Pro Pundits - Darren

Why I’m lining up for FPL Gameweek 3 without any Chelsea players

A Fantasy Premier League veteran of 11 years, Darren Wiles has an incredible track record with three top 1k finishes in the last four seasons.

With so many favourable match-ups in Gameweek 3, I am feeling confident about the next round of Fantasy Premier League.

It has been a positive start thus far, anyway, with 80 and 90-point hauls in the first two Gameweeks taking me to a total of 170 and an overall rank of 29k.

The goals have been flying in so far and I have been lucky enough to capitalise on the early glut of double-digit returns. But all of that is in the past, and it’s what happens this weekend that matters now.

Here is what my team looks like for Gameweek 3 and the reasons behind some key decisions.

Not really interested in Dunne or anyone from Burnley. Rather a steady 4.5 than Dunne who will get replaced as soon as one of Mee or Tar are back from injury.

    On WC
    Im down to 2 spots
    4.5 and Button
    A - Martinez - Flair
    B - Ryan - Steady

    4.5 Bench Striker
    1 - Davis - boring
2 - Brewster (not wanting 1 of my 3 Pool spots taken by fodder)
3 - Delap - who am I kidding, my man Liam

I've focussed my WC on players who I think offer good value over the season and also have good fixtures.
The biggest struggle has been deciding if Liverpool defenders and a cheaper attack offer better points over the next 8 weeks than the defenders listed below (who I think offer the best value in terms of points per million) and enable more expensive attacking options.
I only want one super premium player as their points per million are not great when they aren't captained and Son covers KDB's tricky fixtures when I may not want to captain him (weeks 7 and 8).
I have great options in defence who rotate well, could all increase in price and I am happy for them to come off my bench when Foden and Mahrez don't play.
This team does not mean I will never own Salah or TAA, it just means I'm not going to have them until week 12, although week 7 vs WHM is very tempting and there is plenty of transfers for a reshuffle.

    Martinez, Forster
    Castagne, Saiss, James, Keane, Lamptey
    KDB, Son, Mahrez, Foden, Anguissa
    Werner, Jimenez, Ings

Are you concerned about Son reverting back to a deep/wide position? I agree about the value players. I think Everton defense is better than ppl think. WBA got some goals against the run of play - poor communication on the first goal (quick fix), and ppl won't be hitting 30 yard freekicks every week. I'm just concerned about TAA since he burned me last year. But if I betted against anyone, it'd be him. Mahrez/Son can easily become Pulisic. Yea, good team.

        Thanks,
Son has great fixtures and even when he was out further wide against Everton he was looking good, Coleman did really well cutting him off. I'm not expecting crazy scores from Son but if he can average 6.5ppg over the next few I'm happy.
Everton really strengthened their midfield and as a result I think their defence is slightly under priced.
TAA is the only player I owned every game last season, you won't find many bigger fans than me but there are defenders who offer better value this year. I will 100% own TAA at some point, just need to hope he doesn't get himself 24 points in a week again whilst I don't have him.

Nice team. Agree with you on the only having one super premium approach. I think identifying value and spreading funds is the way to go. But my concern with Citeh players like Mahrez is that even if they don't start, it's pretty likely that they come on for a cameo. Less worried about Foden because he's so cheap (relatively) for what you get.
So you may not need the funds spread quite so much because the bench players won't be called on. Might be worth downgrading one defender to a 4.0 (e.g. Mitchell) and upgrading one to a Liverpool defender? James looks good going forward but there are still big question marks over Chelsea's clean sheet potential i think. Likewise with Castagne - looks awesome for attacking returns but Leicester without Ndidi may be vulnerable. Should help avoiding some bench headaches as well.

I went without Salah as well, my team looks so much better. I do expect to have him eventually but for now I need to figure out what better value option to drop for him is.

Your team is different, but definitely could do well.

I have similar attack but no Ings.
Ings to DCL could give you 1 Pool's def. Ings to Bamford could give you 2 Pool's def.

