Save potential and improved Villa defence boost Martínez’s FPL appeal

Aston Villa 1-0 Sheff Utd

  • Goals: Ezri Konsa (£4.5m)
  • Assists: Tyrone Mings (£5.0m)
  • Penalties saved: Emi Martínez (£4.5m)
  • Penalties missed: John Lundstram (£5.5m)
  • Red cards: John Egan (£5.0m)
  • Bonus points: Konsa x3, Martínez x2, Mings x1

Aston Villa’s defence picked up where they left on in Project Restart as they saw out a 1-0 win over Sheffield United in Gameweek 2.

Dean Smith’s men made major improvements at the back following the enforced suspension of the Premier League, ranking inside the division’s top six for big chances conceded, shots on target faced and expected goals conceded (xGC).

And all of that was on display against the Blades, as they registered a third successive home clean sheet in the league.

A key player in that shutout was new goalkeeper Emi Martínez (£4.5m), who already looks like a strong contender for the best option in his price bracket moving forward.

The former Arsenal man was on-hand to preserve the Villa clean sheet on Monday night as he produced an incredible save from John Lundstram‘s (£5.5m) penalty. Combined with the shut-out and a total of two bonus, Martínez registered a 13-point haul for Gameweek 2.

That said, for all Villa’s assuredness at the back on Monday night, there was, of course, one big mitigating factor: Sheffield United. Not only have the Blades really struggled to find any kind of goal threat in their first two games, but they also had to play 78 minutes of Gameweek 2 with 10 men.

A long ball over the top of Sheffield United’s high line pitted the rapid Ollie Watkins (£6.0m) against John Egan (£5.0m) in the 12th minute. The centre-back had no choice but to hold the striker back, earning a red card for denying a goal-scoring opportunity.

Chris Wilder was then forced to remove David McGoldrick (£5.5m) in the 31st minute, replacing him with Ethan Ampadu (£4.5m) and deploying a largely ineffective 4-4-1 formation.

While most teams would have found it relatively easy to keep a clean sheet in such circumstances, there is still plenty to like about Martínez moving forward. With Villa generally more assured of defensive returns at home anyway, the fact that Leeds, Southampton, Brighton and Newcastle are four of the next five to visit Villa Park bodes well.

And even though Smith’s men are set to face Liverpool (home), Leicester (away), Arsenal (away) and Wolves (away) between now and Gameweek 12, Martínez displayed enough save potential during Project Restart to convince any potential buyers of his credentials outside of the favourable fixtures. During that period, only the relegated Tim Krul made more saves than the Spaniard (28).

Martínez also looks like the better option when compared with Ezri Konsa (£4.5m) or Tyrone Mings (£5.0m), even though we have only seen Villa play once this season. The former scored the only goal of the game but it was his only touch in the penalty box all night, while Mings arguably remains too expensive to consider seriously.

Furthermore, one of the main things that Smith changed to improve his team’s defensive prospects at the end of last season was to rein in the marauding runs made by his full-backs so it remains to be seen what Matt Targett (£4.5m) and Matty Cash (£5.0m) can offer this season.

As was well-documented during Project Restart, the more conservative use of Villa’s full-backs continues to pose some restrictions on the team’s level of goal threat, so Fantasy managers may want to give Smith’s front-three a little more time before investing too heavily.

Naturally, Jack Grealish (£7.0m) remains the hub of the team, creating chances and using his position as a left-hand wide-forward to register a healthy number of shots on goal. Against Sheffield United, he was mostly restricted to lower quality opportunities, the sort we are used to seeing from Mohamed Salah (£12.1m). An 80th-minute effort summed up his evening perfectly. Grealish showed some nice feet to get into the left-hand corner of the box, flashing a powerful shot at goal and grazing the outside of the post.

Then, Grealish got on the end of a counter-attacking cross from Trézéguet (£5.5m) in stoppage time, unleashing a fierce left-footed shot, only to see it blocked by Lundstram and a crowd of Sheffield United defenders.

The addition of Watkins may help in that respect. He added some much-needed pace to Villa’s front-line, which he used to good effect and might have capitalised on it, were it not for Egan’s 12th-minute foul. He went close again in the 77th minute, cutting inside on the left-hand side of the box and curling an effort just over the top-right corner of Aaron Ramsdale‘s (£5.0m) goal.

Meanwhile, the state of Sheffield United’s defence will be of encouragement to Fantasy managers with Leeds and Arsenal assets in the coming weeks.

The Blades have been on the back foot for large spells in each of their first two games of the season and must face an in-form Leeds attack without the lynch-pin of their back-three on Sunday afternoon, as Egan is suspended for one match. Promising youngster Ampadu is perhaps the most likely to replace the Republic of Ireland international.

