Football Index: Can form and fixtures make new-look Everton a good bet?

Sponsored by Football Index

Into week two of my adventures in the land of Football Index (FI) and I’m learning some lessons already.

Just as a reminder, FI is, in essence, a stockmarket where people use real money to bet on footballers, with the value of these shares then going up or down based on market forces.

Players can also win money on these shares through a series of dividends, which are individual pay-outs based on match day performances, positive coverage in the media and consistent excellence across each month of action.

And the shares I’ve bought in the last week or so have certainly been on a few… journeys recently.

My pick for last week, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, is a great case in point. The Arsenal man enjoyed a decent Gameweek 1 at Fulham, scoring his first goal of the season in a 3-0 win.

That was particularly pleasing for his massive Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ownership – close to 50% now – as he was the captaincy choice of many, so brought in double points.

Over on FI, his performance score of 127 – based on a wide range of metrics, including goals scored, chances missed etc – was well above his average of the past few months, but not good enough to win extra cash from a match day dividend when the likes of Mohamed Salah are hitting hat-tricks and recording a performance score of 358.

Not that dividends and Aubameyang haven’t been a success for me so far. Ongoing contract talks and his solid performance at Craven Cottage have meant he’s been in the news consistently, thus winning me media dividend pay-outs.

I mentioned last week that the Arsenal man was going to be a longer-term bet, and that’s just as well based on his yo-yoing share price.

I bought into him at £2.22 a share. That peaked at £2.53 the day before the season started, and at the time of writing, he’s trading at £2.27. One to hold, especially with the dividend opportunities that await in the Europa League.
To add to a positive week, Aubameyang has just signed his new three-year contract, so was able to win media dividends through this breaking news.

As for my other two bets, Callum Wilson’s share price is (currently) plenty higher than when I bought in and he’s also won me the most in dividends, while Leeds man Rodrigo’s key moment in the 4-3 madness at Anfield was to give away the penalty that won Liverpool the match.

So well done Rodrigo, you mugged me off there. But he’s another one I’ve bet on for the long term, so I’m maintaining a Zen-like calm. For now.

Overall my portfolio is up, so Gameweek 1 has been a qualified success.

This Week I Am Mostly Buying Into… Everton.

One game does not a season make, but the world and their life partner were left very impressed by the Toffees’ away win at Spurs.

James Rodriguez’s debut was a belter and, at the time of writing, he leads the way for Gameweek 1 chances created (five), although it was Lucas Digne who ended up with the assist for Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s winner.

I’m tempted by all of Everton’s attackers, and new man Abdoulaye Doucoure shouldn’t be ignored either – he created four chances against Tottenham, although he had no attempts on goal, whereas James managed three.

The jury is, therefore, out on exactly which Everton player I’ll bet on, but it will definitely be one of them, especially as they’ll be entertaining West Brom next; a team that allowed a Gameweek-high four big chances at the weekend.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men have a great schedule from now through to the middle of December, with their two trickiest matches – a Merseyside derby and Manchester United – both taking place at Goodison Park.

The blessed union of form and fixtures is a beautiful thing in FPL. It’s time to see if the same applies to FI.

Paul Joyce "Liverpool have stepped up their interest in Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara. They will look to sign him regardless of another midfielder leaving. Around £27m"

I would guess him or jones on loan to go thou.

Unless you have planned for 2FT next week, just get him out. It's the reason we have transfers.

Although I don't think his transfer have change much since yesterday, so might make it into GW2 without a drop.

Then again, maybe he gets a shot next week 😉

    Ryan / Steer
    Coleman, Shaw, Saiss, Lamptey, Mitchell,
Auba, KDB, J Rodríguez, Fernandes (Bissouma)
    DCL, Martial, Watkins

Lamptey could become Taylor from Burnley? & Watkins Mitro as the fixtures are good? - Opinions (0 in bank)

Also next week I could do Auba to Salah to bring Salah back or do Auba to Sterling

    Martinez | Steer
    Digne | Saiss | Coady | Ayling | Ferguson
    Auba | Fernandes | Rodriguez | Klich | Bissouma
    Martial | Jimenez | Richarlison

Wildcard team, I activated it off the back of an 80 point gw so felt a little odd but with price rises/falls and a number of failed punts, I felt it made sense to move whilst in a position of strength

Emi - Solid defence since covid, love the guy as an Arsenal fan and he's honestly a world class keeper. Will improve them.

Steer - Back-up for Emi, but could be Nyland

Digne - Not sure whether he's worth 6, if anyone has any opinion on him it'd be appreciated.

Saiss - Great player, looked amazing GW1 and the best value defense in the league. A must have and I can't see him being dropped.

Coady - Most secure 5 mil option, will tick along with that fixture run. I was contemplating him or Podence as my third Wolves player, went for Connor due to nailedness and my doubts over whether Podence will ever really haul beyond single figures.

