Football Index: Can form, fixtures and Spurs rumours make Danny Ings a good bet?

Sponsored by Football Index

A great philosopher – or was it country and western legend Kenny Rogers – once wrote that ‘you’ve got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em’.

The point is that we’re only two weeks into the Premier League season and, while my Football Index portfolio is currently showing a modest profit, I’m trying to divine the time to cash in on certain players.

For the uninitiated, Football Index (FI) is a kind of stockmarket where people use real money to bet on footballers, with the value of these shares then going up or down based on market forces.

FI is, generally speaking, a game for the medium to long term, with mechanisms in place to discourage those looking to make a quick buck by selling players whose share price has moved sharply upwards not long after they’ve bought into them.

As a result, I’m having to exercise patience when it comes to selling my stake in a certain hat-trick scoring Everton player.

The Toffees have made a great start to the season, and they have a decent enough schedule to suggest there’s more to come.

But looking at the stats makes me think that my Everton man’s form is unsustainable. He’s scored four goals from eight attempts, whereas his strike partner has none from 12. Something’s got to give in that set-up, and I think it’s my player’s red hot form.

Time will tell, but with a resolute Crystal Palace defence to come next, it’s time that’s also dominating my thoughts – as in when is the right time to sell my Everton striker shares.

His sell price has yo-yoed all week, but I’m holding out for a decent profit to add to the 40p-per-share divided I’ve enjoyed, so I’ll probably be waiting until a lot later in the week when, hopefully, demand for him will ratchet up again.

Similarly, my Callum Wilson bet has brought in a few bob in dividends, but a woeful performance by Newcastle at the weekend has not done anything for his share price. Anything but plummet, that is.

If his sell price can shift closer to my original buy price then I’ll be tempted to move his shares on.

Otherwise, my bets are mainly long-term, which means I’ll probably have to watch Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s price drop below what I paid for him as a trip to Liverpool ushers in a nasty run of fixtures for the Gunners.

This Week I’ll Mostly Be Buying…

Someone or no-one, depending on how the market moves on the players mentioned above.

If I can take some value out of what I’ve already gambled on without taking a big hit because of low sell prices, then I’ll be considering betting on Southampton players.

Not the Saints defenders, you understand, as their manager’s current fetish for playing a high line is doing wonders… for oppositions teams’ goal difference.

But Danny Ings is scoring whatever the carnage at the other end of the pitch and his touch and finish for his first goal against Spurs were those of a man in sublime form.

Southampton have made an unholy mess of their start to this season, but their schedule is good. For a few more goals from Ings, at least.

The striker is currently available for around the £1.40 mark. And if rumours of a move to a ‘big club’ start up again as the transfer window starts shutting, then he could also bring in some media dividend as well.

For a real Saints punt, there’s midfielder James Ward-Prowse at £1.13.
Why? One of the mainstays of Fantasy Football Scout’s Members Area is Jonty’s ‘Goals Imminent’ table, and JWP is currently in it.

The stats version of ‘he’s definitely due one’, Goals Imminent normally works on data from the last four matches.

We’ve only had two so far, so everything needs to be taken with a pinch of salt, but Ward-Prowse has already registered five attempts this season, which is the same as Newcastle’s Wilson.

He’s scored 12 goals over the last two seasons and Southampton’s fixtures – especially an early October visit from West Brom – suggest he’ll be opening his 2020/21 account soon enough.

What do you mean by cover? He'll score less points than TAA or Robbo, but is priced less. It depends where you invest the price difference...

    RP - On a WC.

    Guaita • 4.0
    ________ • Reece James • Saiss • Lamptey • Mitchell
    Salah • KDB • ________ • Podence • 4.5
    Jesus • Jimenez • DCL

    Which combo would you prefer?

    A. Robertson + Foden (would be tripling up on City attack and good enough bench defenders to cover his benchings)
    OR
    B. Charlie Taylor + Son (have a nailed on Son over a rotating Foden but no Pool def. However, the other defenders are good enough to cover. Also Son let's me move to a Chelsea/United mid easily)

    Thoughts?

Do you expect Son to smash it? Teams won't be as silly as S'ton with a high line and slow players.

Yep true. Although he was making many infield runs with Son dropping back. Obviously don't expect a 4 goal return, but, the fixtures are there as well, he doesn't look likes he's hugging the sideline and he's on setpieces as well I think? He also lets me move to a United and/or a Chelsea midfielder easily in a single move when they become the talk of the town.

However, Robertson + Foden as a combo I feel is better because if Foden starts every week, he's no less than a 10m Midfielder which is why I'm on Robbo Foden atm.

