Alli not in the Spurs squad as Armstrong returns for Saints

After being replaced at half-time last Sunday against Everton, Dele Alli (£7.9m) has been dropped from the Spurs squad altogether for Sunday lunchtime’s clash with Southampton.

The attacking midfielder was selected by some FPL managers as a cheaper alternative to Son Heung-min (£8.9m), in the hopes that he would recreate the excellent form at the beginning of Jose Mourinho’s time in north London last year.

Instead, Alli was taken off early on the opening day of the season and wasn’t part of Thursday’s Europa League struggles in Plovdiv. With Gareth Bale’s spectacular return to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Alli’s days may be numbered and certainly are from a Fantasy perspective.

He is replaced by Tanguy Ndombele (£6.0m) in one of two changes made by Mourinho from last Sunday, with Toby Alderweireld (£5.5m) making way for Davinson Sanchez (£5.5m) at centre-back.

In what is a horrifically busy schedule for Spurs, it will be interesting to see how safe Son and Harry Kane (£10.5m) are from rotation in the coming weeks, although both start today.

Former Southampton captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£5.0m) makes a swift return to his former club after a £15m summer transfer, with Southampton’s popular FPL defender Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.5m) also facing his old side after making the reverse journey.

The Saints lost 1-0 last weekend and have responded with their own two changes, as Stuart Armstrong (£5.5m) has recovered from a thigh injury picked up on international duty to replace Will Smallbone (£4.5m) in attacking midfield.

Manager Ralph Hasenhuttl gave off negative vibes after their midweek Carabao Cup defeat to Brentford, suggesting it would be a very long and difficult season for a side who finished 2019/20 in brilliant form.

Whilst they would not have expected two defeats and no goals to start their season, the dual-threat of both Che Adams (£6.0m) and Danny Ings (£8.4m) up front should ensure that Southampton won’t be in serious danger and they would love to open their accounts today.

Hasenhuttl’s other change to the starting line-up sees Moussa Djenepo (£5.5m) replace the injured Nathan Redmond (£6.5m).

The winger suffered a light ankle injury against Brentford.

Southampton XI (4-4-2): McCarthy; Walker-Peters, Stephens, Bednarek, Bertrand; Armstrong, Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Djenepo; Ings, Adams.

Tottenham Hotspur XI (4-3-3): Lloris; Doherty, Dier, Sanchez, Davies; Hojbjerg, Winks, Ndombele; Lucas, Son, Kane.

Imagine taking that from the documentary where Mou literally calls Alli "lazy in training". Mou probably one of the managers who most highly rates work rate and training ethics and really hates poor attitude.

Martial was labelled lazy, is he still? Not sure how he motivates players but it seems has never clicked in the last few clubs.

Only thing that went right with my GW was that I got rid of Alli. Too bad I didn't do the obvious switch to J-Rod and instead downgraded to Harrison and decided to take a hit to bring in Martial for Mitrovic.

Mourinho says Alli being left out is just a squad issue and literally says his squad is "too big and Ive never had this and I dont like this". "Too many players in some positions". Basically saying between the lines that Alli is not in his future plans at all and that he wants him gone from the club.

Yep. Read between the lines from his post Everton press conferences. Alli has fallen out with Mou. Made it a pretty easy switch to Hot Rod and I'm not gonna regret it at all.

My personal opinion. Deserved, Alli is a fraud who has been lazy and trash for years and finally we wont have to see him playing for a top side or for England. Should find his level in a farmer league in Europe.

Bad PR management from Mourinho for his own sake in my opinion. With the lack of creativity in the team, if he stays until next season, he will inevitably ask the club to buy a new attacking mid if Alli leaves and this statement will be reminded to him.

What is it about Alli that makes people still rate him after literally years (3 years now) where he has been absolute garbage except for maybe 10 minutes here and there where he shows a flash of quality? Not necessarily aimed at you in particular just see it over and over... Hes a shite player

I don't think he's shite. He's obviously a talented player. He's had problems with injuries for a long time and he does appear to have gone backwards. I would love to have him at my team. And if Spurs sell him and get Lingard they will be a worse team for it.

I don’t disagree he’s been quite bad. My issue is with Mourinho’s statement. The reason he left out Dele is not because the squad is too big and when he requests for more transfers, he’ll clearly contradict himself.

Man, I was all set to ship Zaha and now he's made it impossible. Really hard to shift someone on such good form.

Instead, I'm looking for an Ings replacement.

    Ings (8.5) >

    A) Richarlison (8.5)
    B) DCL (8.0)
    C) Jimenez (9.0)
    D) Jesus (9.5)

    I have no City.

      ***IMPORTANT***

I'm going to say it again and intend to mail FPL also AGAIN...

The whole way price changes IS managed in the game is truly AWFUL imo. Awful.

I have been playing the game a long time and know how to navigate it thankfully.

However, it's clunky, lazy and shows a clear lack of imagination to come up with an alternative that all FPL players like.

Most people I know, casuals or not, find it annoying, irritating and that at times it can affect how we play the game.

It detracts from an otherwise great game and reduces the enjoyment in my opinion.

For example, FPL players on occasion sell or buy players to deal with anticipated changes.

This in itself can cause a run and ends up becoming a self fulfilled prophecy.

I think we as FPL players all appreciate that we should be rewarded in some way for good selections or pay a penalty for bad choices .

That's not the issue. The problem is that the way it's done is arbitrary and ham fisted.

This can be better. Nothing will change if we just shrug our shoulders and accept things. Mail them too if you like.

Come on mods, FFS have contact with FPL towers?! Give our community a voice!!!

The intended way is to not have any information at all on price changes. Its just price change sites that try to predict it. Imo FPL should remove info on player transfers in and out and ownership percentages until the new gw starts and kill the price change sites altogether.

If they just told us officially, which price changes were going to happen at the next deadline, then that would be a start.
I'd personally like prices to be frozen until the last match of the gameweek has completed and then update as normal.
Sure, it reduces some of the benefit of first mover advantage, but would reduce frustrations

People now and then complain about the advice they followed here to bring in a certain player that failed. Here’s my opposite view:
Was all set on bringing in Greenwood for Alli. Waited for news on both and even took the price drop. Alli became a no go and people convinced me James was a better option than young Mason so I went that way. This post is a thank you bite for all you lovely people who helped me! Cheers all!
