Kane and Son expose Saints as Ings cements first-choice penalty-taker status

SOUTHAMPTON 2-5 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

  • Goals: Danny Ings (£8.4m) x2; Son Heung-min (£8.9m) x4, Harry Kane (£10.5m)
  • Assists: Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.5m), Moussa Djenepo (£5.5m) | Kane x4, Erik Lamela (£5.9m)
  • Bonus: Kane x3, Son x2, Ings x1

Son Heung-min (£8.9m) responded to his price drop by scoring four goals in a remarkable display against Southampton’s high defensive line, all assisted by Harry Kane (£10.5m), as Spurs came from behind to beat the Saints 5-2.

Jose Mourinho’s side can’t stop making headlines right now. Their All or Nothing series is sparking constant discussion, whilst they announced the spectacular return of Gareth Bale alongside Sergio Reguilon over the weekend.

Yet the current stars concluded an uncomfortable week of matches by operating a second-half demolition job, rounded off by a goal from Kane. He injured his hamstring in last season’s equivalent meeting but, this time, became the first man in Premier League history to assist the same goalscorer four times in one match – each one looking eerily similar.

In first-half stoppage-time, some brilliant midfield work by Tanguy Ndombele (£6.0m) ended up at Kane’s feet and his first-time pass set Son clear through. The South Korean international blasted his right-footed finish inside Alex McCarthy’s (£4.5m) far post.

“I know that everyone will say Sonny is man of the match because it’s an incredible achievement to score four goals in the Premier League, but I am a team coach, I am all about my team and what Harry did for us is an example of the guy who is not going to have the highlights on him, but is fundamental for the team.” – Jose Mourinho

Early in the second half, Son’s next two goals were almost identical. Both were Kane through balls from deep, both put Son one-on-one with the goalkeeper and both were clinical finishes that exploited a poorly applied high defensive line. Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl will be raging.

They combined a fourth time after 73 minutes, with Kane fetching the ball out wide and curving a wonderful cross for Son to chest then prod home with his left foot. It was a truly magnificent display by Son, who is well-positioned to score over ten times for a fifth consecutive season. Kane finally got his goal nine minutes later, tapping in after substitute Erik Lamela’s (£5.9m) shot hit the post.

“We had a strong first half with some very good scenes, with a lot of chances from our side. We were compact and disciplined but had one silly mistake before half time to bring them back to 1-1. Our heads went a little bit down, their heads a little bit up.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl

However, it doesn’t explain a first half which saw three disallowed goals and some Southampton domination. In fact, Son’s opening goal was the only first half shot mustered by Spurs and the only touch in their opponent’s box.

Danny Ings (£8.4m) had a strike ruled out after Hugo Lloris (£5.5m) surged out of his box to head the ball against Ings’ arm. The striker put the ball into the net but it was correctly disallowed.

It was a good day for Ings’ FPL managers, though. He scored twice himself to punish the 240,000 sellers who had lost faith after an opening-day blank at Crystal Palace. His 22 goals of last season made him an almost must-have asset but he became a victim of the devastating number of price changes going on right now.

Ings put Southampton ahead in the 32nd minute, after being put through by a long Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.5m) ball. Fairly wide, a good first touch was followed by a crisp finish into Lloris’ bottom corner. He scored in three of the four matches against Spurs last season, adding a second here via a late penalty given for Matt Doherty’s (£6.0m) handball.

It was interesting that Ings still took the spot-kick, despite set-piece specialist James Ward-Prowse (£6.0m) being on the pitch. With upcoming games against Burnley (a) and West Brom (h), it’s certainly worth considering keeping hold of the reliable Ings for the foreseeable future.

His strike partner Che Adams (£6.0m) had some online love heading into Gameweek 1. Priced much cheaper than Ings, he scored four times in the nine Project Restart matches and is seemingly ahead of Shane Long (£5.5m) in the pecking order. He had the chances here but couldn’t quite get on the scoresheet.

After ten minutes, a free-kick landed at Adams’ feet by the penalty spot but his powerful shot was saved well by Lloris. He may have scored shortly after, if it wasn’t for a great Ben Davies (£5.0m) block. Later given a yellow card, Adams began the second half with an on-target effort to finish a free-flowing attack. It was comfortable for Lloris.

