Can Watkins transform Aston Villa attack and offer FPL points potential?

Ollie Watkins (£6.0m) landed at Villa Park last week for a club record fee of £28m, and could be the answer to many of their problems. Could he help Fantasy Premier League managers out as well?

The 24-year-old, who scored 26 goals in the Championship last term, has penned a five-year contract, and is in line to make his Premier League debut in Gameweek 2, when Aston Villa entertain Sheffield United.

Villans boss Dean Smith had been desperate to sign a new striker, and rightly so. Villa’s forwards contributed a meagre six league goals between them last season, and just two, via Wesley (£6.0m) and Mbwana Samatta (£6.0m), in 2020.

Upon signing, Smith said of his new recruit:

“Ollie has developed into one of the most sought-after strikers in the country and we are looking forward to seeing him show his great qualities in an Aston Villa shirt. He is a hugely determined character who has both the ability and personality to succeed at the highest level.” – Dean Smith

Priced up at £6.0m by FPL, Watkins will be hoping to build on that stunning 26-goal campaign in the top tier, but for Fantasy managers, is he a viable option for our forward lines, and if so, when might be the optimum time to invest?

In this new Scout Report, we’ll attempt to answer those questions, and assess his credentials ahead of his debut.

History and Statistics

Newton Abbot-born Watkins started his career at Exeter City, where he progressed through the academy ranks.

Having impressed for the under-18 side, a first-team debut followed in 2014, but it was a successful loan spell at Weston-super-Mare when he started turning heads, scoring 10 goals in 25 appearances for the Conference South side.

“He has a lot of talent, he could run with the ball superbly with both feet and could do the bread and butter stuff very well. His talent eventually shone through and it’s proven to be the case at Exeter. He’s got speed and as well as playing up front, is very competent on the wing. You can also play him through the middle due to his great first touch. We played a 3-4-3 formation and he played in that top three. He was very flexible and offered us so many options.” – Former Weston-super-Mare manager, Ryan Northmore

Once back at Exeter, Watkins kicked on and racked up 21 league goals across the following two seasons, which was enough for Brentford to make their move. Signed for a fee thought to be just under £2m, Watkins was initially used as a wide forward, where he scored 10 goals in each of his first two seasons.

However, it will undoubtedly be the 2019/20 campaign he’ll be remembered for most.

After the sale of Neal Maupay (£6.5m) to Brighton and Hove Albion, Watkins made the switch to a central striking role. The change worked wonders, as Watkins finished joint-top scorer in the Championship with 26 goals, with Brentford only narrowly missing out on promotion to the Premier League.

Amazingly, every single one of those 26 goals came from open play and when you exclude penalties, Watkins scored more league goals than any other player in English football last season.

“I normally call him the beast. He’s a remarkable player and person. He’s so dedicated. Of course, he wants to be top scorer, but that’s not his main aim. He’s so dedicated to improve every single day, so he’s a coach’s dream because of course we want to focus on little details. We’ve been working very hard on his positions and how to run in the box and the link up play. Overall, he’s just improved massively as a player and also as part of the leading group. He’s driving the team. Look out there how hard he works – it’s a joy to have a striker like that. He’s one of the hardest, if not the hardest working offensive player in the league, and he’s also the top scorer. That’s not a bad combination.” – Brentford manager, Thomas Frank

Now at Villa, Watkins will be reunited with Smith, who signed him from Exeter City when he was Brentford manager, with the player adding:

“I am so excited to join Aston Villa and to reunite with Dean Smith as my Head Coach. I cannot wait to wear the famous claret and blue in the Premier League. I want to do something special here and score some goals.” – Ollie Watkins

Profile

Watkins is 5ft 11, and is used to leading the line having been deployed as a lone striker in a 4-3-3 at Brentford.

He is quick, strong and extremely hard-working, and is best summed up as a complete forward, who is equally comfortable running the channels, or dropping deep to link play.

When looking at Watkins shot map from 2019/20, what shines through is that the vast majority of his shots came inside the area, while the breakdown of last season’s goals also backs up his all-rounder tag: 16 were scored from inside the penalty area, eight from inside the six-yard box, with two coming from long-range.

He is also capable with both feet – he netted 10 with his right-foot, seven with his left-foot and eight with his head.

