Could we see Werner drop in price this week? I'm on a WC so wouldn't be against that.

Podence is nice and all, but isn't Wolves' big draw their defense?

They put up elite defensive numbers last season not offense. They only scored 51 goals, tied 9th with Southampton. Why not pick up Boly instead? He's the same price as Podence. (Assuming you already have Saiss).

Chelsea's new keeper will be confirmed this week. James over double Wolves def is tempting.

        Why not all?

I'm contemplating a backline of Robbo Boly Saiss James. That would be really strong over the next few weeks. No issues with nailedness.

Don't want a 433 for sure. You prefer Son over Jimenez which means you can do Podence to Boly which still looks better.

Bale (£9.5m) and Reguilón (£5.5m) both added.

Both prices as expected IMO, although was some hope that Bale would be priced identically to Son (£9.0m).

I'm really tempted by Bale. I know he hasn't played much, but he's world class and has a point to prove. It's literally just down to whether he can stay fit enough. I won't be moving for him as soon as he's declared fit to play, but if he gets through that first game... well...

Reguilón is looking a good option too. Should add some attacking verve down the left hand side. Interesting to see how this impacts on Son's output, but feel that he will likely benefit. If Spurs change to a 3-5-2, both players are even better options.

    What do we reckon?

      Big wait and see.

Reguilon at 5.5m if he's as attacking as he can be, might be gold if he's played in a 3-5-2.

No interest in Bale until he's on the field and starting.

Well, Doherty clearly favors playing as a wingback in a 3-5-2. That was where he was best at Wolves. And Reguilon is also super attacking. It makes sense. The question is whether Mourinho has adapted to the modern game. He still looks a bit of a dinosaur out there with his 4-2-3-1.

A bit of a dinosaur. The 4-2-3-1 was in vogue 10 years ago now.

Funny. I see Klopp pulling it out now and then. The thing that arguably makes Mourinho a "dinosaur", isnt the formation itself - more the lack of flexibility that others show.

Not saying it's not a valid formation even today. But the height of 4-2-3-1 was at the 2010 world cup. It's since been displaced by 4-3-3 as the dominant formation and also the new breed of 3-5-2 popularized by Wolves and Sheff Utd.

Ah yes, Sheffield United and Wolves - the true pinnacles of football. They didnt even "invent" it, it was Conte who popularized it during his Chelsea time. Its more so the personell you have and the security it provides. Saying one formation is inherently superior to another is just a very simplistic way of looking at football imo.

Steve Bruce's Hull City were playing wing backs in the PL well before Conte rocked up 😉

Glenn Hoddle introduced wingbacks to the Premier League in 1993 when he was Chelsea manager, and Terry Venables used them at Euro 96 when he was England manager, but then they went out of fashion for a few years.

It's not just whether Bale's fit though - it's whether he can fit into Mou's system, or whether Mou can adapt his system to fit Bale. It really needs to be a 3-4-3 with flying wingbacks. I'd give it time to settle. Regulion could come in straight away though, especially if you wavered over Doherty or you already have Davies and can upgrade.

Agreed, there was an article on sky sports only last week which went through the hypothesis for a spurs 3-4-3 moving forward. I think we saw the first steps towards that on the field on Sunday with Kane dropping deep between the lines in a Firmino like manner in order to playmake for Son. We have seen the first steps towards that off field with the recruitment of 2 wingbacks and a new winger. If they sign another centre back then I think that would confirm it, as I still think they are short there.

not interested in Bale so far ... got in Son in my team and money is tight ... maybe an option In later wildcard draft
For Reguilon time will tell ... there are many options for 5,5 and spurs are so far pretty open at the back.

WOW Bale so overpriced! Injury prone and not the same player that he used to be. LMAO Son is three times better player than Bale and he comes with lower price. So much better value out there for less price. I would like to know what's the thinking behind that price??

      • 12 Years

As a spurs fan I am not so sure I agree with a lot of these comments about Mou switching to wingbacks. Surely Kane, Son and Bale will feature heavily and having two attacking wingbacks would mean having to have two defensively disciplined central midfielders. It is evident from recent games and post-lockdown that Lo Celso is very important to the way spurs play and is one of the most important players in Mou's system. I cannot see Mourinho settling with Lo Celso and one other in central midfield. Seems a bit too lightweight

Honestly shocked by the negativity around Bale. It has been a long time since he’s been in the PL but a few seasons of being marginalised by Zidane cannot cloud what standard of player he is at the top of his game. He’s 31!

Providing he can get fit (big if) I think there’s enormous potential to out score that 9.5 price tag.

Injury prone players are not a problem in FPL.
If He scores 5 in 5 and then gets injured. I'm happy owning him for just those 5 weeks and then transferring him out.
          Similar with Aguero.

Last night I did ASM > Podence and AUBA > KDB. I took a four point hit. I did this because a) they were the players I wanted and b) to avoid price drops and catch price rises.

It just felt right as I know squad value can really help you out later in the season.

This had me thinking. Is it really worth it early in the season to take a hit and be aggressive with building squad value?

    Discuss.

Last season I took about three all year. This one however felt right.

