Injury updates on Lamptey and Saint-Maximin after Albion’s FPL assets impress

Newcastle United 0-3 Brighton and Hove Albion

  • Goals: Neal Maupay (£6.5m) x2, Aaron Connolly (£5.5m)
  • Assists: Tariq Lamptey (£4.5m), Leandro Trossard (£6.0m), Maupay
  • Bonus: Maupay x3, Connolly x2, Lewis Dunk (£5.0m) x1

Brighton put a sorry Newcastle to the sword with a performance full of fluency, cohesion and Tariq Lamptey (£4.5m).

Seagulls striker Neal Maupay (£6.5m) got all the points, but it was the young wing-back who drew all the praise with an eye-catching display full of pace and attacking intent.

He set up the Seagulls’ first goal, a Maupay penalty, when he was fouled by Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.5m) and had a hand in the second, releasing Leandro Trossard (£6.0m) down the flank, the Belgian then crossing for the French forward to apply a deft finish.

All of that happened in the first seven minutes, although Maupay’s day wasn’t done as he provided the assist for Brighton’s third goal, late in the game, sweetly scored by his strike partner Aaron Connolly (£5.5m) following a superb team move.

With maximum bonus awarded as well, the frontman ended up with a 16-point haul for his modest 1.7% ownership – a figure that had actually shrunk from its Gameweek 1 levels thanks to the 9,748, presumably very bitter, Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers who had sold him.

But even then, all the talk was of Lamptey.

Of the Brighton players, only Trossard (20) had more touches in the final third than the defender. He also matched the front pair for penalty area touches (three), forced a save from Karl Darlow (£5.0m) and still had time to lead the way for interceptions, with four.

But such are the vagaries of FPL rules, Lamptey ended the match with just four points because he packed all of that into 57 minutes of action before going off with a knock, thus missing out on clean sheet and, almost certainly, bonus points as well.

Potter was keen to resist the temptation to praise Lamptey more than the team as a whole post-match:

It was a really good team performance, it’s not really fair or right to single anyone out.

But in the end, he just couldn’t help himself:

He’s got such pace, he threatens the backline of the defence so well and then he does his own defensive work as well, he’s amazing. I have spoken about his personality a lot, he just wants to improve and wants to learn, he’s so refreshing to work with.

Fantasy managers have certainly taken notice of Lamptey – he’s the only Brighton player in the top 20 for Gameweek 3 transfers in, despite that knock and the fact the Seagulls will be playing host to Manchester United.

That match-up starts a generally tough run of fixtures over the next ten Gameweeks for Potter’s side, with Everton, Spurs, Liverpool, Leicester and a derby with Crystal Palace all to come before Christmas, and a run of four games in under a fortnight, turns up to muddy the waters even further.

It remains to be seen whether Brighton can find a consistency that eluded them for large swathes of last season, but they were utterly dominant at St James’ Park on Sunday.

Trossard produced attacking returns for the second straight week and was unlucky not to score when his shot hit the post, Connolly was also denied by the woodwork and Darlow was kept busy throughout.

The same could not be said of his opposite number, and Brighton’s most owned player in FPL, the 18%-owned Mat Ryan.

Newcastle didn’t manage a single shot on target all match, with the 287,000+ new owners of striker Callum Wilson (£6.5m and 13.7%) missing their one big chance when he headed Miguel Almiron‘s (£6.0m) cross over from close range.

Magpies boss Steve Bruce didn’t spare the horses with his assessment of the team:

We gave ourselves a mountain to climb. We’ve gifted them the first two goals. When you start like that it’ll be a difficult afternoon. Since I’ve been here it’s like this. We do okay for a while, then we throw a hand grenade in. We’ve got to be better than we were today.

It was more damp squib than hand grenade for the side’s most popular FPL asset, the 18%-owned Saint-Maximin. He provided no cover for Jamal Lewis (£4.5m), leaving the left-back to be tormented by Lamptey time and again.

And when the winger did attempt to stop the rampaging defender, it ended in a penalty for Brighton and an ankle injury for the midfielder which he failed to run off, leading to his substitution after 32 wretched minutes.

Lewis was even more unfortunate, having to leave the field late on with a head injury after being caught by the high boot of Yves Bissouma (£4.5m). The challenge was clumsy rather than malicious, but it led to a VAR-influenced red card for the midfielder.