Meanwhile, the next five Gameweeks pit Sheffield United against sides with important Fantasy defenders too, including Leeds, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City. Anyone invested in the backlines of those sides will have enjoyed what they have seen, or rather, haven’t seen, from Sheffield United so far this season.

After the first two Gameweeks, no club has registered fewer shots than Wilder’s men (13) and they are the only team yet to find the net in 2020/21.

There will be some Fantasy managers keeping an eye on Sheffield United’s attack though, as budget midfielder Oliver Burke (£4.5m) was deployed as a centre-forward on Monday night.

Unfortunately, Egan’s sending-off occurred too soon in the game for us to glean too much of what Burke can offer as an out-of-position option this season, perhaps something to look out for in subsequent matches.

Despite being left to plough a lone furrow in a 4-4-1 formation, the former West Bromwich Albion man did perform admirably in the rare moments when he was in possession. Burke showed off his pace on sparing counter-attacks and was denied an almost certain assist in the first half by a Targett foul.

He played an incredible through-pass from the edge of the box, which connected with the overlapping run of Chris Basham (£5.0m) inside Villa’s six-yard box. It looked to be a certain goal before Targett stuck out a leg and fouled the marauding defender.

With Oliver Norwood (£5.0m) and Billy Sharp (£6.0m) not in the starting line-up and McGoldrick already sacrificed for tactical reasons, Lundstram was the man to step up and take the penalty, having also assumed responsibility for corners. As already mentioned, it was not a bad effort at all, simply well-saved by Martínez. Whether the former budget defender gets another chance from the spot probably relies on personnel rather than the quality of his penalty. The chances of Norwood, Sharp and McGoldrick all being off the pitch the next time Sheffield United win a penalty seems rather unlikely.

Aston Villa XI (4-3-3): Martínez; Targett, Konsa, Mings, Cash; McGinn, D Luiz, Hourihane (Davis 62′); Grealish, Watkins, Trézéguet.

Sheffield United XI (3-5-2): Ramsdale; O’Connell, Egan, Basham (McBurnie 68′); Stevens, Fleck (Osborn 63′), Berge, Lundstram, Baldock; McGoldrick (Ampadu 31′), Burke.

The bench is fine. Mitchell is playing.
I would consider Burke over Anguissa and Forster over Steer if I was to nitpick.

Im playing against 6+ million other players atm, I don't look at individual groups (like ffscout) at this moment of the season. When we are later in the season and top 10k stats become relevant, then I will start looking at an individual group and their ownership of players.
I get you tho, you expect people on here to be your main competition because we take the game seriously and expect the cream rise to top, so for you he is differential in that sense if you know what I mean 🙂

to be fair he could well be a season keeper. he is quite likely to be challenging for the golden boot and classed as a mid he will be getting a big score. the main problem with him is he is unreliable when it comes to captaincy. as a perma captain set and forget he is pretty good though.

    Martinez / Steer
    XXX / Gabriel / Ayling / XXX / Mitchell
    Salah / KDB / Son / XXX / 4.5
    Werner / Jimenez / Bamford

    A) VVD + Lamptey + Foden

    C) RJames + Saiss + Hamez

For me, I think it's B. I thought Podence looked really solid for 5.5... Just not positive he is nailed. But that is the problem if you go with A too...Foden... With Pep driving the bus, you never know if he will start or play...

defence is a bit on the weak side.

not a fan of double city premiums (or >2 premiums). reason being no player is worth more than £10m unless you will captain them. its optimal in my book to have two premiums covering the two big clubs so you have a clear captaincy option each week. 2 from the same club makes no sense because even when they have a favourable fixture you cannot captain both

If you think Son can average 5.6 points per game then Sterling needs to average 7.2 ppg to be an equally good option value wise.

Son over Sterling allows Digne over Taylor. Without captaincy (it's possible to cap Son, mind), this is likely to give more overall points

it should be noted that Son & Pulisic are both elite players in FPL terms. they just havent had that massive season (Auba has) and dont play for the title winning clubs.

funnily enough i did a similar analysis at the start of last year and the best pp90 players outside the established premiums were Martial, Moura, Mahrez & Sane.

We know what season martial had, the others didnt get the minutes but all have the potential to.

In an ideal world i would only have 1 super premium and perma-cap, but 2 is optimal to capture fixtures. 3 is suboptimal as they are not as good value as the Son/Pulisic's of the world.

Have you done an analysis of KDB of fixture difficulty vs points last season. It makes no difference who he plays but there is a big difference between home vs away.
There is definitely an argument to perma captain KDB and not own any other premiums with the occasional Son/Pulisic captaincy to cover really difficult away games.

