How Mindfulness can help with your FPL decisions

We’ve all been there. Logging on to the Fantasy Premier League website just to have another look at our team. It’s beautiful, a masterpiece. The only issue is that we’ve already looked at it today. Why are we looking again? The answer is very simple really, and it’s mainly dopamine.

Just as Facebook used ‘psychological hacking’ in order to (and this is a genuine quote) ‘take as much of our time and attention as possible’. FPL innocently and unknowingly exerts a familiar influence over many of its managers.

I’m not that good at FPL. I always have a good start but things get messy along the way and I end up somewhere in the top 10 of my mini-leagues, occasionally in the money. I also have an addictive personality by nature, and so ordinarily FPL takes up too much of my time.

I’m a Mindfulness trainer by trade and my aim for this season is to use my knowledge of psychology and mental health in order to have more fun and less stress. After speaking to lots of friends, I see that this seems to be a good recipe for many others as well.

I’ve seen more and more talk about the psychological blunders we all make with FPL, and reactive transfers is a great example of the relationship between Mindfulness and this dear old game. Reactivity is perhaps the number one trait we try to address in mindfulness and meditation courses.

There are a few other nuggets of wisdom within the principles of Mindfulness which relate quite nicely to FPL and the unnecessary issues it can cause. I thought it might be helpful for readers if I summarised a few of the key ones here:

CONTROL

How De Bruyne's new Man City role affects his FPL credentials this season

Perhaps the most important source of FPL suffering is the illusion of control. Despite all the statistics anyone can possibly muster, the truth (however hard to hear it might be) is:

You don’t know what’s going to happen in any of those football matches.

It’s worth reading again because this is vital. We really don’t know. We are guessing. Yes, of course, there are trends, and of course, there’s a high probability that Kevin De Bruyne is going to get quite a few points against Fulham at home, but we can never know for sure and it is totally out of our control.

The follow up truth from this is:

How many points you get this week, or across the season, is not in your control.

Strange to consider, isn’t it? I bet some people reading this beg to differ, but think about it. Every single point you have ever gained in FPL has been because a random human being miles away from you did something with a football, and it had nothing to do with you.

Remembering this should be a relief. It takes away a lot of the grasping and clinging to what you think you definitely know, or how well you should/could do this week. Perhaps the most important consequence of remembering this first principle is that we remember to enjoy the game.

FUN

Did you forget? FPL is supposed to be fun! We all started playing this game because it’s enjoyable to try to guess what’s going to happen in the future, and to be rewarded when our guesses are correct. Enjoying the thrill of the unknown.

This year, with more advice, news and FPL services available than ever before, there is a real risk of many of us losing sight of the enjoyment of the game more than ever before as well. If you really think about it, do you want to give so much energy and time to something which you are not enjoying? None of us do. So it’s in our interests to understand those factors which suck the fun out of the game and attempt to address them in our own relationship with FPL.

Mindfulness is great for this. Any time you notice that you’re miserable or stressed out because of FPL, it’s a good chance to stop and take some time to investigate what’s really going on. Slow down and pay attention to what’s happening in your inner world; bring it into the light. This is a form of meditation, and it doesn’t need to be done sitting on a cushion with your eyes closed. Rather than letting negative emotions drive your behaviour, be ruthless in remembering the above two points: it’s not in your control, and it’s supposed to be fun. Let go!

CONSCIOUS CLICKING

FPL relaunches with/without unlimited transfers for all managers

I started this article by mentioning the relentless checking of the website which many of us have fallen prey to. This behaviour takes place because we get a dopamine hit released in our brain every time we look at our team and remember that we might be rewarded in the future for those players doing well this weekend. Just like Instagram, Twitter etc, this is creating a feedback loop which is incredibly addictive.

The good news is that this means the remedies are the same and there are many. We should consider why we are checking the website and our team and begin to transition to consciously checking when we have a reason to do so. When we pay attention to our behaviours, we begin to transform them.

This is another strategy which can alleviate stress and bring some fun back into the game. Less time wasted is only going to be a good thing. Gradually bringing consciousness into the checking of the website will filter into your thinking processes as well, and before long you will be wasting less energy thinking badly about your transfers during the week and confusing the issue.

Who would want to be addicted to looking at a teamsheet of players from random football teams who you think are going to do well on the weekend? None of us do, and there’s no reason why we need to.

CLEAR THINKING

I was interested to see how well Magnus Carlsen did in FPL last year, and having just started learning to play chess, I think I can see some of the reasons why. Besides having a superhuman memory (which must really help when it comes to remembering stats and transfer options), chess requires extraordinarily clear thinking and decision making.

Magnus is incredibly good at blitz chess, which is when you have only a small amount of time to make your move, and this means he is very good at making decisions without wasting energy. This must be so useful for FPL. When he looks at his team and realises a strategy isn’t likely to pay off, I presume that he immediately discards it at light speed as he would do in a chess match, instead of ruminating over it as most of us would. This clarity of thought, unfortunately, isn’t something we all possess! However, we can still learn from this and try to bring some of it into our own play.

