Everton unchanged as Eze makes first Premier League start for Palace

Carlo Ancelotti has named an unchanged side for Everton as they travel to Crystal Palace in Gameweek 3.

The Toffees’ key players have been highly sought-after in the transfer market over the last seven days; hardly a surprise given that Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.3m) already has four goals in two matches.

The mid-priced forward arrives at Selhurst Park currently sat in 27.5% of Fantasy Premier League squads, the most of any Everton asset.

James Rodríguez (£7.6m) is not far behind his colleague. Following his 12-point haul against West Bromwich Albion, the Colombian is now owned by 25.1% of Fantasy managers.

Richarlison (£8.0m) is currently the slight differential in attack, currently sat in 11.4% of Fantasy squads for Gameweek 3.

There is also plenty of interest in an Everton clean sheet today, as 14.1% have hold of Lucas Digne (£6.1m). The left-back was unfortunate to blank in Gameweek 2, hitting the crossbar and targetted by more final-third passes than any colleague against the Baggies.

While the majority of the Fantasy community will be siding with the visitors today, Crystal Palace are hardly short of support.

After finding the net three times in the opening two matches of the season, Wilfried Zaha (£7.1m) has already accrued 17% ownership. With Luka Milivojevic (£5.9m) still on the Palace bench, the out-of-position FPL midfielder, deployed as a centre-forward once again, may get another chance at spot-kick duties for the Eagles.

Meanwhile, 24.4% of Fantasy managers remain invested in Tyrick Mitchell (£4.1m), who is yet to register a blank this season. The young left-back kept a clean sheet in his last Premier League outing at Selhurst Park, and provided a Fantasy assist when Palace won 3-1 at Old Trafford last weekend.

There will be plenty of interest from Palace fans and neutrals alike as Eberechi Eze (£6.0m) makes his first league start for his new club. The former QPR man has been restricted to substitute appearances in the Premier League thus far, but replaces Jeffrey Schlupp (£5.5m) on the left-hand side of midfield in Gameweek 3.

Crystal Palace XI (4-4-2): Guaita; Mitchell, Sakho, Kouyaté, J Ward; Eze, McArthur, McCarthy, Townsend; Zaha, Ayew.

Everton XI (4-3-3): Pickford; Digne, Keane, Mina, Coleman; Allan, Gomes, Doucouré; Richarlison, Calvert-Lewin, Rodríguez.

Corner man utd in ET 6min30sec

    Just doesnt make sense.

    Feel bad for Brighton.

With VAR present I can understand that when a foul is made before the final whistle they can intervene.
Its harsh, but by the rules a correct decision.

But playing so late on is just a blatant foul by the referee imo

Brighton celebrated their goal for a while and then the handball was before the final whistle which the referee didn’t see so checked on VAR. Correct decision, as annoying as it is for me too.

I concur with the correct decision even after final whistle. But for me the corner shouldnt have been taken. For me it was past 30 seconds from kick off.

Fair enough, the 5 minutes injury time is a minimum though so we don’t know the exact time that he was going to add and then extra is added for the celebrations. Harsh on Brighton for sure.

The ref missed the handball, I’d have been furious if they hadn’t checked that and given a penalty if it was against my team.

Full-time whistle was blown. Think it might be the first time in the history of professional football that such an outrageous standard has been set. Definitely the first time in the Prem. They didn't even do it last year when Sheff didn't get a goal last year at Villa bc of Hawkeye and that was the only reason Villa stayed in the Prem and Watford went down.

It’s not actually VAR as a concept I have an issue with. It’s actually done a good job in exposing certain laws of the game that aren’t up to scratch, such as handball and offside.

There’s far too many penalties in football, those lines on the pitch were drawn over 100 years ago and funnily enough, football has changed a lot since then. Fouls 15-18 yards away from goal during certain phases of play shouldn’t be punished with a free kick at goal from 12 yards out in the what is a low scoring sports match.

Compared to other top sports, football is fast becoming a bit of a joke sport at the highest level, and it’s VAR exposing it. Imo of course.

There was always a risk in selling United players on wildcard but those who did can at least take comfort in the fact that they still looked poor.

You can't own everyone and it may well be the players you have instead are currently better options.

Has a referee ever gone to check the pitch side monitor at VAR's behest, and NOT changed his mind?

Yep. I remember it happening in the WC for sure and there have been plenty other times in other leagues. Changing is more likely though.

      1. DeathAngel
        • 14 Years
        3 years, 6 months ago

It's ridiculously rare though right? Like probably less than 1% of the time they don't change their mind, meaning that the slow walk over to the monitor is just a glorified waste of time right?

          • Fantasy Football Scout Member
          • 9 Years
          3 years, 6 months ago

          Yep, it's definitely the minority.

The problem is if you don't use the pitchside monitor then you get more of what you had in the PL last season, which was calls were bad enough to go against common sense and majority opinion but not "clear and obvious" enough for Var to more directly overturn.

          1. DeathAngel
            • 14 Years
            3 years, 6 months ago

Surely pretty much the same decisions are changed via VAR both this season and last season? Only now the accountability for VAR is gone, because the on-pitch referee is the sole person in charge of non-offside/encroachment type decisions (that are black and white and VAR changes it without asking the on-pitch referee).

I see this monitor check as just a glorified time waste that makes it so that the on-pitch referee has supposed ultimate decision making power, but since he doesn't want VAR to look bad he pretty much always agrees with VAR's assessment, rather than giving actual value with his monitor check.

The only way around this is for VAR to do some fake monitor checks so that the referee approaches each decision with an open mind as he will not know if VAR is doing a fake or real monitor check.

From IFAB Laws of the Game:

However, if at the end of the half, the referee leaves the field of play to go to the referee review area (RRA) or to instruct the players to return to the field of play, this does not prevent a decision being changed for an incident which occurred before the end of the half.