It depends on how the season pans out. I followed a TV growth strategy for the past 2 seasons - 2 years ago it helped me get to a 50k finish. Last season it didn't help because some great scoring lower-priced players (Ings, Greenwood, etc.) came through, and you didn't need to have 4 premiums and 2 sub-premiums to score well. This year I'm only taking a hit if I have to, due to injury or if I'm convinced the new player will genuinely outscore my old player in that GW. Case in point - I currently have Werner who's about to drop in price. I likely want to move him onto either Jimi or Jesus, but I'm not convinced those 2 other options will outscore him this week. Therefore I'm holding and not taking the hit.

I get that sometimes you have to take hits due to injuries etc. But in this case I'm thinking of being aggressive and building value which will help me in the second half of the season. For example that -4 hit and increase in team value could result in me being able to select better players in the second half of the season which could potentially pay back that -4. Usually I play an early wildcard to catch the price rises/avoid drops. But I'm holding it as long as possible this year.

That was the point I was trying to make above (obviously poorly) - some seasons the additional team value (TV) helps out when you do your second wildcard, for example. Last season I took around 30 hits (120 points) to grow team value - I think I got to around 107.5m in value, but by GW 30 I had a great team with 4.0m sitting in the bank because a number of great budget options emerged and you didn't need the super-premium players. If I had taken the normal 10-15 additional hits then the extra 60 points would have meant a top 35k finish for me...

Yeah I understand your point. So from what your saying maybe you were being a bit too aggressive and didn't need the additional team value due to the amount of budget options available. I must admit I do try and build a bit of value while trying to pick the players who will score the most points in the first half of the season. I don't bother as much in the second half of the season. I do feel my case was the right call. Podence could potentially be seriously good value at 5.5.

Auba to KDB for a hit? Probably a good move for free.

    Current WC team

    Steer McCarthy
Mitchell Justin Robertson Van Dijk Coady
Jorginho Zaha De Bruyne Son Sterling
    DCL Jimenez Davis

    0,5 ITB.
Is it ok? 😀 also thinking about Sterling-> Salah, Zaha -> Mount.

    So the question is:

    A) Robbo & Foden
    B) Van Dijk & Zaha/Barnes

Rest of the WC team is as follows:

    Martinez - Steer
    TAA - Robbo? - Castange - Saiss - Mitchell
    Salah - Son - Zaha? - KDB - Klich
    DCL - Mitro - Davis

    Thoughts appreciated

How many GWs do people think Justin and Mitchell have in them? Is Ferguson a viable option when he’s fit?

At a guess, I'd say 2-3 each. If you time it well, you can sell Mitchell for 4.1 and get Fergie for 4.0 seamlessly.

What do you mean, how many gameweeks does Justin have in him? Pereira is still injured, no? He has to return to full fitness and then play on the reserves for a bit before he can return to full first team duty.

'' Ricardo is still a period away, towards the end of October for him. He's still quite a way from playing'' - Will not be match fit so you'd imagine he'd return for WOL/liv.

Couldn't find anything solid on PVA so Mitchell should be fine for the foreseeable.

How nailed to start regularly are:

    1. Chelsea's James
    2. Leicesters' Justin
    3. Wolves Vinagre
    4. Palace's Mitchell
    5. Palace's Ferguson

Lastly, who is Everton's penalty taker?

All are on the verge of rotation and their starting role depend on another one's fitness issue

James 90% - Azpi will come in on occasion
Justin - nailed until Ricardo is back end of October/November
Marcal could be back next GW if injury isn't serious
PVA back in non-contact training along with Ferguson so Mitchell and Ward's place as regular full backs could be under threat

Rich or Rodriguez. My guess is Rodriguez

Currently trying to decide between replacing ASM with Podence or Foden.

Getting Podence leaves the door open to do Martial + Soucek --> KDB + Brewster next week if necessary.

Horrible week, falling down to 3m OR. What a start.

WC active, and standing like this with 0.8 ITB:

    Martinez (Steer)
    TAA Saiss Lamptey (Justin Mitchell)
    Salah KDB JRodriguez Klich (Burke)
    Werner Jimenez Mitrovic

Improvements? Justin could become Taylor. Son 4.5 vs Trent Klich + cash is up in the air, as is Klich v Podence

I've gone very similar on my WC. Basically I have DCL and Foden instead of your Mitro and Hamez. Also I have squeezed in Castagne over Justin

Hows the wc? Template and missing Werner but I think it's the best u can get. Cant have everyone and see the west brom game being a 2-0 rather than a smashing

    Martinez (Steer)
    TAA Castagne Saiss (Lamptey Mitchell)
    Salah KDB Son Foden Podence
    Jimenez DCL (Brewster)

How is this for a WC draft?
Really like the Palace fixtures, so that's the reason why I picked Guaita.

    Guaita
    TAA - James - Saiss
    Salah - KDB - Zaha - Son - Podence
    DCL - Jimmy

    Steer - Mitchell - Davis - Struijk

    Salah | Bruno | Son | Rodriguez | Soucek
    Kane | Wilson

    Steer | Mitchell | Davis | Buur

FT used - Auba to Salah

    McCarthy
    TAA Davies Taylor
    Rodriguez Son Zaha Salah
    Adams Jimenez Werner

    Bench: Button, Mitchell, Justin, Stephens

If you're confident your Starting XI is solid and won't need transfers, get Mitchell and switch to Fergie when he's ready. If you think you can put out XI but might need to make regular transfers, get Fergie now so you don't waste a hit.
Dunne should be done - Tarks ought to be back next game.