An example of this in relation to Mindfulness is to notice when you are thinking badly about FPL. If it’s just in the back burner of your mind, ticking away throughout the week, this isn’t necessarily helping you.

It would be better to consciously think about it for a short amount of time and make clear decisions which you understand. Make a routine for doing transfers which gives you enough time to gather the info you need and then make your decision, but doesn’t allow you to waste lots of your week. As you practice thinking more clearly and not wasting mental energy, you get better at it. That can only be a good thing.

MEDITATION

Perhaps the most important aspect of practising meditation is that it allows us to access a deeper state of mind. When we are in a deeper state of mind, everything is better. It brings clarity to our thinking and makes it more difficult for negative emotions to hang around and ruin our day.

Really slowing down and allowing the mind to rest fills it with energy, which is more powerful than the kind of energy we use on a day-to-day basis. This energy is likely to help us make much better decisions and enjoy our FPL season. So take a deep breath (or 100) before burning those four points!

With Ndidi out for 2-3 months, De Bruyne captain just becomes even more enticing. I was hesitating between KDB and Werner but now the armband is firmly on KDB.

      good point

Leicester struggled mightily last season when Ndidi was out. I remember it distinctly as an early Vardy owner at the time who then held on a bit too long.

according to joshua bull and his mathematical modeling, for captains, we should consider the fixture over the form, and for transfers, we should consider the form (4 games) over the fixtures.

Fair point, but how are you determining the fixture? Is it based purely on name? Is it based on some potentially outdated coefficients in a ticket? Because I wouldn't argue Brighton is a particularly good fixture atm.

    Thoughts:
Spurs assets : Son's 4 goals and Kane's 4 assists could be like Halley's comet. They'll come around next time they play a back line that high as at Southampton, which I recon is not going to happen soon. Maybe against Leeds, or when Mou decides to park the bus and wait on counter - and even then these 4 goals won't happen. Maybe one. So I guess sudden interest in Son and Kane is a classic FPL knee-jerk move. Watch them against a side which will park the bus - like Newcastle might do on Sunday and you'll see how they struggle to create. That might change with Bale and Regulion, but until they are fit and playing, I think there are better assets than Kane and Son.
Manchester United assets: Without a proper defensive coverage in midfield ( MATIC ) Bruno must get deeper in order to get the ball from defence to the attack. That's because Lindelof and Maguire are so limited in that regard, that they are painfull to watch sometimes. Also, you can't really rely on Pogba doing that work. It will be interesting to see though how they will look with Van den Beek and Greenwood in first 11. James and Fosu Mensah are ABYSMAL combo on the right side, more like options for Fulham or WBA and certanly not for MUTD.
With that said, I guess they are wait and see, mainly because of their price. Bruno at 10.5 playing "carillero" is not a good option, because you have the likes of KDB and Sterling for only 1.0 more which are proven FPL assets.

    Cheers.

If Saints continue with a high line their defense is a 'no go' as far as I'm concerned. McCarthys positioning all wrong. Should be used as a sweeper. Not stuck on the goal line.

There's a lot here - fair play. Counter-point on the Son question is traditional Jose tactics - sit deep and hit on the break. They'll get chances to break, even against Newcastle (who are more open). Son is potentially also under-priced, as he's a world class finisher. As for Man Utd, interesting - only the two Sirs ever got a serious trophy-winning tune out of them. But they could whip Brighton, who play into their hands.

I get your point on Son. I just don't trust Spurs as a whole. Maybe that will change with Bale and Regulion. Also, if Son is underpriced, that Bale could possibly be steal of the year at 9.5.

That's the problem -- I'm not sure who would have the determination to stick with no hits if it wasn't working. Like Mark last year was stubborn enough to never own KDB, but no hits would take even more determination than that, I think.

      3. noquarternt

Probably plenty, the most vocal people are always the ones with really high ranks.

There are so many things to consider:

If you get off to a good start you're less likely to take hits.

If you take hits for players that are already highly owned by managers above you, you will solidify their leads.

The only thing I think is undoubted common knowledge is that excessive hits will hurt you in the long run. If you cut yourself down to just a few for injuries or tactically spreading of funds etc rather than -8s and -12s every week your game will improve dramatically. To get up to elite ranks, it is much harder to understand the best route.

Made no hits last season, in fact over the years I would easily have more zero hit seasons than season with hits. Results are very mixed.

I have been hit adverse the past two seasons and it has led to my best finish (1.6k) and a solid finish (69k). Previously had only cracked top 100k once and have been playing for about 8 seasons (albeit seriously for only 4). Unless I really need to structurally deal with a problem in my team, it usually hurts me more than it helps. I have seen it pay off big time for some though!