Bruce issued a ‘wait and see’ verdict on the injuries to both his players and both managers agreed that Bissouma was right to be dismissed, with Potter possibly only needing to make do without his man for one league match should they progress in the EFL Cup this week.

Not that the Brighton boss has ever been frightened to change things up, and he was at it again on Sunday, switching from three centre-halves to a flat back four to counter Bruce’s decision to ditch his floundering 4-4-2 formation at half-time.

Potter’s move worked like a charm, but he will need to curb last season’s desire to change his personnel too regularly if Brighton are going to replicate the Newcastle performance on a regular basis.

If that turns out to be the case, then their assets will warrant further Fantasy consideration.

As for Newcastle, Sunday’s debacle has prompted a rush to sell their stars, with Saint-Maximin and Wilson both in the top ten for transfers out.

Based on their tough immediate – Spurs, Burnley, Man United and Wolves over the next four Gameweeks – that looks like a wise move.

Newcastle United XI (4-4-2): Darlow; Manquillo, Fernandez, Lascelles, Lewis; Hayden, Shelvey (Joelinton 72′), Hendrick, Saint-Maximin (Fraser 33′); Carroll (Almiron 45′), Wilson.

Brighton and Hove Albion XI (3-4-3): Ryan; White, Dunk, Webster; Lamptey (Burn 58′), Bissouma, Alzate, March (Lallana 78′); Trossard, Maupay, Connolly (Jahanbakhsh 90′).

For anyone that's interested, here's a review of GW3 from last season. Data from transfermarkt

    --- Bournemouth 1 - 3 Man City ---
Transfermarkt community predictions: 98.1% City win

City came into their 3rd game of the season off the back of a 5-0 away at West Ham (Sterling hat trick) and a 2-2 at home to Spurs (Sterling + Aguero). Sterling scored here for the 3rd game in a row, but Aguero stole the headlines with a brace. This was a sign of things to come as Sterling's form plummeted from GW4 onwards whilst Aguero continued to do well until he inevitably got injured a few weeks later. Harry Wilson scored a brilliant free kick to frustrate all the Zinchenko owners out there.

This season, City are at home to Leicester in GW3. Aguero is still out, the consensus is that this benefits Sterling. Bournemouth have been relegated.

    --- Tottenham 0 - 1 Newcastle ---
Transfermarkt community predictions: 97.8% Spurs win

Spurs came into their 3rd game of the season as heavy favourites having held City to an impressive 2-2 draw the previous week. Many brought in Harry Kane as captain following his 13-point haul in GW1. Instead it was Joelinton who grabbed the goal and 3BPs, his first and final goal for several months.

This season, lo and behold, it's the same match. Pochettino has been replaced by Jose who despite being a master bus parker is not necessarily as renowned for his ability to break down opposition buses. Son and Kane have just combined for an ungodly 45 points against the Southampton high line in GW2, we could see 4 or 5 instead against Steve Bruce this week.

    --- Man Utd 1 - 2 Crystal Palace ---
Transfermarkt community predictions: 97.3% Utd win

I was at this game. It was crap. We were heavily reliant on the pace of Daniel James, which says it all really. But the signs were there, as the masses were blinded by a 4-0 opening day win over Chelsea, the underlying stats flattered to deceive and a stale 1-1 draw at Wolves in GW2 preceded this upset. Palace came into this game thoroughly unfancied having scored 0 goals in their first 2, losing to a Lord-inspired Sheffield United in GW2. United proceeded to win 6 points from their next 6 whilst Palace took 10 points from the same period.

This season, this match has already happened, so almost a carbon copy of United's start to last season, except minus the good parts (no 4-0 starter this time). United face a resurgent Brighton side this week whilst Palace are underdogs again at home to Everton.

    --- Liverpool 3 - 1 Arsenal ---
Transfermarkt community predictions: 88.7% Liverpool win

The champions-to-be came into this match off the back of 4-1 and 2-1 wins in the first 2, in both cases conceding the consolation after scoring all their goals. It was to be the same in GW3 as Liverpool raced into a 3-0 lead before Arsenal randomly grabbed one back in the last 5 minutes. Many had sold Mo Salah after his GW2 blank but Salah scored twice in this one and got 15 points. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang got himself an assist after also being sold by the masses following a measly return of 12 points from 2 easy fixtures.

This season, again we've got the same fixture. Salah again blanked in GW2 and Aubameyang, the ultimate model of consistency with 205 points in both his previous seasons, is again sitting on 12 points at the start of GW3. Make of that what you will.

