Kane and Son expose Saints as Ings cements first-choice penalty-taker status

SOUTHAMPTON 2-5 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

  • Goals: Danny Ings (£8.4m) x2; Son Heung-min (£8.9m) x4, Harry Kane (£10.5m)
  • Assists: Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.5m), Moussa Djenepo (£5.5m) | Kane x4, Erik Lamela (£5.9m)
  • Bonus: Kane x3, Son x2, Ings x1

Son Heung-min (£8.9m) responded to his price drop by scoring four goals in a remarkable display against Southampton’s high defensive line, all assisted by Harry Kane (£10.5m), as Spurs came from behind to beat the Saints 5-2.

Jose Mourinho’s side can’t stop making headlines right now. Their All or Nothing series is sparking constant discussion, whilst they announced the spectacular return of Gareth Bale alongside Sergio Reguilon over the weekend.

Yet the current stars concluded an uncomfortable week of matches by operating a second-half demolition job, rounded off by a goal from Kane. He injured his hamstring in last season’s equivalent meeting but, this time, became the first man in Premier League history to assist the same goalscorer four times in one match – each one looking eerily similar.

In first-half stoppage-time, some brilliant midfield work by Tanguy Ndombele (£6.0m) ended up at Kane’s feet and his first-time pass set Son clear through. The South Korean international blasted his right-footed finish inside Alex McCarthy’s (£4.5m) far post.

“I know that everyone will say Sonny is man of the match because it’s an incredible achievement to score four goals in the Premier League, but I am a team coach, I am all about my team and what Harry did for us is an example of the guy who is not going to have the highlights on him, but is fundamental for the team.” – Jose Mourinho

Early in the second half, Son’s next two goals were almost identical. Both were Kane through balls from deep, both put Son one-on-one with the goalkeeper and both were clinical finishes that exploited a poorly applied high defensive line. Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl will be raging.

They combined a fourth time after 73 minutes, with Kane fetching the ball out wide and curving a wonderful cross for Son to chest then prod home with his left foot. It was a truly magnificent display by Son, who is well-positioned to score over ten times for a fifth consecutive season. Kane finally got his goal nine minutes later, tapping in after substitute Erik Lamela’s (£5.9m) shot hit the post.

“We had a strong first half with some very good scenes, with a lot of chances from our side. We were compact and disciplined but had one silly mistake before half time to bring them back to 1-1. Our heads went a little bit down, their heads a little bit up.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl

However, it doesn’t explain a first half which saw three disallowed goals and some Southampton domination. In fact, Son’s opening goal was the only first half shot mustered by Spurs and the only touch in their opponent’s box.

Danny Ings (£8.4m) had a strike ruled out after Hugo Lloris (£5.5m) surged out of his box to head the ball against Ings’ arm. The striker put the ball into the net but it was correctly disallowed.

It was a good day for Ings’ FPL managers, though. He scored twice himself to punish the 240,000 sellers who had lost faith after an opening-day blank at Crystal Palace. His 22 goals of last season made him an almost must-have asset but he became a victim of the devastating number of price changes going on right now.

Ings put Southampton ahead in the 32nd minute, after being put through by a long Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.5m) ball. Fairly wide, a good first touch was followed by a crisp finish into Lloris’ bottom corner. He scored in three of the four matches against Spurs last season, adding a second here via a late penalty given for Matt Doherty’s (£6.0m) handball.

It was interesting that Ings still took the spot-kick, despite set-piece specialist James Ward-Prowse (£6.0m) being on the pitch. With upcoming games against Burnley (a) and West Brom (h), it’s certainly worth considering keeping hold of the reliable Ings for the foreseeable future.

His strike partner Che Adams (£6.0m) had some online love heading into Gameweek 1. Priced much cheaper than Ings, he scored four times in the nine Project Restart matches and is seemingly ahead of Shane Long (£5.5m) in the pecking order. He had the chances here but couldn’t quite get on the scoresheet.