That heading stat is worth noting, considering Villa finished sixth in the Premier League for crosses last season, with 798, behind only Manchester City, Liverpool, Sheffield United, Chelsea and Everton.

It didn’t take long for Watkins to convert from a cross either, as he scored the winning goal in Saturday’s 1-0 friendly victory over Manchester United, with a diving header from Trézéguet’s (£5.5m) delivery. He also opened the scoring against Burton Albion on Tuesday night.

His fitness in recent seasons is also a huge positive. Brentford played 46 league matches last term, plus three more in the play-offs, with Watkins playing every single match and missing just 10 minutes throughout. The season before he missed just five league games, and a single fixture the campaign before that.

Prospects

The prospect of seeing Watkins line up alongside Jack Grealish (£7.0m) is exciting.

Last season, barring Kevin De Bruyne (£11.5m), no player created more chances than Grealish, while as a team, Villa ranked sixth for chances created, with 369, and tenth for shots (456). The issue was that they only managed 41 goals.

If Watkins can start converting some of those Grealish chances, then you’d expect Villa to push on and avoid another relegation battle this season.

Adjusting to Villa’s system shouldn’t take long, with both Brentford and Villa favouring a 4-3-3, while his position in the starting XI is also secure, as he will immediately move ahead of Samatta, Keinan Davis (£4.5m) and Wesley in the pecking order. Essentially, it will be his place to lose.

So, when might be the ideal time to invest?

I’ve seen some suggest Gameweek 9, but I think we should be looking at Gameweek 6 when Villa have six home ties in 10 matches, against Leeds United, Southampton, Brighton and Hove Albion, Newcastle United, Burnley and Crystal Palace.

Add in a couple of decent looking away trips to West Ham United and West Bromwich Albion, and I think this run of fixtures looks pretty appealing.

Villa’s fixtures from Gameweeks 6 to 15

Villa have been crying out for a clinical finisher who is able to score with his head and feet ever since Tammy Abraham (£7.5) returned to Chelsea in the summer of 2019, and in Watkins, I think they may well have found their man.

That being said, the Premier League is a completely different level to the Championship, so some caution is required.

Nevertheless, FPL managers have reason to be excited with Watkins coming in at just £6.0m.

Right now, I’d suggest scouting him over the next few weeks, and if progressing as I expect him too, make a move ahead of Gameweek 6.

His statistics from the last campaign certainly suggest he should be able to make an immediate impression, and if he were to hit around 12 league goals this season, I think that would be deemed a success, and would no doubt go a long way towards helping Villa avoid another season languishing near the bottom of the table.

Villa have pretty good fixtures overall actually.

Grealish now has a forward that might be able to score some of his chances... Looks a possible option.

From sole striker when this article was published minutes ago, to multiple strikers, it looks like Grealish the provider is the better punt than Watkins. Pity, as there is a dearth of strikers in the budget range.

Traore plays RW tho. Rashica also a LW.

I think Grealish moves to CM alongside McGinn and one of Nakamba and Luiz.

With Ollie nailed up top? In that case with 3 lines of service, Watkins would be the plum pick.

I'm absolutely certain Ollie will be nailed. They paid over 30M for him and he's scored in both of his matches he's played for the team.

Rashica is excellent, would consider for FPL if decently priced & not chucked into interchangeable rotation with Trezeguet, El Ghazi et al.

Hope you're having a good week?

    This team gtg or anything worth a hit;

    McCarthy
    Egan Dier TAA KWP
    Salah Auba(c) ASM Bruno
    Werner Mitro

    1 ITB.

Aiming to bring in KDB for Auba next week then probably Mitro to Wilson and upgrade a defender the following week for -4.

Any suggestions are much appreciated 🙂

    Cheers.

Get MC and MU players in without a fuss.
Price rises tonight on key players no doubt
Lots of expectations dashed - let down players, Liverpool defence, Seriously if they let in 3 to leeds.....just cos players perform on the past...

If you can change your team with 5 swaps......just do it.

      I did.....btw

You can lose both Arsenal, get rid of Vinagre, get rid of ASM when his fixtures turn. Kane probably also gets moved on for more cost efficient options like Martial or Jimenez.

I don't understand why people are so hastily moving on from Son, he was (positionally) the most forward player for Spurs and he still looked good. Expect the bandwagon to revert once he scores an inevitable brace.

Martinez the best 4.5m keeper this season over McCarthy and Ryan?

