Dugout Discussion

Fraser and Ritchie among the subs as unchanged Newcastle take on Brighton

The second of four Premier League matches to take place on Sunday sees Brighton and Hove Albion make the long trip north to face Newcastle United.

Kick-off at St James’ Park is at 14:00 BST.

From a Fantasy perspective, it’s probably fair to say that, in general, there is less riding on this game than in the other three fixtures today.

There is nevertheless still plenty of interest in the likes of Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.5m), Callum Wilson (£6.5m) and Mathew Ryan (£4.5m), all three of whom have double-digit ownerships in Fantasy Premier League.

That trio of players starts this afternoon, with there being only one change to the starting XIs from Gameweek 1 across the two teams combined.

Steve Bruce has unsurprisingly made no alterations to his line-up following the opening-day win over West Ham United.

That means that Ryan Fraser (£6.0m), Miguel Almiron (£6.0m) and Matt Ritchie (£5.0m) have to be content with a place among the substitutes.

Graham Potter’s only change sees Aaron Connolly (£5.5m) come in for Adam Lallana (£6.4m), with the latter having limped out of the defeat to Chelsea last Monday.

Lallana is fit enough for a place on the bench, however.

Ben White (£4.5m) has also recovered from injury and keeps his place in the back three.

There were no goals in either meeting between the two clubs last season.

Indeed, not one of the last six fixtures between Newcastle and Brighton has seen more than two goals scored.

Newcastle United XI: Darlow, Manquillo, Fernandez, Lascelles, Lewis, Hayden, Shelvey, Hendrick, Saint-Maximin, Carroll, Wilson.

Brighton and Hove Albion XI: Ryan, White, Dunk, Webster, Lamptey, Bissouma, Alzate, March, Trossard, Maupay, Connolly.

    Players I want to remove.

    ASM, Davies, McCarthy, Adams, Auba.

Players I want in, 3x Wolves, 1-2x City, DCL. Is that good reason to press WC?

Now stuck with McCarthy, Tierny, Digne, Doherty.

    Got no backup playing GK.

Got two transfers and none ITB.

Yh, Adams has at least gotten a lot of chances. Auba is not worth his 12 mill tag playing so wide with plenty of cheaper options around imo. Tough fixtures as well.

Surely if these two gameweeks have taught us anything it’s to not knee jerk, sit tight and have some patience. We’ve brought our players in for good reasons and long term gains. One bad week should be swept under the carpet - take it on the chin and move on. Drastic action will only end in tears.

Exactly what I was about to post.

The discussion on here today is regretting making knee-jerk transfers and planning what knee-jerk transfers to make in response.

Drops don't matter unless you want to transfer a player out - it's just like a loss on paper until you sell.
I decided I was happy to take the Son drop since he has pedigree and fixtures.
Wouldn't surprise me if a load of people who knee jerked him out are now knee jerking him in.

    3. Nightcrawler

Ugh it depends on the moves really. Getting tired of this say no to knee jerks at all cost

Selling adams for dcl worked a treat for example. Or bamfrod.

Selling ings and son was horrednous for those that did.

Sometimes ir works sometimes it doesn't

Yeah, "don't knee jerk" is the ultimate hindsight.

If you move someone else in and they do well, nothing is said, if the person you moved out does well then you get a "if only you had patience"

        Sold Ings for Martial.

In fairness, that move could still work out long term. I knew the risks though.

I’m referring more to the big hitters and those we build our team around - like Son, Kane, Ings - rather than enablers like Adams.

The problem is that a vicious cycle develops and by patiently waiting you can get prices out of certain moves especially early in the season. Some folks knee jerk and chase points causing price rises and drops, some folks make their transfers based on not wanting to lose value so early.

      1. JabbaWookiee
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

So true. I should honestly ignore the markets. Son going down and Willian going up were key factors in my making that move. Along with hearing community contributors bemoaning Son’s less impactful wider role under Mourinho.

At the start of the season there’s always that fear of the 0.1 loss that will make it hard to transfer without taking a hit, but that’s really just a myth. I reckon I’d be much better off never looking at FPLstatistics.com

My plan this season was to pick nailed players and stay patient. The only transfer I planned was Son to Bruno, pretty harsh to get screwed over that harsh but that's been my luck last few seasons

It’s tough as if you jump to the right player you’re a genius, but the wrong and you’re an idiot.

Rodríguez being good example this week of positive, but any united player bad.

I’d also add that Spurs were awful last week, awful midweek and played off the part by saints up until 47th min.

What followed was pure madness and it hurts having got rid of Son
