Football Index: Can form, fixtures and Spurs rumours make Danny Ings a good bet?

Sponsored by Football Index

A great philosopher – or was it country and western legend Kenny Rogers – once wrote that ‘you’ve got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em’.

The point is that we’re only two weeks into the Premier League season and, while my Football Index portfolio is currently showing a modest profit, I’m trying to divine the time to cash in on certain players.

For the uninitiated, Football Index (FI) is a kind of stockmarket where people use real money to bet on footballers, with the value of these shares then going up or down based on market forces.

FI is, generally speaking, a game for the medium to long term, with mechanisms in place to discourage those looking to make a quick buck by selling players whose share price has moved sharply upwards not long after they’ve bought into them.

As a result, I’m having to exercise patience when it comes to selling my stake in a certain hat-trick scoring Everton player.

The Toffees have made a great start to the season, and they have a decent enough schedule to suggest there’s more to come.

But looking at the stats makes me think that my Everton man’s form is unsustainable. He’s scored four goals from eight attempts, whereas his strike partner has none from 12. Something’s got to give in that set-up, and I think it’s my player’s red hot form.

Time will tell, but with a resolute Crystal Palace defence to come next, it’s time that’s also dominating my thoughts – as in when is the right time to sell my Everton striker shares.

His sell price has yo-yoed all week, but I’m holding out for a decent profit to add to the 40p-per-share divided I’ve enjoyed, so I’ll probably be waiting until a lot later in the week when, hopefully, demand for him will ratchet up again.

Similarly, my Callum Wilson bet has brought in a few bob in dividends, but a woeful performance by Newcastle at the weekend has not done anything for his share price. Anything but plummet, that is.

If his sell price can shift closer to my original buy price then I’ll be tempted to move his shares on.

Otherwise, my bets are mainly long-term, which means I’ll probably have to watch Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s price drop below what I paid for him as a trip to Liverpool ushers in a nasty run of fixtures for the Gunners.

This Week I’ll Mostly Be Buying…

Someone or no-one, depending on how the market moves on the players mentioned above.

If I can take some value out of what I’ve already gambled on without taking a big hit because of low sell prices, then I’ll be considering betting on Southampton players.

Not the Saints defenders, you understand, as their manager’s current fetish for playing a high line is doing wonders… for oppositions teams’ goal difference.

But Danny Ings is scoring whatever the carnage at the other end of the pitch and his touch and finish for his first goal against Spurs were those of a man in sublime form.

Southampton have made an unholy mess of their start to this season, but their schedule is good. For a few more goals from Ings, at least.

The striker is currently available for around the £1.40 mark. And if rumours of a move to a ‘big club’ start up again as the transfer window starts shutting, then he could also bring in some media dividend as well.

For a real Saints punt, there’s midfielder James Ward-Prowse at £1.13.
Why? One of the mainstays of Fantasy Football Scout’s Members Area is Jonty’s ‘Goals Imminent’ table, and JWP is currently in it.

The stats version of ‘he’s definitely due one’, Goals Imminent normally works on data from the last four matches.

We’ve only had two so far, so everything needs to be taken with a pinch of salt, but Ward-Prowse has already registered five attempts this season, which is the same as Newcastle’s Wilson.

He’s scored 12 goals over the last two seasons and Southampton’s fixtures – especially an early October visit from West Brom – suggest he’ll be opening his 2020/21 account soon enough.

    Wildcard time: 7 stick + 8 Twists
Should NEVER have sold Son for Bruno last mid week.
So back to original plan (with a few amendments). And this time gonna stick with plan unless injuries, suspensions or a rotation risk rise.

    Mccarthy >>> 4.0
TAA >>> Robbo (would rather own Trent)
    Doh >>> Vinagre
Tierney >>> Saiss (as always planned for GW3)
Auba >>> KDB (as always planned for GW3)
    ASM >>> James (Rodriguez)
    Brewster >>> DCL
Fernandes > back to > Son

    Ryan
    Robbo - James - Saiss
    Salah - KDB - Son - James
    Jimenez - DCL - Mitro

    Back ups: 4.0 - Vinagre - Burke - Mitchell

    G2G or something else?

    Robbo & James
    or
    TAA & Zaha

    A) Zaha + TAA
    B) Rodriguez + Robertson

Is Robertson actually on to do better than TAA this season looking at Liverpools slightly shifted shape?

In my opinion B, mostly because I think Rodriguez can make a mockery of his 7.5 price tag. We already know what Zaha can do

If it's even a factor at all which teams do you think lose out from games with no crowds and which teams might gain from it? I though Liverpool looked like they missed the Anfield roar v Leeds.

I'm on a very similar WC team except with Brewster + Klich instead of Podence + Davis (and different sub Goalie)

I know Davis came on as a sub last time round but surely worth a punt on Brewster if he goes somewhere else as a first teamer.

        I am thinking:

        Ryan (or Martinez.. toss coin)
        James, Saiss, Robbo
        Salah, KDB, Son, James
        Jimenez, DCL, Mitro*

Back ups: 4.0. Vinagre*, Burke*, Mitchell

      Silly comment. Not the GOAT.

It is a bi product of expansion. The funds gained to share third party endorsements are nothing but positive for us low lives in the forums.

You're probably the only one to chirpse any of the content in the article anyway. Notice how we all just demand critique on our teams, ignoring the details anyway.

      Who knew.