Villa weren't anywhere near as good defensively as Saints and Brighton last year, in xGC terms anyway, but they showed promise of improvement post-lockdown.

They defended way too high for a team with pace up top like Zaha and Townsend and it was so easy to just drop the ball in behind, Ralphie H must surely iron that out next game...

I've got McC and Adams and I'm not worried. They started extremely flat, like they weren't mentally prepared. But they bucked up in the second half. Many teams started slowly in fact. I'm quite confident they'll go out next game better prepared and we'll see the real Saints.

Post lockdown they were immense. Defenders started to come into their own and they’ve really improved on their team this window. An Everton-like transformation makes promising reading. I’m going Martínez/Steer in goal and I’m going to have Targett rotating in for the nice fixtures

Check the Villa defensive stats from 1-29 and then 30-38 after lockdown. Serious improvement and indicative of something they worked hard on to improve. Should be about 10-12 clean sheets for them this season plus saves a plenty for Martinez which should make him pick of the 4.5s

Yeah, it was a phenomenal improvement. But I'm wary of using just 10 games as a measure.

Lockdown was a weird event. There were also lots of teams with nothing to play for. Unreliable period to draw from really.

I don't think any one will stand out over course of the season - there will be periods where each outscores the other (including Meslier + Johnstone as well).

Critical thing for me is save points. One reason I don't really like McCarthy - Saints tend to concede high qual chances so he can't rack em up.

That's my concern with McCarthy too. A high line doesn't breed save points. It's usually more big chances and less shots from outside the box.

Lot of people investing in Everton on one showing against possibly the worst Spurs performance I have ever seen, with mitigating Covid circumstances of course. All I will say is I have been burned by Everton and a decent fixture run an awful lot of times. For me plenty of time to make sure they are the real deal.

I think that most transfers have happened now for Son as he was just a placeholder, 0.1 drop at most. Now it's time for him to deliver for us faithful owners 🙂

Looking at transfers in/out, I think a lot are doing Werner -> DCL; Son -> Fernandes.

Or they're dropping Son down to a ~7.5mid in order to fund Ings -> Martial.

So he's getting it both barrels for the switch to a UTD player.

I'm sure he will still be a decent asset, but to me Spurs have had the life sucked out of them by Jose when compared to the stuff they played under Poch. Don't see them racking up goals unless Kane goes on a hot streak.

Wildcard is fine as a strategy this week, people should stop bashing it and acting like we are lunatics for doing it. Most of us got our price structure completely wrong, Pool assets taking up too much money in defence with their defensive frailties, popular punts like Vinagre and Pereira flopping etc.

An early jump to Utd assets and loading up on Everton before they become template is a perfectly good strategy. I’ve got the likes of Richarlison, Digne, Bruno and Jimenez and couldn’t be happier to get in early. And this is all with a score of 80, tldr, don’t let this place make you question your choices if your reasoning is sound.

I still think though that just keeping 2 of TAA/Robbo/VVD is a very viable strategy. Can't just let one week have you make that decision.

I'm on WC and I'm thinking to have TAA and VVD because at some point Liverpool WILL keep 7/8 clean sheets in a row and they'll be raking in the points. I agree though, I got 37 points last week and my team was a mess.

The price rises will be key.

They weren't top notch at the back at the start of last season. Then from November - February kept tons of clean sheets. Look at the points, VVD for 6.5 scored WAY more than any other striker in that price bracket apart from Ings who I think started at 6.0? Same with Robbo, who is really attacking.

They just will start racking up a lot of clean sheets sooner or later.

That's the thing, many are betting that it will be later. With the exception of a couple of mavericks I think most people are keeping TAA which means that IF we see evidence of Liverpool's back line becoming more solid again, it's only 1 transfer to bring back VVD which is completely feasible. I for one will have Digne in the 6.0 bracket who will probably have gone up to 6.2-6.3 by the time Liverpool's nice fixtures roll around, VVD probably fallen in price by then as well

The mad thing is - Liverpool had the best XGc in the league at the weekend (bar Arsenal)

To concede 3 goals from 0.32 XGc is quite odd

You can look at that stat both ways. Some teams give up loads of big chances and have a high XGc but concede few goals. Maybe they have Pope in goal. Others have a low XGc but concede anyway. Maybe their defence is making 'uncharacteristic' errors. Say what you like about Van Dijk but he's been off the boil for quite a while, TAA has been a defensive liability and Gomez hasn't exactly been great either. Maybe they turn it back on, but surely it would be better to see some evidence of that first.