On the one hand, it may encourage managers that Adams has started both league games and got himself into the right positions from which to cause trouble. But seeing Ings bag a brace will hurt, especially when fellow cheap striker Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.0m) registered 12 points on Saturday.

Despite Southampton ranking third amongst the nine Project Restart games – five wins and three draws – Hasenhuttl has given off some negative vibes in press conferences recently. He believes that “with the team we have, it will be very difficult to win games”, even though they followed October’s humiliating 9-0 defeat to Leicester by being the league’s seventh-best team during the subsequent 28 matches.

“When you have no pressure on the ball you cannot play such a high line. We still did it, and this is not possible. We must come back, close the gaps and defend our own box with everything we have.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl

Perhaps he is a visionary, judging by how badly they defended this time. It was far too easy for Son to stroll through and for Kane to be a creative maestro. Walker-Peters assisted against his former side but owners of goalkeeper McCarthy may start to worry that his place is under threat.

Elsewhere, Stuart Armstrong (£5.5m) made a quiet return to midfield after picking up a thigh injury on Scotland duty, whilst Moussa Djenepo (£5.5m) looked bright and hit the post.

For Spurs, Doherty assisted the first disallowed goal, nodding Son’s cross into a Kane volley that was ruled out for an earlier offside. It was encouraging to see him so far forward but the Irishman ended up without any attacking returns, before being booked and conceding a late penalty with his handball.

It will be fascinating to see what is next for Tottenham. The big team news involved Dele Alli (£7.9m) being completely left out, following last week’s half-time withdrawal against Everton. His appeal as an FPL asset will be extinguished once Bale has built up match fitness. With Reguilon’s addition, they now possess attacking full-backs on both flanks and perhaps this will lead to a formation change.

Successfully negotiating a brutal fixture list is their first priority. They play 48 hours later against Leyton Orient in the Carabao Cup, then 48 hours after that in North Macedonia against Shkendija in the Europa League. Beat those sides and it’s the same schedule next week, starting with their home game against Newcastle. It is a horrific diary and Mourinho’s squad management could throw up some shocks for the Fantasy managers who have invested in the Lilywhites.

Southampton XI (4-4-2): McCarthy; Walker-Peters, Stephens, Bednarek, Bertrand; Armstrong (Tella 68’), Romeu (Smallbone 55’), Ward-Prowse, Djenepo; Ings, Adams (Long 80’)

Tottenham Hotspur XI (4-3-3): Lloris; Doherty, Dier, Sanchez, Davies; Hojbjerg, Winks, Ndombele (Lo Celso 46’); Lucas (Lamela 61’), Son, Kane (Bergwijn 84’)

How's this for a wildcard draft?

    Guaita
    Robertson / Saiss / James
    Salah / Sterling / Son / Barnes / Podence
    Jimenez / Calvert-Lewin

    Steer // Brewster / Justin / Mitchell

    - West Ham's right side very weak. Left wingers in Podence (GW3), Barnes (GW4), Son (GW5), Sterling (GW7), Salah (GW8) !
    - 352 over 343, as Brewster -could- be better than 4.5 MIDs. Could swap for a 6-something FWD.
    - Justin currently there are riser, but good fixtures same as Robbo/Saiss/James. Could be Lamptey instead?
    - Guaita & Robbo currently, but it could be 4.5m (e.g. Martinez) & TAA. Opinions?
    - 4.0 is Steer. Will be him or Nyland (whichever 2nd choice), or Forster, maybe.
    - No Chelsea FWDs vs. West Brom is potential issue; could alternatively be:

    Martinez
    Robertson / Saiss / Lamptey
    Salah / Sterling / Son / Havertz / Podence
    Ings / Calvert-Lewin

    Steer // Brewster / Justin / Mitchell

    Thoughts?

      Don't like double Wolves attack.

They scored just 51 goals last season. You have to pick between Podence and Jimenez imo.

I think KDB should be first City to recruit and Werner is a must since KDB is also on pens and Werner is Chelsea's goal machine so he'll start racking up goals soon, starting with WBA

Podence is still a question whether he's a starter or not but if he is, I like him too

Guaita pick is nice, Palace unexpectedly solid and I consider him or Leno on my next WC

Justin Mitchell is a no go for WC as they'll likely be rotated soon

My FPL team is in shambles and I'm on WC, but on FanTeam my team is doing quite alright.

