Scoutcast Episode 345 – Is Kevin De Bruyne a must-have for FPL Wildcarders?

After a torrid Gameweek 2, Joe and Az had one request to video manager Andy when booking a guest for this week’s Scoutcast edition: “Please don’t invite anyone on with a great score this week.”

With a chuckle, the Let’s Talk FPL host promptly booked Karam, who managed to rack up 89 points in Gameweek 2 – more than our Scoutcast co-hosts’ combined scores.

Not only did Karam score well, he did it with an unusual squad, featuring triple Liverpool defence to allow him to make room in midfield and attack for his beloved Manchester City.

The likes of Kevin De Bruyne (£11.5m), Raheem Sterling (£11.5m) and Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) take centre stage in this latest episode after Pep Guardiola’s troops impressed against Wolves. Can they do the same against Leicester this weekend?

Meanwhile, there are plenty of Wildcards being deployed among the FPL Community this week. The Scoutcasters imagine they are using this precious chip this week and try to conjure up the perfect team for Gameweek 3 and beyond.

De Bruyne understandably is the first name on their teamsheet. Even the ‘essential’ tag is mentioned a few times regarding the Belgian, who played in a more attacking role for City at Molineux.

Elsewhere, the return to Tottenham of Gareth Bale (£9.5m) is discussed. Is he a nostalgia pick or a genuine contender for FPL managers’ midfields?

This latest episode is also packed with the usual features, with an extended rough with the smooth round-up of the community’s tales of woe and joy. This includes some of the worst scores ever seen on the Scoutcast and the story of an astute five-year-old, who is heading towards the summit of the overall rankings.

‘Next four’ fixture gems are looked at and Karam takes his turn to pick a differential to help managers in the doldrums turn around their fortunes.

Joe and Az could certainly do with some luck.

If you've got kane he's automatically captain. If you don't captain him at home to Newcastle you're wasting 10.5, just sell him. That's my opinion as an owner

I have many times. My point is of you're worried about that then just don't buy him. But if you've paid 10.5 you believe in him and he's a must captain

Thought the same as you, even as an Kane owner, I'm afraid to cap him against Newcastle this gw... Then I saw his goal tally against Newcastle (6 goals in 11 games in all comps.) and the last time was at July behind closed doors at St. James' Park with Kane brace so it's really hard now to ignore him this gw sadly 🙁 The guy is in-form too... Auba and Vardy would be a bigger trolls this year than Harry me think.. Time will tell 🙂

So, who you are going to captain this week, if on my place?
              1) Kane
              2) Salah
              3) KDB
              4) Son

Surely the idea of the game is you pick the player you have who you think will score the most points?
Regardless of value. Player value should not be a consideration for captaincy only the amount of points you think they will get.
Plenty of options this week besides expensive players Wolves and Everton for example.

Barnes is not nailed, he was benched plenty of times last season. Perez, Under, Albrighton and Iheanacho can all play LW when needed.

        1. Pukki Blinders
          • 4 Years
          3 years, 6 months ago

They can but they won't, especially if he keeps up this form. He was only benched when Leicester played 5 at the back

          1. Klaren
            • 6 Years
            3 years, 6 months ago

He does actually get benched when they played 4 at the back as well, Brighton home match is one example.

Yes he won't be benched as long as he keeps us his form but he never does, that's his problem. Not saying he is a bad option at all for the short term but doubt he'll have an amazing season in the long term.

I would go Barnes until GW6 and if it hasn't worked out by then consider a switch to Zaha

    3. stat sifter 888888
      • 3 Years
      3 years, 6 months ago

A without a shadow of doubt. I even added Barnes on my WC GW2 bc was obvious he would score at least one against Burnley. None of Barnes's weaknesses (composure, finishing) have improved enough yet and it is just a matter of time before Rodgers starts experimenting with who will get the best out of Vardy between Under/Gray/Perez/Albrighton etc. Batshuayi coming in made people uneasy but Zaha's performances, bumper contract and lack of interest from other clubs makes it pretty obvious he will stay. As if his position and talent isn't enough, he's also on pens!

      1. Flynny
        • 9 Years

Yeah I do feel that barnes will always be rotation risk.

Zaha has pens with mili out of the team and if playing up front for now....

I like Barnes. In his current form, he is not getting dropped. One of Leicester's best performers currently.

I'm am however being swayed by Foden over Barnes, at least in the immediate short-term. (It helps that I may be 0.1m short of my ideal team, and if Foden rises 0.1m in SV, it makes the switch to Barnes when I want very convenient. Both play each-other next, what could go wrong?!)

I think City will comfortably outscore Liverpool over the next 4. Leicester and Leeds games look like goal fests. I'm doing Mane > Sterling for the double up with KDB. I possibly would be inclined to hold Salah for pens

      2. stat sifter 888888
        • 3 Years

Sterling most likely playing against Justin, who's defending has looked pretty ropey. Soyuncu could still shackle Jesus. KDB will most likely get fouled all game by Mendy but outside chance he could burst forward and get a goal.