After ten minutes, a free-kick landed at Adams’ feet by the penalty spot but his powerful shot was saved well by Lloris. He may have scored shortly after, if it wasn’t for a great Ben Davies (£5.0m) block. Later given a yellow card, Adams began the second half with an on-target effort to finish a free-flowing attack. It was comfortable for Lloris.

On the one hand, it may encourage managers that Adams has started both league games and got himself into the right positions from which to cause trouble. But seeing Ings bag a brace will hurt, especially when fellow cheap striker Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.0m) registered 12 points on Saturday.

Despite Southampton ranking third amongst the nine Project Restart games – five wins and three draws – Hasenhuttl has given off some negative vibes in press conferences recently. He believes that “with the team we have, it will be very difficult to win games”, even though they followed October’s humiliating 9-0 defeat to Leicester by being the league’s seventh-best team during the subsequent 28 matches.

“When you have no pressure on the ball you cannot play such a high line. We still did it, and this is not possible. We must come back, close the gaps and defend our own box with everything we have.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl

Perhaps he is a visionary, judging by how badly they defended this time. It was far too easy for Son to stroll through and for Kane to be a creative maestro. Walker-Peters assisted against his former side but owners of goalkeeper McCarthy may start to worry that his place is under threat.

Elsewhere, Stuart Armstrong (£5.5m) made a quiet return to midfield after picking up a thigh injury on Scotland duty, whilst Moussa Djenepo (£5.5m) looked bright and hit the post.

For Spurs, Doherty assisted the first disallowed goal, nodding Son’s cross into a Kane volley that was ruled out for an earlier offside. It was encouraging to see him so far forward but the Irishman ended up without any attacking returns, before being booked and conceding a late penalty with his handball.

It will be fascinating to see what is next for Tottenham. The big team news involved Dele Alli (£7.9m) being completely left out, following last week’s half-time withdrawal against Everton. His appeal as an FPL asset will be extinguished once Bale has built up match fitness. With Reguilon’s addition, they now possess attacking full-backs on both flanks and perhaps this will lead to a formation change.

Successfully negotiating a brutal fixture list is their first priority. They play 48 hours later against Leyton Orient in the Carabao Cup, then 48 hours after that in North Macedonia against Shkendija in the Europa League. Beat those sides and it’s the same schedule next week, starting with their home game against Newcastle. It is a horrific diary and Mourinho’s squad management could throw up some shocks for the Fantasy managers who have invested in the Lilywhites.

Southampton XI (4-4-2): McCarthy; Walker-Peters, Stephens, Bednarek, Bertrand; Armstrong (Tella 68’), Romeu (Smallbone 55’), Ward-Prowse, Djenepo; Ings, Adams (Long 80’)

Tottenham Hotspur XI (4-3-3): Lloris; Doherty, Dier, Sanchez, Davies; Hojbjerg, Winks, Ndombele (Lo Celso 46’); Lucas (Lamela 61’), Son, Kane (Bergwijn 84’)

hard to say i know without city kicking a ball yet but is it crazy to go without city mid for the next month or so?
eg: I can go Auba/Brewster to Son/Jimenez rather than Auba to Sterling or Kdb
then reassess wildcard options around GW9/10

    McCarthy Steer
    Robbo Saiss Egan Taylor Ferguson
    Salah Auba Rodriguez ASM Soucek
    Werner Martial Brewster

Basically you're asking if Son+Jimi outscores KDB/Sterling+Brewster over the next 4 GW's. Since Brewster will get 0 points it's then a discussion around KDB (or Sterling) vs Son + Jimi. Seems obvious to me...

pretty much unless Brewster finds a new home
i don't want to be chasing points but fixtures are there and i had a shocker this week (40 points v 80 last week)

I think Son+Jimi are great points options over the next few. Benefit of Son is that if/when one of the Chelsea mids start delivering then it should be an easy switch. You'll also have options to move to one of the City mids like Mahrez or Foden if it looks like they're also getting game time.