I treat these gambling articles like I do ads - train my eyes to skim past them. It is disappointing though - not what I paid a sub for.
Maybe next year if FFS isn't too greedy they'll make the members stuff free from everyone and get all their income from this nonsense (but I doubt it)

Agreed. I've been a member for a long time and it has gone down rapid big time. The frequency of member articles is very poor. Personally, I don't care for team reveals and the likes. Way overplaying the pro pundit angle too these past few seasons as well.

I've been here for 11 years. For the sake of a couple of click bait web links it does nothing but add growth to the project.

I agree, it has grown. Perhaps too much, lost in the ether of fast flicking comments to the point ANY response can steer an FPL manager, even if it is a dud one.

But give the gang a break eh. Especially a ten year veteran, let it be eh.

    Any saints on here?

I'm wondering if I should get Forster as my 4m keeper, I have a gut feeling McCarthy might get dropped sooner or later. I'm currently on Steer with Martinez as my starting keeper

    Any opinions would be welcome

Not a Saint, but i think in time Heaton will get fit and be #2 keeper at Villa. The 4m keepers most likely to get a gig imo are Forster and Button.

It doesn't if Steer is 3rd choice at Villa. At least if you've got Marty and Forster and Forster comes in and does a better job than Marty, you get to switch keeper for free.

I think there's a possibility that Semedo plays at LWB if Marcal is out and Traore stays at RWB. He played that side for Barca on a few occasions and Nuno has played a right footer in Jonny there before.

Yeah maybe, I just feel like Podence is a low risk, high reward kind of pick for this next few weeks?

Podence AND Foden could backfire, or they could both look like they're in for the whole season at their prices...

If Son goes up in value I will 'cash out' on him, I think it's safe to assume Son won't ever score 4 in a game again so he's peaked.

Yeh if I do a wildcard I'll do more changes. But was thinking of saving my wildcard for later on down the line.

Do you think a -8 hit for 4 changes (I do think that I would recoup the 8 points with the players coming in) is a good idea?

        1. Pukki Blinders

            Auba (fixtures) - KDB
Davies (probs won't play now) and price will go down) - Vinagre (should play now if Marcal is injured)
St Max (injured/not doing so well) - Foden

I've already made them to avoid the team value loss. So I either go with how it is or I turn it into a wildcard and change keepers etc. as well

I personally prefer Adams to Mitro due to his xG, Adam's has been unlucky to not have a goal or two. Also I think Vinagre will be a transfer waiting to happen in a couple weeks when he loses his place... if you have bench cover for Vinagre I think you should probably just roll with the -8

It feels like all the aggressive, Upside Chasing managers are wildcarding. I think Upside Chasing will be the name of the game this season, but my team is nothing that a couple of hits couldn't fix, and I feel no desire to WC.

Who else is in the same boat?

Wildcard should be when your team needs it. No other choice. Some managers need it now, others don't.

WC will be of much greater use down the line I feel, I'm holding it

I'm still 'upside chasing', but I think my first squad had the wrong players. In essence the absence of City and United in GW1 messed me up.

I wish i was. My boat had a hole in one side. Basically starboard only with the port side drowning in my tears and self pity.

Had a season opener picking the assist to the assister. The defender who didn't get the BP's and the Auba over Salah GW1 captaincy putting me 30 points behind from the get go.

I need to WC for peace of mind, I hope you can get on board - although I would bring a life jacket if you're getting on this particular dinghy thingy. I have a tendency to fart and sink at the same time.

Holding my WC as well, must admit I'm tempted though looking at all those fine looking wildcard squads but there is yet so more information to gather I'm not convinced it's the best time to wildcard.

Transfer market is still open so a lot can change, we have not seen much from Chelsea and Man.Utd yet but they are mostly ignored on the current wildcard template.
Am wondering if Everton can keep this up in the next coming fixtures and there is still good value at the back who will not be so good any more in a couple of weeks like Justin and Mitchell for example.
Plus with the Covid situation who knows what happens...

Your attack is very similar to mine except I have Jimenez over Werner and no Mitrovic (playing 4-4-2). I did Auba -> KDB and then need to sort out Soucek and my defence. Lots of people here hate hits for defenders, but I believe sorting out the "glue guys" early in the season for hits should pay off long-term.

I was all for the upside chasing thing but have realised that play style is really not for me. On WC this week to get back to a more familiar feel to my team which is based on a 'squad' of 4-5-2 with long term hold premiums (salah and kdb in my case). Will use the rest of the team to make marginal gains based around form/fixtures of 'smaller' clubs instead.

For those on wc who is the one you’re likely to leave out despite wanting them? Very difficult to fit them all in

    Werner
    Son
    Taa

I've been going round the houses these last couple of days. Doing my noggin in. I don't know yet is the honest answer, you can make strong cases for all of them.

Son, perhaps. I can't believe that any of the teams they will play in the next 5-6 gameweeks won't have learned something about how not to set up defensively against Spurs (I think there's a double negative in that last sentence somewhere, but you get my gist). Son did average almost a goal or assist per game against non-top 6 opposition last season, though, so difficult to leave out.

Where are you at with them?

Madness to go without Werner at all and instead opt for Kane as captain on WC?

Do we expect James to now be the first choice RB? He has been doing really well since the season resumed, and Azpli would have to be on top to have a chance of replacing him.

No, I wouldnt think so. WC will be very handy soon if you can get through. Like, me GK needs attending to, but no major other fires. Utd should come good hopefully. Look at West Ham after game 1. Big improvement game 2.

Any in depth insight on to the combined impact of Fabinho at CB and Thiago in midfield?

    1. Andy_Social
      • 11 Years

No depth from me but Fab looked good enough at CB to keep his place over Gomez while Thiago takes the DM spot. Looks like a powerful combo to me.
