Pro Pundits - Darren

Why I’m lining up for FPL Gameweek 3 without any Chelsea players

A Fantasy Premier League veteran of 11 years, Darren Wiles has an incredible track record with three top 1k finishes in the last four seasons.

With so many favourable match-ups in Gameweek 3, I am feeling confident about the next round of Fantasy Premier League.

It has been a positive start thus far, anyway, with 80 and 90-point hauls in the first two Gameweeks taking me to a total of 170 and an overall rank of 29k.

The goals have been flying in so far and I have been lucky enough to capitalise on the early glut of double-digit returns. But all of that is in the past, and it’s what happens this weekend that matters now.

Here is what my team looks like for Gameweek 3 and the reasons behind some key decisions.

Which two should I keep longterm?

    A) Ryan
    B) Martinez
    C) Mcarthy

The two that rotate fixtures the best if you are set on having two.

      Just A, B or C.

      Rotating doesn't work does it?

Of course rotating works...if you always played the keeper with the higher likelihood of getting a clean sheet you’d get more, on average, over time

You also miss out on the benched keeper, getting the unexpected CS in a tough fixture, with the bonus and save points, and the big green arrow that comes with it.

The 0.5 you can save is better used elsewhere unless there is a ridiculous home/away bias and rotation fixtures.

This season, home advantage is negligible to some extent and no teams with 4.5m keepers actually rotate that well do that?

No you didn't, you went Fulham and Newcastle looking at your team.

Anyway, I still think you'd be better just picking Ryan or Martinez and sticking with them and using the 0.5 elsewhere.

They rotate 'fine' with a couple of poor weeks, but I think you'll end up worse off for doing it unless you get so lucky.

Just in the next 10 there are a few where Villa play a top 6 and Brighton have an “easy” fixture

Yeah that is fair enough....but a keeper can pull off a lot of saves against a good team in a tough ficture and come away with a haul!

Over the season, you have to hope you picked the right one.

It is so hard not to bench the wrong one, even if the fixtures look easy.

There is clearly luck involved, but I think over a season it should get you at least 6 more clean sheets...if there were a great cheap pairing on a team with a good defense maybe 2 from the same team would be worth it...I’m not convinced Villa is that team...what if they are terrible? Then you are stuck with 2 of them

See how you feel after your breeches keeper gets an unexpected double figure haul haha.

I can't 3rd in 14/15 and didn't rotate the keepers, so I'm sticking with that

    Martinez Steer
    VVD Digne Saiss Lamptey Dunne

I really like it but most people will criticise for the money on the bench.
There is a really good rotation benching the player with the hardest fixture from Zaha, Barnes, DCL and Mitrovic and you get to cover Foden no shows.

Depends how he fits in with your squad rotation, it's unlikely you will need your 3rd sub I think and not many decent options at £4.5m.
You could downgrade Zaha to Podence, upgrade VVD to TAA and get Mitchell for Dunne but I think I'd probably keep it as it is.

It's a really interesting stat isn't it..... in some ways that means he's a great striker/finisher?

However you could look at it and expect him to do worse because of it!

            • 9 Years

Yeah, it reflects very well on Ings' performance last year and shows just how good he was.

I guess it depends whether you think he can continue that form into this year, tidy finish against Spurs last weekend though I must say.

I don't see why he wouldn't, but again, for me it comes down to who is more exciting. I feel Werner could be top scorer, and I feel I know Ings won't be, but he'll get 15+

So do I gamble, or not.....

Chelsea are superior to Southampton, and as the money isn't an issue I'll probably end up with Werner by the deadline, and then regret it as Ings scores a brace and Werner hugs the left touchline all game

I'm not sure understand xG, as mentioned below, does over performing mean you're good or lucky?

          1. F4L
            • 9 Years
            3 years, 6 months ago

xG had him down for 15/16 goals last year (he scored 22), so he overperformed last year.

There's no doubt he might continue to be so clinical, but normally players revert back to the mean.

So if I had the same great fitness and positional awareness of Danny Ings and got in the same positions as him to receive the ball I would be expected to score the same number of goals as him even though I can't shoot to save my life?

    Auba to ? for a -4

    A) Sterling - upside with low ownership, explosiveness, probably playing up top?
    B) KDB - concussion doubt, on set-pieces, runs the show at Man City

Explosiveness is another term for high variance, why is this preferable to a more consistent point scorer like KDB?
I'm going for KDB but it's a question that only you can answer as there is no way of knowing which will do better.

It's funny. I have been doing this for several years. Finished in the top 10k six times, but I seem to be really struggling with what to do this season. There are so many different options that are attractive, and I don't mean differences in one or two players. I mean combinations of 5-6 different players. Also, maybe it is my imagination, but it seem like FPL really wants to make it more difficult to go with 2 big hitters like Salah and KDB versus picking one and spreading out the funds. I am on a wildcard and have no idea what my team will be before the end of the deadline.

im with you - this season has been really hard. Im waiting for price changes before finalizing WC

I also agree - the pricing really makes me tempted to go salah less. The rest of the team looks so good. but Salah can always score a hat trick on a whim

It's the best season I've ever played, there's so many options and there's going to be so much points chasing and hits.
There really isn't much of a template and players have been priced incredibly well.

    McCarthy (bur)
TAA (ARS) - Saiss (whu) - Mitchell (EVE)
KDB C (LEI) - Salah (ARS) - Bruno (bha) - ASM (tot)

I went Jimenez, Werner and Ings but I'll be keeping a close eye on DCL to see if he looks like continuing his run or doing a Pukki.

    Thoughts guys? WC

    Martinez,
    James, Saiss, Trent,
    Salah, KDB, Son, James, Burke,
    Jiminez, Calvert-Lewin,

Forster, Mitchell, Justin, Davis, 0.9 ITB

I could swap Son and Burke to Foden and Greenwood but it gives me a benching headache for the following two gameweeks.