Their fixtures actually come good from 10 onwards so it's up to you. Right now everyone can score goals so it doesn't matter who you own. It's fine to me. I owned no pool and city mf and currently at 70k+ OR

I know Son won't be scoring braces every week but playing the fixtures I feel it's a good way to get in Jimenez and go 3-4-3 for a while. Leaning towards Son+Jimmy

Jimmy is solid yes he has fulham and leeds coming up. Son is always a threat unless you're sure spurs will score 0 goal in every game.

A Aubameyang to KDB/Sterling and ASM to Podence/5.5
B Aubameyang to Son and ASM to Zaha/Barnes
C Keep Aubameyang and do ASM to Podence 5.5 and Dier/Egan to Saiss

Any other suggestions welcome. 0.4 m in bank

You should have seen 2 weeks back here when ppl were thrashing those who picked zaha, son, kane, barnes, vardy saying they are overpriced or useless.

Well there is a consensus here but the question is how do you enjoy the game. When i see TAA's ridiculously high ownership it only makes me avoid him, whats the point hoping for LIV to not concede and 3000000 people be happy. Son until yesterday's halftime was useless and suddenly there is not a single post with a WC without him in it. Zaha suddenly became a must. And we know he may blank for 12 straight GWs from now on. Vardy is a differential whereas a striker with his stats and penalties should be owned by most people. But there are more famous teams (MUN - people captained Martial or Fernandez vs CPL like CPL have ever conceded many goals vs a strong opponent, but if it worked). I agree that some players are overpriced though, but also there are players who are overowned and would never consider having them until their ownership gave me a reason to.

I have all 5 of those and the only one that disappoints me is Auba lol. I picked them as I believe they will get me points for the first 5 weeks until I WC. After week 5 I'm removing leicester players for sure and maybe also kane or keep spurs until week 8. It's also getting harder to predict leicester scorers they are becoming like man city.

I really feel a trick now is to find teams where highest percentage of goals are scored between only 1 or 2 players. This makes teams like spurs good assets as it's easy to predict who gets the goals since it's mostly just those 2. This also makes auba less appealing to own as arsenal now has more players capable of scoring making his percentage of goals lower. It was close to 50% last season so unless arsenal scores more goals than last season, I don't see auba hitting 20 this season.

Well its too early to say anything, but they way Arsenal play i cant see them scoring too many goals, although Auba is always capable of having a crazy week. All of the heavyhitters will have their good GWs so its all about predicting who will do it now. Its nice you have a plan but i can tell you for sure that this plan will change until GW 5 or 8 that you mention

I'm gonna WC no matter what in GW6 since I no longer want the leicester players. I didn't panic when I missed the salah train in week 1 so I most likely won't do a panic WC before that. I have jesus and hames now along with those 5. With my analysis, I think ings and jimmy are top assets too since they score a high percentage of their teams' goals. Auba might score big one week then blank a few more. Right now he's just a willian with penalties.

Yes and without the set pieces. I like the idea of getting the best player of each team but doubling on a team could also work, cant imagine how people with both Kane and Son would celebrate yesterday, felt lucky to just have one of them

Doubling works actually if you find another team with 2 main scorers like spurs. I was initially on the zaha+ayew since they add up to half of palace's goals excluding assists. I only took out ayew cos wilson got signed by Newcastle which newcastle ended up being trash. Getting the players with high percentage of goals is good cos on bad days if their team manages to sneak a goal or two in, there's a good chance they will score. While on a good deal when they are thrashing opponents, they would easily get a brace or more.

I agree, i dont like the idea, that people get a player for a team (Havertz) just to have a Chelsea cover. Either get Werner or nothing for me. As for the double, Liv double Mane + Salah gives guaranteed points, i think almost all their goals. But takes 1/4 of the budget for only two players, which means you have 13 players for the other 3/4. If you get TAA there, you are done, have to get budget players everywhere. Small teams dont guarantee that you ll get goals every week though, first you need the team to score, then you check if your player is in the points.

Not at all, i just wanted to try sth different than most people and this fixture seems a good one to invest. If it doesnt work, rest of the players did really good so i can afford even taking a few hits over the next weeks to change that.