    Lloris
    TAA Zouma Boly
    Salah Fernandes Rodriguez Zaha Soucek
    Werner Ings
    (Meslier Mina White 4.0 fwd)

Anything worth a transfer here? Looks like a hold right? Fernandes > Sterling? I did the infamous Son > Fernandes (c) move last week. Disaster.

Yep i'm the same. fpl shambles, fan team doing decent

I wouldnt do Fernandes > Sterling this week, Bruno better away and I think Brighton is a prime game for him. If he plays deeper coz of VDB again this week then sell him next for Sterling vs Leeds

main reasons why people use their wc are because Spurs took advantage of Soton's high line and Everton scored loads vs a 10 man relegation side?
cover from them is justified, but wc them in for these tough next few fixtures, mainly for eve?
I feel like majority of teams can be sorted with about 1-2 hits over a few gws, maybe just me tho...

While it's tempting to wc early to fix certain 'issues', catch price rises or if you only have exactly the right funds for intended moves, there are plenty advantages to saving it.

    1. While the PL has said teams must play on even if players test positive, 2nd Lockdown or multiple positive tests could lead to games being postponed and possible DGWs before the New Year.

    2. Positive tests could leave your squad badly hit, just at a time when certain teams have key fixtures, e.g. Liv/MAN C playing West Brom.

    3. Transfer window not closed yet.

    4. Several key players yet to return from injury. When they do it will have a triple impact: (a) you want them; (b) their prices are already dropping e.g. Ziyech, Pulisic, Pereira, Kun; (c) they will displace players currently getting game time.

      1. They'll give us a wildcard like they did before.
      2. We still have transfers to use. It's not like we can't transfer those guys out.
      3. Hits.
      4. This is the only real concern. But with good price point placeholders, it should be able to be mitigated.

It's a judgement call, no one-size fits all solution. People MAY test positive, there MAY be DGWs, teams MAY make new signings, we don't know. What I do know is I'm sitting on 84 points from 2 weeks with plummetting TV and players that are injured and out of form. Sure, that's partially my fault for a bad GW1 selection. But what can you do, go back in time? Wildcards are always going to be beneficial if you save them but they can also be beneficial if you use it early, it's your own call.

not sure why 3 is an issue.(it's always mentioned)...are there really anyone thats going to upset the FPL cart? 4 i also dont get....hopefully the players you get now does well and increase in price...then you buy the likes of Puli/Ziyech(that have hopefully dropped more)...win-win?

Is Zaha a trap? He historically does well v attacking "good" teams but struggles against dross. Last season he played almost every minute of every game (approx. 3200 minutes) and got 4G 6A. That's poor. Do we really think he's suddenly turned a corner because one good performance v a terrible United side? Bear in mind he's NOT on pens (Mili is) and Brewster might force him back to the wing.

Respectfully disagree Camzy, there are a couple of other options at the 4.5 mark but Southy's high-line is currently so vulnerable that I don't see a single team that will struggle to penetrate that. Really like McCarthy as a keeper but he can't bail out 2/3 1v1's every game.

Their defence was good duding restart. They also responded well after the 9-goal drubbing by Leicester last season. Pre-season they were decent.

If Hassy stick with that suicidal high line then they will be punished by counter-attacking teams with pace. Burnley? (Wood); WBA? (all of them).

Have you seen the games? Richarlison has been so much more dangerous than DCL. He is much more on the ball and has had more chances. I'm confident he will outscore DCL this season.

I have seen all the games and Rich is playing wide left wing but still classed as a forward. Nothing to do with his ability, which I am a big fan of. It makes no sense to have Rich at nearly 1.0 more than someone who is playing closer to goal and doesn't have to work as hard for his chances. Rich will score this year but he will definitely not out-score DCL. Hamez loves a shot as well and I can also see that affecting his total.

If people say TAA is great value at 7.5m then the same argument holds water for Rich at 8.0m. Sure he was better value as a Mid, but he still scored his points from wide and central positions, and switches to the centre forward position when DCL is subbed-off.

I'm not sure how the TAA comparison is relevant? TAA hasn't changed positions. He also scored 210 points last season. Richarlison scored 165.