Thanks for the reply below. I would argue that Guaita is not worth the extra .5 over Martinez, Villa were quite solid at the back after Restart and will only improve with the new keeper and Cash. You have Mitch to cover any decent Palace fixtures too. I think -especially if he drops in price- Soucek is great value and allows more flexibility, and you're going to want two decent long term subs if you're going with Foden and Podence.

Another way is to swap TAA for Robbo who I think will provide better value, TAA likely to drop soon so not too tricky to get him back if he does start outperforming the Scot.

But of course I could be completely wrong 🙂

Marcal Wolves £5m. Yellow flagged 75% knock presently, but went straight into the team so I'm assuming he's first choice with Jonny out long term.
Looks a better £5m option than Coady due to potential attacking returns. I can't afford Saiss & definitely want a Wolves defender.

Up 2-0 at half in a cup match, I think it was more about changing tactics and giving him some rest. Doesn't look to be anything injury related from what I can see.

Just for rest I guess. Maybe they were knocking him about too much. Richi was on for a hattie so stayed on longer.

Here’s the merry men ready to take the world on in GW3. G2G?

    -4 1.5itb
    McCarthy
    TAA, Davies, Taylor
Salah, KDB (C), Rodriguez, Podence, Soucek
    Werner, Martial
    (Steer) (Mitchell, KWP, Brewster)

Hoping for better things than last weeks debacle and slightly fearing all these WC teams!

After letting in 5 against Tottenham, I don't know how people are still trying to roll McCarthy out there.

I get that the fixtures look nice on paper but that is not a defense I would want to trust. Just my opinion though 🙂

If you do roll with McCarthy, I would recommend moving KWP to another 4.5 like Lamptey, I DEFINITELY would not want to have to rely on two Southampton defenders.

Hi I'm a newbie. I've added up the total of my proposed wildcard team and it adds up to 99.9 million. The FPL website is saying I'm at 100.1 million. Makes no sense to me. Could someone lend some wisdom! Have added it up with a calculator 4 times!

Buying value and selling value aren't the same.

You only get half of the selling value.

Say you bought Salah for 12.0

      He rises to 12.1

Someone has to buy him for 12.1 but you can only sell him for 12.0.

        You buy DCL for 7.0

        He rises to 7.2

Someone has to buy him for 7.2, you can sell him for 7.1

Ok, got you! Wow, so it's not too smart to get rid of Mane when he dropped to 11.9 bc he most likely would've come back up to 12 or more... and therefore now the value of my whole team (bc I sold him) has dropped, correct?

        1. Bushwhacker
          • 4 Years

Correct. I've lost money this way on WC's WAY too many times in the past . . . especially as you tinker with your team - once you commit you can lose money....it's very annoying.

I think he came deep only due to the circumstances of being 2 goals down, he came deep as he feels like he has the ability and wanted the responsibility to take control and unlock the defence.

The whole team wasn't firing either i can see them bouncing back vs brighton and Bruno not playing so deep against them

    The no Son WC:

    Martinez
    Robbo James Saiss
    Salah KDB Foden Podence
    Werner Jim DCL

    4.0 Soucek Lamptey Mitchell

James is the only pick in there I'm not keen on long-term, thinking about going with another 4.5 and rotating with Lamptey and Mitchell (plus the extra 0.6 ITB is useful for e.g. Jimi to Martial later on).

Think the bench is good enough to cover Podence + Foden, the rest are all nailed.

    Any good?

Toying with two Wildcard drafts. Which do you prefer:

    A)
    Martinez
    Robertson Saiss Taylor
    KDB Sterling Havertz Podence
    Werner DCL Jimenez

    Steer; Lamptey, Mitchell, Burke

    B)

    TAA Digne Saiss
    KDB Sterling Son Podence
    Mitro DCL Jimenez

    Steer Burke Mitchell Lamptey
+ 0.8 in the bank if I want to jump back on Salah

I really like what Lateriser has said about getting to your ideal team early, and about "glue guys". It's helped me understand that it's OK to fix up some issues in my cheap players with hits now, since I'm not using WC now. The RMT tool supports these moves based on their long-term benefit over a large number of GWs, even though they're not likely to have immediate large payoffs.

Once we get past the first month of the season, then it will be a policy of taking hits only for moves with massive potential upside.

    1. Bad Kompany
      • 6 Years

This is making wonder if it’s worth a hit to replace McCarthy. His next two are decent so will probably hold him for those but after that I might remove him. Will need to somehow find .5 because I don’t like any of the 4.5 gk

      1. FPL Theorist
        • 4 Years
        3 years, 6 months ago

Could be. I had a bad experience with removing Pope for a hit last season, but clearly McCarthy is no Pope.

I'm on Meslier myself and willing to give him a chance for the short term, given a lack of good cheap GK options. For defenders, there are a lot of good options, so there's no need to stick with bad options.