So your basing your decisions on stats from over 4 years ago? Check sterling’s record with Jesus playing instead of Aguero. It’s phenomenal because he takes up the poacher role in the box. Son is playing a restricted role under mourinho who is no pochettino

"2 from the same club makes no sense because even when they have a favourable fixture you cannot captain both."

There's plenty of weeks coming up where Liverpool & Man City both have favourable fixtures. Doesn't matter if you have KDB & Sterling or KDB & Salah, you can still only captain one of them.

What about the fact that the vast majority of Salah hauls are at home compared to mane away. Same happens at city with KDB at home and Sterling away. Last year post lockdown I captained KDB at home and sterling away and it propelled my rank

        2. Dr. Rog
          • 14 Years

the game is about finding value - and my argument is simply this: the uber premiums are not good value. they only offer good value when you captain them and get double points. if you cannot captain them as often as you should, then there it is optimal to spread the funds around the rest of the team.

I am not saying that Son outscores Sterling. I am saying that Son + TAA outscores Sterling + Shaw, and that should be plainly obvious. Now Sterling*2+Shaw is another matter, but how often are you gonna be applying a 2x multiplier when its sitting on KdB instead...

        3. Dr. Rog
          • 14 Years
          3 years, 7 months ago

ok, Salah + KdB + Sterling vs Salah + KdB.

In the former case, Sterling is never going to be captained all things being equal. So you never get to apply a mulitplier to his points - and he isnt worth 12mln without the multiplier. His pp90 arent 33% better than Sons...

Might be a bit hard, but I guess it comes down to running with two or three strikers. Could be a little light at the back without the likes of TAA/Digne/Robbo but feel could get some returns with the money up front/mid.

Both of them over any other premium player (including Salah) because captaincy rotates really well between them until week 8. Son then becomes Fernandes until week 12 when you finally get Salah in.

You don't buy into the theory that Salah is rubbish away from home when Mane plays?
I'd rather captain KDB week 4 & 6 (lee, whu) and have Son captain weeks 5, 7 & 8 (WHU, BHA, wba).

KDB averaged 8.7 points per home game and 5.7 per away game last season.
Salah was 8.2 at home and 5.6 away.

Don't normally do this but after a shocking start I think I need some assistance. I'm at 3.5 million, haven't been done here in a long time. I'm trying to set my team up for future weeks, on WC of course...

    Lampty Saiss TAA Taylor Mitchell

    DCL Jimenez Wood

Lacking Chelsea, but haven't seem then click yet so it's a risk I will take. Lacking Spurs but the fixture pile up is putting me off. Also, they are not going to play that saints back line every week.

As a City fan, it does feel like Foden is first choice at that winger position. Seems like Pep lost trust in Mahrez again, who has started none of the last 6 matches. Rotation will occur but at 6.5 Foden is too good of an opportunity for me not to take.

Transfer window being open is one i think.
Semedo (I'm sorry if I've written incorrectly) for example can put Podence out of team.

Or if United don't sign any RW Greenwood might become a good option by GW 5.

It's effectively a WC based on what happened last weekend.

The same players people are wildcarding to get in could well do nothing this weekend, whilst players that are being ignored might have their turn.

My team and start has been poor, but a few 4 point hits are really all that's needed to hopefully get back on track.

I've just eliminated the weakest link, ASM, and swapped Auba to KdB.

If I WC now I'd pretty much be getting last weekends team of the week.

      1. Christina.
        • 14 Years
        3 years, 7 months ago

true, but my problem is the players that did well this wk(KdB/Jimenez etc) are proven in fpl and have great fixtures coming up. (Plus they will increase in price soon) Add to that I can rid myself of McC/Davies/Soucek/Martial who have done nothing and could be dropped and its a win -win for a WC.

  28. Chuism

Afternoon lads! Thoughts on this WC team for GW3?

    Martinez (Steer)
TAA - Saiss - Lamptey (Mitchell, Dune)
    Salah - KDB - J.Rodriguez - Podence - Son
    DCL - Werner (Davies)

If werner does well vs west brom, he keeps his place. If he blanks, either Jimenez / Martial / Ings / Wood can take his place.

I'm aware that the defence on the bench looks weak but on most game weeks they will not play as i'm planning to line up 3-5-2 and rotate Lamptey and Mitchel.

Think I'm done with my WC team, very happy with it now:

    Martinez (Button)
    TAA Saiss Lamptey (Mitchell Dunne)
    Salah KDB Son Zaha (Anguissa)
    Jimenez DCL Wood

Hard to ditch JRod but Zaha allows for a 0.5 upgrade in defence.