    --- Norwich 2 - 3 Chelsea ---
Transfermarkt community predictions: 84.7% Chelsea win

All aboard the Pukki express after his hat trick against Newcastle in GW2 - the big man continued his form here with an 11 point haul against Chelsea. However it turns out he wasn't the striker to own - that would have been Tammy Abraham whose 13 point return was the beginning of an insane 3-match run of 13,13,14 before regressing to his trolling ways. Norwich had already developed a reputation for free flowing attacking football underpinned by a garbage defence and this match was no surprise at all.

This season, Chelsea are away at West Brom, another promoted side who are capable of attacking and less capable of defending. They follow that up with 2 home games, against Palace and Southampton. Here's hoping for 40 points for Timo Werner over those 3 fixtures.

    --- Wolves 1 - 1 Burnley ---
Transfermarkt community predictions: 76% Wolves win

Interesting to see the masses predict a Wolves win here because I had Nick Pope in goal and was devastated when Jimenez smashed in a 97th minute penalty to take a share of the points (and all 3 bonus, as usual). Ashley Barnes was flavour of the month for Burnley at the time following up returns of 13 and 5 with another 7 points here. This was Wolves' 3rd consecutive draw to start the season as they struggled with Europa League, not recording a win until GW7, whilst Burnley had 1 win (SOU) and 1 defeat (ars) before this draw.

This season, Wolves don't have European distractions, and have much better form going into a matchup with West Ham in GW3 that begins a very kind fixture run. Burnley are at home to Southampton whom they beat 3-0 in GW1 last season.

    --- Aston Villa 2 - 0 Everton ---
Transfermarkt community predictions: 66.4% Everton win

Everton started last season with 2 clean sheets (0-0 cry, 1-0 WAT) before falling to a defeat away to Aston Villa, who despite being unfancied, had given a good account of themselves in defeats to Spurs (3-1) and Bournemouth (2-1) beforehand. Everton's team that day contained 8 players who started the most recent win over WBA, with only Bernard, Siggy and Schneiderlin having been removed. Safe to say DCL was still a donkey back then and Richarlison wasn't worth 50 million.

This season, Everton are away at unfancied Palace which is a banana skin of a fixture in my opinion. Obviously the biggest change is that Carlo is far superior to Marco Silva but this will be a close one. Villa are away at Fulham.

    --- Sheffield Utd 1 - 2 Leicester ---
Transfermarkt community predictions: 56.9% Leicester win

Sheffield United were still very much a surprise package off the back of a 14-point haul from the Lord in GW2 but those who jumped on the bandwagon were welcomed with a wholesome 0 points as Leicester pooped the party. Jamie Vardy scored and got 8 points following 2 blanks, ahead of a 16 point haul in GW4. Harvey Barnes scored a worldie in a cameo.

This season, Sheffield United are well-established as a PL side and face newcomers Leeds. Leicester are away at Man City.

    --- Brighton 0 - 2 Southampton ---
Transfermarkt community predictions: 45.6% Brighton win

Brighton started the season, err, brightly, with a thoroughly impressive 3-0 win away to Watford followed by a 1-1 draw with West Ham. Southampton meanwhile were rubbish in a 3-0 defeat to Burnley before running Liverpool close in GW2. That made Brighton slight favourites for this one but Florin Andone soon got himself sent off and ruined the game. Andone got ushered out the door to Turkey soon after and Brighton haven't looked back, with Maupay now well established in the forward role. Djenepo and Redmond got the goals for Southampton with Ings grabbing an assist.

This season, Brighton face a wounded Man United but they themselves are in good form again, having just smashed 3 past Newcastle. Southampton followed a fantastic end of last season up with a horrendous start to this one and are away at Burnley this week.

    --- Watford 1 - 3 West Ham ---
    Transfermarkt community predictions: 45% draw

I don't think anyone particularly cares about this one, but most notably Seb Haller scored a brace for 13 points to start an ill-fated bandwagon. Safe to say that won't happen again.

Inasked this earlier and people were saying to ditch the Chelsea players but seems like a bad time with them playing Brom next.

    Basically I want:

    TTA
    JRod
    Werner
    James

I am 1.3m short so need to decide which two are more essential and which two to downgrade.

    TTA -> VVD
    JRod -> Zaha
    Werner -> Ings/Jimenez
    James -> Taylor

So which two do I keep and which two should be downgraded?