Rich getting 15/20 minutes at the end of the game after running for 70 doesn't exactly fill me with joy. It's about Rich only getting the same amount of points as DCL for goals (likely less) and also probably not significantly more than Hamez, who gets 1 more point per goal and is essentially playing in a position that is just as threatening.

Hamez stats are inferior due to his positioning. Zero runs made in the last game. How many will he score from outside of the box? He will enhance DCL and Rich I think. DCL & Rich double for me.

Rich, JRod & DCL are all good value picks.
Which one you go with depends on the competition elsewhere for the slots.

My thinking is the 3rd/4th mid slots are the most competitive and so its hard for JRod to get in above the options i have.
Rich is really competing with Jiminez and Ings, which again is tough for him.
DCL is competing with the 6-6.5s and he is much better than them for just 0.5 more.

At some point the differential between Rich & DCL will narrow enough that Rich is plainly the better option. If you look at their positioning, they basically are playing these 2 up top.

This team is good. You need to work on your defence and get a better 4th mid, but you can fix that in 2-3 GWs. The worst thing you can do is taking hits now and than WC next GW. That's waste.

Play Pickford away to Palace or Meslier away to Sheffield next gw? (On FanTeam)

Basically who would you back more for a clean sheet this gw, Everton or Leeds?

Nyland is about third in the pecking order.

Mitchell won't start when Ferguson comes back so it's a transfer waiting to happen.

Zaha has been good but many have been burnt by him in the past.

Do you mean PVA? Mitchell doesn't play on Ferguson's side. We are also not certain yet that Ferguson displaces Ward or that Mitchell is dropped off the back of superb form.

Re. the above, I don't like the lack of a Liverpool defender. Clearly more goals are being scored at the moment but Liverpool score attacking points and their points price value is pretty much unparalleled.

Dont see him getting game time at this point, Tomori came on instead of him ysterday right? Is he injured or just out of favour?

Zouma's decent and Christensen only performs poorly and makes mistakes against the biggest sides. Let's not forget how many mistakes Rudiger has made as well. Both Zouma and Christensen are young for CBs and I think they have this season to show something and improve.

Must be other choices? If you are willing to punt I would go VDB. Looks a different class to most of the other MU front 5-6 and is the cheapest.

Thiago not a great fantasy football asset. I've always ignored him in the Champions League games and he never accrued many points for Bayern.

    Martinez (Steer)
    Digne Saiss James (Lampy, Mitchell)
    Salah Sterling Son Soucek (Bissouma)
    Werner Jimmy DCL

the doubts in this squad have nice price points.

    - James can bail out to any wolves defender for a double up
    - Son can go to Pulisic if he bombs
    - Werner holds a slot for Jesus, Martial, Ings, or its just 2 transfers to do a switcharoo to Pulisic and play 352 if that turns out to be the right option
    - Soucek cant really be beaten for value (probably 4.9 soon!) that im not going to get involved in the 5.5 lottery, same with Lamptey @4.5. Not massively into playing them each week but both nailed and as a rotation pair I've seen worse than this: WOL lei cry WBA tot FUL shu AVL SOU lee CRY SHU BHA sou

      Jesus. Then Werner.

For 9 million minus - Jiminez. Would not have been surprised if he had been priced the same from the start - he's excellent value.

I like picking players based on that as well. Also Man City have had no pre-season and are starting the league a week behind everyone else, whereas I think a player like Werner has had enough game-time to get up to speed with the Prem now to counter-act Jesus's experience.

Probably Jimi because there is usually a disadvantage to playing fewer games and Man City have had no friendlies. Jesus is a massive differential that could pay off with Pep's unpredictability though.

Head to head - Jesus, for haul potential. Jimi is consistent but rarely hauls.

Depends if you an use the extra 1m effectively.

    Salah - KDB - Son - JamRod - Anguilla
    Werner - DCL - Jimi

If Covid affects EPL we will likely get a free WC like before. So no need to keep a WC incase Covid strikes again. The owners want as many managers playing as possible.

    Saiss, Justin, VVD (Mitchell, 4.0)
    KDB, Hamez, Zaha, Barnes (Reed)
    Jiminez, kane, Werner
    0.4 in bank
Would love another nailed on defender instead of the 4.0 but not sure who to downgrade?