VVD has probably just became *too* relaxed as life is normally such a stroll for him - but I don't disagree they didn't look solid against Leeds - but they are definitely a funny old team defensively Liverpool - they confuse & catch people out quite regularly

At GW15 last year for example (their nadir defensively - 2 cleansheets from their first 15 games) the FFS knives had been out for them for weeks - but they were actually still the best defence in the league on both pure goals conceded (along with City & Sheffield United) and XGc

The problem was that they had just conceded a single goal in 13 of their 15 games which meant they bizarrely had 2 cleansheets to City, Leciester & Sheffield United's 5-6 cleansheets at that point, it was always going to iron itself out eventually despite the "they're not worth it" posts at the time - 10 cleansheets in their next 15 games etc

If they keep conceding 0.32 XGc (as they did vs. Leeds) you'd have to think cleansheets aren't far away

I think in hindsight the signs were definitely there - you yourself being the poster boy for triple LIV defence at the time 😀 As you say conceding a single goal in 13 of the 15 games was bizarre, but in context, many of those goals were either late consolations (e.g. 3-1 Arsenal), random screamers (Newcastle), or Adrian being Adrian. At the same time we had conclusive proof that Liverpool were the best team in the league, able to grind out wins despite conceding all these solitary goals, gunning for the title, and after GW12/13 or so Alisson was back. In hindsight therefore it was really quite obvious that Liverpool would go on a great defensive run. The way I see it there were 2 reasons why more people didn't jump on the bandwagon early - one reason being the coinciding with December's fixture congestion (TAA and Robbo benched in alternate games GW15/16 iirc) and the second being the GW18 blank.

So what's different this time round? It seems like Liverpool are leaking goals again. This time though there's no Adrian to shoulder the blame and Liverpool just conceded 3 at home to Leeds, not the solitary goal like last season. They've also been in poor form as a team since February, including the community shield and pre-season friendlies for this season, which is a far cry from their form throughout GW1-15 of last season where they won 14 and drew 1. I also don't expect them to win the league again this season.

Overall my gut is it's way (way! ) too early to write them off defensively

Post restart defensive form is kind of discounted for me as they were half drunk from celebrating for most of the games

And whilst they did concede 3 goals at the weekend, they didn't concede many high quality chances

Definitely willing to give them benefit of the doubt again, far too much quality in that defence relative to other teams for them not to deliver on it eventually imo, I can probably be patient in the short term, if that's what's needed 🙂

For sure... to be fair, I probably can see a world where selling TAA is viable - but it's more if he is injured or something really really catastrophic has happened Liverpool - e.g. two or three of VVD/Allison/Henderson all long term injuries, Klopp left, and/or they really properly capitulated looked like they were going to finish mid-table etc

But those all seem very black swan type scenarios

When all personnel are available, a bit of poor form on the part of Liverpool wouldn't really be enough to consider it tbh

I think the biggest problem is the people using WC are showing their teams are pretty much the same as the GW1 template. Very few WC taking advtange of the united/city/burnley players.

Fair enough, some choices are questionable. I think playing aggressively and loading up on Wolves, Everton, Utd is very viable, personally

This is fair too, but I think most are not doing this and it's more 'A few players blanked, so I'm going to WC and try again'

Richarlison is a great pick. Listened to the fpl Wire podcast last night and am convinced he will score well this week.

However your average WC team on here contains the likes of Willian, Hendrick and Castagne so some criticism is necessary

Agreed. You're going a bit earlier on MUN and United. I prefer waiting for City and Wolves. But the reasoning is sound.

Aye, that makes sense. I wouldn’t want to lose Werner and have to say was impressed by James against Spurs and Everton’s fixtures are mint. So Pulisic to James and Ings to Martial with 0.5 to upgrade elsewhere would be my choice.

Your option A would leave you too weak elsewhere I think. But totally understand why you’d want to see more of James.

What happened to the concept of wildcarding from a position of strength?

It was something Joe talked about often on the Scoutcast in the past and I think it has really got merit.

Especially in this season. We were all forced away from MUN and MCI players so a wildcard would be bringing in lots of new players. Same can be said for Wolves and Chelsea. I didn't pick Wolves or any Everton because my plan was to wait until GW3.