In hindsight, Salah was the highest-scoring player.

I don't think it was in hindsight, I had him all season anyway but 7-8 weeks into the season, it was quite clear how good he was going to be. Also that season there weren't as many premium alternatives as this one.

The Spurs squad situation with Son and Mourinho's unpredictability is very worrying now. As soon as other credible mid options start shining he will be out of my team. Bale/Moura/Bergwijn/Lamela/Son for 2 places.

Added to that, Son has been highlighted for his lack of defensive contribution with the team to a slightly lesser extent than Alli in the doc and individual attacking returns seem to be secondary to that.

    A. Zaha, Hames, Brewster
    B. DCL, Foden, Podence

One of B would be a bench/rotational player...

    Martinez-Forster
    Robbo-James-Saiss-Lamptey-Mitchell
    Sterling-Kdb-Son-*******-*******
    Jimmy-Mitro-********

    Thoughts?

A bc at least Zaha and Hamez will start and Hamez is decent cover for Everton. Foden is completely unpredictable, especially in the front 3 and Podence could well be rotated a lot now that Semedo has come in and Traore no longer has to play RWB.

No. This place will just call the last player who got points essential/must-have until the next week. Poor, narrow-minded mentality that gets them nowhere.

I'm going with both fwiw. Betting against KDB is a big risk given his fixtures, but that's up to you.

Yeah, he was on penalties when he blanked in a 5-0 win against Brighton while Sterling bagged a hattrick too.

That's quite often true, but in this particular instance with KDB I think it's perfectly valid to label him essential.

Pens, free kicks, corners, goals and assists from open play. What's not to like?

I had the same plan, but scared to go without KDB now so Sterling will have to wait.

I picked KDB bc of price rise but Sterling will defo get more points vs Leicester and could well do in a lot of games. Almost no difference in rotation risk.

    No.
Although he's likely be the first on my WC teamsheet, I think you could use the money in defence and the front line as a valid tactic instead. E.g.

    Martinez
    TAA Robertson James
    Son Zaha Barnes James
    Werner Jesus Martial

    Steer | Lamptey, Mitchell, 4.5

You could downgrade a defender to upgrade a forward to Kane. Or downgrade a mid to Podence.

KDB not essential in my view. I've yet to be convinced of anyone being essential ever, but I'm open to the idea. Right now, though, there are plenty of good alternative players and tactics in my book. We don't know enough yet, either. Maybe Pool will string together a load of clean sheets or KDB is sharing or losing penalty duty, Chelsea players emerge as the best value and equally as "essential", or Bale starts firing or someone. The transfer window is still open, too.

Sorry, it's essential that I correct myself: I'm not open to the idea. 😀

Except in an unlikely extreme scenario where alternative routes to points were greatly hindered or wiped out or something.

No premium mids not a worry for you? Will make bringing in KDB/Salah/Sterling a real pain

This isn't my team, but it wouldn't worry me. It would just take 2 transfers, which is pretty standard.

There have certainly been essential players over the years...Fernandes last year, Salah a few years ago, Drogba, Fabregas, Suarez in the SAS year, Man Utd defenders in the Vidic era and on and on and on...

      1. Deulofail
        • 8 Years

I disagree. I didn't own Salah at all that season and came around 30k, presumably beating a huge number of managers that had him most of the season. I could go back in time and win the whole thing without Salah with the benefit of hindsight, so in what sense is that 'essential'?

        1. Cok3y5murf
          • 7 Years

Just waiting for someone to say, "If you had owned him, you would've finished way higher."

Didn't play then but while nobody is truly "essential", I take the definition of that word in FPL to mean - he was very high value and returning excellent points, it was always better to have him than to not.

            • 8 Years

But it wasn't always better to have him than to not. It depends on the combination of players in any given number of gameweeks.

              • 3 Years

Yeah, not "always" better. Just that for his value and returns that season the 99% best play was to have him most of the time.

Even after downgrading and looking for value all over your team you really cant make a case for owning the likes of Jesus or Werner instead of upgrading a mid to KDB and going for someone like Wood.

Pepijn Lijnders on Jordan Henderson: "Hendo, hopefully he will get back next week, but tomorrow for sure is too soon for Hendo. Maybe [back for Arsenal], yeah, hopefully."

Liverpool are much worse without him, so I'd hold off on those Salah (C)'s if he doesn't look good for the Arsenal match.

Rustled up this wildcard team quickly; no Man City but I like it. Rate out of 10?

    Martinez
    Keane, TAA, Castagne
    Salah, Son, Zaha, Rodriguez, Klich
    Kane, Jimenez

    4, Dunne, Mitchell, Delap