    Choose one for WC:

    A) Foden
    B) Wood

Foden rotation risk, Wood flexibility. Wood better prospect long term?

Bottomed. Thoughts on this draft? Kai is hopefully just a placeholder for Pulisic, or Kai becomes Greenwood. Cheers

    Martinez
    TAA / Semedo / James
    KDB / Salah / Havertz / Foden / Podence
    Jimenez / Richarlison

    (Steer - Lamptey / Mitchell / Brewster)

Or Richi to DCL then either:
    A) Podence > Traore
    B) James > Digne
    C) Jimmy > Werner (C) for a 1 week punt

I'm struggling myself with whether or not Rich is worth the money over DCL. So if I was in your shoes, I'd likely do B.

      1. Boo Ya Ka Sha
        • 8 Years
        3 years, 6 months ago

I think DCL will have a good season. But at the same time he's predictable in open play since he's stuck up top. So he'll have to rely on rebounds or jumping over defenders. While, Richi is more dynamic. I really like his movement, it's unpredictable and it splits teams apart. He's been super unlucky to not have scored a few goals. He'd be highly owned right now with just a bit more luck. Under the radar, and may have penalty duties.

On WC, had to re-shuffle once Jesus got injured. GTG or keep tinkering?

    Martinez
    Vvd - Digne - Saiss - Dunne
    Salah - KdB (v) - Son - Zaha
    Richarlison - Jimi (c)

    Ryan, Burke, Mitchell, Brewster

A little weak on the subs, you could end up with 3 non starters quite easily but strong starting 11.
Interesting choice on captaincy but you've obviously considered that and he does have a good fixture.

    Salah - KDB - Son - XXX - XXX

    TEAM 2)

Or just go all out Premiums in midfield

    Martinez
    Robbo - Saiss - James - Keane
KDB - Sterling Salah - Podence
    Jiminez - DCL

aye true, that'd certainly do it, although dangerous having two 4.0 defenders i guess, would be a shame to lose that value on rodriguez also, may risk it 🙂

    4. nerd_is_the_werd

Yeah, if you go for bench fodder, defenders are usually the best assets at 4.0m.
At that price, all they'd need to do is make a 60+ min appearance and no red card.

    Hi guys,

Thoughts on my WC team. Unsure if I should try get TAA in or strengthen up the defence but downgrade a mid?

    Martinez
    Digne / Saiss / Davies
Salah / Son / De Bruyne / Rodriquez / Podence
    Werner/ DCL

Nyland / Mitchell / Lamptey / Brewster. 0.1 mil ITB

lamptey and mitchell could do with stronger rotation.

      Interesting lineup.
It has potential to score solidly whilst getting some hauls.
Only thing is that no Salah, Son, Werner (popular captain picks this week) might be a bit risky.

      Probably Kane for captain.

    Version 14 of wc

    Martinez Steer
    Robbo Saiss Lamptey Taylor Ferguson/Mitchell
    Salah Kdb Son Foden Soucek
    Jimmy DCL Wood

Thumbs up or down? Feedback welcome
    Son to Chelsea mid soon
Wood or Maupay then move to Antonio later
Is there flexibility for united player later?

Think it's fine. I do think Son will blank/score 1 vs Newcastle though.

My issue is choosing Foden or Wood

I just don’t think one city player is enough to capitalise. I was set on Jesus but changed to Foden (he’s the teachers pet)
Wood on pens I like and lots of strikers at that price bracket

KDB, that leicester city game could be a mauling from the blues, even more so without Jesus i'd say.

I wonder if Sterling might be a better pick (instead of Sterling) he's gonna be up top no?

Right, well the decision hinges on these two from above really.

    A) Rodriguez

    B) Foden

Who's your option? Think i'm gonna go woth Foden as all points to him starting and in a far better attacking team?

Have both but Foden + 1M is my preference.

      Don’t like 442
      Need a stronger 7th attacker
