Budget FPL assets shine for Leeds and Fulham but Bielsa highlights lack of creativity

Leeds United 4-3 Fulham

  • Goals: Helder Costa (£5.5m) x2, Mateusz Klich (£5.5m), Patrick Bamford (£5.6m) | Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.0m) x2, Bobby Decordova-Reid (£5.5m)
  • Assists: Bamford x2, Klich | Joe Bryan (£5.0m), Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa (£4.5m), Kenny Tete (£4.5m)
  • Bonus: Mitrovic x3, Bamford x2, Costa x2

Patrick Bamford (£5.6m) rewarded his growing Fantasy following with a double-digit haul in Leeds United’s second seven-goal thriller of the week.

The forward’s goal in Gameweek 1’s 4-3 loss to Liverpool prompted nearly 365,000 managers to buy him in for the Fulham game.

Seasoned Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bosses, and many a Leeds fan, would have considered the move optimistic at best as Bamford has plenty of previous for missing his fair share of chances.

But the striker struck again on Saturday, finishing with aplomb when released by a Mateusz Klich (£5.5m) pass early in the second half of the win over Fulham.

His boss, Marcelo Bielsa, was quick to play down the side’s eye-catching start to the season:

This won’t be a constant all year. It is very difficult to maintain the efficiency we have had in these first two games. The characteristics of our game is to create goalscoring opportunities. In these two games we have created very little, but we have scored all our chances.

He might as well have been talking about Bamford, who has now scored from two of the three chances he has been presented with this season.

That has tempted another raft of managers to back the striker. He’s currently in the top three transfers-in for a Gameweek 3 trip to Sheffield United and a Yorkshire derby that should be, to use a technical term, proper tasty.

Whether his fine form is sustainable is highly debatable.

FPL has indulged plenty of fine early starters who failed to deliver consistently over a season – Norwich’s Teemu Pukki is the most recent example of that, while Manchester United striker Anthony Martial (£9.0m) is another who hit the Premier League ground running before being reduced to a stagger within a few weeks.

As we detailed in pre-season here, Bamford has never been the most clinical of strikers, missing 34 (77.3%) of the big chances he had in the Championship last season.

For now, however, it would be churlish not to bask in his point-scoring glory. He also had two assists against Fulham, earning a penalty when he was pushed in the back by Joe Bryan (£5.0m) and then setting up Helder Costa (£5.5m) on the break to make the scoreline 4-1 with barely ten minutes of the second half played.

Add on two bonus and the forward ended with 14 points on the day –  a total he shared with Costa as the midfielder opened the scoring when he picked up a loose ball from a corner and smashed it in off the bar with five minutes on the clock.

Costa also earned two bonus points and has now hauled in both matches for his 1.6% ownership.

But spare a thought for the 4.6% with Klich in their squads. He also scored in Gameweek 1 and was on the score sheet against the Cottagers when he rolled home the penalty Bamford had earned.

Such was the madness of the match, a goal and an assist were not enough to bring in any extra points for the Poland international. In fact, the maximum bonus award didn’t even go to a Leeds player at all.

That honour was reserved for visiting striker Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.0m), who marked his first start of the season with two goals and 12 points.

The Serbia international was a very popular pick heading into the season and the 20%-owned forward was quick to reward his followers when he blasted in a first-half penalty, awarded when Robin Koch (£4.5m) mistimed a slide tackle on Bryan.

He then headed in from a fine Kenny Tete (£4.5m) cross to make it 4-3 with just over 20 minutes left to play.

Fulham’s other goal was a sweet one, with the impressive Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa (£4.5m) playing a beautifully-weighted pass through to Bobby Decordova-Reid (£5.5m), who shot across Leeds keeper Illan Meslier (£4.5m) and into the far corner.

Both Meslier and his Fulham counterpart Alphonse Areola (£4.5m) were, unsurprisingly, busy boys on the day and the pair picked up a save point apiece for their efforts.

Two players who were rather less involved were Leeds playmaker Pablo Hernandez (£6.0m), who suffered a groin strain in the warm-up, and the club’s record signing, Rodrigo (£6.0m), who replaced him in the starting line-up.

The striker was peripheral at best playing as a number ten behind Bamford and he was hooked at half-time, although that was more an indication of his lack of match fitness as Bielsa, who has very high standards in that regard, was quick to point out post-match:

I was under the impression that he lacked a bit of energy to show his qualities. I think that has something to do with the physical effort he used against Hull (in the EFL Cup). That’s why I decided to sub him.