      No need to wild card.

      - Tough it out with McCarthy (for now).
      - Bissouma great value as playing bench fodder. Sure, he's suspended, but not worth changing 5th Mid - and for who?
      - Defence is fine
      - If Brewster goes out on loan he's a nice like-for-like swap with Davis.

Don't know how much you have itb, but I would just fix ASM, and don't be scared to use a mini wild card (-8) f you must do more.

agree completely with this. so many people love wasting a wildcard. people are so reactive. loving the half mil who got rid of son last week. he dropped 0.1 in my team and 24 points later hes back up to 9 mil lol. now everyone is getting rid of bruno. good luck to them haha

TBH, I'm overjoyed so many are getting rid of TAA. A 7.5m player who gets points 3 ways playing in a top-3 team and now has 2 full seasons with 185+ points (Son's best season ever is 178 points...)

not quite as simple as that.
the 4.5-5m defenders outscore their 6-7m counterparts in midfield as well.

value has always been defence at all price points, not just the high end.

After one of the worst GWs time for reaction!

    Team is:

    McCarthy - Button
    TAA - Digne - Tierney - C.Taylor - Mitchell
    Salah - Auba - JWP - Soucek - Bissouma
    Werner - Martial - Mitro

I need to fix MID-line and defence. Front-line deserves a chance as all 3 have nice fixtures.
    Nevertheless, would you:

    A) WC?
    B) take a -4 hit (out 2 of: Tierney, Auba, JWP, Soucek)
    C) take a -8 hit (out 3 of: Tierney, Auba, JWP, Soucek)
    ..?

Wildcarded ahead of GW2, I got rid of Kane but I'm 20 points up with Martinez to play later. As you can see, decided to fill my team with penalty takers and had instant success in the Leeds-Fulham game.

Wildcard success or too early to tell?

    Trent Justin Saiss Shaw Digne
Salah Auba (to become KDB/Son) Bruno Podence Klich

Yep. Not worth it considering their price. My team is:

          Guaita.
          Digne. Saiss. James.
          KDB. Raz. Son. Zaha. Barnes.
          Jimi. DCL.

          4.0. Justin. 4.5. Mitchell.

Guaita is set and forget until the next WC (amazing value).
Digne is a beast. His stats are out of control and he's on more corners and freekicks than Hamez (he's TAA levels of threat)
James is on corners and those fixtures..
Zaha/Son/Barnes are the focal points of their respective teams. Goals scoring mids playing up front basically.
Double City mid is getting ahead of the curve for those inevitable City hauls.

Watching City tonight, might get Jesus instead of Raz and upgrade a bit.

I had Rich for my WC last week but want to transfer him out for Jimi. Playing too wide, classified as a forward and most expensive out of DCL, James and him. Definitely do not double-up on Everton and I would encourage you to think about Jimi/DCL at least.

How's this for a wildcard draft?

    Guaita
    Robertson / Saiss / James
    Salah / Sterling / Son / Barnes / Podence
    Jimenez / Calvert-Lewin

    Steer // Brewster / Justin / Mitchell

    - West Ham's right side very weak. Left wingers in Podence (GW3), Barnes (GW4), Son (GW5), Sterling (GW7), Salah (GW8) !
    - 352 over 343, as Brewster -could- be better than 4.5 MIDs. Could swap for a 6-something FWD.
    - Justin currently there are riser, but good fixtures same as Robbo/Saiss/James. Could be Lamptey instead?
    - Guaita & Robbo currently, but it could be 4.5m (e.g. Martinez) & TAA. Opinions?
    - 4.0 is Steer. Will be him or Nyland (whichever 2nd choice), or Forster maybe.
    - No Chelsea FWDs vs. West Brom is potential issue; could alternatively be:

    Martinez
    Robertson / Saiss / Lamptey
    Salah / Sterling / Son / Havertz / Podence
    Ings / Calvert-Lewin

    Steer // Brewster / Justin / Mitchell

    Thoughts? 🙂