Well now it's here and I'm seriously considering hitting the button even though I got 79 points and by all accounts a good start. Last year I held my wildcard for way too long. In the end I ended up making something like 5 changes and one of them was to get rid of TAA because of a blank for Rashford. We all know what happened next at Leicester...

It felt like I wasted my early season momentum. I was ranked 8K in GW3 and thought I could make a run of it, but being too safe and riding out the players I had meant I fell behind pretty quickly and was languishing around the 100K mark for weeks.

GW3 marks some very clear fixture swings and a really nice opportunity to get ahead. Wolves, Everton and City are in ascendance. Perhaps the common saying of 'when you're ahead, get further ahead' should come in.

Yes, there are definitely some merits to an early WC, particularly this season.

I got same points as you and will be holding off for now, but it's tempting for sure.

Nothing better to WC when you dont "have" to. Pick the players others dont own who have nice fixtures. Go for it.

I'm in the same boat as you. 75pts but got a few issues I'd like to sort out and tempted by my WC as a 'foot on the throat' sort of tactic to keep up momentum and get on board early with Bruno, KDB, Digne, DCL/Richarlison etc. In the past my best seasons have been when I've made a good start and I trust my ability as an FPL manager to WC early and keep the momentum going rather than worrying too much about the herd saying 'wHaT, you WC'd in GW2?!'. Points on the board is points on the board.

I haven't pushed the button yet but I am very tempted. The players I want will likely by 10.7 and 11.7 by GW3.

GW3 is when I might do it. Not this week. I'd like to wait out Wolves-City and Chelsea-Pool. But after that, it's really smooth sailing for Wolves, Everton, Chelsea and City of which I only have Chelsea right now.

Early transfers don't matter if you're on WC. I get that that's a problem if you're not 100% set on wildcarding that week. For me, a GW3 wildcard depends a lot on what happens in the Wolves-City game, which horrendously is on Monday night, so it might force me into activating WC on Saturday if price changes happen over the weekend

By the end of GW2 we will know who starts for each team (except maybe City because they're annoying). And then there's a beautiful fixture swing. You wait too long you'll fall behind and then when you WC you'll be WC'ing to a team the leaders already have because they are two weeks ahead of you.

Tinkering continues - WC used (always my plan). Team A or B?

                A:

                McCarthy
                Digne Doherty Saiss
                Salah Fernandes JRod ASM
                Werner Richarlison Jimenez

                Nyland Justin Bissouma Mitchell

                B:
Thoughts? No TAA going to bite me?

                McCarthy
                Digne TAA Justin
                Salah Fernandes JRod Soucek
                Werner Richarlison Jimenez

                Ramsdale
                TAA Doc Taylor KWP Ferguson
                Auba Son Havertz Pereira Bissouma
                Werner Ings Mitro

Disaster of a first week, with 33 points due to the arrogance of thinking I know better than the crowd and going without Salah.

£0.5m in bank and 1ft. Thinking Havertz (who looked poor) and Ings to Bruno and DCL to try and get ahead of the game. Or, Ings v Martial, then WC next week?

Any thoughts? Last GW made me want to never play Fantasy Football again!

Difference between a good week and a bad one was just Salah (c), hardly a cause for dispair. 98% of the season to go.

                  I'd do your first move

Stick with it, Salah scored 3, 2 of which we're pens, so you weren't too far off getting it right. It's always a big risk going without such a player, but don't let one week define your team.

I wonder if Havertz will even start vs Liverpool. Frank will surely be concerned after that Brighton game that he isn't up to the intensity of a game like Liverpool

He will start, but in a central role. He did not suit the wing position.

I got the impression the whole midfield had absolutely no idea what to do tactically. I don't think they'd been prepared. I'd assumed over a week Frank will have them sorted out.

He's being described as the natural heir to Jesse Lingard's "great potential" throne in some circles

Out of position and not fit was a bit of a big ask.
Frank could just shuffle the players he had last week in different positions.

I think it’ll take more time for their attack to click, if all 4 main attackers are fit it’s 4 players who have never played together properly

I'm keeping Havertz. Hope he shows more against Pool. If they can put up a decent performance, I will likely hold fire on a WC as well because they have great fixtures. If not, out he goes and the WC is in play!