The coach also gave an update on Hernandez:

Pablo had a small knock in the warm-up. We don’t think it’s very serious.

Fulham boss Scott Parker had understandably mixed emotions about an away game in which his team had 55% of the possession and scored three goals, but still lost:

We showed some real quality in possession at times. We showed a real impetus and caused Leeds a lot of problems. On the flip side we gave away easy goals today and left ourselves a mountain to climb.

He also made it clear that he will chop and change his side this season:

The players who did not play today are vital and will play a vital part this year. As I showed last year I will make changes for matches that give us the best chance of winning.

Not that Fulham rotation will be a major concern for most Fantasy managers, with Mitrovic by far and away the most likely to be drafted in for a good schedule from now until late November.

As for Leeds, they currently have the dubious honour of being an even worse defensive unit than Fulham, having conceded seven goals to the Cottagers’ six.

But in Bamford, Costa and Klich, they have three in-form and very nicely priced assets who will surely find their way into many FPL teams over the next few weeks.

The Leeds rush might have to wait, however – after that derby in Sheffield, Bielsa’s men will host Manchester City in Gameweek 4.

Leeds United XI (4-4-2): Meslier; Dallas, Cooper, Koch, Ayling; Phillips, Harrison, Klich, Costa; Bamford (Alioski 70), Rodrigo (Roberts 45).

Fulham XI (4-2-3-1): Areola; Bryan, Hector, Odoi, Tete; Reed (Lemina 70′), Zambo Anguissa; Kamara (Kebano 58′), Onomah (Decordova-Reid 58′), Cavaleiro; Mitrović.

    2) KDB & Podence

    Wildcard variants

    4.5 4
    Digne Saiss ____ 4.5 4
    Salah Sterling ____ ____ 4.5
    _____ Jimmy DCL

If i over simplify it and restrict to the main targets folk are looking at (high scorers from the first 2 weeks + Sterling) then we can fill the blanks as follows
    Defence: James or TAA (+2)
    Mid1: Son (+2) or JRod (+1)
Mid2: JRod (+1) or a budget mid (lets just call him Soucek for now)
Fwd: Werner (+2) or a budget striker lets just call him Wilson for now (+1) or Fodders

You have 4 to spend using the numbering in the brackets - most wildcard questions will be variants of that.
Obviously you can tweak here and there +/-0.5 on certain positions.

    A few interesting observations:
    1) You can have any 2 of TAA, Son & Werner, but then you cant have JRod or Wilson.
    2) You can have 1 of TAA, Son or Werner, JRod and a Wilson type of striker.

Dont know what the right answer is, but i would try to think about team structure because the wk2 WC team isnt going to be the same as the Wk4 or Wk6 WC team.

  8. To wildcard or not to wildcard, that is the question.

I was so so tempted to wildcard today, and very nearly hit the trigger, but I decided that before I would, I’d write down a list of reasons why it might not be worth it to see if I could convince myself that saving might actually be better. It worked, and I’m actually feeling very comfortable not hitting the wildcard button now! Thought I’d share my thoughts, but please note they are somewhat focused on my own team! There are 20!

    1. Joshua Bull (last year’s champion) did an extremely interesting and informative lecture in the lead up to GW1. A particularly insightful result showed that making transfers that focused on removing weak players from your team was preferable to transfers focused on getting in the most in form players from the last few weeks. Admittedly, his analysis wasn’t in the context of wildcards, but I imagine the general result still holds fairly true. I have noticed that my desire to wildcard this week has come mostly from a desire to own players I don’t have, rather than because my own players are really bad.

This brings me to SECTION I - my current team:

    2. I spent hours and hours over the course of weeks building my team, and I believe the decision-making process was sound. Just because the players I own aren’t the ones who have scored the most points so far doesn’t mean they are terrible picks.

    3. Che Adams can be considered very unlucky not to have scored so far this season, being denied by brilliant saves in both GW1 and GW2. He may be dropping in price, but I’ve seen enough to suggest that he can still be an excellent asset over the next few weeks.

    4. My Man Utd assets (Martial, Fernandes, Shaw) performed woefully this week, and I do believe going so hard on them was a mistake. That said, Spurs looked utterly woeful last week and then put five past Southampton today. One game is not enough to judge whether Man Utd have turned into a rubbish team or if they just had an off day and the start of the season came too soon. Martial and Fernandes have shown over the course of last season that they can be excellent picks, so immediately ditching them feels extremely kneejerky. (I am likely to still do Fernandes —> Son this week though!)

