Football Index: Can form and fixtures make new-look Everton a good bet?

Sponsored by Football Index

Into week two of my adventures in the land of Football Index (FI) and I’m learning some lessons already.

Just as a reminder, FI is, in essence, a stockmarket where people use real money to bet on footballers, with the value of these shares then going up or down based on market forces.

Players can also win money on these shares through a series of dividends, which are individual pay-outs based on match day performances, positive coverage in the media and consistent excellence across each month of action.

And the shares I’ve bought in the last week or so have certainly been on a few… journeys recently.

My pick for last week, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, is a great case in point. The Arsenal man enjoyed a decent Gameweek 1 at Fulham, scoring his first goal of the season in a 3-0 win.

That was particularly pleasing for his massive Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ownership – close to 50% now – as he was the captaincy choice of many, so brought in double points.

Over on FI, his performance score of 127 – based on a wide range of metrics, including goals scored, chances missed etc – was well above his average of the past few months, but not good enough to win extra cash from a match day dividend when the likes of Mohamed Salah are hitting hat-tricks and recording a performance score of 358.

Not that dividends and Aubameyang haven’t been a success for me so far. Ongoing contract talks and his solid performance at Craven Cottage have meant he’s been in the news consistently, thus winning me media dividend pay-outs.

I mentioned last week that the Arsenal man was going to be a longer-term bet, and that’s just as well based on his yo-yoing share price.

I bought into him at £2.22 a share. That peaked at £2.53 the day before the season started, and at the time of writing, he’s trading at £2.27. One to hold, especially with the dividend opportunities that await in the Europa League.
To add to a positive week, Aubameyang has just signed his new three-year contract, so was able to win media dividends through this breaking news.

As for my other two bets, Callum Wilson’s share price is (currently) plenty higher than when I bought in and he’s also won me the most in dividends, while Leeds man Rodrigo’s key moment in the 4-3 madness at Anfield was to give away the penalty that won Liverpool the match.

So well done Rodrigo, you mugged me off there. But he’s another one I’ve bet on for the long term, so I’m maintaining a Zen-like calm. For now.

Overall my portfolio is up, so Gameweek 1 has been a qualified success.

This Week I Am Mostly Buying Into… Everton.

One game does not a season make, but the world and their life partner were left very impressed by the Toffees’ away win at Spurs.

James Rodriguez’s debut was a belter and, at the time of writing, he leads the way for Gameweek 1 chances created (five), although it was Lucas Digne who ended up with the assist for Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s winner.

I’m tempted by all of Everton’s attackers, and new man Abdoulaye Doucoure shouldn’t be ignored either – he created four chances against Tottenham, although he had no attempts on goal, whereas James managed three.

The jury is, therefore, out on exactly which Everton player I’ll bet on, but it will definitely be one of them, especially as they’ll be entertaining West Brom next; a team that allowed a Gameweek-high four big chances at the weekend.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men have a great schedule from now through to the middle of December, with their two trickiest matches – a Merseyside derby and Manchester United – both taking place at Goodison Park.

The blessed union of form and fixtures is a beautiful thing in FPL. It’s time to see if the same applies to FI.

Would Thiago decrease trent and ronbo’s attacking returns? Considering he may now take some set pieces, and the channels may now be more central rather than the wings. What do you guys think?

I think he'll improve them personally, he'll keep feeding them the ball no trouble at all. Don't think he'll take set pieces off them either.

If he leads to Liv scoring more goals then TAA and Robbo will get more. Why neutralise 2 of your best assets for the sake of one.

Will definitely have an effect. I would guess that it could affect TAA's playing style more than Robbo's.

Soton seemed quite flat, don’t think 2 up top works and they need more industry in midfield.

Ings as a lone striker I like, in a front 2 not so keen

Didn't realise Alli was dropping in price, but would you take a -4 to switch to James Rodriguez?

Not ideal but if he only plays 45 mins opening game and linked in a swap deal with Bale, it seems an obvious mistake to fix ASAP.

Gone for a no-Chelsea and (temporarily) no-Trent 4-4-2 WC team.

Arguably a bit of a waste as I already had no Chelsea and Fernandes on the bench, and I'm keeping Salah, but I love those Everton and Wolves assets. I also knee-jerked in Reece James on Monday which was ill-advised and I regret it heavily. Without that I don't think I'd be WCing. That said, I think jumping in on Manchester assets early will could be rewarded. Thoughts? I'm pretty settled apart from Laporte or Digne, more curious if anyone is going a similar route.

        Leno | 4.5
        Digne | Shaw | Saiss | Coady | Lewis
        Salah | Fernandes | Aubameyang | Rodriguez | 4.5
        Wilson | Richarlison | 4.5

Yeah still juggling the ideas to accommodate them mate, the 0.5 in the bank and the Aubameyang slot is initially to be able to accommodate one of them easily, but I can tweak the team a little bit downgrading a couple of players and upgrade Colombian J-Rod

Downgrading TAA would be the boldest move if you want to accommodate KdB (from James). I know, it won't be enough, but almost there. You could on top downgrade Wilson to cheaper forward and rotate with Podence (who - by the way - has great fixtures after MCI). Brewster, if he gets to West Brom?

Ooooh now that is seriously bold mate!! Haha but just as seriously intriguing!! Will have a jiggle with that one now!! Cheers for that! Would be quite scary not to own TAA tho, yeah I like Podence a lot mate I wanted him in my team from the start but the first two fixtures and rotation out my off, but now I’m definitely wanting him and at that price it means like you say you can rotate him, that’s my initial plan to do so with Harrison or Klich, whichever I end up going for.

No way! Werner could do well against Liverpool's high line and he has West Brom after that. Plus half the game owns him.

Me during preseason: "The key to FPL success is definitely minimising transfers in defence."

Gameweek 1: -4 to do Vinagre to Saiss.

Doubling up on Villa keepers really limits your options for their players elsewhere. New signings are coming in and they could offer really value in the coming weeks with some favourable fixtures

I have Martinez as a an ARS player so that shouldn't be a problem I don't think.

Who are they looking at signing? Do you think Watkins is a good option?

        5. Chandler Bing
          • 7 Years

Insanely similar to what I've built other than Rashford and Werner instead of Bruno and Jimenez. I also don't have Foden tho.

How confident are you about Coleman? I heard he could be benched anytime soon.

          1. CrouchDown
            • 11 Years

Yeah Foden is definitely risky, who did you go for in that price bracket?

I think Coleman will be okay personally. Jonjoe is back but Coleman is captain and played well last week. Shaw is the obvious alternative.

        Is anyone else really confused?

Remove Son or give him another chance?
Worth taking a -4 hit to bring in Fernandes?
Remove Werner and bring in Martial or worth keeping Werner for another week?
Should we try and get rid of Bavies now?
Just save and wait until next week to have 2 FTs and more flexibility?
Load up on Everton players because they are looking real good?

So many questions, its just easier to do nothing

I try to temper it by reminding myself that it's just one GW.

Son is a proven FPL player, but just like every FPL player he's going to blank sometimes.

Werner isn't an FPL proven asset yet, but what do you do if you take him out and he scores in GW2 and Martial blanks?

Personally, I think 1 week is far too small a sample size to be basing transfer decisions on, especially ones involving players with a history of good FPL scores.

But, ultimately, its your team so you have to go with what you feel is best.

thats the logical approach, the issue is the possibilities of price changes. The minute Martial or B. Fernandes get a price change it becomes so much more difficult to get them in your team