Auba - Will sell for City next GW, best option for captain this week

Fernandes - Sold Salah for him as that was always my strategy; not going to let 2 penalties sway me. Granted his underlying stats are crazy, but I won't captain Salah in the next four. Bruno is great value even at 10.5.

Rodriguez - Immense debut, can't see him being a Modric, he will create a lot of chances, and will haul in the next 3. Owned him last week and a little annoyed he blanked as others now realise how great an option he is. Ahh well.

Klich - On pens, plays similarly to Soucek in terms of getting forward, and got praise from Bielsa after GW1, massive player for them and will tick along.

Bissouma - Impressed me vs Chelsea, definitely the best 4.5 option, likes to have a dig and can get forward.

Martial - 6G 4A post restart, he'll score most weeks and is the focal point. His underlying stats are great and whilst the fixtures aren't amazing, they're still good enough.

Richarlison - Excited about owning him, was wasteful against Spurs but James cutting in really opens space for him. Can see him hauling this weekend, especially with WBA being so bad down that side of the pitch.

Jimenez - Beast, will tick along, never captain never bench. Solid solid fixtures and a great VFM option.

    Thoughts appreciated as always

I forgot to say I have 1.5 in the bank, going to monitor Foden and Greenwood after their controversy; they're young it could effect their form.

Like it a lot and have a similar set up but went fro Wilson at 6.5 in the forwards who i see as great value but just means I have to choose between two of Rich, Jim and Martial.

Not sold on Coady who has such a low ceiling, would consider Marcal over him

Marcal had 7 touches all game in the opposition half, I think Coady over him for nailness makes sense

Can't see Marcal being 100% nailed, I don't want to touch my defense now so nailedness is my priority. He also didn't look that attacking.

Wilson's fixtures don't scream goals but he's a decent option. I'd go Martial and Jimmy for you, Rich is my exciting punt but he's not a banker like the other two.

Looks excellent. Two changes I’d make are Mitchell in for Ferguson and Klich out. Mitchell is already starting and could easily rise, his place to lose if palace keep on keeping clean sheets. Leeds fans know better but won’t Klich be most likely to make way if they sign De Paul from Udinese?

Cheers mate, the lack of Klich popularity in these responses is changing my thinking. Will mull on it. Can see PVA coming back, he's an established flair PL player and think Roy likes him.

    Bale to Spurs done!

Gareth Bale to Tottenham, here we go! Last details to be sorted about salary [shared with Real Madrid] and Gareth will fly tomorrow to London. He’ll complete medicals and join #THFC - one year loan. Mourinho approved the deal. Reguilon expected for tomorrow too [100% done].

      Werner, Havertz, Thiago, Bale

Huge transfer, he's only 31 and still high quality. If he can stay fit this is a game changer

He will stay fit like he did for wales

Is it a new Twitter thing to keep saying "done" and "100%" on transfers which clearly aren't done or 100% yet? About the 4th time I have seen this today!

Mate there's like 0.1% chance that it fails. 100% is an approximation of 99.9%

See, I would say done and 100% mean finalised, all over, end of story etc, and I'm sure historically this is in line with what was being reported in the media. Just interesting to me that this seems to have evolved to be a little looser these days. That's all 🙂

Depends on the source, when certain sources say 100% then it's basically done bar a dream John Obi Mikel signing for utd and then signing for Chelsea scenario

I keep asking this as I'm confused but would like some more opinions

Havertz to James with FT or save and do Ben Davies to Saiss next week? (other move will be Auba to KDB)

First I had a plan WC GW3 (last year did same and OR 4k) but because of covid and possible coming postponed games I didn't do it. Had Leno, James and Justin so this cost me a lots points.

Now anyway Im thinking to hit WC GW3 to get Wolves players in and get rid Soton players.

Anyone else on same boat? Build a long term team but probably going to hit WC GW3.

Would save WC for later stages - loads of double GWs

Any chance the stupid phone icon thing can be moved to the right of the screen from the left? It keeps ending up in the "post comment" box and if you accidentally touch it you lose everything you have just typed out and it triggers an urge to kill. Thanks 🙂

Fek why didn't gabriel rise again either. It would have been so much easier to assume manchester players are price lockedd

Makes sense, although Jose has said Kane will play every match, although not 90 mins each game so looks set to play a poor Southampton side.

Had a very good GW1, but still I think there's smth to do about my team:

          Ramsdale (Steer)
TAA - James - Justin (KWP, Mitchell)
Salah - Willian - Son - Havertz (Soucek)
          Werner - Wilson (Rodrigo)

I have 1.0M ITB, so these are my options:
          A) Havertz > Rashford
          B) Son & Havertz > Fernandes & Rodriguez (-4)
          C) Roll the transfer