    5. James Justin has proven himself to be a superb pick over the first two weeks. If I were to wildcard, I would likely have to ditch him because my team would have to be set up extremely long-term, and Pereira’s return would force a future transfer. By waiting to wildcard, I get to hold on to Justin for a little longer!

    6. The same thing can be said for Tyrick Mitchell. For now he is an excellent option, but I’d want to drop him on wildcard to avoid a future transfer when he loses his place. Waiting allows me to keep him for longer.

    7. McCarthy, TAA, Salah, Rodriguez, Soucek, Rodriguez, Werner are all perfectly competent players that don’t really need replacing, which accounts for my whole team aside from ASM and Davies who can be fixed over the next couple of weeks with a hit or two.

Now lets move on to SECTION II - my wildcard team:

    8. There are in general too many uncertainties! To start with, the transfer window is still open, and there could easily be some major transfers that force us to think differently.

    9. For example, Rhian Brewster is looking likely to get a loan move. If he can become a regular starter at 4.5 for some club then he will be an absolute no brainer in my wildcard team, and would require a completely different structure to one where he’s looking like he won’t get minutes. Waiting allows me to work out whether I should get him in or not.

    10. Getting one of Neto/Podence seems like a brilliant option on wildcard. Unfortunately, the signing of Semedo throws a lot of uncertainty on who if any of them will be nailed. Waiting a bit longer will allow me to see whether either of these become a nailed on option.

    11. Reece James looks like a brilliant option if nailed. We don’t yet know whether that will be the case when both Azpi and Chilwell are fit, and if it turns out he isn’t nailed, then he’s not worth having. Waiting a bit longer would allow me to work out whether I want him.

    12. DCL has looked excellent in the first two games and his someone I would definitely bring in if I was wildcarding. He has both form and fixtures, AND passes both the stats and eye tests. However, 2.5 of his 2.7 xGI came from that WBA fixture, and although Everton’s fixtures look reasonable on paper, I don’t believe any of the upcoming defences will offer up nearly as many chances. I also just don’t believe that DCL can have gone from a mediocre to a world class finisher overnight - it seems most likely to me that he will have improved on last year’s levels, but not to such an extent that his score has suggested in the first two gameweeks. I want to be clear that I think DCL is a superb option, but perhaps not as urgent a transfer as he might seem, particularly when I’m already content with my other three strikers (Werner, Martial, Adams).

    13. Ferguson looks like the most nailed 4.0 option when he gets fit. Unfortunately, that seems a little while away! It would be ideal if I could minimise the length of time over the course of the season that my 4.0 defender wasn’t playing. Holding Mitchell until he gets dropped and then moving for Ferguson on wildcard allows me to do this.

    14. Currently, Martinez looks like he’d be my bet for a set and forget 4.5 keeper on wildcard. Aside from Fulham, Villa’s next six fixtures really don’t look very clean sheet friendly. Waiting would allow me to avoid these fixtures, and potentially even decide that Martinez isn’t the best keeper to get and look elsewhere after gathering more info.

    15. If I was wildcarding, I’d want a midfielder from Man City at the very minimum. At the moment, I don’t know who I would want, nor do I know anything about the potential nailedness of the likes of Foden and Mahrez. Waiting would allow me to make the correct choice between Sterling and De Bruyne after gathering more information, and decide whether any of the other assets are worth buying. Of course, getting on one of Sterling/KDB early has its advantages, but in my situation I think it’s a bit of a luxury, and I think getting the better option late is better than getting the wrong option early. Of course, if one of them looks essential, I can bring them in when appropriate without wildcarding!

    16. I think Pulisic could be a tremendous option this season, and would most likely want him in my squad when he’s fully fit. Waiting to wildcard would save me a future planned transfer to bring him in.

    17. I really like Lamptey. He went off with a knock today. It may be short term but waiting at least allows me to see if there are any lingering problems. (Yeah, I realise this one is a bit of a stretch!)

    18. I really want a Wolves defender, but I can solve this problem with a transfer by selling Davies.

OK, finally lets looks at SECTION III - general advantages of saving the wildcard:

    19. With a lot of people wildcarding this week, holding the wildcard gives me a card up my sleeve later on. The wildcard chip is extremely valuable, and if I can ride out the next few weeks without falling too far behind the crowd (which is definitely achievable) then I’ve got a big advantage later on, particularly if an even rainier day than today comes about.

    20. There have been so many goals in the first two weeks of the season. Two weeks isn’t enough to determine whether this is a trend, or if it is just an anomaly, perhaps due to an unusually short pre-season with players just needing a couple of weeks to settle. The answer to this problem will affect how I’d structure my wildcard team, and how much I’d invest in the defence.

