talk about a painful set of late switches in my DEF. Had this:

          Gabriel (15) - Castagne (14) - Saiss (7, so far) = 36

          Switched to this:

          Bellerin (5) - Davies (1) - Boly (2, so far) = 8

          Doh!

Believe it. I'm running a team full of "differential" players, all less than 5% ownership. I'm a huge Atalanta supporter, so wanted to go with Castagne but didn't know how he'd settle in so I went with Davies. Had Gabriel but got dissuaded by news that he might not start (and by the fact that he has only scored two goals before the one on Saturday). I moved from Saiss to Boly bases on security and his own scoring record. So, yeah, believe me or not, it happened.

Need to save cash, is Bamford worth the punt?
            Was thinking Mitrovic > Bamford.

Plan was to hold onto Mitrovic for at least 3 game weeks, but we all know how things go.

Bamford was hardly involved on Saturday - gifted a goal - will likely share time with Rodrigo. . .

I was thinking the same - being subbed of at 60min.

Fixtures aren’t the best either, but thinking while Leeds’ legs are still fresh, they could cause some damage.

Just expecting a price rise in the next 2 days - so was thinking of joining the wagon...

Here are my thoughts over my Coady pick.

Wolves have already signed Marcel and are looking to buy Telles, who plays at LWB. So in my mind, Saiss’ starting position is also at risk as Marcel can slot into that position should wolves buy another LWB.

Saiss scored two goals and got two assists in 30 games last season. If we extrapolate his points returns over a 38 game week period, he would only score 12 more points than Coady.

With this in mind and the fact that Saiss’ starting position is always going to be at risk, picking Coady just seemed sensible to avoid any unecessary transfers in the future.

So in essence, Saiss could be the next Vinagre..

Any thoughts/comments on the above are welcomed

My thinking exactly. The club captain is boring but solid and nailed. I wanted him left in my squad for the duration as I focus on mid and fwd lines for transfers.

Exactly. I want to focus my transfers on the big hitters and not on some poxy defenders who could get an attacking return here and there..

Or you could do what I did. Have Saiss for now until Wolves actually make another signing and if it then looks like he's then out of the team you can transfer him to Coady.

Completely agree with you mate but Saiss does not produce Alonso type returns so it didn’t seem justifiable to buy someone who might get a total of 3 to 4 attacking returns during the entirety of the season.. Not sure whether I am trying to convince you or myself actually..

Think that was a sensible thought process, but until further transfers are made he's pretty safe. Nuno's comments led me to believe Vinagre was safe enough for first few weeks, but I stand corrected on that.

Disagree. Saiss looks very nailed and big threat at set pieces. Marcal is backup for Jonny. Saiss already worth more than Coady with his goal today even if he's benched for a few games.

There was no guarantee that Saiss was going to score today. Obviously in hindsight, he was a golden pick so congratulations to all those who had the courage to go for him..