B: Dyche loves to defend deep when he has injuries to key players & grind out a defensive display/clean sheet performance & Taylor was Wood's main source of crosses against Leicester. Son is the deep runner for Spurs at the moment seeing as how he & Kane have a one-drop-off-an-one-run through relationship at the at the moment.

You may want to swap Son for Greenwood & bank around 1.5m in a few weeks also.

I think eventually TAA will come back to his normal self, while Robbo will not be far away. I think for me, having TAA is better long term, but for the short term, Robbo should do well enough.

TAA is worth the extra 0.5 for offensive potential. Tsimikas will be eased in tho as is the norm with Klopp so Robbo also a good option.

Tough - next 5 or 6 fixtures look pretty evenly matched but I'd go for DCL in the short term. Southampton look a little lost on the creative side at the moment, and Adams looks like he is taking some of the chances away from Ings. DCL is the sole point man for a team that looks fluid going forward. Of course, he's also considerably cheaper.

DF Doherty, TAA, Targett, Vinagre, Mitchell
MF Aubameyang, Rashford, Son, M. Pereira, Reid
    FW Werner, Mitrovic, Che Adams

I think you need a premium defender, as they have potential to score high points for a low cost (compared to premium mids), so Trent stays. Werner will start to score - he looks quality and is clearly going to start most games - the all-new Chelsea midfield just need to gel a bit more. Jimi has a brilliant run of games coming up and will be the sole point man for Wolves.

For me, that leaves a choice between A or D. Between those, I assume Salah will score more highly, so it comes down to what the £3.1m less for Son does elsewhere in the team (i.e. if it is the difference between getting KDB v Mahrez I'd keep Son)

Ah bloody hell. Against my better judgement I've panicked and early wildcarded after a dire start (too many gambles). How does the following look?

    McCarthy
    TAA Saiss Mitchell
    Salah KdB Podence Zaha Foden
    Werner Jimi

    (Nyland, Ayling, Justin, Brewster)

Bit of a weak backline, and a lot riding on the mid-priced mids...

Why is Zaha being completely ignored? You don't have to compare him with Barnes. You can have both. With DCL

Lots of shots on target in the box for all three. Good fixtures short, medium and long terms. 7.2M max each. All of them can be replaced by cheaper or more expensive assets later

Heck, toss Rodriguez in there and you have funds for some serious defensive upgrades (Robbo + TAA) or one extra premium or two... While still in the template

I have another week of Grealish then will move to pick up Barnes for GW4. Zaha is on my watchlist as well though but think his performances may drop once the window shuts.

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 5 Years

Got him for GW2 after watching Palace in GW1. They seemed completely over their Restart beach performances, and Zaha hasn't been an out-and-out striker for a while, but there he was. I'll sell him if/when his performances drop off

Not sure there's a good argument for holding Grealish, since Villa has become far more defensive than they used to be (see Auba). He's still class and can score any time, but I feel his team's tactics are restricting him a bit. Again, he's class so can go on a goalscoring spree from here on, and maybe 10 men behind the ball isn't the best scouting game to judge him by.

        1. Miguel Sanchez
          • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Grealish was a bit of a punt with his opening two fixtures. Didn't really like how much he drfited in the first half but by the end of the second half he had had three decent chances and was unlucky not to score. Will see how he goes in the Fulham game but he was always a bit of a placeholder for whatever options emerged in the 7-7.5 bracket. Barnes, Foden and Zaha are probably the best options to replace him with right now.

Good point. I thought of Grealish too, but held back since I didn't have data and Barnes/Zaha already sprung to life with their penalty box stats in GW1. Might come good, and I agree it's a good idea to hold for one more

I like Zaha as an option but it's a crowded market with Foden, James and Barnes

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 5 Years
        3 years, 7 months ago

Nooooot that crowded in a 5-man midfield

And Foden not being nailed (if Pep sees him as a winger) is a bit problematic. A problem that isn't really there for the other four at 7.0 to 7.5 (including DCL). 6 if you include TAA and Robbo

My worry is these first two matches have been perfect for Zaha, with both teams playing really high defensive lines. He'll be popular against Brighton and Fulham, and those are exactly the type of games he'll struggle in. Hope I'm wrong tho, would love to see him do well and hit 12 plus goals.

Might sell him if that happens. I love his next two fixtures though. The exact kind of confident/expressive teams he can do well against (even if he blanks)

Tottenham have opened talks for Milan Skriniar as possible target. He's one of Mourinho's fav options as new centre-back [no more chances for a swap deal involving Ndombele]. Price tag is the main issue: Inter have asked €60m to sell Skriniar. White circle