I dare not take out TTA, so werner has to go. Everton's fixtures aren't appealing actually so I would take out jrod also. You could also down jrod to adama and James to Taylor to keep werner.

Wolves didnt play that well vs SHU. They conceded loads of crosses, loads of shots and loads of possession... with 2 new wing backs - and Traore as wing back is terrible - they looked very shaky for long periods of time.

Better stats. More nailed. More routes to points. Cheaper

Only thing stopping you is that you want 3 defenders, but with the way Wolves play, you're better off with Jim +/- D than just a mid

    Anyone interested in Mason Mount?

He could be the Chelsea differential for this good run of fixtures. Havertz was the one sacrificed for the red card. Mount looks nailed to me until Pulisic returns and there's no indication when that might be. For 6.5m, he could be the perfect ticket for the short term before moving him on for the next player with hot fixtures.

        What's wrong with Mount?

Last year he got 7g 6a. That's 3 more goals than Zaha's 4g 6a and loads of people are putting Zaha in their WC teams.

Chelsea's fixtures are really good. Their first two games were tough and unlikely to be indicative of their actual potential.

I just can't see him outscore players like Barnes, Hamez, Grealish etc

Seems like a transfer waiting to happen and he hasn't particularly impressed in the first 2 games.

I'm hoping Grealish can seduce me into buying him. Fulham up next!

I tried this for the start of the season. He was woeful against Brighton and similarly terrible against Liverpool. I transferred him out last GW for Rodriguez which was a great decision. I took a punt for the reasons you give now but he does not look good or that involved in the attack.

    TAA KWP Taylor Mitchell
    Auba Salah Son ASM
    Werner Martial

    Steer Douglas Soucek Davis

    Would you:
    A) wildcard
    B) Auba + ASM -> KDB/Sterling + Pereira/Podence for a -4 hit?

      both reasonable.
5.5 is a bit of a lottery. i can see a scenario where folk end up wasting transfers jerking between them

Praet a no for me, as much as I think he's a brilliant footballer. He's more of a box to box player imo and a rotation risk with Madders lurking. Diangana looked lively but West Brom will struggle I reckon.

Better options kicking about for sure. Podence and Klich both safer.

Basically spending most of your transfers on what are said to be high-value moves involving heavy hitters, getting in the best captain option for each week even if a hit is required.

So basically an aggressive, risk-loving manager (the other types being risk-averse and risk-neutral). I think Luke Disable from FFS is quite risk-loving, although I'm not sure he's that good. He appears in some of the videos.

    Martinez (Steer)
TAA -Saiss - Mitchell - Lamptey (Justin)
    Salah - J Rodriguez - KDB - Son (Alzate)
    Werner - DCL (Davies)

    0.3m in the bank

Possibly werner to jimmenz or jesus GW4 depending on the result of chelsea vs west brom

Justin is also on the back of my mind, considering pereira will be back from GW5.

Either Costa or Klich likely to gain you .1?

Picked up Klich at 5.5 so i need one more rise from him, but its looking unlikely.

Costa is rising tonight and has more transfers in, do you think its a better bet to get him? I only have one slot.

No, there are too many options at 5.5. Once Costa goes up 0.1, buyers will go for someone else.

    RMWCT:

    Martinez-Steer
    James-Justin-Lamptey-Taylor-Mitchell
    Salah-Sterling-KDB-Son-Podence
    Jimenez-Wood-Brewster

Next 3 for Burnley are very good, then I am looking at Wood->Watkins GW6.

I have another draft with Pulisic or another 8.5 mid and Werner up top instead of Wood. So:

    A. Sterling+Wood
    B. Pulisic/8.5 + Werner

He was always very streaky in the bundy - and to be honest I can see why - some teams will get lucky & either catch him offside or he'll fluff his lines - but then every once in a while he'll just get in the zone & go loco

As I was saying below - Last season he seemed to go on these massive all-or-nothing boom/bust cycles with very little middle ground

      E.g. GW4-9 last season 1 goal & 5 blanks in 6 fixtures

Swiftly followed by 20 returns in his next 9 games (14G 6A)

Then 7 blanks in he next 8 games etc etc

He really needs to find his "Mainz" (6G 3A vs Mainz in 2 games last year)

Wouldn't be suprised to see West Brom maybe fulfill that role & him tear them a new arzehole in the process - he's been like a little dangerous wasp on the eye test so far - zipping about trying to sting people, he just hasn't connected yet but if/when he does i'd say it'll be painful