Ok. That’s it. 20 reasons why I’m holding back on the wildcard. Hope it was somewhat useful despite the excessive length! For context, my GW2 team is below:

    McCarthy, Steer
    TAA, Davies, Shaw, Justin, Mitchell
    Salah, Fernandes, Jamez, ASM, Soucek
    Werner, Martial, Adams

Sound reasoning, I dont hate my team so much after doing Auba to Son, maybe I can do ASM to Zaha or JRod for a hit also. Adams to Jimenez is an option also but not sure worth a hit since ASM injury more concern (could always play a 4th defender though). -8 is out of the question.

Decent logic and sound reasoning in your essay for sure mate. I'm doing the opposite though. 5 main reasons:
      1. I want to sort out my GKs for the long haul (have Ramsdale/McCarty which I no longer want).
      2. I need Salah for my sanity after that GW1 showing.
      3. I want rid of double Arsenal and double Soton.
      4. Feels a decent week to catch some price rises.
      5. Wolves next 7 fixtures after City look great and want at least 2 of their assets for that run.

Thank you. Great post and sound reasoning. This season is completly different than others due to following reasons: 1) lack of preseason 2) BGW in first GW 3) extended transfer window. Therefore I feel that need 2 or 3 weeks more to properly asses who I want to have on my wildcard. It is difficult to do when you did not have a chance to see AV SHU or MCI once. Currentlly I don’t who I want as my goalkeeper. Ryan because he git one CS?

Great post. Few things stand out.

      5. & 6. but you are getting rid of them anyway when you aren't wildcarding? How? By Wildcarding later? Or using transfers? If it's the latter then kind of a waste of a few transfers on cheap enabling defenders.

      10. by waiting you will possibly miss Wolves' best fixture run of the season and the Podence damage may already be done.

      15. I doubt City situation is going to be any clearer than the last few years so that one is kind of null and void. KDB & Sterling most nailed. Don't like it as an argument not to WC though. If you're wildcarding this week you really should at least 1 or 2 City players including KDB or Raz.

Honestly, I play my wildcard within the first 4 GW's pretty much every season and generally always make the top 20K, last year 5800 OR. I would say using a WC early may be the optimal way to gain a lead/ground on your ML, as well as the best way to increase your squad budget early, which proves extremely fruitful down the line.

My argument with 5 and 6 is that when I do wildcard, I won't want to have Mitchell or Justin because they will force transfers down the line.

By saving my wildcard, I get to keep these two options for longer.

Can't argue with the rest of your comment, which I follow completely.

        Disagree-
1- you have a fair idea that Everton are gonna do well, Sheffield not so much, Fulham & WBA can't defend
Son has always been a reliable source of points, wolves are great defensively. So many trends & information, good enough for WC imo

      McCarthy Martin
      TAA Mitchell Justin Davies Vinagre
      Salah Auba Alli ASM Bissouma
      Werner Ings Mitro

      WC time?

Similar team to me, I just have Bruno/Adams/Wilson instead...very tempted to WC too as the players either playing bad or have hard fixture next, what’s your thinking right now?

      Hit WC or not?

      McCarthy* (Steer)
      TAA - Davies* - Justin - Taylor - Mitchell
      Auba* - Salah - Hamez - ASM* - Bissouma*
      Werner - Adams* - Martial

      * = Defo want to get rid
Also probably Martial out unless ManU show something good.

Would like to bring KdB, Jimi, Podence, Saiss, goalkeeper, James, maybe DCL or Richalison.

Have to decide now before Adams drop and possible Saiss, James etc rise.

Just do Auba and ASM to KDB and Podence.

Then get Jimi in next week for Martial

I always try and hold WC as long as possible unless it's really going tits up.

Even with a really tricky start, doesnt feel we know enough about teams or transfers to select a great WC team yet.

Most who went last week probably regret it already.

      Draft for my WC:

      Guaita-Ryan
      mitchell - digne - lamprey - VVD - castagne
      Son - Zaha - Rodriguez - KDB - Costa
      Werner - Mitrovic - DCL

      ItB: 0.9

      my doubts:
      1) werner vs WBA or Jimenez for long plan?
      2) GW4 --> Werner out - Jimmy in?
      3) guaita-ryan for rotation or ryan-martinez/McCarthy for rotation?
      4) son or fernandes?
      5) castagne or james?

      any other suggestions?

      thanks!
